The Knicks

by Marcel Mutoni

Honestly, I’ve run out of things to say and write about this team. But, they continue to make news (for all the wrong reasons of course), so I must address them. Here’s the latest from Gotham’s lovable losers:

-Malik Rose has seen enough: Rose has asked Isiah to keep him on the chilling list and see if he can’t be traded away.

-Jamal Crawford is Captain Obvious: Jamal told us what we already knew, namely, that the Knicks don’t play hard every night.

-Zeke is bullet-proof: This is the kicker. Despite everything that’s happened over the last couple of years, and another humiliating home loss (the hapless Sixers destroyed New York by 28 at MSG on Saturday night), Isiah Thomas was told that his job is safe.

By now, it’s clear that regardless of what happens on the court, as long as the Knicks keep making money, Isiah could probably walk up to James Dolan, slap him across the face, and he would probably be rewarded with a raise.

Sam Rubenstein says:
Great title! I read some of Isiah’s latest round of excuses. If I had to compare him to any other coach I can think of, it would be… RICHIE KOTITE!

Dec.10 at 1:05 pm

Bryan says:
You know it’s bad when Malik Rose is making trade demands.

Captain America says:
Gawd, I hate it when historic franchises go so bad.

white hot eboy says:
Mutoni, for clarifacation sakes, there is only one Captain Obvious, and it is SLAMOnline commentor extrodinaire, H to the Izzo.

Dec.10 at 1:18 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m trying to come up with things that Isiah could do that would get him fired, and I honestly can’t think of any.

Dec.10 at 1:20 pm

white hot eboy says:
Russ, hasn’t he already done some of the worst things that would get you fired from 99.9% of the employers in America?

Dec.10 at 1:21 pm

neaorin says:
He could always try to get Larry Brown back to coach the team.

Dec.10 at 1:24 pm

Co Co says:
I root for Isiah because I was in love with him as a little girl. I think he’s doing a fantastic job. Keep it up Zeke!

Dec.10 at 1:25 pm

H to the izzo says:
No,seriously, what will it take for Isiah to be fired?I’ll let him stab me if it means he finally gets what he deserves…..to be unemployed and basking in past glory

white hot eboy says:
Co Co is silly.

Dec.10 at 1:26 pm

Chris O says:
The guy really is untouchable. Maybe Dolan is entertained by how wild/sh*tty it gets with Zeke. Maybe they go out drinking together and they take turns holding each others’ feet doing keg stands.

Dec.10 at 1:28 pm

Co Co says:
EBOY, I’m so for real. I really do root for the Zeke. I love that devilish grin!

Dec.10 at 1:31 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
by the way they also lost back to back blowout losses to Philly. That might be worse than the Celtics loss. For the millionth time: IT CAN’T GET ANY WORSE.
You know it will though. But how?

Dec.10 at 1:31 pm

white hot eboy says:
Yeah, fuc*ing right, Co Co!!!!!! What do you take me for, a Heat fan? Hahahahahahahahahah!!!

Dec.10 at 1:36 pm

Co Co says:
Ya’ll are just days away from getting back to your winning ways EBOY. Just hold on!

Dec.10 at 1:41 pm

Jukai says:
Zeke must have so much s**t on Dolan. He must have enough trash to keep Dolan in prison for the rest of his natural life. That’s the only thing I can think of. I was laughing at the first two articles then I got to the third and felt like crying. Isn’t it a bad sign that OTHER arenas are now shouting “FIRE I-SI-AH!” These teams are getting freebes by playing the Knicks and their fans are saying “man, this is just unfair… they really should get a new coach!”

Dec.10 at 1:42 pm

white hot eboy says:
I really haven’t been losing my mind about it, like certain female counteparts that USED to be down with cause from bad to the good. They’ll get it right in about a month once they have a deal made (it’s happening SOON). I’m still not hurt.

Dec.10 at 1:44 pm

Co Co says:
Who are they going to trade for and who the hell are their valuable parts?

Dec.10 at 1:47 pm

neaorin says:
LOL @ the James Dolan Wikipedia article: ……. “There is a strong desire by many Knicks fans for Dolan to sell the team. Dolan’s ownership of MSG has been a complete debacle. An important factor to take into consideration is the fact that Dolan has no sports knowledge. He knows nothing about wins or losses but only about dollars and cents. He refuses to give up control of the team to a competent manager or team president. This kind of stubbonness will keep both teams that play at MSG in mediocrity. Fans chanted “Fire Dolan” during the 2003 NBA Draft, and during a December 2006 game against the Washington Wizards. It is widely agreed upon, amongst fans, the media and the NBA, that his tenure has been a complete failure and his inability to manage the Knicks would be comical if it were not so pathetic. Dolan frequently sits at Knicks games with a snarling look on his face, arms folded across his fat disgusting belly. He has gone so far as removing fans from Madison Square Garden who boo him during Knicks games.”………… OK, which one of you guys put that in, time to ‘fess up.

