Allan Houston Is Old, Wants to Make a Comeback
Why?
What’s with all of these geezers wanting another shot at playing in the League?
First it was Reggie Miller, and now another former sharpshooter thinks he can still hack it in the NBA: Allan Houston is thinking of making a comeback.
“It’s something I’d like to do,'’ Houston said. “It’s just a matter of getting myself back in game shape and getting used to playing again.'’
“I’m looking to play a supporting role to some of these great young stars,'’ Houston said. “More of a leadership role, someone who can add experience and stability late in games. I don’t expect my scoring and my minutes to be what they used to, but at the same time, I’m not looking to just be a decoy out there. I’d like to have some kind of role.'’
The only comeback this guy should be thinking about is a return to the big screen. Black and White totally deserves a sequel.

I would love Allan Houston off my bench. This guy retired prematurily…injuries. If he’s 100% healthy, just bury him in the corner and dish to him for the 3-ball alllll day. The same thing I’d do with Reggie. www.clutch3.com

Ryan, if we meet halfway we can probably be walk-ons for the Celts or the Heat or the Sixers. 30 must be the new 18 and 40 must be the new 25. Or something asinine like that.

I guess we aren’t the only ones bored. You know what gets me? If I could retire today, with financial security and the ability to do whatever the hell I wanted, I’d be in the Caribbean somewhere, golfing in the morning, snorkling in the afternoon, and sipping on a mai tai at sunset. Why would I ever want to go back to work, ever again?

On the other hand, I hope Reggie does comeback, just to avoid having to listen to his analysis on TNT. Allan wasn’t bad, though.

Because playing in the NBA isn’t work? Oh yeah, and it means a guaranteed million a year, at least. Not to mention some of these guys absolutely BURN to compete. Never really thought Allan Houston was one of those guys, but hey, maybe he is.

When Konate shows up, he shows up big. Was the Allan Houston quote, “It’s something I’d like to do.” or was he misquoted, because it makes more sense as, “I’d like something to do.” That guy was under the radar when he was good, under the radar when being paid the big bucks to underachieve, and his comeback will be under the radar, if it even happens at all.

Also, keep in mind that Allan Houston is younger than Robert Horry and Alonzo Mourning, and is just two months older than Bruce Bowen and less than a year older than Shaq (he’s SIX YEARS younger than Reggie Miller). Factor in that he took two full seasons off, and only played 70 games over the last two seasons he did play, dude should be good to go.

More “Allan Houston Money”?
Aug.9 at 4:40 pm
Joel O's says:
Don’t know if anyone remembers but he had most mechanically perfect jump shot in the NBA for a few years. I actually watched a lot of tape of him shooting jumpers to work on my own shot. If all anyone expects him to do is to knock down open threes, Houston is EASILY better than a “shooter” like Damon Jones, and if I were a veteran team needing a deadly jumpshooter, he’s not a bad pickup at all.
Aug.9 at 4:41 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
Hopefully he can be the first guy in NBA history to be bought out twice. Unless that’s already happened and I’m just blanking it out.
Aug.9 at 4:42 pm
Mo Charlo says:
He should bring Spree back with him, so they can run the table in the playoffs only to lose to the Spurs again. That would be sweet. But only if we get another Marcus Camby jumping over Tim Duncan, and another Latrell Spreewell jumping through Mario Elie. Mario Elie had a rough year that year, I’m pretty sure that Whit Eboy also funked one on him that year.

Anthony Verna says:
I hear the Celtics might need a shooter.
Aug.9 at 4:44 pm

What we need is an old-timers league with four 12-man teams that will play a full schedule during the offseason to give the NBA something to put on NBA-TV. Reggie, Pippen, Ewing, Houston, the list of guys who could play goes on and on. Everyone in the league would put like three grand into a pot when the season started, and then the winning team would split the pot between themselves at the end of the summer. There could be an EBC system too where guys can just show up and play one week, like if Dunleavy want to come get into a game. That would solve this whole problem of old players depressing everyone with their unsuccessful comebacks.

