My Best Of 2007 List

Applause Is Not Necessary.

By Khalid Salaam

I’ve always made “Best of” lists. For years really but its always been in my mind or I would talk (argue) about why I though so and so had the best album, movie, dunk, etc of the year. This year i’ve decided to share.

Album of the Year—Back To Black, Amy Winehouse. I was unfamiliar with her work prior to this year so when I first heard the album I was sorta annoyed at myself for not staying more in the loop. I realize that a lotta people allow her personal problems to cloud their opinions of her but I just focus on the music. When listened to in its entirely it’s both haunting and exhilarating in how she views her world and explains her part in it. The album is unapologetically rebellious at times but never corny or annoying like most of the so-called “angry” singers. And the writing is superb. Without music the songs still resonate. —rounding out my top 5 are Graduation, Finding Forever, Desire (Pharoahe Monch) and As I Am

Game of the Year- Tie
It’s between that double OT game in March when the Suns and Mavs were going all out or either Warriors vs Mavs in Game 4 of the 1st rd playoff series. Pretty much as good as it gets

Song of the Year —Tie
Its always tough picking songs but Winehouse doubles up here with “Tears Dry On Their Own” and Rich Boy’s “Get This Paper” stayed in heavy, heavy rotation.

Tears Dry On Their Own—
All I can ever be to you,
Is a darkness that we knew,
And this regret I had to get accustomed to,
Once it was so right,
When we were at our high,
Waiting for you in the hotel at night,
I knew I hadn’t met my match,
But every moment we could snatch,
I don’t know why I got so attached,
It’s my responsibility,
And you don’t owe nothing to me,
But to walk away I have no capacity

Get This Paper—
They shippin’ them boys off, they fighting’ in Iraq
It’s soldiers in that war that ain’t never gon’ make it back
N—–this the battlefield, fake n—-scream keep it real
Yeah yeah, rob, steal, anything to pay them bills
Hey times harder, so we grind harder
We takin’ chances wit’ that coke comin’ ‘cross that water
Tryin’ to make it out this ghetto life ain’t gotta be this way
Them pigs they came and kicked my mama door in yesterday
I prayed a thousand nights, I did a hundred crimes
And now I’m beggin’ Lord that you don’t let me down this time
Money my motivator, my mouth my money maker
No I don’t see them haters, so let’s go get this paper

The context of the song isn’t about drug selling so please don’t judge it like it is. Its about survival and people out there who know what its like to pull yourself up and better yourself surely feel this joint. Plus this song has the best ad-libs I’ve ever heard. No joke.

Performance of the Year—Bron, game 5, East Conference Finals. Enough said

TV Show (Comedy). 30 Rock. Actually brilliant

Play of the Year—The Tyrus Thomas play against the Hornets in the spring where be blocks the shot on one end and then dunks on the other. Dope.

TV Show (Drama)—Lost (hope the writers strike doesn’t mess up this season, although as a fellow writer i can’t be mad. Get that money…)

Sneaker of the Year—Jordan Spi’zike. Best of both worlds manifested.

Movie—Bourne Ultimatum. Intelligence, plausibility and action. What else is there?

Coach of the Year—Billy Donovan, University of Florida

Book of the Year—Kareem Abdul Jabbar. “On The Shoulders Of Giants: My Journey Through the Harlem Renaissance.
If you’re into American history, this is a must have.

President Bush F-up— On October 17 Bush spoke to a news conference “We’ve got a leader in Iran who has announced that he wants to destroy Israel.
So I’ve told people that, if you’re interested in avoiding World War 111, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon.”

I don’t blame Bush. I blame the people who voted for him and who still support him. What the hell is wrong with you?

Music verse of the year—Andre 300, “International Players Anthem”. I’ve said it before but it bears repeating. If Dre 3G isn’t in your top ten for all time and for today, your top ten doesn’t matter on any level.

Politician of the Year—Barack Obama. No not because of the reason you think it is (damn you got issues) its because he’s been able to sustain momentum and even increase it. He’s been masterful in the way he’s running this campaign (watch Huckabee in ’08. Here we go again…)

Sexiest woman—Kerry Washington in “ I Think I Love My Wife”
Not much of a movie but wow Kerry. Wow.