Dec.10 at 1:47 pm

white hot eboy says:
Dre Miller or Bibby. Cavs will get the other one, more than likely. Eboy’s expiring deal is the big chip with other pieces. Pietrus is still on the radar, and Maggette. Riley and Pfund have been working since last week and have to wait for Dec. 15th to pass so they can put in play contract of Parker.

Dec.10 at 1:48 pm

neaorin says:
“Most recently, rumors float that he is trying to trade Zach Randolph and David Lee to the Celtics in exchange for an artist to commission a gigantic banner of him molesting children to be hung under the MSG scoreboard.”

Dec.10 at 1:49 pm

white hot eboy says:
neaorin, no fu*ks in the paragraph, so that excludes commentor and Knicks fan, Bryan/Shia.

Dec.10 at 1:49 pm

Co Co says:
Oh, okay.

Dec.10 at 1:50 pm

Jukai says:
hahahahahahahahahahahaha oh god, Wikipedia

Dec.10 at 1:52 pm

Jukai says:
“Dolan frequently sits at Knicks games with a snarling look on his face, arms folded across his fat disgusting belly. He has gone so far as removing fans from Madison Square Garden who boo him during Knicks games.”
I hope that stays, oh lord I hope that stays. Can someone cite that with a proper picture?

Dec.10 at 1:53 pm

Jukai says:
“Dolan performs blues-inspired rock as the singer for JD and the Straight Shot, which no one cares about.”

Dec.10 at 1:55 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Malik Rose isn’t a bad player - did some nice things when he was on the Spurs. I bet there are some teams out there who can use him (Cavs, Celtics?)

Dec.10 at 2:11 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
There seriously needs to be a FIRE DOLAN chant. I’ll be there tonight for the inevitable closer-than-it-should-be game against the Mavs that gives everyone false hope again. Heck, the Knicks could even win.

Dec.10 at 2:13 pm

Co Co says:
Tell Zeke I said hey Russ.

Dec.10 at 2:13 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Fire Dolan…. why don’t those 18.000 in MSG think of that?

Dec.10 at 2:17 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m not going anywhere near Zeke, Co Co. I can barely watch that grin on TV without wanting to throw something at it. If I went to the post-game press conference I’d probably wind up in jail.

Dec.10 at 2:17 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Oh well, at least I still respect Malik and Jamal. And Q. And Nate. Gets shaky after those dudes.

Dec.10 at 2:18 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And David Lee.

Dec.10 at 2:20 pm

Co Co says:
Don’t be like that Russ, I heart him! Listen guys, its not all the Coach’s fault when the team sucks. What’s that old phrase? You can lead a horse or cow to water, but you can’t make him drink?????????? Okay, I don’t know, but something like that applies to these Knicks.

Dec.10 at 2:22 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
You’re right, it’s the GMs fault for assembling this Frankenstein’s monster of a roster. They should probably fire that guy instead.

Dec.10 at 2:24 pm

Co Co says:
Russ, the roster isn’t that bad.

Dec.10 at 2:28 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Apparently it is! Look, great GMs assemble rosters that work well together. And great coaches are able to get those players to play to the best of their ability. Isiah Thomas has shown no signs that he can do either. He’s had how many years? And all he’s done is take on other team’s problems, declaring each and every one to be a key piece to what he’s trying to accomplish. And where has he gotten?

Dec.10 at 2:31 pm

Co Co says:
They don’t play well together, but there’s still talent there. I’m going to tell you Isiah’s plan. He wants the team to sink to a new low this season, then he’s going to lead them to a championship next year. If you guys can’t see that, then you just aren’t paying attention.

Dec.10 at 2:32 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
In ‘02-03 (Layden’s last full season) they finished 37-45. Will they finish with a better record than that this year? Is there less turmoil now? I just think they’ve made ZERO real progress over the last four seasons.

Dec.10 at 2:33 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
If they win a championship next season, I’ll eat my laptop.

Dec.10 at 2:34 pm

Co Co says:
hahahahahaa! Mark it down Russ.

Dec.10 at 2:34 pm

Co Co says:
Russ, you normally save this type of venom for the Bulls.

Dec.10 at 2:36 pm

Bryant Reeves says:
At least he’s had some good drafts… Maybe he’ll get rehired as a scout somewhere

Dec.10 at 2:38 pm

Jared says:
hahaha…you’re right, they haven’t made any progress. They got rid of crappy players with crappy contracts, and picked up pretend not-crappy players with even worse contracts. Not to mention the ones isiahs given…its like every year he needs to take on a new awful player who serves no purpose to the team, Jared Jeffries, Fred Jones. I watch them and wonder when will he swallow his pride, cause we know he’s not getting fired, and put his ‘boys’ on the bench or even trade them. Clearly he has ties to his old teams, neighborhoods, and college…but let’s be real, these guys suck. They’re horrible together, and they HATE playing for him. They have visibly given up, and it’s not even half way through december for goodness sake.

