It’s Official: Jason Kidd Is a Dallas Maverick Again!
The Mavs have officially enterred the Arms Race in the West.
The 2008 Western Conference Playoffs are going to be bananas, crazy, nuts, absolutely insane — You get the point:
The New Jersey Nets have now reached a deal with the Dallas Mavericks to send Jason Kidd back to the team that drafted him in exchange for rising star Devin Harris in a package deal. It sounds like Dallas may also get Antoine Wright in a separate deal.
You could argue that Dallas gave up a little bit too much for Kidd, but in today’s NBA, you gotta roll the dice. Well, unless you’re San Antonio of course. More details to come …
Seriously, can the Playoffs start like, right now?!

The Nets straight robbed the Mavs. They gave up about half their team and two first round picks!! I guarantee they dont win the title…in fact I think this makes them worse. Kidds shooting will be completley exposed in their offense.

Guess Cuban is betting the house they won’t have to face the Spurs. Seems he built that whole team to beat the Spurs and now he is building a team to beat Golden State ? This definitely makes the Mavs weaker against the Spurs - maybe better against the Nuggets or Jazz? … risky bet … maybe he consulted Sir Charles prior to pulling the trigger??

As a hornets fan, any hope I had for noise outside the first round has dwindled pretty quick the last month. And with Webber back in GS and Kidd back in Dallas, can we expect more return to the 90’s action? Stackhouse to Philly! Camby to T Dot! Bring back Larry Johnson!

Popovic is frigging grinning at this one… Kidd for Desagana - Devin - STACK. In a conference where 10 teams have winning records and are battling for 8 playoff spots. with Eddie Jones as backup SG. And Damp… oh forget this. Mavs are in trouble.
Feb.13 at 5:11 pm
Jess says:
The Mavs gave up too much. JKidd is an awsome player but he is also aging and you just gave up half of your team..including Harris who has been playing good ball (before the injury of course). The only reason I like the trade is for Kidd, considering he wanted out desperately..but I mean who could blame him. Although I am definately now a Mavs fan, I wanted to see him out of Jersey because he deserves to be on a better team…We will have to wait to see whether or not this will be as good as Dallas obviously envisions it..I mean they gave up about half of their team….

in any case, mavs’ gonna need some people to fill those roster spots. Spree, come on down!

Sara says:
As a Mavs fan, I absolutely hate this deal. I spent all last week praising the savvy of the Mavs’ front office and Mark Cuban for not pulling a kneejerk trade in response to all the other moves out west. Sigh. I absolutely agree with Russ. They should have just held on to Nash and allowed that team to grow together instead of blowing it up. We have no worthwhile backup PG, no help for Dampier up front. God, this is abysmal. Thank you, Mark Cuban, for ruining my week.

Oh really? two first round picks hmm? Did the offer to build that arena in Brooklyn for Jay-Z as well? Jesus! this is incredible. HOW exactly did Cubes make all that money. Seriously HOW? Just write a multimillion dollar cheque and leave… now. Gawd, i would love to hear Avery’s true opinion of this mess. Not the prepared one for tomorrow, the true, unedited, angrier than Moses thoughts of a coach who has an incessant meddler making decisions for him.
Feb.13 at 5:43 pm

The Mavs don’t have a reliable starter at the 2, and haven’t for a while. Jones starts, but Avery doesn’t seem fond of him. TAD: the irony just set upon me. My team manages to fall apart once every year.
Feb.13 at 5:51 pm
Darksaber says:
TADOne, i was THE Eddie Jones fan numero uno growing up, tailored most of my game after his style, but Mavs can’t be serious about a championship by starting him, excellent shape or not. The west alone is the feeding ground of one special species named Mambiatch Bryant, who eats up specimen such as Eddie now.