News headline of the Year—–Lisa Nowak. The astronaut who got caught up in the love triangle who was so motivated that she wore a diaper to cut down on travel time. Remember her? She is no joke. The guy must be a pimp though…

Funniest moment—Curb your Enthusiasm. The whole Leon and Larry “Get in that ass” moment.
I’m laughing just thinking about it.

Best Documentary–The War. This is Ken Burns at his absolute best. Probably the best addition to pop culture we had this year. But its not for the weak of heart. Graphic, scary and serious.

Amy Winehouses album was almost all samples though. Lyrically she’s deep, and i think she’s soulful as hell, but originality goes a long way in my book. And Desire’s a good album but not top 5 of the year.

Myles Brown says:
“You got to get all up in there! Spray paint your name ‘Larry was here’. Leave some snickers wrappers n sh*t. And then don’t even close it on the way out. Just leave it open. That’s how you do!” This probably was my favorite season of Curb.

Best Movie… “Talk to me”!

TADOne says:
Good list Khalid. I will agree with you on Amy Whinehouse. It is too bad she is messing up all that talent with drugs. Sexiest woman for me is a tie between Lauren London and Meagan Good.

Dec.20 at 3:03 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
Perfect list. I’m with you on 4 of your 5 albums. I’m not familiar with Desire (I’m kind of scared to admit that!). The Kareem book is waiting for me under the Christmas tree and the only way I can handle waiting is by drowning in Miracle of St. Anthony right now. Game of the year: the Suns/Mavs game was great basketball and the entire Golden State/Dallas series was amazing to me. Tears dry on their own haunts me every time I hear it. But, in a good way. And Ms. Alicia’s newest is now firmly on repeat. It took a few run through’s, but now I love it from beginning to end. Kerry Washington is stunning, but Jada Pinkett Smith at the “I am Legend” premiere made me so damn jealous. She’s got that whole fit and gorgeous thing down to perfection. Great list, Khalid. I know you didn’t ask for mine, but I am a list person too, so I couldn’t resist. Amy Winehouse and her personal life creeps me out, but girl’s voice is amazing and gives me chills. I’m interested to see what the Grammy people are willing to give her.

The Spiz’ike? Are you f-cking kidding me? All of those have looked like Spike puked on a f-cked up hybrid pair of 3’s and 6’s.

Jada Pinkett is a classic.

Dec.20 at 3:11 pm

I am not kidding you, stop hating.

Jake Appleman says:
Co-sign on Desire as underrated and possibly top 5 this year, Kerry Washington and Leon and Larry.

Dec.20 at 3:17 pm

jbn74sb says:
No hate towards you, Khalid. Just not a fan of the hype surrounding the shoe game these days, particularly for shoes that are just horrendous.

Not familiar with desire?! Good one Holly.

Dec.20 at 3:35 pm

H to the izzo says:
My headline of the year was the in the NY Post after Ike Turners death,it read:”Ike “beats” Tina to death”.Yes I am a horrible person.

Dec.20 at 3:37 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
AHAHAAHAH ohh wow that so was not what I meant. My ( )’s just makes it sound worse. aahahh Fortunately, that was only a very bad choice of wording.

Dec.20 at 3:39 pm

H to the izzo says:
And “Love is losing game” is the best from “Back to Black”,but it’s been a while since I listened to it.

Dec.20 at 3:43 pm

The Cool says:
Andre 3000 is one of the dopest rapper’s I have ever heard in my entire life. The way he effortlessly flows his rhymes and makes them fuse into his own world, it is simply amazing. Andre is in my top five ahead of Ludacris, Fabolous, and Kanye West. But no one right now is ahead of Lil wayne and that’s the truth. play wit it.

Dec.20 at 3:44 pm

TADOne says:
NY Post always has the best headlines. I’m sure Lang has a few more good ones. And Holly, I figured you mispoke.

Dec.20 at 3:45 pm

H to the izzo says:
I’m sorry DP,but I just can’t accept people calling Weezy the best rapper,I like my raps to occasionaly make sense

Dec.20 at 3:46 pm

TADOne says:
Um, if Fabolous is in your top 5, your list needs work.