Dec.10 at 2:39 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
You know how many Knicks games I’ve been to and watched on TV over the past couple of years? It gets old after a while. I’m tired of watching everyone drink the Isiah Kool-Aid night after night, trade after trade, signing after signing. Every acquisition is a coup, every uninspired blowout is just a bump in the road. How long are we supposed to believe that this rambling journey to nowhere has a destination?

Dec.10 at 2:42 pm

Co Co says:
I think 9 years. That’s about where we are in Atlanta.

Dec.10 at 2:42 pm

Jared says:
it doesnt! the destination is isiah on the unemployment line and another GM in Dolans shadow. Daddy has to take the team away from his incompetent son and they need to realize that this team is more than a business, it really is the heartbeat of a city (that’s a bit much but NY Basketball deserves a whole lot better than this)

Dec.10 at 2:45 pm

Co Co says:
It’s hard to motivate an owner or GM to really make the team a contender when they are still making so much money even though they suck. What’s your motivation to do the right thing if the fans are going to show up anyway?? Work smart, not hard.

Dec.10 at 2:46 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Atlanta and New York are so amazingly different it’s not even funny. Atlanta pays attention to the salary cap and can’t draw a crowd even in a brand-new building. The Knicks don’t care what they spend, should be a HUGE free agent destination, and have one of the most intensely loyal fan bases in all of sports (even if it is because of corporate ticketholders and spotlight-sucking pseudo-celebs). Isiah and Dolan are both incompetent and seemingly proud of it. It’s disgusting.

Dec.10 at 2:51 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Reasoning like that is EXACTLY why Eddy Curry doesn’t care about rebounding or playing defense, and his play is a perfect reflection of Isiah’s coaching and Dolan’s management. In that sense, this is EXACTLY the team they deserve–a bunch of guys with huge senses of entitlement who believe their own hype. I can think of a bunch of players in this League who improve constantly regardless of money–KG, AI, Kobe, LeBron. It’s called a sense of pride, which hardly anyone on the Knicks seem to have.

Dec.10 at 2:51 pm

Cheryl says:
Hey, u talking ’bout me, Eboy?? I ain’t down on my boys, I keep telling you. Just realistic. No blinders here. They’re just REALLY hard to watch these days. And, they’ll go farther next year than this. That’s all.

Dec.10 at 2:52 pm

Jared says:
How do you have a rotation with crawford, fred jones, jeffries, z-bo and balkman? Jared Jeffries was bringing the ball up! Jared Jeffries! They turned the ball over I think 3 consecutive possessions, at least. Steph has been down, but at least throw nate in there, or sh!t even mardy f*ckin collins…anyone that has the slightest handle. Yea JC dribbles like he’s got his hand stuck in the freestyle button, he turns the ball over probably at least once every 3 touches…that’s efficiency. I don’t even wanna watch anymore.

Dec.10 at 2:53 pm

Jared says:
Russ: Lee, Nate, Balkman…those are your guys

Dec.10 at 2:54 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I love that Nate was on the chillin’ list for something like five straight games–including the Phoenix game when they needed a shot of adrenaline and energy more than anything–then he comes off the bench against Philly and pours in 25. In a blowout loss, of course, but still.

Dec.10 at 2:56 pm

Co Co says:
Russ, its sad, but that’s what the league has sorta turned into.

Dec.10 at 3:00 pm

Jared says:
CoCo’s right…it’s not just the knicks…but in the basketball mecca? it’s just not right. And as much as I dislike nate for being nothing more than a fireball - he’s inconsistent, makes awful decisions, and has no self control - he should be playing 25 + minutes for this team. This team’s strength is it’s energy, so nate, jc, lee, balkman, and even zbo…that should be our primary lineup (that’s a sh!tty lineup)

Dec.10 at 3:04 pm

Co Co says:
I think most fans need to realize that every team is not trying to win a championship. They might say they’re trying, hell they might even make a trade or two that doesn’t hurt or help the team to make you think they’re trying, but trust me they aren’t. Loyal fans are the main reason why they can get away with this ish. Most owners know that no matter how crappy their team is, they are going to have those die hard fans who continue to support them. Until the fans show them how disgusted they really are with the product and stop showing up, they can’t expect anything more than what they are getting.

Dec.10 at 3:12 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I beg to entirely disagree, but I don’t even want to talk about it anymore. I’m getting too upset.

Dec.10 at 3:13 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Do you know how frustrating it is knowing that I get more upset about the way the Knicks have been playing than the Knicks themselves do–and I’m not even a fan? It’s absolutely disgusting.

