Jamaal Tinsley Had an Interesting Weekend

by Marcel Mutoni

For the third time in a little over one year, Pacers point guard Jamaal Tinsley was involved in an altercation following a night of clubbing. Tinsley and his friends were shot at around 3:40 AM Sunday morning in Indianapolis; thankfully, no one was killed or seriously injured.

The Pacers, as you might imagine, were less than amused.

“With Jamaal, it’s just ‘Why are you out at 3:30 in a place like that?’ I don’t really have a problem with guys being out till 3:30, but you’ve got to know your surroundings,” Team president Larry Bird said.

“Obviously, it’s time for these guys to take a look at everything that’s happened throughout our league, throughout professional sports, and step back and take a hard look at it and make smarter decisions.”

One gets the feeling that if Bird could institute a team curfew (or better yet, tell his guys which establishments they may frequent), he would jump at the chance.

Joey Qatato, an equipment manager for the Pacers, was shot in both of his elbows.

According to people in Tinsley’s camp, tensions rose after a group of people in the club began harassing Tinsely and his friends about the flashy cars they were driving and the money Jamaal makes.

Though it appears that Jamaal and co. were hardly at fault here, it’s not hard to imagine how this will be received in Hoosier country.

It was interesting to read Mourning’s comments on this whole ordeal. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, but, this violence stuff has got to stop.”You’ve got to understand that we all are vulnerable when it comes to putting ourselves in situations where the public has access to us. And if we go out and flaunt and expose our luxuries, there are some jealous people out there who want it and put us in a position where we’re targets,” Mourning said. “I’m not saying you’ve got to hide it, but don’t be flamboyant. Don’t walk into a club with a crowd of people wearing a $250,000 chain around your neck or pull out a wad of hundreds for everybody to see. Pull out a credit card instead. I mean, you’re asking for attention and you’re asking for trouble.” From the AP game recap. I don’t know if I agree with Mourning or not. I agree with not being obnoxiously forward with your money, but, at the same time, even if you are, it does not justify someone shooting at you out of jealousy. Such a slippery slope. We need a resolution.

Alonzo is right. Plain and simple. You can wear nice sh*t and not be obnoxious. Life isn’t a Bad Boy video.

I hate to think that because you’re rich and famous you have to live a cloistered life, shying away from the activities normal people enjoy. I’m reluctant to pass judgement on someone I don’t know in a situation I know very little about, but rolling at three am with your entourage spread out in three luxury vehicles? After already being involved in two incidents? Jeapordizing a career many of us would sacrifice certain non-basketball-involved body parts to have?
Crazy.
How about his brother apparently taking of after the shooters with his own gun blazing?
Crazier. Stupid, even.

Chris O says:
Tinsley’s a fool. If he’s gotten into sh*t this many times in a year, how’s this guy living on a day to day basis? How many weekends could these things have happened?

Dec.10 at 10:34 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
I second the thankfulness that SJax was far removed from the situation. I wouldn’t even want to imagine the outcome had he been there. I’m so happy he is in GS and I hope he manages to keep himself right.

Russ Bengtson says:
Oh please, Larry Bird used to go out until 3:30 a.m. all the time.

Dec.10 at 10:40 am

Truth About It says:
Plain and simple, no matter who you are, if you have money, you need to be careful. It is really ashame that some of those with money can’t just be content with having the money. No, they need to make themselves feel better by showing others that they got loot. And those who are fugazi…you deserve to be knocked over the head. By all accounts, Sean Taylor did not “floss” his money, but he was still targeted because of his money. Professional athletes are in the limelight regardless. They don’t need to show how rich they are, we all know. It’s getting real in the field. Athletes need to be more humble and take more precautions to protect themselves and their families.

Sesa says:
Well, Larry Bird doesn’t have a ghettofabulous mentality.

Dec.10 at 10:55 am

The Fundament says:
It doesn’t seem like Larry has a problem with going out intil 3:30am…he seems to have an issue with where his players are going out. That being said, what other types of places are going to be open at 3:30am other than those that are seemingly frequented by Mr Tinsley.

whooo! says:
the funniest thing about this story was reading the 3 cars that they took, all of which were tinsley’s. i think it was tinsley driving the rolls royce, one group got to take the benz, and the last party got to drive… a dodge charger?!

