Welcome to San Antonio, Kurt Thomas

by Marcel Mutoni

Eat your heart out, Steve Kerr.

The man who was famously brought into Phoenix two years ago for the sole purpose of guarding Tim Duncan in the Playoffs is now a member of the Spurs. Kurt Thomas has been saved from basketball hell (also known as Seattle):

The San Antonio Spurs have reached agreement with the SuperSonics that will bring them center Kurt Thomas in exchange for guard Brent Barry, center Francisco Elson and a 2009 first-round draft pick, league sources said Wednesday.

Just in case anyone had forgotten, the Spurs’ front office reminds us all that they are the savviest in the entire League.

While everyone else in the West has been frantically acquiring shiny new toys, San Antonio laid back in the cut until the last moment and has just added the perfect piece to their already rock-solid squad. The rich get richer, indeed.

tealish says:
Good for Kurt. I’ve never really followed him, cause well.. he’s just Kurt Thomas - but I respect the guy.

whooo! says:
guess they picked up 2 vets without rings for this ride around. funny how thomas was supposed to be the duncan stopper on a way to a ring w/ phx (even though dude’s been getting torched since ny), and stoudemire said the spurs would never win with aver johnson as the pg. if you can’t beat em…

TADOne says:
A great pick up for SA, but I’m not sure about that 1st round pick they included. But I suppose it was needed to pry Thomas from Seattle. The pick probably won’t be above #26 anyway.

Russ Bengtson says:
Teams from Texas don’t need no stinkin’ first-round picks.

Michael NZ says:
Great move for SA… but how about the domino effect the Gasol move is having?! Jeez.

Major move

The Notorious King says:
the spurs once again have the best front office in the league

Sesa says:
How Brent Barry is going to felt? He wanted to retire as a spur and Pop consoled him last season because he thought that he’ll be traded.
Anyways, The Spurs still needs Parker on the floor in order to solidify their run at the title.

Captain America says:
Happy for Thomas and SA. Especially Thomas as a vet.

Vigoss says:
barry canr really complain, since he has his ring. I’m sure everyone there is grateful for his peripheral and sometimes crucial contributions

Feb.20 at 10:18 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
As an old guy myself, I love that every major player in the West has been trading for or signing 35-year-olds. The Blazers should bring back Steve Smith or Scottie Pippen.

Feb.20 at 10:19 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And Brent played for the Sonics before back in the GP days. Could be a lot worse for him.

peteb80 says:
Now this is a move that needs no discussion.

Skillet Forilla says:
wow.. just wow.. Kurt Thomas is going to kill some (more) people come playoff time. this is just such a nice pick-up for the Spurs, it’s not funny.

Krayzie Bone says:
I think its also a recognition of the fact that the big fundemental is the 5 there, not the 4. I know they label oberto as the 5, but I think that Thomas spells more of his minutes than Timmy’s

Slick Nick Da Ruler says:
Spurs took an weapon away from everybody else. Smart move

Feb.20 at 11:16 pm

nick says:
Good move. They needed another big, and “Cisco” wasn’t getting it done. With mighty mouse in and Mr Longoria coming back, barry is mostly expendable. Smooth.

Feb.21 at 12:28 am

Rob Paxon says:
I feel bad for Barry… he seems like he just plain belongs on the Spurs. Thomas is a very good pick-up for the Spurs frontcourt; he upgrades Elson’s minutes and can replace some of Horry’s. The pick doesn’t mean much to the Spurs. The Sonics now have 50 picks in the next few years they can package to move up in the draft and/or pursue young players with. Good for both teams, great for Kurt Thomas, terrible for Brent Barry.

Feb.21 at 12:56 am

J Buckets says:
Kurt Thomas alongside Tim Duncan is a perfect fit. Kurt is a pick & pop guy that will work well with the Spurs offense

Feb.21 at 1:11 am

Co Co says:
Russ we need Steve Smith for Hawks broadcasts, and if anyone is going to sign him it needs to be Atlanta.

Feb.21 at 1:25 am

whooo! says:
the thing with the spurs moves too is foresight and planning. i read up and they save having to pay luxury tax, and thomas is done after the year. after which they bring in a lottery-level talent to man the 4 from the draft pick they used this past season. it’s never the big highlight moves with them, it’s the smart subtle things.

RV says:
there’s a rumor about a hornets-rockets trade, bonzi/james for jackson+someone else, possibly setting up another trade…also, apparently the rockets tried to get Artest, but the deal breaker was they wouldn’t include Brooks in the deal..

