Seems a little premature to making such a decision, considering all of the unknowns for the Lakers entering the season.

It might not be a bad thing to for Phil to limp off into the night. His style of coaching is very successful for good, veteran teams that are trying to become great. But that same style costs the Lakers a number of wins as he lets the players figure out how to solve their own problems in the middle of the game. Call a timeout Phil!

“Retire” at the end of the season, sign on with the Rockets in ‘09 when Rick Adelman inevitably flames out in the playoffs for the second straight year.

Cheryl says:
Or ‘retire’, get your hip right, then coach the Celtics and make Red turn over in his grave!

Of course, after you win a chip with Jesus’ Truth Ticket…

Original or Extra Crispy? At around $10mil per, he’ll be back. If only for another year or two.

Myles Brown says:
And I like it when he doesn’t call timeouts.

jbn74sb says:
And his nonsensical substitution patterns, Myles? His absolute refusal to run a two man game/ pick and roll with Kobe and Lamar, resulting in some horrendous matchup problems for the opponent? All while Cook and/or Half-Pipe space the floor on the weak-side, and drain a 3 if their man comes over to help?
I have not been a big fan of PJ’s coaching the last 2 years. And while I didn’t like Smush and do like Farmar, you don’t change your starting PG on a playoff team with 2 games left in the season to start a kid who played in the D league.

What a Patroon.

Myles Brown says:
I trust Phil’s judgment. He knows the psychological ramifications of a move like that. It would-and did-crush Smush. But that kid was a head case to begin with. The other side of the coin is that it invigorates Farmar, who is actually still with the team. Showing that confidence in him at such a crucial time could pay dividends in the future. I dont know about the two man game, but he did make adjustments to the traditional half court setting of the Triangle and encouraged the team to run more than he ever has. And in all honesty, once the team was hit with that rash of injuries around Feb-March, I think he just gave up and told Kobe to go for it. Its hard to place any realistic expectations on a coach missing three of his five starters. Especially when the team is one of the youngest in the lig to begin with.

jbn74sb says:
I don’t disagree Myles, but I think a more traditional basketball coach would be better suited for this team.

Myles Brown says:
Like Rudy T? I’m honestly scared for Phil to leave cause I seriously can’t imagine one other candidate for this high profile-and high pressure-of a gig. Except… And If Larry Brown even gets on a plane flying westward, I swear Im gonna break something. Something expensive too, like a TV. I don’t care if he’s just going from Philly to Michigan, walk there backwards. I don’t ever want to see that guy’s face anywhere near L.A.

Oct.3 at 4:54 pm

jbn74sb says:
Not like Rudy T, and whoever it would be is going to have an uphill battle gaining the respect of 24, assuming he’s still around. And please, whatever you do, never mention LB again. I don’t want to give Mitch any ideas. In fact, hiring him would be about the only thing to put my fandom on hiatus.

Myles Brown says:
If Kobe gets traded would you support the team he went to in addition to the Lakeshow? Or are you a sports monogamist?

Oct.3 at 5:01 pm

jbn74sb says:
I am a proud sports monogamist. Traitors like eboy make me sick.

Oct.3 at 5:07 pm

Myles Brown says:
I’ve always been of the mind that it’s a players lig and because of all the roster turnover, I’m usually more inclined to support the individual more than the team they represent. I really hope Kobe doesn’t leave so I don’t have to make a choice. Cause I’d feel like a traitor, but something tells me I’d do it anyway.

Oct.3 at 5:10 pm

jbn74sb says:
Depending on the circumstances of how he left, I may still root for Kobe, but not his team, if that makes any sense. Otherwise, I am an LA sports fan. UCLA hoops (my pops played there for Wooden) and football, Dodgers, and Lakers. I tend to root for players in the NFL, and change my team allegiances accordingly, since LA hasn’t had a team in years, and I liked neither the Raiders or Rams as a youth.

Oct.3 at 5:15 pm

Cheryl says:
Yeah, I felt that way when Shaq left (I was a huge fan to that point, not that I’m not a fan now, but you know…) and made the Heat a favorite. But I’m like Max, I tend to follow the players I like and root for their teams. Like Tim and the Spurs, ‘Melo and the Nuggs, JKidd and the Nets, and DHoward and the Magic. Call me fair weather, but i just really love the game.

Oct.3 at 5:15 pm

Myles Brown says:
I hear you. There’s alot of Wolves fans in the Twin Cities that could give a sh*t about the Celtics, but still want to see them win for KG’s sake. The only actual TEAM that I can say with certainty that I’ll care about for life is the Chicago Cubs.

Oct.3 at 5:18 pm

jbn74sb says:
The circumstances of how Shaq left made me root against him and his team for the rest of his career, which really ended about 2 years ago.
At least until the Heat Brian Grant (read: buy out) his contract after this season, and he signs for the veteran minimum for the Lakers to back up Bynum.