Dec.10 at 11:06 am

Captain America says:
Russ, Bird used to go to midnight church service. Seriously, don’t flash bling in all the wrong places.

Dec.10 at 11:14 am

Chris O says:
entry level members of Tinsley’s posse drive the charger, and follow behind the benz and the rolls so that they’ve got a constant reminder of where they are on the ladder and just how high they can climb. Similarly, the Charger gets a dinky little handgun, while the Rolls has a bazooka, and/or a missile launcher in the trunk.

Dec.10 at 11:33 am

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m not suggesting that Tinsley deserved to be in such a bad situation–and I’m thankful no one was seriously hurt–but at some point, after three or four or five situations like this, don’t you start inviting people to your place instead of going out?

Dec.10 at 11:38 am

Russ Bengtson says:
And as for Zo’s comments, I sort of see where he’s coming from, but it’s still a pretty foolish statement. Because at least some of this happens because of WHO these guys are, not what they’re wearing or what they’re carrying. Alonzo Mourning in the club wearing a t-shirt and jeans is still Alonzo Mourning–and someone who wants to get rich quick is gonna still step to him, not Joe Blow.

Dec.10 at 11:40 am

white hot eboy says:
The casual fan may know Alonzo, doubtful they’d know Jamal.

Sesa says:
Usually, we learn from our mistakes in the past. Tinsley… probably not.

Dec.10 at 11:50 am

Rasheedionics says:
I dont think people who step to Tinsley were your regular basketball fans. They’re more fans of “Get rich or Die trying”… Since he lives and parties in Indianapolis, I’m sure he’s pretty well known in that area.

Dec.10 at 11:50 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Yeah, Jamal would be tougher to ID without the posse and the Rolls and whatever else, but THAT said, if you make millions of dollars, where’s the fun unless you get to flaunt it a little? I’m sure he could have just taken a cab to the club, but why? I hate super-conspicuous consumption, but damn, if I were in Jamal’s shoes I’d be rollin’ in a Rolls too.

Dec.10 at 3:25 pm

It’s easy to identify Jamaal Tinsley. He’s the guy who dribble the ball between your legs in a NBA game…

Dec.10 at 3:35 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Tinsley probably IS pretty recognizable in the Indy area, especially at the clubs–even more especially at three a.m. when there are like nine people out. It sounds like the guys who shot at him were looking to give him trouble no matter what. And heck, it’s possible that being in a car as big and bulky as that Rolls saved his life. What I REALLY want to know is what the FORTY-EIGHT-year-old equipment manager was doing out with them at three in the morning. BALLIN’.

Dec.10 at 3:38 pm

j says:
1) I’d imagine the cost of repair to the Rolls is more than my car, in total.
2) Imagine this has to be one of the first times a Rolls will require damage fixed due to an assualt rifle. Unless Russians own them, I suppose.
3) Would Stack Jack have been equipped with a Grenade Launcher, or is that pushing it?

Dec.10 at 3:39 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
the equipment manager got shot in both elbows…what are the odds of that?

Dec.10 at 3:39 pm

jdubbs says:
This seems pretty fishy to me. They followed the car and started shooting back? Why not call the cops and go to the nearest Police station?
Tinsley is showing some appalling lack of judgement to say the least and he’s lucky to be alive. I’ve been in some ghetto-fabulous clubs and they can be waaaay dangerous places, much less guys flossing like these cats.

Dec.10 at 3:43 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
It’s funny, I went to some hip-hop club in Indy with Jermaine O’Neal five or six years ago (he was driving a white Bentley Arnage), and I swear the place closed at 1. Either laws have changed out there since then, or they were on an after-hours mission.

Dec.10 at 4:16 pm

Tariq says:
I don’t like flaunting in any capacity , but I don’t know that Larry Bird or Alonzo Mourning has the right to publicly criticize a grown man for enjoying his own money in a legal way on his own time. I would definitely have a talk with Tinsley if I were in Bird’s position, but at the end of the day you can’t punish him for doing what he did (or didn’t do), even if he was a little foolish.