Dec.20 at 3:56 pm

The Cool says:
Izzo, how can you say that Weezy’s raps don’t make sense? I know some time the guy records his raps while he is high as cloud 9 but if you take time to listen to his music, it actually makes sense. TADOne, F-a-b-o-l-o-u-s is freakin cold man so I don’t know what you’re on. If you have a better top five than please tell me. play wit it.

Dec.20 at 3:59 pm

H to the izzo says:
DP:Do you want a list of 100 rappers better than Weezy, because I can do that.

Dec.20 at 4:06 pm

The Cool says:
YES,IZZO PLEASE TELL ME 100 BUSTERS THAT YOU BELIEVE CAN TAKE WEEZY BECAUSE I KNOW YOU ARE BLUFFING. PLAY WIT IT.

Dec.20 at 4:07 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
Lets not have a is Lil Wayne talented or not argument. Everybody has different tastes. Some dudes wear v-neck t-shirts that show off peezy chest hair. I don’t judge. At least not after lunch

Dec.20 at 4:13 pm

The Cool says:
Khalid, you know that Wayne is talented though. Am I right or wrong? play wit it.

Dec.20 at 4:15 pm

TADOne says:
D.P.- are we talking about all time? Or just 5 better right now? I can go either way.

Dec.20 at 4:20 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
yeah Wayne is talented. He’s real good on the funny punchlines and whatnot. But his songs don’t usually do much for me. he doesn’t have topics. it would be like if Slam articles had dope pics and a amazing headline but now words. It would look nice and we would disuss what great pics we have and then thats it. It would get boring in large amounts. Thats Wayne to me. He would be great in a group but when he making solo albums i’m not fan

Dec.20 at 4:21 pm

TADOne says:
Sorry Khalid, I’m partial to real hip hop.

Dec.20 at 4:21 pm

white hot eboy says:
The better question, who are five rappers shorter than Wayne? 1. Bushwick Bill I defy you to name 4 more.

Dec.20 at 4:22 pm

TADOne says:
Oops, meant to say I agree with you, Khalid.

Dec.20 at 4:22 pm

The Cool says:
Nah TADOone, I’m just talking about right now. Wayne isn’t in my top five for all-time but he is in my top 25. I just want the top 5 in the game right now. play wit it.

2) Talib Kweli

Tad, for the shorter than Lil Wayne list.

Dec.20 at 4:37 pm

Dec.20 at 4:42 pm

TADOne says:
We have completely hijacked Khalid’s thread. My bad, homey.

Dec.20 at 4:45 pm

DeMarco says:
All of these “Best Rapper Alive” lists are cute and everything, but if you’re putting one together that doesn’t have Little Brother’s Phonte in it, you’re clueless!

Dec.20 at 4:45 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
True. Can we focus on my list.

Dec.20 at 4:47 pm

H to the izzo says:
Yeah sorry Khalid.Great list,30 Rock is great,Andre3000 is great,Back to Black is great,Bourne Supremacy was great,Obama is servicable.

Dec.20 at 4:47 pm

The Cool says:
Little Brother’s Getback is pretty straight so I give you that one DeMarco. play wit it.

Dec.20 at 4:47 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
Since I am in the process of being snowed in yet again, if I’ve never seen any of the “bourne” movies, what would you suggest as a few to watch, Khalid? Also, how good was Kareem’s book?

Dec.20 at 4:49 pm

The Cool says:
My fault, Khalid. I guess I kind of started all this discussion so that is my mistake. Didn’t mean to steal the thunder out of your post. I started that discussion because I really enjoyed your post. play wit it.

Dec.20 at 4:50 pm

DeMarco says:
My bad with the list hijack, homie… Winehouse’s album is very nice. She, Jilly from Philly and the slept-on Ledisi had the R&B CDs of ‘07 to me.

Dec.20 at 4:50 pm

TADOne says:
Holly, there are only 3. You would want to watch them in order to understand how much better #3 was to the first two, which aren’t bad either.

Dec.20 at 4:52 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
I just might do that, Tadone. I’m not much of a movie person and I can’t even remember the last movie I’ve actually watched, but with the snow falling, I figure I may as well try to catch up with the good ones.

Dec.20 at 4:53 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
Actually, knocked up was the last movie I’ve seen. The Big/Pac part when the guy is freaking out leaving the message on the doctor’s phone had me laughing for days.

