Welcome to New York, Zach Randolph

by Marcel Mutoni

When the Knicks acquired Z-Bo from Portland, most of us had visions of screaming headlines from the NY tabloids condemning Zach and the infamous Hoop Family.

As it turns out, a classic Randolph incident would be the least of the Knicks’ problems right about now, and as the boos at the Garden rained down lustily on his team last night, Z-Bo quickly found out just how tough life in Gotham can be.

From the NY Post:

“I didn’t like that,” Randolph said. “I ain’t never heard nothing like that. Coming from Portland, I ain’t never heard the fans do something like that. It was surprising.”

Randolph said the crowd’s animosity toward Thomas pained him.

“It’s hard on me because Isiah brought me here, and he’s a good coach,” Randolph said. “We ain’t winning right now, but [the fans need to understand] it’s early in the season and I’m new. We just have to work it out.”

Obviously you have to feel bad for Zach Randolph, who has been nothing but a model citizen since arriving in town, but then again, what else did he expect? This is New York and these are the Knicks.

Zach’s been pretty strong so far (absolute beast on the boards), and normally I wouldn’t side with fans who boo their own team, but in this case I do. Knicks fans boo not [just] because the team isn’t gelling, but because they see a team that doesn’t care about defense and one that’s just lazy and selfish on offense. Some players do have a knack for defense, but playing D so much about effort, and Knicks fans aren’t seeing it. The offense is pass it to one guy, stand around until he turns it over, and then head back the other way. And it’s not the earliness of the season that’s keeping Eddy Curry, all 6′11″ and 285 lbs of him, from averaging more than 7 rpg. All we want is to see is some semblance of effort; Starks wasn’t that great of a talent, but the guy gets revered in New York because we saw him busting his *ss night in night out. My only problem with the booing is that it shouldn’t just be for Isiah, just about the whole team deserves it after a blowout at home like that.

How about crowd’s animosity toward Steph (which was just as bad). That didn’t pain him? May be Steph’s huge smile when he heard the boos made it look like he wasn’t suffering but I know he was crying on inside.

at the end of the day, the players need to put their heart and soul into playing the game. coach can only give them the game plan. they have to go out and execute. 29 turnovers wont get it done against any team, even against the hawks!

Trust me it’s only a matter of time before Randolph steps in it again. Everywhere he’s been since middleschool he’s got into trouble. New York is too big and has too many temptations.

Dolan needs a bigger share of the responsibility here. I know you can’t fire the owner, but you should be able to give vote of no confidence or something. You can’t put all the dumb violent kids in the same room together, neglect them, never punish them, and then act like it’s all their fault that the place burns down.

D-Advocate says:
Hey Z-Bo, New York is not like Portland, cuz Knick fans actually consistently pay attention and care about the Knicks. Last year the Knicks were the top 3 in making money in the NBA, and the Knicks weren’t even that good last year, the fans were supporting the team thru and thru.

D-Advocate: You mean the team from a city with more than twice the population of any other city in the USA (8.2 million) sells more jerseys and t-shirts than the team with just over half a million citizens? What an amazing statistic…

“You might get fooled when you come from out’ta town..” pretty much sums it up for Zach.. How long before he gets tired of grabbing boards on a disinterested losing team, and start grabbing drinks at an interesting stripclub.. Hell Starburied can give him a ride there..

Simon you’re funny because Portland, Oregon only has just 1 pro sports Franchise they could support, but it was a great idea that they selected an overrated player in Greg Oden over a legit player in Kevin Durant, how did that turn out? New York, New York the most competitive city in the world.

Booed by your home crowd, that’s got to be embarrassing! I wonder what is being said on the court… do the visiting teams crack jokes? cause there really is no comeback when you’ve got 18,000+ booing your ass on your home court
