Vince Carter to the Knicks?

by Russ Bengtson

With only days remaining until the trade deadline, the time left for teams to pull off ridiculous franchise-destroying changing deals is short. So it’s likely that those front-office execs holding massive long-term contracts or misfit players or both are getting awfully anxious to get something done. Especially if their high-priced teams aren’t going anywhere.

Hello, Isiah Thomas.

Within this ESPN.com column by SLAM favorite Chris “The Machine” Sheridan is mention of a trade so exciting that, if it happens, I’ll go to every Knicks game for the rest of the season, even the April 9th game against the Bobcats. The rumor is this:

Another source said there had been preliminary discussions on a three-way trade that would include, among other things, [Vince] Carter going to the New York Knicks, Eddy Curry to Miami and the expiring contracts of Jason Williams and Ricky Davis to New Jersey.

If there is a God, this will happen. Apocalypse NOW!

Dan says:
If this is true it will prove that, no matter how hard he tries, Pat Riley cannot live without a big harnessing his offense. And notice I specified “offense”, because as we all know Eddy Curry can’t play a lick of defense, and the only thing he rebounds are cheeseburgers.

The Knicks, where overpaid underplayed happens.

Feb.20 at 12:57 am

Bran says:
Wait, if this happens, what`s going to happen to RJ. Poor him, he`s been having a career year so far.

Feb.20 at 12:59 am

Dan says:
It’s just a guess, Bran, but I would assume that RJ would become the first option for the Nets.

Feb.20 at 1:02 am

Dan says:
Although I will feel bad for Devin Harris. You know J-Will is going to command minutes, which will impede Harris’ development.

tealish says:
VC is a baller. He will turn that franchise around. Watch, once he becomes a Knick, all his stats will skyrocket again and the dunks all the more ferocious! (I live in Canada but not a bitter Toronto fan)

Feb.20 at 1:49 am

T-pav says:
j will needs this he has been locked up in chains under pat riley he needs to be let loose so he can play like he did on the kings and hell have rick davis and jefferson and this will also benefit the heat and then in the draft the nets will need to get a good big man to hold down the post

Feb.20 at 1:54 am

Dan says:
Well, Tealish, apparently you don’t understand VC all that well. Sure, IF the deal were to go through and he end up in a Knicks uniform there is a chance that Vince would feel reborn. He would probably start dunking and playing with heart again, but if you recall, he is also the kind of guy who would quickly go back to his underachieving ways. I loved hearing Leo Rautins say that there is no way Carter will make the Hall of Fame. I totally agree with him; you can’t induct a guy to whom basketball is seemingly an afterthought. He’s in business, not in love. What a waste.

This better happened Vince Carter gonna get rejuvenated again and get put on a SLAM cover DONT CALL IT A COMEBACK!

sean coon says:
if this goes down, and the nets pull at least one more 1st round pick in the swap, thorn will have pulled more magic out of his ass. j-willl can’t command *anything* at this stage of his career. his kings days are so far in the past, along with a bunch of injuries, his role would be to sit on the bench until his contract expires. davis would be a nice one season scoring fill for carter, but then he’d go bye-bye as well at the end of the year. carter is pure, unadulterated garbage. i didn’t want the nets to resign him over the summer. be gone, drama queen!

new jersey is done if this proceeds.
and. i dont see a purpose in sending curry to miami.. him and blount are the same.. both dont get anything done on defense

The Knicks make a push for playoff talent, yet the Cavs remain hopelessly stagnant. Can you trade front office staff?

Feb.20 at 2:52 am

Krayzie Bone says:
Slight plus for Miami, neutral for the knicks, and welcome to memphis for New Jersey. wait till vince dogs it at the garden…

Feb.20 at 2:55 am

Solito says:
Why Rus? So you can watch Carter take fade away threes, while the bench is drinkin Jack Daniels in Gatorade bottles…?