This can only be the opening gambit right people? Cubes is going to use Ason - Kidd’s appeal and somehow lure Bron Bron over to the Mavs for crumbs, right? Not even Cuban can be so stupid to pull off a 6 for 2 Deal involving three glue guys, for a 35 year old Playmaker? Someone help me make sense of this nightmare.

as for basketball, i thought the cardinal rule for trading was “never trade big for small, never trade old for young”? i still don’t think this will turn out as bad as some of you make it out to be, but it sure make it a hell lot more interesting in the west.
not to mention the issue of where kidd will be playing in the all star game.

just give the trade time to sink in…the shaq trade was not thought to be great for the suns and a few days later people were praising it as the move the suns needed to make. Ason Kidd has what Dirk lacks….they still could possibly make the WCF….if they don’t run into golden state that is

Thanks for the enlightenment Sara. i read that during senioritis season so it’s like i didn’t read it (i swear i read it then though). i suppose i can read it again but i got more interesting things to read now.
i agree with blackice that kidd has what dirk lacks: leadership and mental toughness. that in fact is the team’s weakness. sir charles loves to question teams’ identities, and i ask what was mavs identities before the trade? it wasn’t like they were going to win a championship with that cast anyway. i truly believe champs have to have that “champ look” with attitude to match. the mavs have none of that. the biggest concern i have is not the lack of size or depth of the mavs, but how much kidd has left in his tank.
Feb.13 at 6:17 pm
albie1kenobi says:
yeah Darksaber, it’s a quick read (i just have a long reading list that i have to get through first). go for it.

Cuban and A. Johnson, last couple of weeks, have been talking up the value of D Harris as almost “all-star” level and “indispensable”…do you think that was more trade negotiation tactic or their true value assessment of the kid…I do not have the league pass and therefore I have not seen enough of the kid to make that determination…is he the “Tony PArker” stopper as publicized or another self proclaimed “xxx stopper” a la Ruben Patterson…how is he in the matchups against Nash, D. Williams and Chris Paul???
Funny how marcus has not played in any of the games or very little minutes the past week or so…was this ain anticipation of the trade or LFRANK dog house demotion???
Feb.13 at 6:19 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
I find it funny that Kidd is continually lauded for his “leadership and mental toughness” when he straight-up quit on the Nets. If he’s such a catalyst, shouldn’t they have been a contender? And why on earth would they even think of trading him? Also, it’s not like any of that “leadership and mental toughness” rubbed off on Vince. How will it help Dirk? (I’m not just busting on you, albie, Chris Broussard was going on about those traits as well.)
Feb.13 at 6:24 pm
albie1kenobi says:
none taken Russ. my counter is that, the other nets tuned kidd out (i don’t think you can question his effort with his trip-doubs at his age), the same way that players eventually tune out coaches.
although i’m sure you’d have a much better insight inside of the nets locker room than i do. i only have a league pass that i don’t even have time to use.

I haven’t been to a Nets game in a while, and I can’t say I have much insight to offer as to the inner workings of the team. Agreed that Kidd’s time was basically up in Jersey for whatever reason, and that maybe no one can get to Carter. That said, it’s still a crazy risk for Dallas.

It’s funny, because I just read Simmons’s ESPN column about the Shaq trade, how it’s good that teams are at least doing SOMETHING–and I agree to an extent–but a lot of these trades seem like the equivalent of hitting on 19.

Lebron is officialy the new KG. Very strong and talented, but locked on a disgusting team. He might get some help in 2029.(when the sons of Latrell Sprewell and Sam Cassell get drafted in the league).
Feb.13 at 6:36 pm
SAKEPASSE says:
As far as the trade:1- Given the circumstances and lack of leverage this was an outstanding move on the part of Rod Thorn and the Nets organization. The Nets will miss KIDD’s intangible leadership and “will to compete” qualities the most because his skills as far as running, shooting, defense on quick guards “a la tony parker” and even passing (uncanny numerous unforced turnovers this year) has been deteriorating for the last couple of years despite the impressive triple double stats this year. But in reality, these endearing qualities went out the door once he went public with his trade demands basically flipping the bird to his teamates, coach and organization the middle finger!! It will be interesting to see who between RJ and VC publicly and on the court assert the leadership role of this team now that Kidd is gone. RJ has the personality but lack the skillsand VC has the skills but definitely lacks the personality….

