MORE PERFECT THAN PERFECT!!!

Don’t you just love life!?!?!?!?!?!? I KNOW I DO!

By Sam Rubenstein

What to say, what to say…

I figure I have 50 to 60 more years to go in this lifetime, knock on wood. I will never forget how I felt last night, how I feel now, for the rest of my life. I almost feel like I should just “retire” as a sports fan, because this is as good as it can ever possibly get. You always hear the cliche “Nobody can take our championship away from us” once it has been one. It’s true! The memories of this journey will last forever.

Seriously, what am I supposed to say? I’m a fan of the team that just pulled off the biggest upset in the history of sports, taking down an undefeated team for the ages, which is no more. For me, everything going forward is anti-climactic, except when I get to think about the Giants miracle run.

I never believed until Belicheater was walking off the field with time still on the clock. Even after the Plaxico TD, I was yelling at people in my apartment to settle down…

And then the guy from Penn State that Ryan wouldn’t shut up about, just violated Brady, reducing Mr. Perfect into throwing the ball 60 yards in the air into double coverage. I really still can’t believe this has happened.

And Eli Manning… ELI MANNING!!! Today’s world is so much about people screaming insults at each other, or trying to be as hateful and sensational as possible. Eli took so much abuse - from myself and all of my friends, and from everyone that has ever seen him play football - and he never got off the high road. He never stooped to our level, he just kept working hard, performed on stages that were supposed to be too big for little brother, delivered impossible results.

That play with David Tyree… (DAVID TYREE!!!) I have never seen anything like that in my life.

The Giants defense, in particular the D-Line… you ain’t so pretty no more Tommy Boy!

One man believed in Eli all along. His name is Khalid Salaam, who before the playoffs jokingly said “Eli Manning Super Bowl MVP.” Thank you Khalid! I do remember a few weeks ago Lang was being his bitter self, and he even said “You guys are acting like you won the Super Bowl…” Ooooooh, you better call in sick today. The hate from Salaam and Whitaker, as they cheered for Bill Simmons’ Patriots was a powerful aide to the timeless world champion GMEN.

But enough about them, as they fall by the wayside just like the “Greatest Team of All-Time.”
There was the drinking of the champagne in the house of Rubenstein. My friend’s fiance brought cupcakes with plastic Super Bowl rings to the party. I have my ring. LIFE IS AWESOME!

Thank to you everyone who sent congratulatory emails, facebook messages, text messages, voicemail messages, etc.

So, Kobe got a teammate… Lots of stuff from Holly coming if it’s not up already. You never have to hear about football again from me, unless I’m caught up in reminiscing about the greatest win in history of battle!

I will be late to work tomorrow cause I’ve got a PARADE to attend.

PHOTO UPDATES. Ben Osborne and I celebrate.

And a close-up of the victory cupcakes:

ohhh sammmm!! I was as pumped for you as I was for Gasol! That Tyree catch was absolutely insane and had ME hopping off of the couch, much to the surprise of everyone around me. Working on cutting down the game notes because no one is going to be able to make it through 5000+ words…Enjoy that parade and may you bask in the sweet afterglow!

I feel real dumb right about now. I believed Eli could pull it through but I thought the Pats were still going to win. I owe an apology to Eli because I bashed his ass all season and he proved me wrong. Proud the Mississsippi bred boy pulled it through. play wit it.

Good for you Sam!

Feb.4 at 9:53 am

Jake Appleman says:
Congrats to Sam and Ben and all the Giants fans out there. I thoroughly enjoyed that upset despite a 102.6 fever. I will forever remember the game as the, “I’m dizzy, wait–is this really happening?” game. We share a stadium, and I’d like to share in a small piece of the joy, mostly because I hate the Pats, but still…You couldn’t help but feel so good for aw shucks Eli.

Feb.4 at 9:55 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
also Sam, a Post Up is coming, but it will be delayed. Way too much going on this morning!!!

Feb.4 at 9:57 am

Ryne Nelson says:
Hey Holly, when might we expect the Post Up?

