Eddy Curry Had Crazy Visions, Son!
Going into the 2008 season, few teams are as fascinating as the New York Knickerbockers. Heaven knows they’ve had an eventful summer, and the regular season - featuring an embattled head coach and point guard, and the immortal Zach Randolph and his crew prowling the streets of Gotham - promises to be full of headlines and intrigue.
Amidst the madness and hysteria, however, we find a reasonably talented basketball team perfectly capable of making noise in the Eastern Conference. Eddy Curry, its starting center, believes the Knicks have what it takes to keep playing past the last game of the regular season. From the NY Post:
Eddy Curry was asked about the Knicks’ timeframe for making the playoffs, rather than merely hoping and planning for it.
“We’re at that point [now],” Curry said. “I feel like we’re real close, even though we haven’t played a regular season game yet. It’s just a feeling here that’s a lot different than it’s been in the past.”
The Knicks, after everything they’ve been through in the last few years, in the Playoffs? Hey, why not.
The talent, the size, the youth, and even a healthy touch of the insane (see: Robinson, Nate) is certainly there.
Crazier things have happened, after all.

I say they get in, but they’re gonna have a rough first round exit unfortunately… unless lots of players really turn their games around.

If they don’t have to play D? Sure. But getting the the playoffs usually means you have to make some stops. Q & David Lee looked good in the last preseason game with the Celtics, but I’m guessing they’re gonna get exhausted trying to cover for Curry, Zach, Marbury & Crawford every trip down the floor….
Oct.26 at 2:45 pm
Rob Paxon says:
I actually think as the season goes on their perimeter D is going to be pretty solid all around. And really, that’s their only chance at being an even competent defensive team, because even if they’re fantastic on the perimeter, it will only serve to offset the terrible interior D. They can do it, but even if they live up to that possibility on the outside, some teams are just plain gonna chop them up, which is why I have them making the playoffs and then getting shredded in the first round.

Rob Paxon says:
I think Zach and Jamal are both gonna up their games on D, for the record. Zach has put in good effort on the defensive end… he just isn’t good. I doubt he will be either, but in comparison to Curry he’s going to be alright this year. Just a hunch… effort counts for something. Speaking of effort, Jamal’s the exact opposite. He’s got the speed, some 20+ pounds of added muscle, and a nice wingspan to be a solid perimeter defender. But as we all know he is allergic to screens. He says the muscle is giving him more confidence on D. Not gonna get my hopes up there but last season he was overall decent on D, moreso than people give him credit for, and I see him being slightly better this year. Don’t look at me like I’m crazy, because I’m not saying this is going to be a good defensive team. I just see the potential for them being good enough in areas defensively to get them through many games if their offense clicks the way it has potential to (which is an equally large and looming if).

If Eddy Curry wants to make the playoffs, maybe he should work at making his career rebounding averages higher than… Dwyane Wade’s.

hahahaha, that is why they say that the Post is entertaining. Now seriously, we are talking about Knicks. Eddy probobly has a post-traumatic flashes from summer and they kind of influence his thinking. Isiah as coach, a hard working guy, but to be a good coach you have to have some kind of system and idea what your players are supposed to do. Team is in a need of defensive system and defense minded players and what do they do in summer? To a team loaded with shoot-first guys, they add another one and never address their real need. And did you check last nights game? Nets take it seriously for 48 minutes and the Knicks loose with 40, like against C’s, and I suppose in the up and coming season against any Western powerhouse that take them seriously. Here is my prediction: Knicks will make the playoffs only if every other ball club decides to play with bench against them every night, barely.

Rasta Man says:
I’ve been a Knicks fan for 40 yrs. I’ve seen a lot of good times and bad. I expect our interior D to be suspect but perimeter D should be fine. Not convinced about the shoot first attitude, Marbury is playing like a true point. Even S.Nash shoots the ball. Crawford and Curry played a nice inside game last year until Crawford was hurt. This is still the preseason so they are trying different things. With the Knicks playing in the east we should make the playoffs. We have a nice combo of youth and veterans. Wish we could have kept D. Nichols though. We have a deep bench,we can play 9 or 10 players easy.

Was at the Garden last night to watch the Nets decimate the Knicks. Memo to Isiah No. 1: Hope is not a strategy. Memo to Isiah No. 2: Stephon Marbury is done. Now pay him $42 million the next two seasons. Memo to Isiah No. 3: Neither Eddy Curry nor Zach Randolph could guard a bank with the a machine gun…and Curry may be the worse passing big man in the NBA. The Garden booed the team lustily throughout the third quarter and they richly deserved it. Oh year, that David Lee experiment at SF? Forget it, the boy cannot shoot.

Still, I think they still lacked a pure shooter and perimeter defender. BTW, I think Q-Rich is a volume shooter, not a good shooter.