Feb.20 at 2:57 am

Krayzie Bone says:
I think lebron would suplex vince in practice

Feb.20 at 3:04 am

Kevin says:
wow.. don’t like Miami’s end of the deal, but yea i agree that Riley has quite the history of goin after key bigs.. doesn’t really help any team except the Nets rebuild, but its the Knicks - who cares? at least their regular sellout crowds will have someone to watch when they lose now..

Feb.20 at 3:07 am

Kevin says:
PS. i want to see the reception Vince gets when he retires.. “so, he averaged 20 points over his career, was killer at the all-star game & slam dunk contests back when he was popular.. didn’t do much else over the rest of his career..”

Chief says:
Isiah Thomas is a damn fool, But at least Carter’s proven. I mean it in the way that Carter can win games. So what is he decided to not rely on his athleticism like Steve did.(remember he used to dunk too) And look what happened to him, he fell off. When’s the last time you heard the him called Franchise? Uh Huh. He was a streaky scorer at best and never improved his game. Carter get’s respect at all times by defenders cause A. He can knock those shots down, B He can still Dunk , C he can share the rock with an equally impressive teammate(RJ).
I think that new York needs a real baller, come on New York is Mecca and Carter was that man. Stop hating for awhile and think what Carter could do. He could make the Knicks relevant again. He could make Isiah irrelevant to knicks basketball (i cross my fingers). And he couuld bring some actual leadership to that team. Picture this…Roc Boys comes on and out of the locker room comes David Lee (Whoop, Whoop), Nate Rob, Q-Rich, Wilson Chandler (in those ponies, is it okay for me to say that is a gay name for a man to wear?), jared Jefferies, jerome james, RENALDO BALKMAN!, Jamal Crawford, Zach Randolph, Starbury and finally Vinsanity. The Garden is out of control right now on the way to the bench Vince and Steph high five Spike Lee. Then the most hated backcourt (but most gifted!) walks out onto the court to beat the Boston Celtics by 20.
All you hear after the final buzzer? “He’s Unstoppable”

Feb.20 at 3:44 am

Krayzie Bone says:
Carter is pure garbage as a competitor. Nice man it seems, quality guy in the community. As for the knickgasm I just read, I have to point out that this team has no chemistry, no D, and no chance of making the playoffs. And since more than one win is necessary, it doesn’t matter if they beat the celts once, they still lose 20 of the next thirty, with an over the hill, overpaid former superstar who will go down in NBA history as the man that did as little with his gifts as could be imagined.

Feb.20 at 3:48 am

Chief says:
Naw he just keeps getting told to bring life to teams that he never should have played for (sorry toronto).
But Madison square Garden is where that man belongs.

Feb.20 at 3:55 am

Krayzie Bone says:
He was really good his first year, when he had a coach that dogged him (butch carter). when he was given free reign under lenny “do I have a pulse” wilkins, that was the end of his career. He’ll never win a ring, and the knicks are toast until god knows when. If Vince was there 10 years ago, it may have been different, because he wouldn’t have been able to shape the roster in NY the same way he did in Toronto. I don’t get what you mean when you say he shouldn’t have played here. Any player with any competitive fire will bring in no matter where he is. Garnett did it in Minny, in spite of the garbage rosters he got half the time. Vince is a quitter as a player, and he won’t do anything more for new york as a 31 year old with declining athleticism than he did for a new jersey team with a triple double machine, and a vince clone in RJ

If vc makes the hall of fame, then so should H.Miner and J.Rich

Feb.20 at 4:35 am

Chief says:
Did you see Vince play against Iverson in the playoffs?
Last year the buzzerbeater oop that wasn’t supposed to happen.
He jumped over a man. KG got pumped off of that. I wouldn’t want to play in New Jersey either. I’d say Carter’s greatest weakness is the fact he doesn’t score well without the basketball, but in the NBA who does?
People hate on Carter not because he’s a bad player, but because they have nothing better to do but harp on the best dunker to ever touch the hallowed hardwoods of a NBA court. All I’m saying is I can see a revived Carter in Gotham City. New York is the one place where it could be a brand new day. The sun would shine again on the middle Kingdom if he played there.