Poona says:
Hey Konate, Greg Anthony hasn’t come back (yet) but Penny has… On the Heat!! MIAMI — Penny Hardaway and Shaquille O’Neal are together again. The 36-year-old Hardaway, who last played an NBA game in November 2005, signed with the Miami Heat on Thursday and is reuniting with O’Neal — his former Orlando Magic teammate back in the mid-1990s. “Penny is a player who has been an All-Star and has enjoyed an illustrious career,” Heat president Pat Riley said. “We have been impressed at his hard work and dedication this summer to get back in shape and return to the NBA. He is a skilled player who can help us in multiple positions.” The team said Hardaway wasn’t available for comment. Hardaway, a four-time All-Star game starter, has averaged 15.4 points in his career, but hasn’t finished a season averaging double digits in scoring since the 2002-03 season with Phoenix. He played in four games with the New York Knicks early in the 2005-06 campaign before succumbing to knee injuries. He’s the second notable acquisition Miami has made during the free agent period; the team signed former Los Angeles Lakers starting point guard Smush Parker last month. Hardaway figures to be a candidate to inherit the role Eddie Jones held with the Heat at the end of last season, someone who can play either shooting guard or small forward. Jones signed a two-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks last week. Miami has spent much of the offseason looking for free agent help; the Heat tried unsuccessfully last month to sign guard Mo Williams, who remained in Milwaukee after the Bucks offered him a deal worth more than $20 million over what Miami could afford. Miami also has been in discussions about acquiring restricted free agent Mickael Pietrus from Golden State, and still could bring back James Posey — another free agent who has spent the past two seasons with the Heat. “I can’t worry about what we don’t have or what we missed out on,” Heat guard Dwyane Wade said earlier this week. “We have to worry about what we can continue to get.” Somewhat surprisingly, that list includes Hardaway. Back in his Orlando days, including the Magic’s run to the NBA finals in 1995, Hardaway was the first in the triumvirate of young, high-scoring guards that O’Neal has been paired with throughout his NBA career. O’Neal teamed with Kobe Bryant with the Los Angeles Lakers, and helped Wade deliver a championship to Miami in 2006. Hardaway and O’Neal teamed to average nearly 48 points per game in their three seasons together with Orlando — but that duo was split more than a decade ago, when O’Neal headed to the Lakers. A year later, Hardaway was widely perceived to be the reason then-Magic coach Brian Hill was fired. Hardaway was sent to Phoenix before the 1999-2000 season in a sign-and-trade deal for forwards Pat Garrity and Danny Manning, along with two draft picks. The Suns shipped him to the Knicks midway through the 2003-04 season, and another trade brought him back to Orlando in February 2006 — for five whole days before the Magic waived Hardaway and his expiring $15.8 million contract. At the time, Hardaway said he planned to continue playing. A year and a half later, he’s getting that opportunity.

If I was a young buck I would want these old guys coming back. There is no way Houston could guard Durant. These guys might be able to shoot, but who is going to d up? They can’t keep up with the young cats on the fast teams offensively or defensively. As much I like Oak, I agree retired should mean travelling the world or something. Or being a Wal-Mart greeter.
Aug.10 at 4:03 pm
Too_True says:
This younger generation is sad, how can you hate on someone just because they are 30 or a little over? Allan put up 53 on Kobe, did we forget that? That was in 2002, just 5 years go. If his knees are healthy he can drop numbers again in the “YOUNGER” stars faces. Vince himself said that he hated guarding Allan, because no matter what he did or tried to do, Allan would still score.. Allan wants to come back for the love of the game, not because he ran out of money (dummy). He has businesses, so he’ll never be broke. Stop worrying about how much the players make or made, and get your broke a** off of the Internet and make that money..

With the advent of Lebron, sadly, fans are expecting their stars to be younger and younger - the “sell-by” date seems to have gone down a lot. T-Mac lamenting that he’s lost a step doesn’t help. Don’t kids know that Jordan won his first ring when he was nearly 30? And that the second threepeat happened when he was well, well into his thirties?
Aug.10 at 6:50 pm
Joel O's says:
“Age is but a number” - that is true. Because it all depends on how you take care of your body, or, how lucky you are. Larry Bird flung himself all over the place, and by his early 30’s his body was breaking down. Ditto for Zeke. On the other hand, AI plays like a maniac, often through injury, and he’s still relatively healthy - and spry. Look at the likes of Kevin Willis, Uncle Cliffy, Karl Malone, Stockton, Horry, Bowen: they take care of themselves and they all were/are extremely successful right up to their late 30s. If Penny and H20 can still play and contribute, who knows? Remember - Michael Finley was thought to be washed up by the Mavs 2 years ago, and this year he was lethal in the playoffs.