Dec.10 at 3:23 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
OK, one more thing (haha). Other teams–good teams–have at least one player that commands respect. One player that goes all out all the time, and is either going to chew you out if you don’t (or just make you look bad). The Magic have Dwight, the Cavs have LeBron, the Celtics have KG, the Spurs have Duncan, Manu AND Parker. Who do the Knicks have like that? Nobody, that’s who. The player they have that DESERVES the most respect is Malik Rose–not only does he have a ring, but he’s probably the guy who gets the most from his ability–and he just wants out. What does that say about the atmosphere? You have to WANT to win, and I don’t think anyone there really gives a f*ck. From the top on down. It’s all an illusion, and a crappy one at that.

Dec.10 at 3:25 pm

H to the izzo says:
CoCo:A vast majority of loyal fans aren’t even at the games.Every team obviously aren’t trying to win a championship because it’s unrealistic but all(with the obvious exception of the Knicks) are trying to work towards a championship.Remember I’m talking about the team here, not the owners

Dec.10 at 3:36 pm

Co Co says:
I’m talking about the owners Izzo and some of the players as well. Everyone doesn’t have the win at all costs mentality. Some people just happen to have been good enough to make it to the league and are content to cash those checks. calm down Russ

Dec.10 at 3:40 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m calm. I’m just saying you can’t build an entire TEAM out of those guys and expect to succeed–which is exactly what Isiah’s done. With Dolan’s blessing, of course. Could you imagine Popovich coaching this bunch? He’d quit in a month.

Dec.10 at 3:44 pm

H to the izzo says:
The owners, during the season are irrelevant unless they’re involved in some sort of scandal. We’re talking about teams here also, not just individuals. The guys who are coasting on their talent aren’t successful and/or relevant in the NBA and are very rarely the main player on the team.My point being, every TEAM does have aspirations of winning a championship but granted more and more players seem content with the money alone

Dec.10 at 3:56 pm

dez says:
Russ, I’m with you.
I can’t keep normal blood pressure while talking about the Knicks. I’ve learned to just avoid the whole issue. Its not worth the medical bills

Dec.10 at 5:14 pm

Allenp says:
Russ, you think everybody’s drinking the Isiah Kool-Aid. Can you define everybody for me because from what I’ve seen on television and in print, we must be operating from a different definition.

Dec.10 at 5:48 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Everybody who makes the difference whether he keeps his job or not. Those are the only people that matter anyway. In the grand scheme of things.

Dec.10 at 6:26 pm

illydiva says:
I, for one, enjoyed both those games…even though my Sixers are horrid and unwatchable and no one goes to the Wac to see them…at least we (the fans) still respect the coach. Oh and David Lee didn’t have to try to hurt little Lou. It wasn’t like we’re some team winning every game, running up the score…or jacking up shots and stealing dunk contest titles.

Dec.10 at 6:44 pm

Clendon says:
Dolen Reminds me of that fat alien from space jam.. but he has the team of looney tunes instead of monstars..
Ohh and nate is tweety haha

Dec.10 at 7:45 pm

Mayor Adam West says:
“My players daily hear a lot of negative comments about them,” Thomas said. “My job is to keep them motivated and feeling good about themselves. I’ve been hard on them before. It’s not the time to be hard. There was a suggestion three weeks ago I was too hard on my players for benching (Stephon) Marbury. So this is not the time to KICK THE DOG, so to speak.” ………………..lang,?

Dec.11 at 12:57 am

Russ Bengtson says:
I didn’t think D Lee was trying to hurt Lou either, but that was still a scary foul. Lou’s my favorite Sixer by far, too.

Dec.11 at 1:02 am

Gumdrop says:
My theory is that Dolan thinks he should fire Isaiah, but he wants to wait until it’s on his terms and no one is telling him to do so. Just like him wanting to take the sexual harrassment case to trial. The problem is massive arrogance, that won’t allow any opinions past his own. Between himself and Hank Steinbrenner, New York sports fans are going to be caused a lot more pain in the near future.

Dec.11 at 1:02 am

Gumdrop says:
Hey Russ, nice to see you up at this hour.

Dec.11 at 10:45 am

Jared says:
thats pretty funny clendon…and gumdrop, don’t bring the yankees into this, they’re nowhere near the knicks level. At least Hank wants to do whats best for the teams success. He’s not spending lots of money on mid-level talent.

Dec.11 at 5:40 pm

vtrobot says:
No one in life is near the Knicks current level. As diehard as anyone is, I don’t see how you could contribute money to this current franchise and help make them the highest grossing team. No one in NY should go to anymore games. Why is n’t there a bigger/better boycott? Oak wouldn’t allow teammates to half-a** it like everyone currently does every night. I am truly sickened and saddened.
