Report: Shawn Marion Wants a Boatload of Money
When opening the sports section in any of the Phoenix-area papers, you can expect to read some kind of variation of the following headlines: Steve Nash Is Amazing; Amare Seems to Be Fully Back; Shawn Marion Is Whining. Rinse, lather, repeat. It never fails.
That’s why it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the news out of Phoenix, according to the Arizona Republic, is that The Matrix is unhappy with his contract situation and is seeking a sizable extension:
But according to several Suns sources, Marion seems to be unhappy that the team will not talk about a contract extension. The word is that the four-time All-Star, in his eighth year with the team, wants $60 million over three years. Marion, already the highest-paid Suns player, will make $16.4 million this season and $17.8 million for 2008-09.
Now, I suppose, the question becomes, Is Shawn Marion worth $20 million per season? In my opinion, he is not. For a guy who does a Pippen-esque job of filling up the stat sheet, Marion benefits tremendously from the system Mike D’Antoni runs and if he were smart, he’d be buying Steve Nash dinner every night during the season.
It’s pretty simple, actually: If you’re not a franchise kind of guy, you know, the kind of player who puts butts in the seats, commands double teams on every possession and takes the full brunt of the blame should the team underachieve, you cannot ask for $20 million per. Shawn Marion, unlike only a handful of guys who meet the criteria in the previous sentence, does not deserve that kind of money.
A propos of nothing: Watching Monday Night Football last night, I yet again came to the realization that Vince Young is indeed THAT dude. While Reggie Bush is his athletic equal and has occasional flashes of brilliance, he doesn’t have the same kind of magnetism that oozes out of Young.
Vince exudes the kind of swag generally reserved for heavy-handed pimps, certain heads of state and assassins. Like Jordan in his day, even his misses (or in Young’s case, incomplete passes and other botched plays) look good. He is one of those rare athletes whose very presence alone is worth the price of admission.

VY is just different, I’m struggling with an NBA comparison … the best I can come up with is if Air Canada was a winner

I think Vince Young is also like a foot taller than Reggie…

Vince Young=the NFL’s Lebron James. Young, rugged, mega-talented, franchise-changing, almost otherworldy ability. Dude is nice nice. (So good had to say it twice) Oh yeah, fu*k the Matrix.

Mo Charlo says:
Last Year Vince was about the same as Baron Davis. Dragging an overachieving team to the cusp of the playoffs (except Baron got to the playoffs and won, and Vince almost got there).

…at least you don’t have to worry about him getting injured (knock on wood)

hilde says:
Marion is NOT a beneficiary of D’Antoni’s system, nor does he owe his success to Steve Nash. Sure, collectively they take the Suns to another level but Marion was putting in work since his second season, 3 years before the arrival mike and steve.
Sep.25 at 12:17 pm
Mo Charlo says:
I like eboy’s comment better than mine (relish it, eboy). Vince is very much LeBron in his ticket-selling ability, the ability to make things happen that make you go, “whoa, how did…” and all-around marketability.

Jpolk says:
VY is so average, I hate people jumping on the bandwagon. He has yet to throw for 200 yards, and he even discredited McNabb when he said black QB’s have it tougher. VY should be fondling the sack of number 5 because of his greatness. He then says he wanted to prove he was a “Quata Back” after the game speak english please

how does that man (VY, not Matrix) not have a proper nickname?

This nitwit cannot possibly believe he is worth that kind of money, even in today’s NBA. Perhaps this is a ploy to force himself out of town.

Holy sh-t! My comment actually appeared. I am not sure how you have all gotten through through your days recently without my pearls of wisdom, which for some reason have been disappearing like the wives of Heat players as soon as I hit submit.

Allenp says:
Marion does not deserve $20 million a year. That’s what Iverson got when he signed his last extension in Philly. Paul Pierce didn’t deserve that money either. Mutoni is right, to get $20 million you can only be slightly less effective than the best in the league, like KG, Duncan, Kobe, Bron and Wade. Marion is nice, but he’s not that nice.
Sep.25 at 12:28 pm
Allenp says:
Although, I will point out again that he killed before D’Antoni and Nash. His shooting percentage wasn’t as great, but he was still extremely effective. He’s been nice since his second year in the league. I think he gets upset that people always tie his success to the Nash and his coach. That would bother me too. People never tie Nash’s success to the fact that he upgraded to Amare and Marion over Finley and Dirk, while also getting to run more.
Sep.25 at 12:29 pm
Allenp says:
I should have said that people “rarely” attribute Nash’s success to that. Never is too strong a word.
Sep.25 at 12:30 pm
Myles Brown says:
In my house ‘rarely’ means ‘all the time’.

