Greg Oden Is Done; Blazer fans on Suicide Watch

by Marcel Mutoni

Tough break for the Blazers and their rookie big man: According to Yahoo! Sports, Oden is to miss the entire ‘07-’08 season following exploratory knee surgery.

Here’s what Oden’s doctor had to say about the matter:

“Greg had an arthroscopy and a micro fracture surgery today,” said team physician Dr. Don Roberts, who preformed the surgery. “He was found to have articular cartilage damage in his right knee. The area of injury was not large and we were able to treat it with micro fracture, which stimulates the growth of cartilage.

There are things about this that are positive for Greg. First of all he is young. The area where the damage was is small and the rest of his knee looked normal. All those are good signs for a complete recovery from micro fracture surgery.”

It usually takes between six to twelve months to recover from micro fracture surgery.

“We believe our fans and sponsors are going to continue to support us because they know we’re headed in the right direction”, said Trail Blazers President Larry Miller.

In other words, this is the new Blazer slogan: ‘We’re Gonna Be SO Awesome in 2009!’

Sampson was a three-time All Star, so that’s a good model for Oden.

Kevin Wilson says:
So does Durant get every vote for ROY?

Sep.13 at 2:22 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
His surgery was performed by a team of paleontologists from the Museum of Natural History.

Sep.13 at 2:22 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Kevin: We should probably wait until he plays some actual NBA games before the votes are counted.

Sep.13 at 2:24 pm

mutoni says:
i’m guessing one of those paleontologists was ross geller.

Sep.13 at 2:26 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Would this be a poor time for Isiah Thomas to call the Blazers and gloat?

Sep.13 at 2:28 pm

white hot eboy says:
An email to GO saying “How you doin?” would probably be innapropriate too.

Sep.13 at 2:30 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Did he get hurt trying to get into Darius Miles’s car?

Count me among the minions who will place a little more faith in this when it is announced by all of the mainstream sports media outlets. If true, that sucks for the Blazers and the NBA, but can only help the Lakers.

Is it at all possible that Oden knew about this injury prior to the draft?

Bodie, classy. Help’s them what, win 4 games against the Blazers in the season series, not 3?

Sep.13 at 2:44 pm

ugh…can he be up for ROY next year?

Sep.13 at 2:45 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Do this mean that Portland is now joining the O.J. Mayo sweepstakes?

Sep.13 at 2:45 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Yikes. It’s up on ESPN, and they used the dreaded “m” word.

Sep.13 at 2:47 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
By “dreaded ‘m’ word” I meant “mutoni,” who already updated this. Damn you! *shakes fist*

Sep.13 at 2:48 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And yes, if Oden misses all of this season, he’ll be eligible for Rookie of the Year next season.

Sep.13 at 2:53 pm

nick says:
As a Houstonian, my Ralph Sampson sense is tingling.

Sep.13 at 2:54 pm

Russ, so think of the laughs we’ll have in 2 years if Oden AND Durant win ROYs.

Sep.13 at 2:54 pm

orteezy says:
oj mayo…greg oden…co-ROY…hmmm…

Sep.13 at 2:56 pm

Anthony Verna says:
BTW, what if Portland stinks it up this year and gets Mayo?

Sep.13 at 2:57 pm

jbn74sb says:
Not just head-to-head matchups eboy. Not that anything would be guaranteed with him, but Portland aint in the playoffs without Oden.

Sep.13 at 2:58 pm

jbn74sb says:
I had the same thought, Anthony.

Sep.13 at 2:59 pm

Paniscus says:
Pass the razors and Coumadin.

Sep.13 at 3:01 pm

Heri says:
Can’t believe how unlucky this franchise is. This season is basically over for them…Note for upcoming talented healthy centers: don’t ever sign with the Blazers.

Sep.13 at 3:03 pm

mutoni says:
portland is already going to be a good team WITHOUT oden. tough for them to get the first pick in next year’s draft.

Sep.13 at 3:06 pm

dma says:
Beasley/Mayo + Oden Maybe they’ll tie for ROY next year.

Sep.13 at 3:06 pm

Kihwan says:
WOW!!!! Microfracture, uh-oh.

Sep.13 at 3:10 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Seriously. I wouldn’t be writing the Blazers’s obituary just yet. Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, Channing Frye, Martell Webster, Jarrett Jack–they could still be pretty good.

Sep.13 at 3:11 pm

jbn74sb says:
Not in the West they won’t, unless Miles really is ready to contribute, as some of the reports indicate. If they still had Randolph, maybe.

Sep.13 at 3:12 pm

mutoni says:
ewing theory time for portland, b*tches!

Sep.13 at 3:13 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Miles ready to contribute? Hahaha. Contribute what?

Sep.13 at 3:14 pm

mutoni says:
weed, russ. weed.

Sep.13 at 3:17 pm

jbn74sb says:
Miles has apparently been working out like mad, and has lost close about 30 pounds. No word on whether or not he also found a jump shot. If healthy, he’d get minutes on most NBA teams, just running the floor.