Feb.4 at 9:58 am

Cheryl says:
Hey, why did I just get moderated? I said nothing wrong. It was a congrats to Sam and all Giants fans. And to think about some of the stuff on here…

Feb.4 at 10:01 am

Ryan Jones says:
Jay motherf*cking Alford. I f*cking told you, Sam.

Feb.4 at 10:01 am

riggs says:
“Even after the Plaxico TD, I was yelling at people in my apartment to settle down…” haha so did i, i even told people to stop jinxing us (saying we won too early) when the pats had the last possesion, because you can never count tom and randy out til the last second but WHOOOOOOOOO, we won baby!

Feb.4 at 10:06 am

Keith says:
Bravo to the New Jersey Monstermen. They scored a try in the last 35 seconds of normal time to score the win. Bad luck to the New England Walkers who tried with all their mite to clinch the victory but could not achieve it. Hooray to American fans the world over!

Feb.4 at 10:10 am

Ryan Jones says:
Ah, Keith, you silly, silly foreigner.

Feb.4 at 10:13 am

white hot eboy says:
As Lang and Khalid languish in sorrow and envy, Sam and Ben, I’m glad you guys can stand strong today in the face of evil.

The ghosts of Rubinstein and MacKenzie speak. Apparently heart attacks aren’t what they once were.

Feb.4 at 10:17 am

matt the jazz fan says:
Congratulations Sam!
Stayed up till 5AM (and was at work at 8.30) here in Brussels. And it was worth every second! Great, gripping game!
What a great great D-line.

Feb.4 at 10:25 am

Tariq says:
ُEli deserves much credit, but come on now: the MVP was Osi.

Feb.4 at 10:27 am

riggs says:
actually the mvp was Tuck. without his stops we would have gave the pats more possesions

Feb.4 at 10:29 am

white hot eboy says:
Eli was clutch all night. Every big third down he converted. No question the ENTIRE D-Line could have shared the award, but Eli is the King of New York today. David Tyree will be remembered forever.

Feb.4 at 10:31 am

Ryan Jones says:
Actually, the MVP was junior point guard Stanley Pringle… My bad, I thought we were talking about the REAL upset of the weekend: Penn State 85, No. 7 Michigan State 76.

Feb.4 at 10:32 am

white hot eboy says:
I saw that and said “Jones must be out of his mind”.

Feb.4 at 10:37 am

Ryan Jones says:
Not out of my mind, but very happy for a team and coach that have not had much luck lately. I actually didn’t go to the game, for no other good reason than I was doing laundry, and I figured UCLA-Arizona on ESPN would be a more entertaining option. I’m glad I watched the Bruins — Kevin Love just keeps making me look smart — but it was frustrating when ESPN started doing the bottom line “Upset Alerts” with 15 minutes left in the PSU-MSU game and my boys up 9. I was convinced the Spartnas would still come back and win by 10. Glad I was wrong, and kicking myself I wasn’t there to see it. Oh well.

Feb.4 at 10:38 am

Ryan Jones says:
Sorry to hijack, Sam. Back to basking in super glory.

Feb.4 at 10:38 am

white hot eboy says:
Jones, who’s NBA stock is more valuable at the moment, Love or Hansbourough?

Feb.4 at 10:39 am

white hot eboy says:
One question only, Sam, since Ryan mentioned Love.

Feb.4 at 10:42 am

Ryan Jones says:
Dunno, and obviously I’m biased. Check one of them fancy draft websites why dontcha.

Feb.4 at 10:46 am

white hot eboy says:
Thanks for your astute knowledge, buddy.

Feb.4 at 11:18 am

white hot eboy says:
I just realized that my wife bought similar cupcakes with plastic rings like Sam’s friends fiance. I couldn’t think of food, fourth quarter was on my feet, screaming into the tv (literally nose to screen) each time a Patriot fu*ked up. I thought I burst a blood vessel when Eli escaped and Tyree made The Catch.

A Warrior reference? Well then in tribute to said maniac……. When the moon aligns with the spirits of Warriors past and the cosmos turn like the sword of ancient warriors from the days of yore entering the bellies of dark beasts
A group of warriors adorned in blue
will slay a mighty dragon
with blue and red blood oozing from the wound inflicted by the searing hot blades of the azure soldiers, creating their leagacy in a blur of broken limbs and ripped flesh.
THEN..as the moon disapeers and the sun rises in the east…….the blue warriors stand over the field of battle…..surveying their handiwork and realize that they……ABOVE ALL OTHERS……are champions. Boy,I miss that crazy fool.

