Jason Kidd Officially Wants Out of New Jersey
As much fun as it is to speculate about where a guy might end up when his name starts appearing in the rumor pages, it’s even more fun when said player comes out and admits that he’d welcome a trade.
After initially denying the story, as has become his custom over the last couple of years, Kidd relented yesterday afternoon and admitted that he’s asked his agent to work out an exit plan.
“I’m not mad at anybody,” he said Monday afternoon by phone. “Sometimes, when you ride a wave, you get to the end and that’s all there is. That’s where we are.”
“It used to be if I got a triple-double, that was an automatic win,” he said. “That’s just not the case now. We tried to make this work. We’ve found out it doesn’t. It’s time for us all to move on.”
The reality of the matter is that Kidd didn’t have much of a choice but to come out and admit that he wants out of Jersey. Everyone knew the Nets wouldn’t give him up so easily, but now with the point guard’s desire to leave made public and the wheels having completely fallen off the Nets’ wagon, Rod Thorn almost has to do something before the trade deadline.

What do you think of the proposed Dallas deal, Marcel?
Jan.29 at 10:22 am
data187 says:
kidd to either denver or dallas would make either team much, much better. dallas has zero toughness and kidd will help in that department. kidd will improve denver’s offense and defense which will help denver make the jump to the 2nd round. with kidd, melo, ai, and marcus, there is no reason denver can’t win a championship.

The Nets are looking for a young center. While Diop isn’t really great, he’s about the best the team can get. They might as well take a long, hard look at that Dallas offer…maybe try to pull a couple more draft picks from them too.

This is a sad, sad day.

@Gerard - Why so? I think everyone wants Kidd to have some success in his career.

Russ Bengtson says:
It used to be when he got a triple-double, he wouldn’t shoot 3-12 with four turnovers.
Jan.29 at 10:31 am
Russ Bengtson says:
And Kidd HAD some success in his career. Or was that someone else that made the Finals twice? That’s as many appearances as Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon and John Stockton made, and one more than Charles Barkley. It’s not like being a good player guarantees you championships and 72 virgins.

Keith says:
How many virgins does being a bad player guarantee you? Kwame wants to know…

Winning is not a birthright for great players. And it’s not like the Neys don’t have talent. Not to mention they’re in a terrible conference. I respect Jason Kidd very much for what he does on the court, but I don’t respect him at all for this. Seems to me that a big part of the Nets problem is lack of effort and lack of cohesion. Shouldn’t Kidd be largely responsible, as the point guard and elder, for coordinating those?

Kiss is making $19.5 dollars this year. If he’s going to the Dallas, it would take at least 3 players. It would take Jason Terry, Stackhouse and Devin Harris just to match Kidd’s salary.

Jan.29 at 11:08 am
Russ Bengtson says:
Also, shouldn’t a lot of this be on Rod Thorn? Shouldn’t he have maybe, I don’t know, NOT signed Carter to a massive, untradeable extension if he knew Kidd wasn’t happy with the makeup of the team? It’s not like Carter was going to all of a sudden transform into somebody else.

Kidd to Dallas would work. Them Mavs need Kidd’s leadership and defense that would take them to the next level. A Big 3 of Dirk, Josh and Kidd would be a perfect fit, I think.

It’s unbelievable that Kidd and VC couldn’t get themselves out of this mess. Maybe this will make Vince aggressive and start attacking teams again.
Jan.29 at 11:27 am
Rasheedionics says:
Russ, how does it work? Shouldn’t salaries match or be close to each other? Kidd, Collins and Boki Snacks = $28 million
Harris, Dampier and Stackhouse = $20 million
Jan.29 at 11:28 am
Rasheedionics says:
Another question, what Nets were thinking when they re-sign Vince to that huge contract over the summer. Shouldn’t they be thinking rebuilding at that point. I just don’t understand what their plan is.
Jan.29 at 11:30 am
mutoni says:
@ paps: that’s the kind of dangerous thinking that got rod thorn to give vince that insane extension. he is who we thought, always knew, he is.