Dec.10 at 4:53 pm

white hot eboy says:
You’re wrong, Tariq.

Dec.10 at 4:54 pm

Jukai says:
Hold on Tariq. It’s in a legal way RIGHT NOW but Tinsley hasn’t been the most model of citizens. He’s certainly open to some criticism.

Dec.10 at 5:12 pm

No punishment from the Pacers. He didn’t break any rules, the organization says. So does that mean he could go out and do it again this weekend?

its so weird. A few weeks ago i was walking in downtwon Indy, when out of nowhere I see this amazingly hot woman, walking with a man who appeared to be homeless. As I got closer to them the man uttered “Whats up” to me, like I was supposed to know him. Thats when I realized who I was talking with.
Jamaal Tinsley. coincidence? Yes.

Dec.10 at 5:36 pm

jdubbs says:
Cordeazy,
what made him look homeless? I have a hard time believeing that a guy who rolls in well, a Rolls, would be rockin’ anything less than Gucci/Versace or any of the other “chi’s”

Dec.10 at 5:40 pm

rav says:
and how did tinsley get that hot woman? ….

Dec.10 at 5:56 pm

Cordeazy says:
He was wearing old sweat pants, and a v neck undershirt that he was vigoursly sweating through. And he had on sandles with socks, which I just don’t like, it was odd because his entourage was ballin in guchi and the like, but I guess since he’s already paid he doesn’t need to wear decent clothing. He girl was damn beautiful though, with busoms flowing like the mighty mississpi river.

Dec.10 at 6:00 pm

Cordeazy says:
O, and he had a nice ass watch with diamonds a glowin, which i didn’t see from a far. So i guess that negates the homeless visual

Dec.10 at 6:01 pm

roy_twist says:
Did anyone forget that he got shot at. Like hot at, how can you have no sympathy for that. He’s supposed to not go out and have fun and spend because he is supposed to live in fear? Hell no. Honestly, how is he at fault for this? I can understand if it’s just that he gets into these messed up situations, but this one time he IS the victim.

Tariq says:
Oh, I didn’t realize, Eboy.

Hass777 says:
if you think that the haters are ever going to change you can forget that.when your a ball player everyone KNOWS you have money. Its not like your a rapper or something.if i had there kind of money i wouldnt go out much id just hire a bunch of escorts and bring the cluib to me…condums included

Dec.10 at 9:56 pm

jdubbs says:
Hass777 -good in theory, but it sounds like that’s what happened to Sean Taylor, those cats who 187′ed him were at a birthday party at his crib 6 months prior. He didn’t go out to find trouble, trouble found him. I don’t know if I’d trade my humble life for a life in which you can’t trust anyone and everyone wants a piece of you. I read a story on Ron Artest a while back and that $5 million (2.5 after taxes) goes awfully quick with all the money grubbing relatives and the like. Then when you go out you’re getting targeted like crazy. I saw KG out about 3 years ago in SF, and he had crazy security around him.

Dec.10 at 11:28 pm

Dyce says:
I’ve seen tinsley out in NY on multiple occasions. He didnt seem overly flashy, just regular if you didnt follow the nba you wouldnt know who he was…I think its more the people who he goes out with that gets him in trouble.

Dec.11 at 5:52 am

Harlem_World says:
Bird should have something to say on this if Tinsley broke team rules (a curfew during the season, for example), but if no such rules exist - then they really aren’t in a position to say anything. If you don’t like the kind of lifestyle he leads, and its (repeatedly) detrimental to your club - ship him out (if he’s not willing to change). Personally, I think being out in the club at 3:30am with 3 cars full of your boys in a known hotspot isn’t the smartest thing to do during the regular season - but these are ball players, not college professors. You’re going to go with what you know.

Dec.11 at 7:53 am

Sesa says:
Let’s just forget the whole Team rules for now. What if Jamaal Tinsley really enjoyed being in these type of situation? Y’know, the adrenaline rush. Feeling that you’re an inch closer to death.