Congrats, Sam!! I was just telling my Dad before the game that the Giants reminded me a lot of the ‘95 Rockets…

Congrats Sam,I pretty much made all my friends root for The Giants because if they lost SLAMonline might have died for your week of mourning, but last night was one helluva experience.Thank you Eli Manning, you made me $124.

Feb.4 at 12:22 pm

Madtice says:
I stayed up till 5 am too to watch this game (form The Netherlands, you know, that small country where they cracked the Natalee Holloway case). Glad I did. I was rooting for the Giants because of Rubenstein, isn’t that funny? Never met Sam in my life, but last night I was thinking about you when the Giants had that drive in the last 2 minutes… The Catch II, right?

Feb.4 at 12:54 pm

white hot eboy says:
Yep, same cupcakes and same rings. And Sam is that supposed to be a belly shirt or is it a kids large? And how the fu*k did you find one so quick? Damn, I can’t wait to get my hands on one. That’s two happy dudes right there. Love it.

Feb.4 at 1:04 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
you know what… I believe it is a kids large. This thing is cutting off my circulation and I don’t care! Stopped by Modell’s on the way to work. I had to get off and back on the train.

Feb.4 at 1:15 pm

Slick Nick Da Ruler says:
Holla Sam, I’m happy for you and all Giants fans. The Game was intense. Kevin Love and Hansborough are Luke Waltons at best.

Feb.4 at 1:21 pm

Cub Buenning says:
Ryan, do you not have the BIG 10 network. I was rockin’ both of those games (alongside a shady CUSA game on CSTV) but leaned more towards the PSU game as the Bruins made things academic early over my boy Chase and the ‘Cats. Geary, who? Pringle was nice. Prospect? Love over Hansborough. Both will be solid pros, but Love has the ability to be a star…. in my estimation. BEN/SAM-CONGRATS! ENJOY!
I am still living off the fumes of the 97+98 Super Bowls…..

Feb.4 at 1:24 pm

Cub Buenning says:
Slick Nick, please pass your drugs to the left.
Luke Waltons? Wow. Both have immeasureable motors that will allow them to grab 10 boards a night fo’ life. Not to mention being 20 point a night guys on two of the top teams in the nation. Tyler will probably never be a star, but…..

Feb.4 at 1:31 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
had to make this front page image… the magnitude of the whole thing. And yesterday hours before the game I was thinking to myself how rare a trip to the Super Bowl can be. Nothing’s guaranteed. I am not taking this for granted. Best win evah!!!!
And yes the Ultimate Warrior is a complete lunatic and a creative inspiration of mine. Another ultimate warrior: Justin Tuck.

Feb.4 at 2:25 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
after the tyree catch i texted ben and asked if he though that was the greatest catch ever. after thinking about it for a while i decided that it is. i’ve watched a lot of football in my life and i have never seen a better catch and thats not even considering eli’s escape. The whole 4th qt was dope actually, however, it wasn’t the best ever. it doesn’t beat the steelers/colts afc divisional rd from 2 years ago. football has never been better but last night the giants/pats came close. as a eagles fan its a weird feeling today. its still eff the giants but i’m not upset or pissed. it is what it is.

Feb.4 at 2:47 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Given the acrobatics and the stakes, the Eli to Tyree play is about as good as I’ve ever seen in the No Fun League.
And Cub, NO, I do not have the Big Ten Network. It’s almost too absurd to mention, but since you asked… most folks in State College have Comcast Cable, and Comcast (logically, in my opinion) doesn’t carry it because they won’t put it on the ESPN tier where the BTN wants it. I actually paid extra for all the FSN during college football season and am loving it now that the Pac-10 hoops are so dope this season. In the meantime, the BTN can eat a d*ck.

