Trade: Bonzi Wells for Bobby Jackson
Welcome to Trade Deadline Day, everyone!
While most of the big trades have seemingly all been completed before today, it should still be an interesting next few hours. The deadline is at 3PM, EST.
The Rockets and Hornets have begun the festivities:
The Rockets reached agreement on a deal that will send guard/forward Bonzi Wells and guard Mike James to New Orleans today in exchange for backup point guard Bobby Jackson, individuals with knowledge of the talks said Wednesday night.
The Hornets, currently the top seed in the Wild West, weren’t content to sit on their hands while every other contender in the conference tweaked their roster for the stretch run. Houston, meanwhile, is clearly looking to clear up some cap space (New Orleans is on the hook for Mike James’s $12.7 mil over the next two seasons).
James and Wells should fit in nicely on the Hornets; Byron Scott, after all, could always use an extra veteran or two with some Playoff experience.

Ah sh*t. Not convinced by this. Bobby is a big fan favourite in N’Awlins but I guess with Pargo backing up adequately, it’s not all bad.

Benoit Benjamin says:
nothing against bobby jackson, but why not go after a big banger inside instead of yet another point guard?

Going back a few years Bobby Jackson and Tracy McGrady had an “altercation” during a game and Jackson got thrown out. The video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cyfI7gF0a8

I’m gonna miss Bonzi. I met him once at the House of Pies (24 hours, 30 different types of pie!) in houston at around 3AM. Nice guy.
Feb.21 at 12:20 pm
nick says:
Also, I feel like the fact that he’s the type of dude who gets 3AM pie cravings sort of sums up his career.

Ahh deadline day,GM’s are panicked into stupid or useless trades they wouldn’t otherwise make
Feb.21 at 12:29 pm
Allenp says:
The Hornets just made a major upgrade to their biggest weakness: bench play. James, Pargo, and Wells will provide instant offense of the bench, or if they choose to make Bonzi a starter he’s perfect to put in the post as an alternative to David West. He is great going one on one when motivated. This is an extremely nice move by the Hornets. The Nuggets have to make a move.

RV says:
raynmann, steve francis is pretty much out for the season, so now they only have 3 pgs (rafer, brooks, jackson)
Feb.21 at 12:37 pm
RV says:
izzo, are you refering to the rockets’ gm, or hornets’? Or both?
Feb.21 at 12:39 pm
RV says:
there was a rumor about the rockets trying to acquire Artest, apparently they wouldn’t include Brooks because it would leave them without a backup pg to that was one trade killer, its believed now with jackson they’d be willing to part with brooks, but i think Denver’s offer will be more tempting
Feb.21 at 12:39 pm
Tusch says:
This is much needed bench help for the Hornets. Now they have the depth to play into the summer!

D-Advocate says:
Nice move for New Orleans, I think they needed to solidify their shooting guard spot. Especially since Morris Peterson hasn’t been as productive as he was early on in the season.

Fish says:
I love this for New Orleans, gives them some veteran bench
Feb.21 at 1:46 pm
Brian Shalone says:
I think the trade is really a plain sort of trade. It added a point guard who knows the game of basketball, and knows how to score. Butt we need a tough nasty, rough hard core player whos going to get the rockets going because the west conference is becoming a threat, they are finding ways to build weapons. The rockets need to wake up cause Yao will need help during playoffs. If he is fouled out the the team falls cause hes the nucleus of the team. We dont need guards anymore Austin is doing excellent. But we need will power for them to advance in the playoffs and another guard wont get the job done, and thats a fact!