Another thing I have in common with Shaq then, eboy. I’m overweight, have an inflated sense of self-worth, lots of hos on the side, and no one missed me, similar to the Heat’s feelings about Shaq in the 4th quarter of the 2006 Finals games. Now if only I couled $20,000,000 per…

Shawn Marion is an excellent player, and will continue to produce when he’s playing somewhere else. Cause f*ck giving that dude $20 million per. Enjoy free agency, Shawn. Hope you enjoy the salary cap.

Russ Bengtson says:
Actually, they should trade him for Andrei Kirilenko TODAY.

Sam Rubenstein says:
Vince is amazing. NBA comparison would be Iverson’s prime in that he makes a team full of nobodys competitive. And people said Iverson is too small for the NBA, Vince throws ball too weird for the NFL and he doesn’t do well on standardized testing.
He is good.

Sep.25 at 1:16 pm
Dennard says:
Aside from the Matrix’s need to be appreciated, I blame the lunacy of the NBA market for this request. Matrix sees that Rashard Lewis gets 20 mill per, so he is probably thinking, “Sh*t, I’m better than him. I can at least get that for 3 years.” Hence, his want for 20 mill per. It ain’t my money so I could give a sh*t what he gets. 20 mill a year to most of these owners is like $100 a year to an average joe/jane.
Sep.25 at 1:17 pm
Bryan says:
Some sucker GM will give Marion the money he wants.Cause he is ultra athletic, and someone will say “he put up these numbers being option three!amazing!” and pay him watch him score 25 meaningless points a night on a losing team cause you can’t build a team around him. He’s a great piece in a puzzle but not the centerpiece.
Sep.25 at 1:19 pm
Dennard says:
Vince Young = Randall Cunningham 3000, only bigger and stronger.
Sep.25 at 1:21 pm
Bryan says:
Damn sometimes I forget to type words like “and” or “of” etc and it ruins the whole comment.
Sep.25 at 1:24 pm
Bryan says:
My favorite thing about Vince Young is his attitude, he just plays like he’s a badass.Running over DBs and throwing the ball at them like “f*ck you”.That’s the thing Reggie Bush seems to be missing the whole “I can do whatever the f*ck I want to out here” attitude. He had it in college so maybe it’s just a confidence thing or something who knows, hopefully he gets that back though cause his speed vs.everyone in the nfl’s speed is like iversons quickness vs. everyone in the nba’s quickness.Just that whole other level.
Sep.25 at 1:34 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
bryan is chukaz. trix for rj and change would be great for the nets. kidd would love him for endlessly running the floor, he would catch at least 5 oops a game. make it happen rod thorn

Bryan, I thought the Dolphin’s were getting a speedster in Ted Ginn, Jr and all I’ve seen so far is some dude that moves about as quick as me. Slow-ass bitc*. Can’t return a kickoff or a punt to save his life.

paniscus says:
It would be 50% poetic justice if the Jazz trade AK-47 for Matrix–Matrix deserves to be treated like the bitch that he is. Although it’s only 50% justice because AK-47 warrants the same treatment. Maybe Matrix should go play in Russia and AK could stay in Mo-Mo town.
Sep.25 at 1:40 pm
paniscus says:
BTW, whoever picked that pic of Marion to accompany this story deserves a Coke. That one’s hilarious.
Sep.25 at 1:42 pm
Bryan says:
I thought Ted Ginn was over rated to begin with though I think reggie bush is different, he just seems to have lost that dominating attitude he had in college, I don’t think he expected everyone to cover like they do in the league. He thought he was gonna roll over everyone like he did in college and I think it has him shook a little.
Sep.25 at 1:45 pm
the Birdman says:
I don’t know if this workd under the salary cap or anything, but Kerr should trade the Matrix for Gerald Wallace. Wallace would flourish in an uptempo system, and would likely produce numbers equal or greater. The only thing that would be lost would be Marion’s 3pt presence, but PHX as enough of that already.
Sep.25 at 1:47 pm
Myles Brown says:
Marion makes twice as much as Gerald. You’d have to throw in Morrison and another player too. Probably Michael Jordan.
Sep.25 at 1:52 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
If Michael Jordan played with Steve Nash, maybe he’d finally realize his potential.
Sep.25 at 1:56 pm

