The Bulls Are Perfectly Happy With Their Team, Thank You
Coming into the 2008 season, the Chicago Bulls are one of the more intriguing storylines to follow. Despite humiliating the Miami Heat (who were defending a title, no less) in last year’s Playoffs, no one (other than Russ, of course) is expecting very much from this team going into the new season.
Unlike the Celtics, they didn’t make any waves in the free agent market; Chicago wasn’t in the press like the Knicks; and they seem to have cooled on the idea of trading for the League’s biggest problem. Yup, they’re content with what they’ve got and they’re ready to go to war with them. From the Sporting News:
“You could make the case that we didn’t throw some crazy deal together,” [General Manager] John Paxson says. “But our young players are going to get better. That’s the path we’ve chosen, and I am happy with it.”
And why wouldn’t he be happy? Led by an impressive (if not young) cast of talented, tough, and battle-tested players, the Bulls have what it takes to compete with just about anyone in the East.
It just might turn out that - at least, this is what Bulls fans are hoping - the best move is no move at all.

Damn you floe … anyways, I like the bulls … good team that will probably do well and only get better … if only they could get a real big-man low-post threat… sorry but Noah and Wallace ain’t gonna cut it

I still think the Bulls will have the best record in the East this year. (Check Cheryl and my Heat preview)The playoffs will still show that the lack of a post threat will be their undoing. Which sucks. But it is reality. To echo Kiyan’s Noah/Wallace statement.

Adrian says:
Most projections have them going 1st to 3rd in the East and into at least the second round of the playoffs, if not further…I’d say at least two thirds of the league would love to have such “low” expectations of their team.

white hot eboy says:
They’ll struggle with the Pistons, the Raptors and the Celtics. They can run over teams like the Nets, Wiz, probably the Heat again, Magic and the Cavs. Their defense keeps them in games, but the lack of a overpowering go to guy (ie: Wade, Lebron, Kobe, Gil, Melo) is another attribute they are lacking.

Adrian says:
I agree Eboy. In saying that, I think a break out season for Deng is on the cards.

The sad thing is that they have a low post threat already, and they refuse to play him: Mike Sweetney. Who cares if he is fat? It hasn’t stopped Shaq.

Bodie, that was maybe the most moronic thing you’ve said in a long while. Michael Sweetney=Bodie after a binge weekend at In N Out.

Mike Sweetney? Low-post threat? Don’t think so…

Jared says:
Sweetney can play in the post but he’s no threat…and the bulls arent gonna struggle with the raps, anyone that plays the raps physical can tear them apart, and the bulls might be the most physical team in the East. They have it all but a post presence, but seeing how Deng adds to his arsenal every season, maybe he can be their post presence. He’s gonna need to get off the wing if they wanna play him and nocioni…arguably two of their best players at the same time. This team plays D and has well rounded players…I think it rests on BG’s shoulders. He’s gotta become a take over go-to guy. He’s got killer instincts, he needs to be consistent with them…

white hot eboy says:
Jared, if Ben was about 4-6 inches taller, he might be THAT guy. Otherwise, he is a good, streaky shooter with limited skills in every other statistical category.

Sweetney can play you nitwits. And he is by far the best (i.e. only) post threat on the team.

Warning: Logic Alert. Stats about to be used to support and argument.
In 2004/2005, Sweetney played 20 minutes a night for 77 games for the Knicks.
He averaged 8.4 points and 5.4 boards in that 20 minutes, shot 53% from the field, and 75% from the line.
I think he could easily duplicate those numbers for the Bulls now, also in about 20 minutes a night.
Give it to him on the block, spot your shooters up, and hide him on D (no small feat). Unless of course, unbeknownst to me, he has gained a ton of weight since 2004/2005.
And by a ton, I mean more than 30 pounds.

I don’t know why but I’m just not sold on the bulls , get Reef from sacremento for God’s sake it solves your post scoring need and he obviously doesn’t have an ego to get in the way.Maybe I just hate the Bulls because I’m a Knicks fan but I really would take the Cavs over them this year and possibly the Nets too.The east is so f*cking wide open. What if Ben Wallace just falls off and gets you 8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks that sh*t isn’t scaring anybody.I think this year is gonna be tough for them.

Jared says:
i feel you on sweets but he did it in 20 mins cause his conditioning cant keep him on the floor for 40…granted he’s got a big body (nh) but he’s not in the greatest shape…not jerome james shape, but he can’t give his max effort for mid to upper 30’s a game…he’s talented as hell tho

jbn74sb says:
You don’t have to be in that great of shape to play Sweetney’s style for 20 minutes a night. I mean, what else are you going to do? Give it to your $60,000,000 center who will throw the ball at the basket as if the ball were a pile of flaming dog sh-t? And couldn’t make a free throw if he were throwing a grain of rice in to Britney’s gaping p-ssy?
There are so many stops in play, and so many possessions where the centers aren’t involved (fastbreaks), that Sweetney can just stay on one end and eat fried shrimp for half of those 20 minutes.

