With the Hawks, Disaster Dickau and Sam Mitchell…

by Lang Whitaker

Wednesday! Things are slow around the SLAM Dome today. We are still mostly without carpet, which means glue-covered cement floors. Also, all the lights are on, for the first time since I started here. This was an office designed to be viewed in the dark.

A few things…

• I was reading up on all the Steph stuff today, and it’s really fascinating. The most ridiculous thing to me is that Steph and Isiah have the same agent! Which means if it comes down to a buyout, who will do the negotiating, Isiah and his own agent?

• I wrote another Hawks column this week, and it can be found here. The Hawks are going to beat Charlotte tonight, by the way.

• Sam Mitchell, still gangsta. Love what he told the media when asking them to leave rookie Jamario Moon alone: “It would be a favour to him, because you guys, throughout the history of time, have ruined good young players with your expectations and what they should do and what they should be.” Throughout the history of time!

• Bulls fans, want to feel good about your team? Guess who’s organizing the team meetings? Journeyman Adrian Griffin.

• Disaster Dickau is back with a new company that sells..customized poker chips. The company’s website is here. According to the site, the customized chips make great business cards. Sure, if you’re looking to never get hired anywhere except Vegas.

• And finally…he’s baaa-acck!

dickau has had this company for a while. he at least had it last year with the blazers. i remember reading about it and thinking “good for dan. he sure as hell shouldn’t rest on his basketball laurels.”

Yes he is. Sam “I Still Wear and S-Curl” Mitchell is acting like he is 19 or something.

I don’t know how i missed these yesterday. Sam Mitchell is crazy, in a good way. Moon is 27 and he’s been with the globetrotters before the L! Hope you enjoyed the Hawks game before the injuries, Lang. I didn’t see the game but it doesn’t sound good when Law says “I don’t think its broken” ouchh.

@ Patrick: Don’t give Swirsky ideas! If he reads this post - I pray he doesn’t - then we’re done for.

here’s another nice quote from mitchell on michael grange’s site “Hockey players fight up in the stands! Basketball has one incident and all of a sudden….oooooohhhhhhh. It was a major thing. How long in history have hockey players been going up in the stands? Since time began.”

Chuck Swirsky makes basketball less-enjoyable for me.

Russ Bengtson says:
Lang, I don’t think your name’s prominent enough in the header for your Hawks column.

Paps says:
Swirsky’s good. He’s just a super fan and needs to relax. He thinks every Raptor is an allstar. Calderon is good but he’s no allstar unless he gets to play major minutes.

Sam Mitchell's Conscience says:
Yeah Moon is 27, but Mitchell was pissed at the media for drooling over Moon after two good games in a row (three now) when they were ignoring him before. Makes sense to me. I still wish that BC would light a fire under Mitchell’s ass so that he’d tell them to feed Bosh every freakin possession though.

Nov.15 at 4:57 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
So wait–should the media have been all over an unheralded 27-year-old training camp invitee from the start, or should they now be ignoring said 27-year-old training camp invitee who happened to a) beat out a one-time lottery pick for a roster spot, and b) beat out a big-money free agent for a starting spot? Dude’s a story now, he wasn’t nearly as much of one when he first showed up. That’s the way it works.

Kevin says:
Swirsky can on your nerves after a while because, like Paps said, he’s first and foremost a fan and he thinks pretty highly of the hometown players.. it translates great in Toronto because most of the fans here haven’t been exposed to NBA basketball for that long (relative to other cities that have fans who are more informed/aware).. that being said, i think he’s one reason why Raptors fans are so fanatical despite being largely ignorant.. since moving to Toronto, just about everyone i’ve met has hopped on the Raptors bandwagon, which is great (coz if we had this in Vancouver, the Grizzlies would’ve stayed there), but most people who follow the Raps aren’t invested or involved with basketball beyond following their home team.. PS. can someone help/force Chris Bosh to gain another 20 pounds or so so he doesn’t get knocked around anymore? i’m assuming he’s tried, but… he needs it if he’s gonna survive being a PF/C in the NBA.

Hoop Dreamz says:
Whatever the conventional method of handling a certain situation is, Sam Mitchell does the opposite. He’s nuts! Can’t help but like the guy, even if he is a d*ck

Nov.16 at 1:04 pm

Hoop Dreamz says:
Hey Kevin, is it true that VanCity has exclusive-EXCLUSIVE sneakers? I also heard the bud there is ridic… Kicks and trees, my boy used to tell me, that’s all Vancouver’s good for! LOL

Nov.16 at 3:51 pm

Kevin says:
haha.. true on both counts. designer bud AND fresh kicks. Vancouver’s a great place to live in general.. minus the rain, but rain > the intense winter/pollution/traffic that is Toronto.