I would offer Russ more glowing compliments if he were a size 13 instaed of an 11 or whatever it is. Im still hoping to get in his will though. Maybe I could make a few trades on NT…
Sep.25 at 2:00 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
And after two seasons in New Jersey, Shawn Marion would have people lining up to give him $20 million per. He’d be like Kenyon Martin times a thousand.
Sep.25 at 2:00 pm
Russ Bengtson says:

Sep.25 at 2:45 pm
Allenp says:
Marion could kill in the East. If Kidd can get 8 boards in the East, Marion could average like 13! LQTM (Laughing quietly to myself) Seriously, some people seem to have forgotten exactly what Kidd did for Kenyon Martin and Richard Jefferson. What he helped make Lucious Harris into. Jason Kidd is the effing truth. On a totally unrelated note, Top Five PGs of all time in order 1.Magic 2. Oscar Robertson 3. Isiah Thomas 4. John Stockton 5. Jason Kidd.
Sep.25 at 2:54 pm
Bryan says:
Yeah he will get more rebounds cause the nets miss more shots.Jkidd is great but at this point I take Nash cause he shoots 50,40,90 and kidd shoots like 40,32,80. He won’t score anymore than he does out west. He is what he is.
Sep.25 at 2:57 pm
Myles Brown says:
Zeke was a more dynamic scorer than Stockton, but Stock played better D and was a more pure PG. I guess it depends on who you surround them with, but either way it’s a respectable list. However if you expand that list to six the next name better be GP…
Sep.25 at 3:03 pm
Allenp says:
GP’s close. I’d have to really think about the next five. And the Zeke vs. Stockton debate is a worthy one. I liked Zeke’s game more, but Stockton was a beast as a right handed bandit.
Would GP really beat Clyde Frazier? I’m not sure.
Sep.25 at 3:04 pm
Bryce says:
6.Rod Strickland 7. Archie Clark 8. Chris Whitney 9. Phil Chenier 10. God Shamgod
Sep.25 at 3:08 pm
Myles Brown says:
People always tell me about Clyde, but I don’t know enough firsthand to really say anything. I’ve seen alot of tape on a lot of older stars, but Clyde just wasn’t on that list. Although I did peep his masterpiece against West in the Finals. On the strength of that, I’d certainly put him up there on the list, its just I’ve seen alot more of the glove so I’ma ride with him for now.
Sep.25 at 3:12 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
Clyde had one of the sickest Finals performances ever in the alleged Willis Reed game. I’d put him ahead of the Glove just on the strength of his winning chips. People older than me who actually saw him in his prime might put him even higher.
Sep.25 at 3:15 pm
Myles Brown says:
I feel like I should use more superfluous words whenever I speak about Clyde.
Sep.25 at 3:45 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
They need to rhyme and at least one out of four should be made-up.
Sep.25 at 3:51 pm
Allenp says:
I too have only seen snippets of Clyde’s game and heard about his greatness from others. In fact, I just checked out their numbers on Basketball Reference and, well by the numbers, GP had a better career. Their scoring was about equal, maybe a slight edge for GP particularly in the middle of his career when he was an utter beast. But, Payton’s assists numbers were exceptional as well. Now, that could be due to the style of game the Knicks played, but I don’t know. Both were lockdown defenders and Clyde carried the Knicks in that Willis Reed Finals and was considered their best player in his second Finals. Hmmmm, this is tough one. GP carried the Sonics once Kemp left, but he never had the team success that Clyde had. Granted, he never had the same caliber of players, but still.
Sep.25 at 3:56 pm
Bryan says:
Who knows how many steals Fraizer would have if they had been tallied back then.
Sep.25 at 3:58 pm
Allenp says:
And which list does Iverson go on? the PG list or the SG list? Top SG’s of All Time 1. Jordan 2. Kobe 3. West 4. Iverson 5. Drexler
Sep.25 at 4:00 pm
Allenp says:
Bryan, I don’t we need the steals to know that Frazier was a great defender, particularly since steals are overrated as an indicatior of good defense. But, Payton was considered by many to be the best two-way point guard in the league for much of the mid to late 90s and early 2000s.
Sep.25 at 4:02 pm
Bryan says:
Where the hell is Oscar Robertson on your lists?
Sep.25 at 4:03 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
It’s hard to compare careers by the numbers, especially when the players were from entirely different eras. I look at it that Clyde was first-team All-NBA four times, while Payton only earned that distinction twice. And Clyde was THE man on a team that won two chips. Those Knicks were team oriented, but he was the key to the whole thing, just as Bill Russell was to the Celtics.
Sep.25 at 4:05 pm
Myles Brown says:
Iverson was a 2 in my opinion, and Id certainly have to think about it before I put him at #4. It’s weird people never make SG lists.
Sep.25 at 4:06 pm
Bryan says:
Agreed.
Sep.25 at 4:06 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
Iverson would go on the shooting guard list for sure. Not sure if I put Clyde Drexler ahead of Rick Barry and Earl Monroe.

