Breaking News: Eddie Griffin Is Dead
RIP: 1982-2007
There will be much more about this in the days ahead, but I heard today that troubled former Houston Rocket/New Jersey Nets/Minnesota T-Wolves forward Eddie Griffin died last Friday. Just spoke to someone else who told me the body was identified by police today.
I’ve heard a few stories about exactly how it happened but couldn’t confirm anything.
Most recently he was working out in Houston with Hawks forward Josh Smith.
Eddie Griffin was 25 years old.

May he finally ‘REST IN PEACE’! No one knows what this person was going through. It apparently looks like he might have been running from something. That is why we shouldn’t pass judgement. My heart goes out to his family. Such a young talented individual maybe now, finally at peace. As for you THE BIG LEAD, you really need to ‘proofread your words’ before sending it out!!!! And you, Danny W UK, how do you know he was smoking weed and when was the last time you went to ‘YOUR DENTIST’!!! “EDDIE GRIFFIN, MAY GOD BE WITH YOU!!!!!!”

Lang, this crash happened literally blocks from where i live, it was last friday, and reports were he drove his car into a moving train well after several railroad cars had passed. Its very sad news, but I have to wonder what he was doing in this area. There’s nothing to see or do around here, nothing but neighborhoods, a predominantly mexican-american area, low to middle class, last place you’d expect to see a millionaire ball player. Add the fact that he wasn’t carrying any ID, and you have to think he just wanted to disappear..i’ll try to find the original story

trasean3 says:
It’s sad because there is ‘rumor’ that his brother committed suicide years earlier. So I can’t imagine what his mother is going through, if it did happen, losing two sons to ’suicide?’ The NBA, media, etc. is very much to blame!! They recruit ‘young talent’ then, literally, throw them to the wolves. How do you expect some of these up and coming young stars to nurtur if there isn’t constant monitoring of these individuals who probably never had much growing up? Fame, fortune and glory, is the real killer here…

seems pretty confirmed. i just found this on the internet. The Harris County Medical Examiner’s office has identified former Rockets power forward Eddie Griffin as the man who died when the SUV he was driving plowed into a moving train in southeast Houston last week. Officials said Griffin, 25, drove his Nissan SUV through a railroad crossing barrier, past flashing warning lights and into a moving train in the 5300 block of Lawndale about 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 17. The accident remains under investigation by Houston police. Griffin’s vehicle burst into flames on impact with the Union Pacific train that was hauling plastic, burning his body so badly that investigators had to use dental records from a Houston dentist whom Griffin had visited to confirm his identity Tuesday. A ruling on the cause of death and manner of death and the results of drug and alcohol tests on the remains are pending. Griffin, whom the Rockets acquired for three first-round draft picks in 2001, faced off-court troubles throughout his NBA career. A power forward, he was released by the Rockets in 2003 after several run-ins with the law. He spent time in the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., for alcoholism treatment in 2003-04. He played briefly in New Jersey for the Nets before moving to Minnesota to play for the Timberwolves, who waived him in March. “If this is true, then Eddie is free now,'’ said former Rockets guard and NBA coach John Lucas, who worked with Griffin in Lucas’ Houston-based substance rehabilitation program. “I’m just sad. Just so sad.'’ Rockets spokesman Nelson Luis said Griffin was trying hard to get his life back together after he left the Rockets. “All the potential, all the dreams his family had for him for what his career would and could be, to see it end like this is just tragic,” Luis said. “He was a very quiet, introverted kid. But you could tell there was a current of trouble underneath the surface with him. It’s a shame.'’ Griffin had “all the ability in the world,'’ but his talent and youth was wasted, said Keith Jones, the Rockets trainer and vice president of basketball operations. “I don’t think Eddie was bad people,” Jones said. ‘’Some people are just troubled. Eddie had his share of troubles. … He had some issues he couldn’t get through.” Chosen as the seventh overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft, Griffin averaged 8.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game during his first two seasons with the Rockets. Funeral arrangements are pending. “Eddie was like a manchild. He was a wonderful, gentle soul, but he was an alcoholic. Alcohol always got in the way. The one thing the Rockets didn’t know and none of us knew was the extent of the problem. It’s really tragic,'’ said Rusty Hardin, Griffin’s attorney. Griffin left college after one season with Seton Hall. “I don’t think he was prepared for that (the NBA) at 19. … All the city got to know of him was that we gave up (three first-round picks) for this guy, and he isn’t cutting it,'’ said Hardin, a regular in the prime seats at Rockets games. “That’s true, but he had some demons going, and everybody knew that.'’ Griffin was suspended by the NBA for five games in January for violating its anti-drug program. “Basketball was never an issue with him. He needed more life lessons, and unfortunately he was never able to reach his potential,'’ former Timberwolves coach Dwane Casey told the Associated Press.