Dec.20 at 4:57 pm

TADOne says:
I’ll actually be flying into the snow tomorrow in Detroit, Holly. Which is actually kind of backwards, what with everyone trying to get away from the snow.

Dec.20 at 4:59 pm

Rebba says:
Winehouse revived classic jazz when it was so far down it had been dropped as a category at the MOBOs. Raised on it. Now we’ll see if she can cut the drama queen crap and spare her Mom and Dad the life-threatening stress. (She can’t do squat for herself. Heroin does that, called “blood itch.”)

Dec.20 at 5:01 pm

riggs says:
thats a horrible list….

Dec.20 at 5:02 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
catching any games in Detroit? Are you from there, tadone?

Dec.20 at 5:06 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
Holly the book is very good. It takes the reader on a trip from the origins of not just jazz but all American music and american culture. its really really good.

Dec.20 at 5:11 pm

TADOne says:
I am originally from Detroit, Holly. I’ll actually be catching the Pistons/Grizzlies game on Friday and the Michigan/UCLA game on Saturday. I want to see Kevin Love play. I’ll also be going to the Lions game on Sunday, but we won’t go there.

Dec.20 at 5:11 pm

TADOne says:
Khalid, you got me wanting to read that book now. I think I’ll cop it for the plane ride.

Dec.20 at 6:17 pm

TripleDouble says:
Pharoahe Monch is the man, Desire is a great album and well worthy of a top five list.
Monch has a new video coming out for “Desire”… I made it, so I know, hahaaaaa… check it when it’s out.

Dec.20 at 6:28 pm

Ryan Jones says:
For the record, I was onto Kerry Washington before Khalid was.

Dec.20 at 6:29 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Also, In Rainbows is the best album of the year. I even paid for it.

Dec.20 at 7:32 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
thanks Khalid, can’t wait to tear into it on Christmas morning. I majored in English and History and some of my favorite material was from the Harlem Renaissance. Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Nella Larsen and so many more. It’ll be really cool to get Kareem’s personal opinion on the topics as well as learn some stuff I probably didn’t know or haven’t retained. On another note, I’ve had Frederick Douglass referenced 3 times in the past day. All 3 made me happy.

Dec.20 at 7:39 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
Tadone, enjoy the time home. I would love to go see some college ball. I’ve never seen ncaa, only Canadian hoops. I’m planning a trip to Boston in the next few months to catch a Celtics home swing and some BC games. Hopefully. ahahaaha I have been spending more money on basketball and traveling than I have ever thought possible, but, really what else is there that makes me happier? A handbag? Clothes? Techy stuff? Nope. nothing compares, so I just keep on finding ways to work it into the budget and Im enjoying every second of it. Hope the weather isn’t too bad. Khalid, sorry for the long posts in your thread. I’ve switched from Alicia to Common for the evening and I have you to thank for inspiring the switch up.

Dec.20 at 7:50 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
no problem Holly

Dec.20 at 7:56 pm

Captain America says:
Hey, Khalid, another nice touch. Huck(leberry) will fade to a burp.

Dec.20 at 8:03 pm

Adam Fleischer says:
Nice list. Just wanted to throw in that a) you hit the Kerry Washington call right on and b) Three Stacks is too nice…his verses on Da Art of Storytellin Part 4 off DJ Dramas cd and What a Job off Devin the Dudes album are also too hot for words. Also, didn’t realize Rich Bot actually said anything of worth in his rhymes but apparently he does. Fair enough.

Dec.20 at 8:12 pm

davidR says:
good list khalid. interesting you picked that rich boy cut for song of the year. regardless, it’s a dope song and he did a good job of shooting the video. can we get a producer of the year too? personally i think it’s between will.i.am and pollow da don. those two are the future of mainstream music

Dec.20 at 8:13 pm

davidR says:
adam, in that song rich boy says a lot of good things. unfortunately, thats only if you can understand what the hell he’s saying

Dec.20 at 10:15 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
DavidR i think producer of the year is kanye. dude is on another level. The track to”drivin me wild” is still bangin to me and i’ve heard the song hundred times. As far as rich boy i was surprised too. i just noticed that I never went too long without listening to it and when i would play it it energized me. Dude is so pissed and so focused on getting his point across. I respect the passion.