Shaq over the Captain? Nah, can’t do it Myles. And, as Bryan said, Doc was a 3 not a two. And you’re right about Barry or Pearl over Drexler, that’s a mistake on my part. But Iverson is still number four. And wasn’t Baylor a four too?

Doc was listed at basketball reference as a G-F. I went with two. I hate to bring up the whole ‘efficiency’ thing with AI, but thats why I left him off. I thought Baylor was a three, but as always, I could be wrong. I doubt that one though. Shaq over Cap was an impulse decision. Can’t really explain it, other than to say I’d take his power of Kareem’s finesse. Cousy, Moses, etc. were all great players, but who would you take off of those lists?

Myles shouldn’t that have been a post, you have a blog.

I made those lists in about five minutes without really thinking about them. Just thinking out loud, since it was being discussed. I like my blogging to be a more developed and worthwhile idea. And no less than three thousand words. I’m working on a couple of things that fit that criteria.
Sep.25 at 5:56 pm

Pistol and Bill Walton don’t make it for the same reason Hawk and Nard didn’t. Havlicek definitely bumps either Ice or Nique off the SF list, IMO.

YES! My Titans are 2-1 and we could have been 3-0. I don’t know why Marion wants this much freakin money. He should be happy with the situation he is in and should try to make the best out of it. Vince is going to be the next great in the NFL and Marion is always going to be a beneficiary of Steve Nash’s passes. He wasn’t that good in the first place without Nash, so why in the hell does he want to get paid this much? geez. play wit it.

truthismygame says:
again, i love his athletic ability on both ends of the court, the intangibles that he brings, and his general offensive efficiency (for not having to be a primary option).. but ever since these stories have been leaking out about how he feels un-loved in Phoenix, an IDEAL situation for him, despite takin the most shots & being only 3-4 mill short of having a max contract ALREADY, i’m guessing he can’t be a pleasant piece to have around the practice facility & locker room.. and on a contending squad, you have to get rid of cancers like that, sadly.. here’s to wishing that Marion figures out that if he wants a chance at a championship, he should smarter the eff up ASAP and take the 12-15 mill per year contract he deserves. and while i’m daring to dream, here’s to wishing that the Heat pull off the blockbuster trade(s) they need in order to legitimately contend again this year.. (c’mon, you can’t expect Wade to be Superman, as he’ll need to be for the current Heat squad to win, for 16 games in the playoffs)

to put perspective on marion wanting $20 a year, these are the guys who did NOT get paid $20 last year: kidd, kobe, duncan, iverson, t-mac, dirk. these guys also made more than matrix did. some guys that made LESS than his current salary: brand, amare, yao, boozer, nash, arenas, parker. dude was the 20th highest paid last year. how greedy can a mofo be when all he does his put up stats in the regular season and CHOKE big time in the playoffs, even though the other teams aren’t even focusing on him.

Pippen before Bird, this is not the white guy argument, and yes Bird had rings as a leader, but look at Pip’s supporting cast in 93-94, he murdered the league with a team built around an absent Jordan. recognize that he should have been MVP that year. I actually think Bird was great, but he had all-stars and Hall-of-Famers all around him throughout his career. And he received a love Pippen could never get. Marion is Pippenesque only in the way that Carter is Jordanesque, very pale shadow, on nights when T-Mac really locks in on D, he’s the closest to Pippen I’ve seen even though Pip himself denies the comparison. Yes, Marion was ill before Nash, but he benefitted then consistently from a great PG in Kidd, and then a good combo in Steph/Penny. watch the tape, Penny did help make his teammates better at that point. And no, he should not get 20 mil, ever.
There are, by my count, 3 Jordan-types in the L right now.
zero Pippens. Lebron himself has a skill set much closer to Pippen’s than Marion, AK, Prince, Odom, or Mac, who folks most frequently compare. I’m a Bulls guy, so I watch Deng, and to a lesser extent Thabo, and hope they can be like Pippen. maybe by the time Kobe comes. thank you, and good night.

