Arenas Is Not Impressed By RJ’s Generosity
Richard Jefferson recently performed a very noble deed: He donated $3.5 million to his alma mater, the University of Arizona. The money will be used to help finance a new practice facility, and Jefferson will have the option of slapping his name on the building.
This past weekend, a bunch of guys who played for Lute Olson at the U of A (Miles Simon-yes, he’s alive!-, Gilbert Arenas, Richard Jefferson, and Jason Terry, just to name a few) met up for a run.
Gil, who had taken a few playful shots at his former college teammate in his latest blog post, let the world know what he thinks of Jefferson’s enormous donation to the school after the game:
“He had to put his name on the gym because no one was going to remember him,” Arenas said. “I told him that seven out of 10 people don’t remember what jersey he wore.”
Brutal.

“Seven out of 10.” I love that. Instead of just saying “most,” Gilbert gave an actual number. This implies he actually did the research. I believe he probably did.

I don’t think it’s necessarily “PC” - it’s just trying to appeal to as many people as possible and offending as little people as possible - but maybe we’re talking about the same thing.

Joel O's says:
Honestly, this is getting a bit trying. Gilbert’s got more than enough of the spotlight on him… I love his game, and I love his attitude in general. But shouldn’t he let RJ have his shine? I know this is a bit harsh, but this constant “chip on the shoulder” thing is getting a bit old, a bit trying. Gilbert’s made it, sorta, so it’s all good for him. And he was once the underdog, so he knows how it feels to have to claw his way to the top. BUT now that he’s up there, am I the only one who feels that he’s become somewhat of a bully?
Aug.21 at 2:31 pm
Joel O's says:
Trying to stealing RJ’s thunder this week is one example. Another is the shooting competition he had with fellow uhh gunner Deshawn Stevenson; 20K means a hell of a lot more to Deshawn than it does to Gilbert, and if we recall, Gilbert did EVERYTHING he could possible do to distract Stevenson so he could win the 20K.
Aug.21 at 2:33 pm
Tariq says:
I don’t know…I like Gilbert. He may not always act the right way, but who does? At least he seems to be himself.
Aug.21 at 2:41 pm
Joel O's says:
I know… it’s hard not to like Gilbert Arenas. His antics on and off the court were a highlight of last season, and the East was way more interesting and competitive before he and Caron went down. He’s always interesting when he’s in the limelight, and always has something witty to say, which I enjoy thoroughly as long as it doesn’t come at someone else’s expense: spoiling RJ’s moment, and doing whatever he could to beat Deshawn Stevenson of money which means a lot more to Deshawn than himself… funny while these things are, they also border on being just plain mean.
Aug.21 at 2:47 pm
Joel O's says:
I’ll draw a military analogy here: remember in Band Of Brothers when an officer was gambling with the men, and the Damian Lewis character (CPT/LTA Winters) tells him off for it? As an officer, you should never take anything more away from your men - they’re worse paid, and bound by duty to follow your orders to the death; the last thing you should be doing is gambling with them, because if you happen to win, how can you take their money from them without inspiring hate?
Aug.21 at 2:50 pm
Tariq says:
Well, it’s not like Deshawn Stevenson and Richard Jefferson are strangers to Gil. “Mr. 50″ is one of Arenas’s best friends on the team, so I would think that Deshawn doesn’t mind this sort of thing from him. And RJ went to college with him. If Gil had done something like this to someone he barely knows, then it would be different. But it’s difficult to judge actions between two people if you don’t know the nature of their friendships. On another note, to paraphrase Tarzan, “zzzzzzzzzzzz”.

If you read Gilberts blog on NBA.com he says that him and Richard Jefferson are always competing with one another.Only thing is that Gilert has so much more game then Richard Jefferson(better J,better handle etc.)Gilbert can back his “better then you” claims with better statistics and skill then Jefferson can.

JB21 says:
ALSO, if you read Gilberts blog on NBA.com you will see that A) Mr Fitty was doing the same things to Gilly but it was edited out, and B) Agent Zero never made his boy pay him. He just wanted to shut up Deshawn b/c he was getting a big head recently. He made his teammates sign waivers to talk to him, and nobody was allowed to talk to him if they weren’t shooting 50% or higher.

illydiva says:
Question: how much money has he donated to his high school? Why do so many star athletes give millions to their already wealthy colleges, when the primary schools are the ones that struggle in this country? Just asking. Very generous of him no doubt, but which/who would benefit more from that kind of money?
Aug.22 at 2:14 pm
Jordi Scrubbings says:
illydiva,
I think the reason is because colleges ask for money, make a big deal about donations, and they have better programs for receiving money. And I would think if you went to a public school, the money would be divvied up to all the schools in the district. I could be wrong. But I do like your thinking.