Sep.13 at 3:34 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
I want to get something cleared up. With both Oden and Amare, did they wake up to find out the doctors had already preformed microfracture, or do they do the scope and then discuss and go from there? My friend who played with the articular damage obviously did not get microfracture as it was the last season to be played, but in the case of an older player do they have options other than microfracture surgery? Do they ever do the scope, clear out the torn cartilage and not drill the holes to promote the regrowth? Besides learning to live with the limitations of the pain/popping/grinding/swelling is there an option for cartilage damage such as this other than the dreaded microfracture or is that the last resort?

Sep.13 at 3:38 pm

jbn74sb says:
I imagine it depends on age and circumstance, Holly. If young, healthy and making millions to play, you get the microfracture. Short term suffering is way worse, but long term prognosis is perhaps better. For you average 33 year old weekend warrior, such as myself, you just live with some knee pain. Mind you, I’m a lawyer, not a doctor, so what do I know…

Sep.13 at 3:41 pm

nick says:
Mutoni, Blazers fans probably need that more then a shotless swingman right now, particularly since they can no longer just get it from Mighty Mouse’s glovebox.

Sep.13 at 3:48 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
Thats what I was thinking as well JB. Just was wondering if there were any other options etc.

Sep.13 at 3:57 pm

Gerard Himself says:
I thought last season was an injury plagued season, but if this is an indication for upcoming season….
Regardless, and a NBA fan, this is bad news. Hope he’ll recover 100%.

Sep.13 at 4:00 pm

Rasheedionics says:
Where’s Zach Randolph… damn… at least they got Steve Blake back.

Sep.13 at 4:01 pm

Dallas J says:
Blazers fans don’t need a suicide watch. They need a crappy season and another #1 pick next year.
Or they could be semi-decent and have back to back #1’s anyway - a-la 92′ 93′ Magic with shaqfu and penny

Sep.13 at 4:04 pm

jbn74sb says:
Orlando didn’t draft Penny. They drafted Webber.

Sep.13 at 4:10 pm

Dallas J says:
haha.. yea yea..you know what i mean

Sep.13 at 4:13 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Could always be worse–look what happened to Barbaro.

Sep.13 at 4:15 pm

jbn74sb says:
I do, but everyone forgets that Webber was drafted #1 overall by the Magic and then traded to GS for Penny and 3 future first round picks. Pretty wild deal when you think about it.

Sep.13 at 4:17 pm

Andre green says:
He now has time to wokr on his entire game, because Oden was going to be abused by every big man in the L, what he did in high school and at OSU were agianst smaller players. Like he’s shown in the NCAA tournament and summer league agianst tall men he gets tired makes silly fouls so he’s gets more practice. PS i’m willing to bet year salary for salary Durant WILL NOT BE R.O.Y. He’s now the biggest rookie target palying for a whack team. Hell game time even the too emotional AK47 will put up 24pts on Durant wihile holding him to 15 learn basketball 1st players..er.. playa’a er.. bloggers

Sep.13 at 4:21 pm

James says:
I’m in a library and when I just read this I loudly exclaimed “What????” and people stared. I’m surrounded by international students anyway so no one gets it… But damn. Imagine if this happened to Lebron his rookie year with $100 million in endorsements.

Sep.13 at 4:35 pm

Chris O says:
No one is more upset about the loss of Oden than Bill Walton. And I mean no one. In the history of Western civilization. You might as well run a John Wooden scissor cut through the big guy’s heart.

Sep.13 at 4:36 pm

jbn74sb says:
Andre must have missed this year’s title game, in which Oden dominated inside against 2 lottery picks, while playing left handed. Nitwits sure are entertaining…

Sep.13 at 4:37 pm

H to the izzo says:
Has this been confirmed yet?

Sep.13 at 4:39 pm

Dan says:
This all seems a little too strange to me. I mean, there is clearly more to this than meets the eye. Perhaps a similar story to that of Vladamir Radmonovic during All-Star break. . . . ?

Sep.13 at 4:42 pm

albie1kenobi says:
is microfracture now the rite of passage for young big men? it’s like they killed their cartilege before they even get into the league.

Sep.13 at 4:43 pm

white hot eboy says:
Oden was going to be the dominate force in the Western Conference within 5 years. With the injury, that’s pushed back to 2013.

Sep.13 at 4:47 pm

Lang Whitaker says:
It’s too bad Portland’s never before drafted an injury-prone center over one of the best scorers in college basketball. Because then this injury would be sort of ironic.

Sep.13 at 4:48 pm

jbn74sb says:
Or at least a dominant force. Lakers fans have their fingers crossed that Bynum will continue to drop step and dunk on the ghost of Shaq.

Sep.13 at 4:49 pm

jbn74sb says:
First time for everything, Lang.

Sep.13 at 4:52 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Seems a bit premature to call him injury-prone, doesn’t it? I understand that he’s missed a lot of time, but none of the injuries have been of the chronic variety. A broken wrist, tonsillitis, and now the knee. Nothing repeated. Oden’s about as Bowie-like as Amare Stoudemire.

Sep.13 at 4:56 pm

H to the izzo says:
I hope SLAM won’t distance themselves from Greg like Bassy and Mike Dunleavy

Sep.13 at 4:57 pm

jbn74sb says:
No, it’s fair to call him injury prone.

