Nellie Ball Strikes Again: Webber to Start

by Marcel Mutoni

When the Golden State Warriors signed Chris Webber last week, no one expected the soon-to-be 35 year old to contribute much to the team besides a bit of veteran leadership and, perhaps some desperately needed passing acumen.

In fact, most observers were confused by the signing of a guy who can hardly move anymore by the one of the League’s fastest and most chaotic teams. And now … he’s going to be a starter?!

Beginning Thursday against the Chicago Bulls, Webber will join Baron Davis, Monta Ellis and Stephen Jackson as permanent Warriors starters, Coach Don Nelson said Monday.

“I think he should start,” Nelson said of Webber, who signed with the Warriors on Jan. 29. “I’m planning on starting him every game.”

Nellie, of course, is a certified basketball genius, so I suppose we sort of have to just trust his judgment here. But seriously, Chris Webber is going to be a starter on this team? Wow.

Webber is done. Unless GS revitalizes him enough to bust out the around-the- back fake pass to dunk….

i wonder if webber doesn’t do starts anymore either??

Mike says:
Your starting 5 doesn’t necessarily have to be your 5 best players, just the 5 that work best together. I can see Webber and his passing game fitting in nicely with Monta, Jax, and the Baron (aka Gunners United). Plus, this will give GSW a better second unit…

Since his Fab 5 days, Chris Webber has always seem to me to be as beautiful as a Greek god. The Venus de Milo has no arm and C-Webb has no knees.

Feb.5 at 12:18 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
Webber could start one night and be on the bench the next because of matchup possibilities. That’s just how Nellie works. It makes sense to start Webber against the Bulls Thursday, but what about other teams? Probably not.

Feb.5 at 1:27 pm

jbn74sb says:
I think Webber, with his knees and style of play, would have a hard time coming off the bench. Get him warmed up, play him about 8 minutes, and then sit him until the 3rd quarter. Get him warmed up at halftime, then play him again for about 8 minutes.

Darksaber says:
Seriously, who didn’t expect Nellie to pull off a stunt regarding C-Webb? Really? Bet he’s gonna expose him for the stiff he is (now) as some sort of sick revenge for the stuff they had going back in the day. Either that or this is gonna be the fastest Webber ever got into game shape in his life, what with losing face and respect looming if he sucks… maybe Nellie’s on to something here, hmm.

ciolkstar says:
I hope he doesnt disrupt the amazing chimistry of this young team because they really play with a sort-of freewheeling intensity that you dont really see in the L right now.with sheer charisma, athleticism and moxy, they have become my favorite team (besides my hometown Spurs of course) But if CWebb and Baron get to beefin it could be trouble. Although, I bet almost all of the current Warriors would have BDiddy’s back if something went down.

Feb.5 at 1:42 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
So they’re going to start four players?

Feb.5 at 1:42 pm

Darksaber says:
Touché Russ, touché.

Feb.5 at 1:43 pm

ciolkstar says:
Webber wont be able to keep up with their frenetic pace either. he’ll probably feign injury just so he won’t have to run. Man, I used to LOVE CWebb. I had to defend him nightly against my dad - who (correctly) always said that he looked to be on the verge of tears after any disagreeable call.

jbn74sb says:
“Permanent” starters. Apparently Biedrins doesn’t qualify.

Feb.5 at 1:53 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Biedrins should always start. He and Jackson are the only starters to play some D out there.

Feb.5 at 1:58 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Al Harrington should quit the team in disgust. Awesome that Nellie immediately gifts a starting spot to a guy that hasn’t even played in the League all season. Why bother going to training camp?

Feb.5 at 1:59 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And I agree that Biedrins should be a permanent starter as well. At least he’s aware that the game doesn’t stop while the other team has the ball.

Feb.5 at 2:19 pm

Nguni says:
that’s funny Russ. Webber’s legs are gon’ give out on him after a week. 10-15 minutes a game is what i’m gon’ give him.

Feb.5 at 2:32 pm

tenorca says:
Nellie also said that Stalone-looking dude we got would be starting and was also an “all-star type talent.” Turns out he’s not. So I wouldn’t take Nellie seriously…ever, really. And, at ciolkstar: definitely. Nothing would be worse.

a_whiteman says:
Chris webber is garbage and has just brought his curse back to the bay too bad g state was on a roll now they won’t be able to win in the playoffs

Feb.5 at 4:08 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
PREDICTION: The Warriors don’t even make the playoffs.

Feb.5 at 4:36 pm

lockedc says:
nelly´s insane.always was.but it should be fun to watch

Feb.5 at 6:05 pm

Kevin says:
i don’t like how Nellie uses these obvious media ploys to try and motivate his players in the short term. jesus, is it that crazy to expect his players to want to play hard for the good of the team? webber starting does NOT help these guys. and what is biedrins, chopped liver?! if i had to pick any 2 players off the Warriors it’d be Biedrins and Davis, in that order. no joke

Feb.5 at 6:05 pm

davidR says:
warriors are a baron or capnjack injury away from missing the playoffs

Feb.5 at 6:40 pm

buddy says:
lots of haters here. probably because all your teams are BORING

Feb.5 at 6:42 pm

davidR says:
not a hater. im a warrior fan, but i’m also a realist. look how well we did at the start of the season without capnjack. can you imagine how we’d do without baron?

Feb.5 at 6:43 pm

davidR says:
but then again, baron’s been ballin out of his mind and hasnt shown any signs of slowing down. i really hope he avoids injury this season, cause they have a decent shot at a 6th 7th or 8th seed

Feb.5 at 6:45 pm

buddy says:
I agree. that was more of a shot at non warrior fans. but lately the dubs have been finding ways to win, so i’m not too worried.

Feb.5 at 6:51 pm

buddy says:
but i guess thats the warriors. teams and fans alike seem to enjoy to severely under rate them. i’d hate to have to watch my team play the warriors in a 7 game series. what a mind f*** that would be.

Feb.5 at 7:15 pm

buddy says:
one more thing. if you watch warrior games, you know that we get off to slllloooooowww starts sometimes (even more so at home). 1st quarters are difficult to watch at oracle. my guess is that webber is providing a real half court game for these guys in mini camp. another thing is that warriors don’t have a consistent way of getting guaranteed points. When its nice to have a real half court offense. I see webber starting/ closing. run run run in between.

Feb.5 at 7:25 pm

Ro says:
I hope this helps me win in fantasy basketball…

Feb.5 at 7:41 pm

davidR says:
yea, warrior games are too erratic. they either fall behind early and make huge late game runs, or go way up ahead early and blow a huge lead toward the end. it’s exciting to watch

Feb.5 at 10:24 pm

Dacre says:
Webber to GS…makes the Shaq to PHX notion sound plausible…. (if GSWarr can slow down so can we!!)

Feb.6 at 6:55 am

bates says:
get ready 2 see alot of one of the most awkward shooting styles ever. THE CRANE!!! no jump but high extended arms.