Dec.20 at 10:54 pm

TADOne says:
Thanks Holly. So where exactly can I find someone who is into ball as much as you? Canada I guess, huh? haha. I must add I went to Toronto last year and loved it. But yeah, you definitely want to catch a college game when you can. You don’t have to worry about effort or hustle with college players.

Dec.21 at 12:24 am

O says:
Khalid is that dude, man. Side note: Months ago my man Matt Barone asked me “Who do you think had the best hip-hop album of the year?” I didn’t have a real answer. Thinking back, the truth is Amy Winehouse had the best hip-hop album of the year. 30 Rock is official tissue, i can’t front. And G-Status, Kha, Kerry’s murda, but have you forgotten Alicia Keys in Smokin’ Aces? Whew! She’s hot business.

Dec.21 at 12:27 am

O says:
Btw, my Most Gangsta and Un-Gangsta Moments of 2007 list is coming Dec. 31st.

Dec.21 at 1:43 am

Ben Osborne says:
Khalid was telling me this article was coming for three weeks…i’m mad it took me til past midnight to read it. I don’t agree with everything K said, but it’s a great comment starter and I definitely echo everything he said about Lil Wayne. I didn’t see enough movies to make a top 5, but I can definitely announce my book of the year: “The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao,” by Junot Diaz. Just outrageously sharp, funny, sad and brilliant. I highly recommend it to anyone between the ages of 17-40, esp if you or someone you love lives in NJ and/or is Latino (O, you of all people should cop this book; can’t wait for your year-end joint, by the way). Lastly, despite what Ryan tried to imply, neither he nor Khalid have ever “been onto” Kerry Washington.

Dec.21 at 2:19 am

Ben Osborne says:
And, while, like Khalid, I loved Back to Black, Finding Forever, As I Am and Graduation, my favorite album of the year—by far—was Kanye’s mixtape, Can’t Tell Me Nothin’—which Konate big upped on this site back in May (http://slamonline.com/online/2007/05/kanye-to-the/). I’m guessing some people will say “mixtapes don’t count,” but that one is SO EFFING GOOD it should count.

Dec.21 at 3:01 am

ethical suicide says:
Put up 100 of the best rappers you can think of, add them together and they’re still less than half of bigg. His prowess, not his size. Although that too. Funniest moment was in Extras where Andy tries to pickup the chick in the water bottle scene. Coolest was Kobe’s 65, most underrated game of the year. In rainbows was hot, Curtis was not. Kanye is that dude, so is Lupe. Journeyman, best show since the wire. Cassie looked hot as hell too. Jenna Fischer from the office. That’s all. Oh, and watch out for Ko’ to drop 70 on some fool before the season ends.

Dec.21 at 4:55 am

TheMC5 says:
Ryan Jones is the man! Radiohead reference! On a basketball site! Awesome. I disagree that In Rainbows was the best album of the year, but it was damn good.

Dec.21 at 11:32 am

Jared says:
I wish I didn’t miss this thread…izzo you put a lot of rappers on that list that are not even close to weezy, even tho khalid hit the nail on the head describing his place in the rap game. Weezy’s coolin off, but he’s entertaining as hell.

Dec.21 at 11:55 am

Khalid Salaam says:
O i’m amped about your list as usual. I didn’t see smokin aces but i’m sure a keys looked amazing.

Dec.21 at 12:28 pm

Ben Osborne says:
Smokin’ Aces was terrible but that was definitely the best I’ve ever seen Alicia look. Wow. Is it a fact she likes dudes though?

Any top five not including Three Stacks is ludicrous. I believe Khalid or someone else said this. That is all.

Allenp says:
Little Wayne is what he is. But what he is is not worse than Jadakiss and Prodigy. And a lot of other people on that long list. Seriously, many of them rap about nothing as well.

Kerry Washington sexiest woman? I know I know, probably a different taste in women, but to call her sexiest woman is saying that Joe Smith is the best power forward in the League. Not bad, but not very good either.

Book: Tommie Smith - Silent Gesture

Dec.26 at 8:29 pm

O says:
How the hell can you compare Kerry Washington to Joe Smith?! That’s not even a metaphor. That’s just blasphemy. If anything, Kerry should be compared to Steve Nash. Got the game on smash, but doesn’t get the respect they’ve earned.