Candice says:
Sweetney isn’t on the team no more. Their bigs are Noah, Wallace, Tyrus, Joe Smith, and Aaron Gray. Also during preseason games Deng has been playing in the post and Gray also shows some promise in the post too. As long as he is beside Ben Wallace, Tyrus, etc…. I think Gray will be suffice ennough for them and Deng.

Oct.23 at 3:19 pm
Phil B says:
i’m not impressed by these bulls. kirk is an ok point guard, ben’s too short and too streaky, luol has a ton of potential and will probably end up being quite good. who’s their pf? and i like ben wallace for D but they’ve got to get a scorer at pf. they were dumb to do the deal with portland as lamarcus would have been a much better fit for them than thomas, but i’m happy they did as i’m a blazer fan.

CHRIS says:
Hey jbn74sb Mike Sweetney isn’t even with the team anymore!
Oct.23 at 4:21 pm
CHRIS says:
The bulls should play Wallace at PF and Gray at Center. This way they have kirk,Ben,deng, wallace, gray….good starting lineup…bring Noce, thomas, and noah off the bench for energy…
Oct.23 at 4:27 pm
2nd seed says:
You can keep Aldridge, Thomas will be better…his only shortcoming last year was that he wasn’t the ’stud’ rookie on a crap team. So no 34 mins of burn a game in losing efforts. Ty will have some 8-dunk games and be all over sportscenter in no-time!
Oct.23 at 4:44 pm
Phil B says:
i don’t care about my athletes being on sportscenter. and actually aldridge hardly played last year because of z-bo, so he didn’t get a chance to shine until the last few weeks. thomas had an open PF position to take if he wanted it and he just doesn’t seem to be able to get out of your crazy coaches doghouse. sure thomas can jump like crazy, but i’d rather have someone who can actually play the game. we can revisit this issue in a year or so and we’ll all laugh at you.

Don’t think the Kobe trade rumours will die that easily. Gutting your team’s core for a superstar worked with Shaq, right?
Oct.23 at 5:19 pm
Joel O's says:
I dunno how no one’s brought this up ever, at least to me, but Tyrus Thomas reminds me a lot of a young Kenyon Martin. If he at this point develops some smidgen of a post game, think of how good he’ll be teamed up with Noah in the years to come.

eboy, i dont see how you can hate on bg. “streaky shooter” is bull$hit. everyone is a streaky shooter, kobe, ray allen, etc. you make 6 in a row, you go 4-16 like kobe did tonight. bg is legit, choke on your hate.

Sweetney no longer a Bull? My gosh, I haven’t been paying attention for some time and things are just different, you know. I’m just glad they were able to keep Rodman, Pippen and MJ together for another year. I think those three will carry ‘m to another title. Right, fellas?

I think aaron gray will end up being that low-post player they need and Joakim “bust-a-move” Noah will be pretty good too.

Bulls will be just fine. John Paxson has a plan, and Scott Skiles can coach. Ben got his Head Band / Pillow Case back. They will top the 49-33 from last year. I know I wouldn’t want to face these guys in the first round.
Oct.24 at 10:01 am
Candice says:
jbn74, go to Bulls.com and he’s not on the roster period. Last season was his last season with the Bulls. Who I listed as big men in my first post is what they have. Also I think Tyrus will be the starting PF opening night.
Oct.24 at 3:35 pm
Old Skool Sloan says:
The bulls don’t need a consistent low-post threat, they need to be able to occasionally go down low for a possession here and there. They’ve done that with success this pre-season with Deng (either points or a quick foul), Noah (who passes out of the post well), Thomas (who can’t body anyone, but if catches down deep can elevate over defenders) and Gray (who has taken the Big Sweets bangin-bodies role). Not ideal, sure, but enough to help when the Js aren’t dropping. BTW, Sweets is yet to sign with anyone, so if you really love him, get him on your rec team!
Oct.24 at 3:37 pm
theworm20uk says:
the bulls need major post presence ,noah will be the biggest flop in NBA history if his pre-season run is anything to go by ,deng will be an all star this year ,and BG and hinrich have the guards spots locked down, which just leaves the post ….. Big Ben is still one of the premier defenders in the league but couldnt score in a room full of out of work hookers, gray seems to have the fundementals but is no saviour and Tyrus is going to be good when he packs on some weight and learns to play within the system

Old Skool Sloan says:
Actually, Noah has had a decent preseason for a rook who couldn’t play summer ball cause of injury. He makes hustle plays, is good on the boards, disrupts play around the basket and creates opportunities for his teammates to grab off. rebounds by being a pest. Reminds me of a poor-man’s Dennis Rodman in some senses. That should appeal to you theworm20uk. You should try watching the games.

ok sloan i watch every bulls game .i live in Chicago ,and noah would be great if her could keep hold of the ball i watched him fluff 4 catches in the post in a row ..i appreciate the fact he can and does help rebounding especially offensive but i believe the subject wqas a low post scoroer which he isnt !!!! i love da bulls and think noah will be a good role player for the team but as i said he is no dominant force on the blocks