you can’t compare dirk to vince carter…..yeah dirk is soft but not vince carter soft it’s like someone with a high iq (vince) who doesn’t work hard and gets nowhere versus someone with low iq (dirk) who puts effort and has some success. Vince was and probably still is waaaaaaaaay more talented but doesn’t have the work ethic nor the killer instinct while dirk willl work and seems to care whether he wins or not.
Feb.13 at 6:46 pm
Keith says:
Dallas are panicking. Sure on paper, having Kidd is a great thing, beautiful in fact but in reality, why fix something that’s not broke? The major reason the Mavs sucked last year was the coaching decisions and Dirk. Neither of those two have changed - and rightly so - so why make the trade? I’m confused.

there’s no reason to evaluate the shaq trade until the playoffs. the kidd trade will be interesting to watch in the regular season, as mavs will have to develop an identity on the fly. it’ll be interested to see what avery employs.

Gotta disagree with you Dacre, it’s the West that’s turning into the ABA–overpaying for past-their-prime stars. Devin Harris has more All-Star appearances in his future than Jason Kidd, ditto Marion and Shaq. If anything, those trades assure that the competitive balance should start to tip back the other way sooner rather than later.

All I know is that an Eastern Conference team will win the Championship this year. Why? Because EVERY Western Conference playoff series is going the distance. THICK on the battle front through every round, the dusts settles and theres a relatively composed Celtic, Pistons or Cavs outfit ready for a 7 game fight in the final
(Give Atlanta 2 more seasons and they’ll be there too…). As a side point: ktokyo…..When I’m making custon teams with my mate Lloyd, I’M ALWAYS TAKING SHAQ and Nash… Lloyd ALWAYS goes for a Kidd/Dirk Combo…. this is like our CUSTOM TEAM DREAMS come true too..

Fark yeah - the Nets finally make a great move. As much as I love Kidd’s qualities…they got good current value and friggin excellent future value out of this deal. If they can now lose Carter and gain Jermaine Oneal…next year could be a pretty year indeed!

Well, apparently Stack is coming back to the Mavs (from what I read on dallasbasketball.com). From his comments it sure seems he gave his okay to be in the trade: “I feel great. I get 30 days to rest, then I’ll be right back’’ he said. “I ain’t going nowhere.’’

So the it’s basically Devin and Diop for Kidd. That sounds okay to me if you’re not looking to far into the future. The way teams are trading for these old guys, I get the feeling this might be the NBA’s last season ever, but nobody has told us yet.

Dacre: The way things are now, the East has just as good a shot at winning titles as the West, because in the end it’s just one seven-game series. There’s no advantage at being in the stronger conference. Although there should be. Which is funny, because I’ve been working on a column that addresses that exact issue. Stay tuned.

Hahahaha. I heard that too. It’ll be real funny if the trade winds up getting voided altogether. Wish I could be in the Nets locker room when Kidd came back. “Um, hey guys. Good thing that trade didn’t go through, huh? Haha, I didn’t want to go anywhere anyway. Guys? GUYS? Hey, where are my shoes?”

if I were the Nets I’d send Jay-Z to Dallas to convince Deavan George to come to NJ. think of what Jigga can do: lifetime VIP booth and open bar at all 40/40 establishments, and the girls along with it.

Nastru: Larry Hughes haters have every right to talk sh!t about him. Just because he had a couple of good games, that doesn’t justify “us” not to talk smack about him. He has played like crap for two years and getting very handsomely paid for that too. So shut up.

Hmmmm… I always forget how many people who lie in San Antonio post in this forum. I think the Mavs are a little worse for the wear from thsi trade but certainly not because they can’t beat San Antonio. The Spurs have been playing awful this season, with Tony Parker pulling his best Camby impression and being injured twenty seconds, and having the total depth on their team to two people. Duncan may be the best PF of all time, but unless he can score 25 straight, they ain’t winning anything. I’m just interested to see how Jason Kidd fits in with the Mavs… Devin Harris is a good defender and a great scorer, but not really a great distributor. The Mavs are a completely one-on-one team, with ball movement really just ouside the perimeter until one player decides to take it in himself. Jason Kidd is coming in and running the team through him… this gonna work?