Feb.4 at 2:47 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
The Tyree catch was ludicrous. Respect to Eli for getting out of what looked to be a certain sack, too. I wonder how Jeremy Shockey feels today? I wonder how Tiki Barber feels? (Although I can guess–haha, jerk.) I wonder how that injured Giant feels who got busted for ‘extreme DUI’ (what is that?) and got sent home two days before the game? I KNOW how Bill Simmons feels, and I f*cking love it. ESPN should have to post his moronically suicidal “‘86 Celtics vs. the ‘07 Patriots” on the front page for the rest of eternity or whenever they decide actual news comes before mindless sensationalism. My money’s on eternity, by the way. In closing, respect to the New Jersey Giants. May your parade route be–wait, the parade is WHERE?

Feb.4 at 2:48 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Also, fellas, please hold a cupcake for me. Or just mail it out with my LeBron issue. Thanks.

Feb.4 at 2:50 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Ryan, in all honesty, for those who aren’t rabid Kevin Love fans, that UCLA/Zona game was 100 percent awful. Also, I forgot the word “column” somewhere in the previous paragraph. You can figure out where. And hopefully the Giant victory doesn’t propel Rudy Giuliani back into the Presidential fray. Has he taken credit for it yet?

Feb.4 at 2:53 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
They showed Shockey during the game. He had at least 5 different types of alcohol in front of him. Tiki… thanks for the motivation. Simmons… you can’t write about how you’re afraid to jinx things and then go out and jinx them. Only has himself to blame. LOVE IT!
Tyree catch was the greatest play evurrrr when you throw in the escape and the situation.
Parade is on Broadway, Wall St. to City Hall.

Feb.4 at 2:54 pm

Ben Osborne says:
I got classy, congratulatory text messages from Khalid and Aggrey Sam (our high school expert and also a rabid Eagle fan). I still hate the Eagles but I respect the unexpected and classy responses. Ryan, I’ve got those Fox channels too and they’ve been awesome for Pac 10 hoops. I’ve definitely watched more OJ Mayo than, say, Jamal Crawford, this season.

Feb.4 at 2:55 pm

Ben Osborne says:
Collins: how was the view from Europe??

Feb.4 at 3:08 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
No, I know where the parade is. Funny that it’s a) on ‘Super’ Tuesday (vote first, please), and b) in a state where they neither play nor practice. Glad my taxes can somehow support them, though. All in all I’d rather send a portion to Chicago to get the Bulls a scoring big.

Feb.4 at 3:13 pm

white hot eboy says:
I think the parade should run from Giants Stadium, over to Liberty State Park, down Tunnelle Avenue into Jersey City, over to Bayonne, down the hill into Hoboken, and end up at City Hall. Equal opportunity love and cover a ton of distance.

Feb.4 at 3:19 pm

Ben Osborne says:
Tomorrow morning I will vote in New Jersey (where I live and the Giants play), then go to the parade in New York (where I work and the Giants get feted). I’m confused, too, but I’m just happy there is a parade to attend!

Feb.4 at 3:28 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
True that. Enjoy.

Feb.4 at 3:33 pm

Myles Brown says:
Tyree. Catch for the ages. Eli & Peyton in back to back Superbowls? Unbelievable. But up until the fourth quarter the Puppy Bowl was still better…

Feb.4 at 3:33 pm

D-Advocate says:
whew! What GREAT GAME, and finally a team from New York gets to celebrate a championship. New York, New Jersey, like Nas said in a chorus, REPRESENT!REPRESENT! at the parade in a Sea of Blue.

Feb.4 at 3:40 pm

Jukai says:
Lemme tell you. There was more hugging in my friends apartment then any of us straight guys ever imagined us doing. It was like we had just watched something impossible, something that you’d dream and then wake up and say “man… wish that happened in real life.” I’m just so ridiculously happy, even now everyone around my school (except for the people who came from Boston) are just so ridiculously happy. Everyone is walking aroudn with Giant jerseys and hats and foam gloves… it’s just such a great day.

Feb.4 at 3:40 pm

How much work is getting down around the Dome today?
I love Pac-10 hoops, the games are almost always great (minus that disaster at Pauley the other night.) Stanford v. Wazzu was a dope game earlier in the day.