Feb.21 at 1:42 am

RV says:
also, another rumor has Head+expiring contract for mike Miller…i guess we’ll see tomorrow if there’s anything to this

Feb.21 at 1:44 am

RV says:
the new orleans deal seems close to a sure thing

Feb.21 at 1:45 am

Poor Brent Barry….

Feb.21 at 2:07 am

Garrett says:
At least Seattle will be treated to some awesome dunks from the free throw line! Oh wait….

Feb.21 at 3:00 am

RV says:
the new orleans deal is now official

Feb.21 at 4:02 am

Jim Mora says:
barry will be back in 30 days

Feb.21 at 5:31 am

Tariq says:
ٍSan Antonio should thank God that Devean George wasn’t part of this deal. Seriously though, this is the Chris-Chambers-to-the-Chargers trade of the season.

Feb.21 at 5:39 am

QB says:
steve kerr just got kicked in the head, duncan & thomas V stodomire & shaq its all over 4 phx

Feb.21 at 6:11 am

Gerard Himself says:
I like it. Kurt Thomas was playing against Duncan in the Finals of ‘99, but now he’s with Duncan battling whoever in the Finals. Yes, I said it. The Spurs (if they finally will all stay healthy, I’m looking at you Tony) will get back to the Finals.

Feb.21 at 7:45 am

Sesa says:
Gerard: Assuming Parker-Ginobili-Duncan healthy.

Feb.21 at 8:43 am

jj says:
I still think the smartest move from a team in the west so far this year was the Jazz adding Korver. They’re something like 19-3 since they brought him in…

Feb.21 at 9:39 am

Tariq says:
jj: The Korver move was really nice, as is this Kurt Thomas acquisition. I also like the Hornets’ new pickups. But the best move by far is the Gasol heist. Worst? Shaq, with Kidd a close second.

The West is so nice right now. Denver needs to go ahead and make that move for Artest now.

Jukai says:
This just proves that people just LOVE the San Antonio Spurs WAY too much… oh wow… a guy averaging what, 9 points and 4 rebounds? WATCH OUT, LEAGUE!!!!!!!!

Feb.21 at 2:11 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Sesa: yes, and Matt Bonner of course.

Feb.21 at 2:22 pm

albie1kenobi says:
i wasn’t sure about this trade until i came to this board. i’ve always liked what barry brought to the table for Spurs and I thought elson played quite well against dirk/amare in spurts. but i suppose kurt can handle the low post better and longer, with a great mid range jumper to boot. we’ll see what happens in the playoff. i think they are gonna miss Bones barry.

Feb.21 at 5:26 pm

ciolkstar says:
Barry showed flashes in San Antonio but didn’t consistently hit shots in the BIG moments of BIG games. I know he led the league in 3 point percentage one year and his shooting numbers were decent overall. But, I just felt like he played his best when there was no pressure. I’ve been wanting us to move his punk ass for a while, I was just hoping we could bring in some youth. But this IS the Spurs after all…

Feb.21 at 6:41 pm

Dark says:
actually KT’s averaging 7 and 9, playing just 25 min per game.

Feb.21 at 7:06 pm

jj says:
Tariq, I’d like to see how this Gasol thing works out… I’d give him another 10 games before judging the trade… but so far so good! And the Shaq move is by far the worst of them all IMO as well… PHX is really gonna regret it.

Feb.21 at 9:23 pm

AB_40 says:
I’m sorry for my country member francisco elson. But this is a good move for the spurs, even if it is getting the only player who gave TD some fits last playoffs. Him and Oberto as big man and maybe horry(and bonner, man I wish he was matched up with that other red haired guy who plays with dallas)… just checkin into mia hou and yao ming is officialy a freak of nature

Feb.22 at 9:57 am

RedRum says:
Genius… flippin genius… the Spurs traded for the only guy that can defend Duncan 1 on 1… the whole conference has been trading to catch up with the inside terror that TD is, and what do the Spurs do??? they acquire Thomas, TDs kryptonite. awesome move

Feb.22 at 9:59 am

RedRum says:
I would like to see shaq and Pau score against TD, Oberto and Kurt… what people don’t also realise is that Kurt apparently is the only player that can stop amare. Can’t believe that the Spurs pulled that off..

Feb.22 at 11:14 am

BETCATS says:
wow

AB_40 says:
wow great point redrum he should know how to screw stoudamire up come playoff time