Rudy, while it’s true the Cavs have done virtually nothing to help Bron out, you absolutely do not want to trade front office staff with the Knicks. Trust me.

Feb.20 at 4:40 am

Don’t want Vince, but I have been waiting for Curry to get shipped out. Next up, Marbury, Randolph, Isaiah, and Peter Vecsey!

no. vince deserves the nets, hes bad but not that awful

Feb.20 at 4:48 am

Nah, VC will thrive in New York. Look at his previous destinations… Canada? … JERSEY?? I’m sure with the bright lights and spike lee, Carter will put on a show and I can’t wait.

Vince might work, he’s been dealing with our media so… that is the toughest part of being a knick

Feb.20 at 5:31 am

yeh whatever, hes wasted so much potential (not that he’ll care), konate but its not like hes playing for the knicks though, even if its the same city thing, (aussie)

peteb80 says:
This would be great deal for the Nets. Vince’s contract is terrible. And if you think going to the most dysfunctional franchise in sports would get Vince “energized” and sh1t then you’re truly delusional. Like he’s one to handle getting booed at home so well.

Feb.20 at 6:13 am

Krayzie Bone says:
I saw vince versus iverson in the playoffs in toronto. He was good then, but that was the apex of his career. He is toast, on a shaq like slide without the rings

Feb.20 at 6:24 am

Krayzie Bone says:
If you cant bring it in the 4th biggest market, why would you bring it in the biggest? Thats wishful thinking

Feb.20 at 6:33 am

Krayzie Bone says:
He’ll pick it up for half a year, then revert to form. He’s a mentally undisciplined player. Like Shaq without the gift of size.

Feb.20 at 6:39 am

LAN says:
on ya hursty same here and chief you’re delusional* vince will hav no stucture wat so ever 2 his game in new york n will just put up fade away 3s 10 times a game.

Feb.20 at 6:49 am

Chief says:
Man Fade aways look so good. Y’all just mad cause you could never fade away three and even contemplate making that shot. Ever think that the reason Carter’s always fades away is because he’s trying to avoid the D that he has always demanded as a upper echelon guard.
As far as I’m concerned JKidd and RJ couldn’t of kept the nets boat afloat in the swamp without him. What a minture weren’t they in the playoffs last year. They ran into Lebron after dismantling the cinderella story Raptors. They are all Vets not young guns. Not to mention the fact that after that series, Lebron bulldozed his way past the Pistons.
Talk Straight, don’t just hate.

Feb.20 at 6:51 am

Krayzie Bone says:
Even if he was playing at his peak, its another senseless move by isaiah, although getting rid of one of your post lumps corrects another error.

Feb.20 at 6:56 am

peteb80 says:
Eddy Curry will give Gordon Gekko a heart-attack. If he sucks and they’re stuck with him until the summer of 2011 then they’re worse off than they were with Shaq.

Feb.20 at 7:09 am

Russ Bengtson says:
If Riles suspended ‘Toine for being out of shape, why would he trade for Eddy Curry? That’s the part I don’t get.

Feb.20 at 7:27 am

Sesa says:
If you are a knick fan, Jason Kapono for Q Richardson is a good deal. While you can throw in Carter, suddenly the knicks are not-so-bad team.

Feb.20 at 7:30 am

peteb80 says:
This makes no sense for the Heat at all. I figured they might still want to make a run at the playoffs this season, but they’d have to win 25 out of their last 31 games to even have a shot at the 8th seed. Won’t happen. So why not wait until the summer?

Feb.20 at 7:36 am

Tariq says:
I think Vince is a great fit for the Knicks…in the same way that mullets are a great fit for rednecks. I wouldn’t want a mullet myself, and I wouldn’t want to be a redneck, but they go together I guess. Or something. Can we go back to dissecting the nuances of the Kidd trade?

