Could David Stern Be Fired?

The League won’t deny that some of its refs have gambled in casinos. A NY Post story is suggesting that David Stern (due to terms of his contract) could be fired if he has evidence that a ref gambled.

As much as I think that Stern was generally a good GM and a superb one business one a new direction for the NBA would be nice, never gonna happen though

David Stern is like Alberto Gonzales… The only person that can fire him… is himself.

I’d have to agree with H to the Izzo here. Overall, I liked Stern…until about 2 years ago. Get the man a rocking chair and a Mallomar and get him away from the game.

I can understand that these allegations are very incriminating and may largely effect the NBA’s reputation, but there is no way David Stern is going to be fired. The NY Post likes to stir up controversey. End of story. Although this has been a summer of serious blows for American sports; the gambling with NBA referees, Michael Vick’s dogfighting, and the supposed “illegitement” breaking of the home run record. The media is having a hey-day dragging names through the mud!

For all of those who are in favour of firing David Stern, I would like to hear viable reasons as to why he should be fired, as well as an adequate replacement for him. . .

Mo Daddy says:
viable reason? how about devaluing the integrity of the game. rule changes to favor a certain type of player, sanctions against a style of dress…these things help with sponsors yeah, but ignore the real fanbase, the ones that keep the league running year after year.

Mo Charlo says:
Who is Mo Daddy? Anyways, there was once a time when SLAM referred to him as the best commissioner in professional sports. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

Aug.21 at 6:35 pm

Dan says:
Mo Daddy, you must be joking. I don’t think “sanctions against a style of dress” qualify for firing such an integeral part of the NBA. And these rule changes you bring up are completely nonsensical. That completely contradicts your theory on the “true fans” who keep this league running. If the rules weren’t changed to facilitate a faster-paced game for players like Kobe, Gilbert, etc. do you really think those same fans would be around? I highly doubt it. I don’t see why you are jumping on the NY Post bandwagon. You have absolutely no grounds to even begin to suggest that Stern be fired. What about the changes Stern has made that have and will vastly improve the NBA?

I kinda do think we need a new commish..or mayb i jus want 1.

Aug.21 at 9:00 pm

Mo Daddy says:
yes i actually am a hundred percent sure those same fans were around. the 80’s and 90’s were when the leagues popularity was at an all time high. the no hand checking rule definitely took away from defense. the dress code is something more NCAA than NBA. Stern has been a great commish, just in the past 6 or 7 years he’s really watered down the product that is the League. NY Post bandwagon?? Ive been suggesting Stern be replaced to all my friends since the Palace Brawl. I know for a fact that all those who enjoy watching and playing the sport of basketball will always watch the NBA. true fans of the game.

Mo Daddy says:
Mo Charlo, I like your name. Lol, my real names Mohammed, but i like to go by Mo Daddy in this forum. hope you dont mind.

Aug.21 at 9:04 pm

Dan says:
I think you misunderstood what I said Mo Daddy. I acknowledge the fact that fans of the game in the ’80’s and ’90’s are still fans today. What I am saying is that some of the new, or adjusted, rules that Stern has implemented have drawn a different type of fan to the game. He has done many good things for this league, whether you believe it or not. You do understand that this is a bussiness to him more than it is a sport, right? These desicions he has made that you apparently don’t agree with are, for the most part, made from a business standpoint. His job is to make money!

i actually misread the ny post story this morning when i posted this. it’s not david stern’s job which is at risk, it’s the ref’s (if it’s found out that he bet; a violation of the ref’s contract.). the lesson as always: i don’t know how to read. good night!

Aug.21 at 11:01 pm

Dan says:
That correction is actually much appreciated, the main reason simply being the lack of sense all of this made. If the original idea were true, then any referee who did not like David Stern could simply go out and gamble in the public eye. You see, that would have put David Stern’s position as NBA commissioner in the hands of others, which would have made his job far too much like an NBA coach’s. And we all know how much job security is prevelant in such a position. I knew Stern was smarter than that!

Aug.21 at 11:02 pm

Dan says:
By the way, does anyone still feel as though Stern should be fired? Or did all of that ill-will dissapate as a result of hearing the truth?

So new rules are responsible for attracting fans to the game? These same “fans” are the ones who change the channel because the score is fewer than eighty in the fourth quarter although the game could be basketball orchestrated at its finest. Theses same “fans” are the ones who ignore a player’s off-court charity because his shirt isn’t chocking his Adams apple. I understand that being commissioner is the hardest job in the league, but david stern is NOT AT ALL responsible foe the leagues success. Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Isaiah Thomas, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Dominique Wilkins, Hakeem Olajuwon Jason Kidd, Gary Payton, Patrick Ewing, and dozens of other great players are responsible for the leagues success. And in spite of david stern’s rigorous attempts to leave the game crippled, the great modern players of today have kept it alive.

Lew b. Money says:
no, david “d1ckhead” stern will not be fired, but it is a better idea than changing the ball from proven leather to kmart synthetic, or keeping players ready for the nba OUT of the nba,….

Aug.22 at 4:40 pm

Mo Daddy says:
David Stern has quite simply f*cked up the past 10 years or so. the rules that Stern implemented are useless.

Swizz Beatz says:
Who can fire him? The government?

Aug.22 at 11:58 pm

Dan says:
Sorry I’m late guys, but I am concerned at both Mo Daddy AND Lew b. Money’s lack of knowledge and common sense. Lew, you truly feel as though rule changes can’t bring in more fans? So the addition of the three-point line must have made the game much worse, because last time I checked that was a change in the NBA’s rules. Similarly, the shot clock was an addition to the game that made it more fast-paced and entertaining, but surely that didn’t impress fans and fans to be. And how has Stern “f*cked up the last ten years”? Because he disallowed kids fresh from their proms to enter the league? Is Shaun Livingston not a reasonable enough example as to why kids should at least begin a college education before going pro? His career could very well be over, and by the time his money could potentially run out, he may never consider a post-secondary education. But I am sorry. You two MUST know what you are talking about.

Aug.23 at 12:33 am

Dan says:
Oh, and the explanation for those low scores is called defense. Although offense draws more fans, a “true” fan like you, Lew b., must appreciate defense. Then again, what do I know?
