Gregg Popovich Isn’t Enjoying the Gasol Trade
League-wide reaction to Pau Gasol’s shocking move to the Lakers has ranged from surprise to complete befuddlement. While everyone has been scratching their heads in disbelief as to what Memphis’s management was thinking when it practically gave away their franchise player, and turned the Lakers into title contenders overnight, only Gregg Popovich has expressed any sort of outrage.
Russ hinted at it in his game notes this morning, and here’s the money quote from the dry-witted Spurs coach:
“What they did in Memphis is beyond comprehension,” Popovich told SI.com. “There should be a trade committee that can scratch all trades that make no sense. I just wish I had been on a trade committee that oversees NBA trades. I would have voted no to the L.A. trade.”
Wow, talk about catty. The road back to the Finals for San Antonio has now become decidedly tougher, and Pop is clearly not amused.
Anyone know when the Grizzlies and Spurs play next? I have a feeling Popovich is going to strangle Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace before the game.

and on that note … Lakers to the top. Vich is mad about knowing the Lakers and spurs are fighting for position and the Lakers are going to get it.

Pop can just have Robert Horry checking Derek Fisher to the tables — and cause Gasol and Bynum to miss the next game.

Pop wouldn’t have reacted that way to that trade one year ago…maybe he doesn’t see his Spurs repeating this year…and hopefully he’s right

He didn’t really “tell SI.com” as much as he “told a group of 27 reporters.” Maybe Mannix asked the question, but he sure wasn’t alone with Pop at the time.

4 NBA championships and conference championships since 1999. I wonder why Pop made that statement. Could he be wanted 5 so much. Do you think he would have accepted a trade like that? Interesting…

Great trade for the Lakers…Pop should just worry about his own team…a committee….ahaha!! On another note…I don’t think the West has ever been tougher…well not since I’ve been following basketball, which is only about 15 years, but anyway. The Miami Heat are bad…I have lost most of the respect I had for D-Wade. Come on, 9 wins in the poor man’s West…aka the East.

he was joking..that’s Popovich sense of humor, at least about the committee part..is anyone actually going to deny that the trade was ridiculous though?..suspicious.. doesn’t really matter to me..it’ll be even funnier to see Kobe fail like he usually does as a team leader, even with the best supporting cast in the NBA now..

it was definitely a joke.
Kobe is doing a great job leading this team, the game against Miami (I know, it’s just Miami. But they came out with a lot of energy and played their best ball in quite a while)) has proven it again. He’s doing everything right atm. Defense against Wade at the end of the third, anyone?

I can def see why Pop is pissed, but he really doesn’t need to be. Gasol or not, and actually whether it be the Lakers or some other promising team, no one’s taking down the Spurs. They are boring as f*ck and as much as everyone nostalgically tries to envision a Celtics-Lakers finals, y’all know the Spurs are going to be there. So take a chill pill, Pops - yeah the trade made no sense, someone should be shot, but your squad need not worry.

Spurs are a great team, but age and injury are catching up with them. Sure they will be a tough to eliminate, but remember they have yet to reach consecutive Conference Finals. These are things to consider when evaluating their repeat chances. Of course Popovich is not excited about a young team that can now throw two 7-footers at Duncan. Oberto/Elson/Horry. I think the Spurs could use another big guy to bang and give fouls (ala Nesterovic/Mohammed) right about now.