Feb.20 at 7:41 am

Tariq says:
pete: I’m guessing Miami are anxious to use Ricky Davis and J-Will’s expiring contracts as trade bait. They can’t do that in the summer.

Feb.20 at 7:54 am

peteb80 says:
Yeah, but wouldn’t they have cap room to sign a free agent when those contracts expire? I guess for them a lot depends on if Marion and Elton Brand opt out this summer or not. Potentially being stuck with an underachieving Curry for three years could be terrible for them.

Feb.20 at 8:08 am

TADOne says:
This is so ridiculous, it’s brilliant.

Feb.20 at 8:13 am

peteb80 says:
Yes, do it. I don’t care about any of the teams or players involved so just start the inevitable drama for our entertainment.

Feb.20 at 8:20 am

Tariq says:
pete: Your way would make more sense for the Heat.

Feb.20 at 8:43 am

peteb80 says:
Without looking at numbers, just summing up the options(and please correct me if I’m wrong.):
1. Marion doesn’t opt out. I think they won’t be able to sign anyone, even with the expiring contracts? So getting Curry via trade is their only option to have three potential All-Stars on the roster next season.
2. Marion opts out and they don’t trade for Curry: Cap space to go after Brand (given that he opts out)
3. Marion opts out but they traded for Curry: No cap space for big free agents, and pretty much the same situation as this year, just with Curry instead of Shaq.

Feb.20 at 9:12 am

Jer Boi says:
as a net fan… i say do it no use of having just vc and rj without kidd trade VC and have RJ try to carry the team with whoever he has..they in the east..prolli will still make the playoffs

Feb.20 at 9:41 am

Cheryl says:
It makes no sense for the Heat. Eddy Curry on a Pat Riley team? Ridiculous. I’d rather see the Heat trade for Mike Miller or Lamar Odom. This deal makes no sense for the Heat. Did I say that already? It deserves repeating.

Feb.20 at 11:48 am

Knicks! says:
Quentin Richardson, Malik Rose = Ben Wallace
Eddy Curry, Jerome James = Ron Artest
And some other players in a trade that would get us Linas Kleiza (like Mardy Collins and Fred Jones and more.. ) That would mean the Knicks team would look like this:
PG: Stephon Marbury (15PPG, 5AST)
SG: Jamal Crawford (19PPG, 5AST)
SF: Ron Artest (17PPG, 6RPG) and Defence!
PF: Zach Randolph (19PPG, 12RPG)
C: Ben Wallace (7PPG, 12RPG) and Defence! Bench:
Nate Robinson: good scorer
David Lee: Rebounder, energy guy & he plays D
Renaldo Balkman: DEFENCE & ENERGY
Linas Kleiza: underrated offensive player
Wilson Chandler: Great player, when given the opportunity to play! But this will never hebben I guess.. just wait for the Lottery
at least we’ll get a TOP5 Pick!

Feb.20 at 12:31 pm

rav says:
“Quentin Richardson, Malik Rose = Ben Wallace
Eddy Curry, Jerome James = Ron Artest” that wouldnt happen in a month of sundays. plus vince would get killed by the ny media :)

Feb.20 at 12:37 pm

Young Chris #3 says:
Knicks! must have gotten so used to Isiah making crazy trades that he thinks all GMs are the same. There’s no way in hell Eddy Curry and Jerome James go to the Kings for Ron-Ron, nor would the Nuggets trade Kleiza for Mardy Collins and Fred Jones. I definitely can see Isiah trading for Ben Wallace though. He likes those impotent big names (former stars who can’t get it done anymore)

Well at this point, being a knicks fan, this Carter bid is the only real thing I have to look forward to. When Isiah made comments stating that he wouldn’t change his roster or try to make any trades, that just fumed me up. If what you’re trying to do isn’t working, make some freakin changes!!! This Vince deal would totally rejuvenate New York. Sure, they won’t make the playoffs but it’ll give them an extraordinary base for next year.

Feb.20 at 2:19 pm

this wont happen. why would the nets want j williams when they’ve just got devin harris???