Feb.4 at 5:34 pm

Ben Osborne says:
Completely unexpected Super Bowl titles will make any smile absurd. Co-workers have been telling me i look like a 5th grader today…though I’m a little more hung over than the average 5th grader.

Feb.4 at 6:07 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
Omar, I was PISSED when I saw the rings. And then these two girls that came over wanted to drink champagne BEFORE the game. I refused to take part in any of that. But once it ended… the ring’s the thing! We have earned the right to look stupid today.

Feb.4 at 6:32 pm

Ben Collins says:
They aired the Super Bowl here on this network called ORF, which I think is run by Keebler Elves. The play-by-play guy was a dead ringer for Ron Paul and they had this guy doing color who looked like Steve Young if he had whooping chlamydia.
Every once in a while, post-STD Steve would tell this story in German for four or five minutes then break out a name at the end that you knew — one time it was Refrigerator Perry — then Ron Paul would laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh. WHOO that was a good one I’m sure.
I was waiting for ClappySteve to say “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall!” after that Alford sack through the entire Pats’ offensive line. But no dice. I guess they’re not there yet.
With 2:28 left, I said I’d that I’d go and adopt some Franco-Dutch child from a orphanage just to name it “Eli Plaxico Collins” (even his last name is a tribute to the dearly departed Kerry) if Eli pulled off this last drive.
I must go do my civic duty now. Eli Plaxico, you will one day return to the states, touch our sacred trophy received on The Greatest Day and proudly declare, “Ich bin ein Giants fan! Or Berliner? Whatever it is!”

Feb.4 at 6:34 pm

SLAM ONLINE | » “Ready” or Not… says:
[…] Lance Stephenson remains on track… Giants or no Giants, I recognize that my jobs is still to focus on basketball, which is what I did for the early part of this weekend, checking out the “SNY Invitational” at New York University’s Manhattan gym. I put the event’s name in quotes because it was basically a contrived gathering with little significance: four public schools from New York playing in a two-day tournament in the middle of the season…no unique match-ups or anything real at stake. That said, the event drew nice crowds (about 2,000 a night) and good media coverage because the people promoting it (CornerStone Promotions and the “Mets network”, SNY) spread the word and gave it live television coverage, which is an unfortunately rare thing for high school hoops in New York City. The other, main reason the event was a success was because it had the city’s marquee player, Lance “Born Ready” Stephenson, taking part. I experienced the enthusiasm for watching the tournament when I arrived at the venue about 10 minutes after the first game (Frederick Douglass Academy-Cardozo) had begun and found a chaotic scene at the front door. I eventually got in and settled in to watch Cardozo (led by Iona-bound guard Trinity Fields) beat up on undersized FDA, 59-45. […]

Sam, the life you’ve lived ALONE gives you the right to look stupid everyday.

Feb.4 at 11:03 pm

Mehmet says:
Wow.. I’ve been watching football for only a few years now, but that Eli to Tyree catch was the greatest play I’ve ever seen. Seriously, I’ve watched all the “Top 50 Greatest catches/plays/touchdowns” videos and I don’t remember anything like that. The only way it could be better is if it was a TD catch on a 4th down play or something. But it led to the winning TD so it is still huge. Those “Top Plays” videos need updating.

Feb.5 at 5:55 pm

tuplajuusto says:
Yes, congratulations to Sam.. for being a fan of a team? That really takes some guts to pull off. Wtf? What’s next, congratulating the hell out of someone who voted for the presidential election winner? “Well done, you really came through in the clutch!” I do not get it, probably because I’m not from, you know, over there.. Anyways, a great game. Although the Pats should feel a bit disappointed for not stopping the deciding drive. Samuel dropped an interception and Eli should’ve been given a wedgie on that play involving Tyree and 98% of all the luck in the world. Had there been a stop, the game would’ve been over. Karma, I guess. Or evolution.. oh, wait. Ya’ll don’t believe in that thing, can’t be it. Another thing, what the hell is with all the attitude towards Bill Simmons? Has he personally insulted one of you and the rest are experiencing some kind of a sympathy-hate-reaction or what? Peculiar behaviour.