Daniel says:
Muahahaha I’ve been waiting for this day to come. As a raptor fan i want nothing good for vince carter if kidd leaves then it’ll be 2004 all over again. Just watch, his numbers will slump as his attitude gets worse. As for Kidd I love the ageless wonder. I could see Big Z coming over from Cleavland along with odds and ends to make salaries match.
Jan.29 at 11:35 am
Russ Bengtson says:
Sheed: Devin Harris has a “poison pill” contract, where his trade value is closer to the average of his yearly contract starting NEXT season. Try it on the trade machine.
Jan.29 at 11:39 am
Keith says:
Toronto rookies are cursed. I present to you: t- Damon Stoudemire…Marijuana history. Currently sitting around on the Grizzlies squad.
- Tracy McGrady…injury prone and never gotten out he first round.
- Vince Carter (based on the Raps were the first team he played for)…human highlight reel turned into a jumpshooter. Universally hated. I could go on with spurious claims but with the exception of maybe Camby, Bosh and Bargnani, the rest of their draft picks have never succeeded.
Jan.29 at 11:41 am
Russ Bengtson says:
Although actually, I had Boki Snacks in a different deal–it was Darrell Armstrong in this one. My bad. The poison pill thing still applies, though.

Slick Nick Da Ruler says:
Does Dallas still have Van Horn’s $9 mil contract? If so, it expires this year and will provide financial flexibility for the Nets. It also means Dallas won’t be gutted to acquire Kidd

J-Kidd is quitting on his team, nice. Thorn doesn’t have to do anything. Kidd can stew in his own sweat if he wants to.
Jan.29 at 12:17 pm
ericmontross says:
I don’t see how Kidd would make Dallas that much better. He isn’t a great shooter, and he’s not a great on the ball defender at the point which was kind of the problem last year in the playoffs. He can’t stay with Davis, Parker, Paul, Nash which are all potential match ups in the playoffs. Plus they would give up too much for him.
Jan.29 at 12:25 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
Kidd to Phoenix for Nash and Diaw. Suns shed salary (and years–Diaw’s contract is obnoxious), and Kidd is a better defender than Nash. Healthier, too. Besides, it’s not like the Suns have won a championship (or even reached the Finals) yet.

here’s a deal that works:
kidd for josh howard, dampier and some dude name fazekas as cap filler.
this probably doesn’t work out as well for dallas than Russ’ stack/devin/damp trade because dallas will now have a log jam at the point, but i think nets need an all star caliber player in return for kidd. he deserves at least that much.

Dark says:
Hell I think Denver would be better if they replaced AI with Kidd - imagine what he could do with finishers like KMart (reunion) and Camby underneath, Kleiza and Melo on the perimeter making cuts when they can. Kidd made KMart’s career before, and he can bring everybody on that team to the next level. And Melo could take sole crunch time responsibility.

But my first choice would be Eddy Curry for Kidd (not going to happen). Regardless, Eddy must go, immediately.

Timmyd says:
Iverson is a SG not the PG on the Nuggets. So if you trade Iverson, is Kidd going to make up the points that Iverson, Denvers leading scorer, is giving? No. So you’re basically back at square one. Kidd is about to be 35 yrs old., he’s like 3 years older then AI, and unlike Iverson is not getting better with age. If the Nuggets can get Kidd without giving up any of their Key players then fine, but he’s not worth any of their bigs (Camby, Nene or Martin) or any of their big names (Iverson or Melo), trading any of them for him would just defeat the purpose.
Jan.30 at 3:04 am
Strider says:
Dont the warriors still have the trade exception from the Jason Richardson deal? Plus throw in Brenden Write and Ellis + spare parts
Jan.30 at 4:52 am
Dark says:
Sorry, I meant trading AI for Kidd, not “replace”. No he doesn’t replace AIs scoring, but Denver’s run & gun style just means Kidd would be running the show making sure the other guys pick up the slack. The guy is right now averaging 10apg in a half court offense with less than stellar teammate play. Camby’s 9ppg would gup guaranteed. But true, I didn’t realize AI was 3 years younger - point taken. Definitely not a great idea long term.

SLAM ONLINE | » LeBron’s Order: One Jason Kidd and a Side of Fries says:
[…] With a potentially available Jason Kidd, however, LeBron is being pretty damn direct about what he wants. James wants Kidd on the Cavs. Point blank. End of story: “I would love to have a guy like Jason Kidd to be a part of this franchise, I think it makes us that much better of a team. Everyone knows how much I love Jason Kidd just throughout the summertime. It’s not hard to see how much I’d love to have him as part of the team. Honestly, when you see Jason Kidd wants to be traded, you shouldn’t have to go to the front office and tell them to get on it. It’s Jason Kidd.” […]