albie1kenobi says:
another 2 for 1 deal. is bobby jackson that much better than mike james? AND bonzi? this has to be a money move, as i don’t believe they’ll be able to get anything else before the trade deadline.
Feb.21 at 2:53 pm
RV says:
its definitely a money move at the least, mike james’ stock wasnt going to get any higher, bonzi might be leaving after the season for more money, and both of them haven’t been a big part of the rockets hot streak in 2008, mike james hasn’t even played….on paper its one sided, but basketball-wise, it gives the rockets a pg they can actually play and gets rid of 2 bodies on the bench
Feb.21 at 2:55 pm
RV says:
and i’m expecting a big trade SOMEWHERE, one hour left, hopefully something happens, even rumors have stopped swirling around today, but i’ll be pissed if another BS trade goes through like Gasol’s..
Feb.21 at 3:50 pm
sac observer says:
bad trade for NO and peja. Bomzi is a ball hog and when he and peja were in sac together, bonzi was one of many that would not give peja the ball. too bad, peja seemed to be improving; this will set him back again.

a. sam says:
I like this for the Hornets, although I would have liked to see them get a big. Bobby left N.O. with a bang.
Feb.21 at 4:59 pm
Orlando says:
WTF! I can’t believe this trade…over the past winning streak Bonzi has kept them alive when T-mac was slumping….
Feb.21 at 5:13 pm
RV says:
carl landry, steve novak, aaron brooks, and luis scola all have done more to keep the streak alive than Bonzi, bonzi has had solid games here and there, since jan 4 the rockets are 18-3 and Bonzi has only score 12+ 3 times, the only good thing was his high shooting %, but that was due to the many layups and dunks he was getting, basically right time/right place, nothing anyone else cant do
Feb.21 at 5:38 pm
Rob Paxon says:
This is very good for the Hornets’ bench. I’m not sure what good this does Houston unless they were freeing up space for a second move that never happened. Jackson’s a nice, solid veteran back-up at the PG spot and we all know they can be a bit shaky there, but this doesn’t make them better right now.
Feb.21 at 5:44 pm
Orlando says:
A lot of players make a career at being at the right place at the right time…this trade makes not sense to me…..ok so they got G.Green….5.5 pts a game…lol
Feb.21 at 5:53 pm
RV says:
Players who make a career off being at the right place at the right time have more talent than beong able to make a lay up or dunk, Bonzi wasn’t doing much else other than standing close to the rim and waiting for Yao or tracy to pass it to him when they got doubled, or he’d run the 2 on 1 or 3 on 2 fastbreaks and get a layup or free throws. I’m not saying thats all Bonzi can do, but during the rockets streak its what he’s been doing and that can be done just as well by Scola, Landry, Green, Hayes, etc..
Feb.21 at 5:55 pm
RV says:
Dirk wasn’t exactly averaging 20pts a game his first yr, neither was KG, not that Green will be that good, but 5.5 doesn’t define a 22 yr old’s future. They gave up a player with less talent who wasn’t anywhere near their rotation, i think it was a no brainer
Feb.21 at 8:56 pm
RV says:
apparently tmac is pretty pissed about this deal, i think part of its his history with Jackson and he also said he doesnt think changes should have been made with the way they’re playing
Feb.21 at 10:40 pm
jeremy says:
This will tremendously help New Orleans and I will tell you why.Bonzi Wells needed a change of scenery.I think Houston was getting old for him.He didnt have a point guard that could get him good looks and it hurt his performance. Now,what you are going to see is a revitalized Bonzi, ready to shoot or slash when the ball comes to him, notpass to Yao or Mcgrady, which was pretty much what he was doing in Houston.Put him with CP3,David West,Peja Stojackovic and company, this will be a very tough team to beat even in the west.
Feb.22 at 12:17 am
RV says:
I dont think his performance was hurt by Alston, bonzi usually posts guys up or drives to the hoop, he’s not really going to catch and shoot, he just didn’t get minutes, when he did play he got his touches because Yao or tmac were usually resting
Feb.22 at 3:49 am
hursty says:
man im not diggin this trade right now. the rockets needed bonzi, hes rebounding and swingman ability are going to be missed and this places more minutes on t-mac, N.O did a great job though. i hope we pull out of this ok though.
Feb.22 at 3:53 am
hursty says:
we also traded the sharpshooter kirk snyder for gerald green.
