Isiah on Who (and Who Can’t) Call Women ‘B*tches’
Before his disastrous tenure with the Knicks began, long before running the CBA into the ground, and even before he embarrassed himself and the entire Pistons organization by walking off the floor without shaking hands with the Bulls (who had just swept them) in the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals, Isiah Thomas was infamous for one other stupid gaffe: After losing to the Celtics in the ‘87 Playoffs, Thomas came out and said that if Larry Bird - irrefutably, one of the greatest players to ever lace up a pair of sneakers - was a black man, he’d be known as just another good player, not an all-time great.
Well, guess what folks, Zeke is once again running his mouth and edutaining us on the nuances of race and the liberal use of the word “bitch”.
He was back in the courtroom yesterday (where he’s facing sexual harassment charges) and the Daily News has the details of a videotaped deposition starring Isiah which was played for the jury:
Asked if he was bothered by a black man calling a black female “bitch,” Thomas said: “Not as much. I’m sorry to say, I do make a distinction.”
“A white male calling a black female a bitch is highly offensive,” Thomas said. “That would have violated my code of conduct.”
“Maybe I shouldn’t go there. … A white male calling a black female, that is wrong with me. I’m not taking that. I’m not accepting that … That’s a problem for me.”
I only have one question here: Can Isiah do so much damage to himself and whoever has the misfortune of gainfully employing him that, regardless of all that he accomplished on the basketball court, he eventually gets himself kicked out of the Hall of Fame? At this point, I’m only sort of kidding.

Correction Ryan, Isiah Thomas was really great at basketball and better than Scott Layden at being a GM. His logic does suck though about the word bitch. However, his comments about Larry Bird, while wrong, made sense when you consider that the level of praise heaped on Bird was greater because he was white. He was undoubtly the best small forward of all time, but he still was treated differently by people who related to him because of his color.

to be honest isiah has a point, to an extent. minorities have a history of mothers being the head of the household (sometimes being the only one) so the word bitch is met with some disparity, BUT! at the same time the word gets used so much in our own conversations that it becomes second nature (which is saddening due to my first point). but i dont know, based on what ive read this “trial” is laughable at best.

I didn’t know you could get convicted in the court of public opinion. Where does that court meet again, and what are the rules of conduct? And your response to my comments about the context of comments was way, way off base. Simply put, certain people can say things to other people and it’s not offensive. People within racial groups often use deragotary terms for each other that they are not comfortable with outsiders using. Women call each other bithces and don’t like it when men do it. Homosexuals have co-opted two deragatory terms related to them and use them at their discretion. It happens in every segment of society, yet people seem to be bothered the most by it if it happens with black folks. That’s why there was very little debate over Isiah Washington’s firing for using a deragatory slur for homosexuals, but there was a national ruckucs when Don Imus used racially charged words and was fired. People act like blacks get some special pass that nobody else receives and that’s just not the case.

Riggs I have to disagree with the Isiah comments because almost everywhere you go in the world the mother is usually the head of the household at least in the eyes of the children because if the dad is in the picture at all he’s usually the breadwinner and has less(in some cases) with the day to day running of the family,other than the threat of your mother telling your father which is terrifying.Its old fashioned logic,but it’s what I experienced.

As a Celtics fan I’m always up for a little Isiah hate. However, I’m also scrupulously fair and have to correct a bit of misinformation in the article. The remarks that are being attributed to Isiah as regards Larry Bird were not uttered by Isiah, but by Dennis Rodman. Isiah was asked about them directly after and made an ironic echo of the Worm’s tirade (in fact, if you read his words he said exactly the opposite while agreeing with Rowdy Rodman). He was trying to make a larger point about how the game of basketball was covered by the media, and how individual players were perceived. His point being that the American media wouldn’t give Bird his just due if he were African-American rather than that Bird was overhyped because of his pigmentation. See the whole Magic v. Bird era for reference. It was always portrayed as “Magic the athlete” vs. “Bird’s skills” despite the fact that neither players was particularly athletic in the Michael Jordan run/jump manner. Magic may have been better than Bird at the run/jump stuff, but not enough to really make a difference. His strength was always between his ears and his head for the game (just like Bird). Ultimately Thomas’ biggest mistake was in assuming that the drunken, middle-aged, white reporters standing in front of him were intelligent enough to understand what he was saying and report them fairly. Because, in the end, the empty talking heads won, his point forgotten, and his words spun into Worm’s to make them mean something different (leaving him holding the bag for Rodman’s less temperate remarks).

First, that quote is incoherent and obviously edited to seem incoherent. Isaih is unprofessional for calling a subordinate out of her name, nothing else. She should have quit or sued as soon as she was called out her name, not after she was fired. It doesn’t make him an idiot or any less of a team president. As far as Bird being the greatest small forward of all time. I’d prefer to say he had the best career in the nba as a small forward. Rick Barry was better. Dr. J was better. The “if Bird was black” argument is about as pointless as when people said that if Isaih was five inches taller he’d be called the greatest of all time. It’s unmeasurable.