This is sad. Another young dude lost forever because of poor choices. As young Black men in America, we MUST make better choices. Pac Man Jones, Mike Vick, Tank Johnson, Andray Blatche, Bryan Pata, and now Eddie Griffin, are all examples of everything we should’nt do. I can’t say that I haven’t made mistakes, nor do I want to sound like I’m condemning people, but if we are to progress as a whole, this is the stuff that we must overcome. This is just so sad. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones. R.I.P.

He declared for the draft because his half-brother had died of a crack addiction, leaving a wife and two children. He felt he needed to provide for the family. He was not ready for the NBA. This isn’t about black men making poor choices. It’s about addiction. I just had a friend, a middle aged white guy, kill himself in a very public manner. He was addicted to alcohol as well. Addiction kills, the age and race are insignificant.

This may be selfish of me, but I’m kind of pissed at this guy. I was one of many who was truly rooting for this guy. Played with him on NBA 2K6-7 and all that. I usually never root for players with off the field/court troubles. Not even AI. But for some reason I wanted Eddie Griffin to succeed in the NBA. I remember walking by him at a nightclub in Houston, TX a couple of years ago. He was alone, with no visible jewelry on and walking among the people as though he were not of a different status than the average patron. Understandably he made no effort to mingle. For some reason I thought his behavior would improve. But oh well, I guess he lived his life the way he wanted; not the way his fans wanted him to live…RIP man.

Last incident everyone was laughing about him masturbating and crashing his car, whilst drunk. Even a nickname thread, Eddie Grippin anyone remember? Now that he’s died everyone talks like he was an angel, pillar of the community. The guy was an alcoholic, drug user. Who beat and shot at his wife, and spent 11 days in prison. Danny, everyone who knew him said the same thing, he was a nice and quiet guy, who kept to himself, but he suffered from depression and addiction to alcohol, which caused him to make those bad decisions, Mike James (i think) also said something about the people around him (fam i guess) treating him like crap…so his only real problem was not knowing how to cope properly because he never asked for help until it was too late

Spent some time in Philly myself and it’s a rough place. I can definitely see his family being rough on him, constantly having their hands out, looking at him as a way out (I don’t know his family’s economic standing, but a brother who was a crackhead tends to make me think it wasn’t exactly Bala Cynwood Philly… That’s gotta put a lot of pressure on a kid at an early age. Remember, people knew of him waaay back in the day, so he was dealing w/ the pressure of having to be good enough to make the NBA and/in order to feed his family before he was dealing w/ the pressure of who to take to junior prom. Some guys deal well with that kind of early pressure (LeBron) while it encompases and eventually destroys others…

Griffin was about to make one of the biggest decisions of his life and his brother - one of the most important figures in his life - was gone “With Marvin passing on and knowing he was never going to see me play in the NBA, that was tough for me. R.I.P. Eddie Griffin I remember watching him play at Seton Hall and noticing the great potential he had. Unfortunately, as we all know, he did not live up to his potential on the court. He did have his shortcomings on and off the court as they have all been publicized, but at the same time he was a man like any other and should be respected even now after his untimely passing.
So ‘THE BIG LEAD’, I resent your earlier comments and will like to state that although he might not have been a model human/citizen in your book, he may have meant the world to someone else.