Marion wants out of PHX. He asked for a trade. Marion has always played with a great PG. He’s never had to create his own shot. He owes half of his success to Kidd, Starbury and Nash. How can you compare Vince Young and Reggie Bush? They don’t even play the same position. If VY gets the Titans to the conference championship game, hell even the playoffs, I’ll listen. VY is Vick with charisma and a better defense.

yea, send him to NY for Lee and Balkman. Together they could grab 2-4 more than Marion and Thomas combined (if they both can fit into D’antoni’s tight rotation). Or AK47, although I dont wanna cheer him on…crying beyatch. A devoted Suns fan, but I am washing my hands clean of Matrix. Some guys just dunno how good they got it till they blow it. look at David Caruso with Law& Order for example. that ginger better be praising the CSI gods now.
As for Matrix, $20mil is for the toppa toppas, which he aint. there aint nuttin wrong with being paid more than a 2-time MVP along with the franchise player and EVERY OTHER DAMN PERSON ON YOUR TEAM! that’s without mentioning about 380 or so of the 400 in the L. greedy bastard.

I agree with most of the comments on the Matrix. He’s good but not for 20 mil. He has to be that guy that can take the heat, if they go on a losing streak instead of throwing people under the bus. He might make a good fit in the East but only if he has a great PG like Kidd. (Kidd is the truth even still if he is getting old) When it comes down to it…. whomever takes the last shot of the game on a consistent basis…that is your go to guy. I don’t see Matrix anywhere in that picture on the suns.

i dont know if it has been posted but its official that he asked to be traded, and i think they should let him go for a couple of guys that are a better fit.

And I say, ‘Al~Ready’

SLAM ONLINE | » Marion Wants Out of the Phoenix Matrix says:
[…] Citing frustration with constantly finding his name in trade rumors and the team’s refusal to discuss a contract extension, Shawn Marion went public with a trade demand as he spoke to the Arizona Republic last night. “I’m tired of hearing my name in trades,” Marion said. “I love my fans in Phoenix but I think it’s time for me to move on.” […]

I like marion and all, but he is not worth 20 million. With that said, I still hope the suns and marion work something out. Cause I cant stand to see marion playing for somebody else, then I would have to route against him, just dont seem right. Come on suns, this is the year that suns win the big one.

You guys win doesn’t suck that bad he just only threw for 12 td’s and 13 ints last year and his QB rating was 66 But wait Rex Grossman who I believe to be the worse QB in the league rating was 73.9 and he threw for 23 td’s and 20 ints It gets worse Joey Harrington rating (68) was better than VY’s and he threw for 12 td’s and 13 ints hmm… Im not a hater I just see what I see. VY is a winner but I would call him spectacular. That is just like saying Bruce Bowen is a winner when he is just adequate (and a hack might I add). Or even saying RANDY BROWN won 3 championships rings with the BULLS.

I think Shaun Marion should go somewhere like washington wizards where he could play with agent 0, or orlando magic where he could play with Dwight howard, or the Clevland Cavs where he could play with LeBron. Shaun can’t play with los angelas, they have Kobe who is a ball hogger. Or maybe you can come to the Detroit Pistons. Sincerely, brandow p.S. EAST RULEZ

Allenp says:
Uh, VY threw 12 TDs and 13 INTs in his ROOKIE season with no real rushing attack and poor receivers. That’s pretty damn special considering they went on a massive winning streak. Anybody who watches the games can see that Vince needs work as a passer, but that he has all the tools to be great.

Nasty Nate says:
Marion doesnt need to be paired with a superstar he just needs to go somewhere where he will be appreciated. Where he can just play stellar basketball that he is capable of doing.

i would love to pick up David Lee but the Knicks have called him untouchable quite a few times, and the salaries are about 15 mill off which means the Suns would have to take on a whole boatload of crap in the Jerome James range as well.. eugh..