Sep.13 at 4:57 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
We only distanced ourselves from Bassy because he always seemed to be armed.

Sep.13 at 4:58 pm

Courtking12 says:
Conspiracy?! Blazers for 1st pick in 2008 draft? can u say dynasty?

Sep.13 at 5:00 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I disagree, Bodie, but that’s what America is all about. He’s had TWO injuries in two years. A broken wrist and the knee. I don’t consider tonsillitis an “injury.” My definition of injury prone is a guy like Allan Houston or Shawn Bradley–someone who consistently breaks down with a similar problem that never really goes away. GO seems to be more “accident prone” than anything. In the future perhaps he should sleep standing up like a flamingo and avoid sitting down at all costs.

Sep.13 at 5:00 pm

H to the izzo says:
And distance yourselves from Mike because he try and come on to you

Sep.13 at 5:04 pm

sefos says:
is a damn shame…

Sep.13 at 5:09 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Actually, we were just scared of Li’l Dun’s face.

Sep.13 at 5:11 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Where’s the columnist taking the angle “Oden should have stayed in school?”

Sep.13 at 5:12 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Am I the only one who thinks “exploratory knee surgery” is a ridiculous term? I can’t help but think of a mustachioed doctor in a pith helmet hacking away vines and referring to an ancient map. I mean, the knee’s what, three inches square? Four? How much “exploring” can really be involved?

Sep.13 at 5:13 pm

H to the izzo says:
J.A Adande should produce that any minute now

Sep.13 at 5:14 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And staying in school would have been the worst thing ever. Not only would he possibly had to pay for his own surgery, but the repaired knee would have been a big red X on his draft physical next year. If anything, this is why guys should enter the draft ASAFP.

Sep.13 at 5:20 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Bill Walker knows that, Russ.

Sep.13 at 5:20 pm

Tom says:
So this might sound dumb, but… I thought I read somewhere that Oden actually has one leg that is slightly shorter than the other. Is that true? Does that have any effect on the injury?

Sep.13 at 5:21 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Although Bill didn’t have a choice. Thanks, David Stern.

Sep.13 at 5:24 pm

truthismygame says:
somehow i had a feeling this would happen.. i jus hope the fans in Portland don’t get down on him before he ever even plays in an NBA game.. having watched several of his college games, he def still has freaky athletic ability, so if he recovers fully (as he should), he’ll still have a pretty decent NBA career.. i know he probably feels pretty terrible right now, but at least he’s got millions and millions of dollars from endorsement deals that are already inked to make him feel better as he works to get back.. and while we’re on the topic of big dollars going to “promising” big men with no return, what’s Bryant Reeves up to these days? a lot of crappy stuff happened to that franchise while it was in Vancouver, but as a hometown fan at the time, you have no idea how much i wanted to kill that 7-foot stiff after he conveniently retired with “health problems that would prevent him from ever playing again” after making over 50 mill.

maybe its a blessing in disguise. maybe his limitation as an athlete will make him work on his skills. a TD-like bank shot for example. or a decent hook shot. or instead of jumping to block every ball, maybe work on his help defense a bit. I am just trying to make things better… I know..

Lets be real here, theres no way Portland was gonna make any noyz this year in the west. In fact this is a good thing for the franchise because now that they are going to have a dissapointing season at least they still got hope because Oden wasnt there. If they somehow do OK, then again they can be optimistic about next season. This is win-win in a lose-lose situation.

I’m gonna play the optimist for a sec. A 2009 Blazers lineup of Oden, Aldridge, Outlaw, Roy and Mayo/Gordon/Rose with Frye, McRoberts, Webster, Rodiguez and Jack coming off the bench all with an extra year of seasoning looks mighty nice to me, you’ll just have to wait through another 27-55 season. Besides, while the Blazers are priming, the Spurs/Rockets/Mavs/Suns etc get a year older. Meanwhile a Aldridge/Frye/Ghostface combo upfront just might work!

Sep.14 at 2:13 am

RV says:
He does have one leg shorter than the other, but i think thats not as uncommon as people think. I don’t think its like 3 inches shorter, probably just a bit, i don’t think it would have caused the injury and he probably has a corrective sole.

Sep.14 at 2:15 am

RV says:
Also, one of the Yahoo! stories mentioned Oden’s predraft physicals showed some problems with his knees or something like that, so i guess Portland had to know there was a chance something like this would happen

SLAM ONLINE | » Draft Do Over? says:
[…] NBA teams are so enamored with seven footers that they’ll do anything to get their hands on them. This includes ignoring tell-tell signs that the big man in question may not be 100% healthy. According to a few NBA execs, this is what happened in Portland prior to the draft. From Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski (who broke the story of Oden’s season-ending injury): “From our (trainers and doctors), there were red flags everywhere,” an Eastern Conference executive said. “It wouldn’t have stopped us from drafting him but it would’ve probably made us pause about making a deal to move up and get him,” he said. I got an email about the Oden thing to my Sidekick and immediately called Mutoni’s cell to get him to post something. He texted me back that he was posting something pronto.
