Yi’s Chinese Team Hates Milwaukee
Plus: Amare worries about his brother.
-The Guangdong Tigers, Yi Jianlian’s Chinese team, do not want him in Milwaukee.
“This is not — as media reports have said — because Milwaukee, as a city with very few Chinese people, is not good for Yi’s commercial development,” team chief Chen Haitao said.
“Rather we want to find a team suitable for Yi’s growth. That’s the root of the problem,” he added.
“The national team and the Olympic Games are now our key considerations … If [Yi] goes to a team where he can’t compete, that would be being irresponsible to the national team,” Chen said.
(My favorite thing about this whole messy situation? That Eazy Yi seemingly isn’t allowed to speak for himself. I find that simply awesome.)
-Tony Parker and Eva Longoria are not allowed to procreate. Yet. (Via: With Leather)
Actress Eva Longoria has reportedly been hit with a baby ban by the producers of hit TV show Desperate Housewives for fear of ruining their scripts.
She says, “We’re fine with that. We want to spend some time with each other, even though we want kids very much.”
(Does this mean the sex ban is still on?)
-Amare Stoudemire is dealing with his little brother’s troubles with the law. Marwan Williams, Amare’s half-brother, was one of five people arrested on July 4th in what police believed to be a botched drug heist.
“It’s a little disappointing,” Stoudemire said. “All I can do is put my prayers out there and hope everything works out for the best.”
-Some dude named Cheikh Samb has been signed by the Pistons. Can you tell that it’s an extremely slow news day?

I haven’t really said much about the Yi situation so far, but I’ll shed some light for you young fellows. I don’t think it’s Yi’s opinion at all that he shouldn’t be playing in Milwaukee. He’s from a comunistic government that basically wants to get him in a city where he will bring the most money possible to China. This is complete bullsh*t that people are blaming Yi. He really has no say in the matter. If he was an American player then he would have the option to fire his representatives and just play ball, but if he does that with his reps then the consequences for him would be even worse.

damn russ, easy on the Yi haterade.
It’s nice and easy for us americans to call him out and say, “you’re an adult, make your own decisions” but in many /OTHER/ places in this world grown-assed men are routinely told what to do by others, and they have no choice but to obey. its what happens when DEMOCRACY isn’t present. (see tianamen square, circa 1989) anyhow, i dont see how anyone is his right mind could think that Yi is turning down guarenteed millions and a chance to play in the L just because he’s a “jerk” or “malcontent”, etc. Even true (american) holdouts like Kobe or Francis wouldn’t have risked their chance to play in the League over what team they were going to, if it had gotten down to that. i hope this post wasn’t way to political.
Jul.17 at 4:02 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
I understand all that, dj. I just wish that whoever’s pulling Yi’s strings realized that this is the WORST way to introduce him to the NBA and America. At this rate the only people buying his jerseys are gonna be the ones who want to burn them.

@ Russ
I totally agree. I just hope that the Sternbot takes this one chance to use his vast, dictator-like powers for a more noble use (than fining players for long shorts, etc). If foreign governments can essentially dictate to american companies (what teams really are) how they should conduct business (the draft = business), I think someone has to step in. (and it is the chinese gov’t, not Yi’s Guangdong team, who are the real actors - see reference to the national team and Olympics)

i think the first thing for Yi to do is get another agent….Dan Fegan needs to go….right from the get-go he’s been the one pushing for Yi to go to a larger market… sending faxes to team, informing them that Yi has or does not have interest in playing for them?.. grow the f*ck up Fegan… it’s called a draft for a reason, if players don’t want to get drafted by certain teams, they should wait until those teams are out of the lottery to declare… i have no sympathy nor pity for players like Steve Francis who refused to come to Vancouver… look where he is now… With Yi, i can understand the amount of control the Chinese government might have on him, but still 1) dan fegan does not help; 2) Milwaukee IS a place where Yi can grow and develop and get a lot of minutes; 3)Who else is gonna want a mysterious, unproven chinese player who pouts about where he plays?

http://sports.163.com/07/0718/09/3JM436E400051CA1.html
…as per air yi’s lead, i did a little reading up on the chinese site… an interview with President of the Guangdong Tigers, Chen Hai Tao suggests this much: on Easy’s situation: “all negotiations between the Bucks and Yi’s party pertain to NBA regulations, the Bucks had the right to draft Yi and we understand that…with that said, Yi has the right to choose whether or not he signs that contract… (translator’s note: true, but if he’s not prepared to play for who drafts him, then he can play in a summer league and earn a contract from another team, not declare to be drafted and then pick and choose) thus, this pressure and criticism on Yi is unjustified… On Dan Fegan:
“it is not fegan’s fault that the bucks drafted Yi… we are also cooperating with Fegan to make this work, it is not a simple matter of Fegan not landing Yi on a preferred team, therefore we should fire him, it’s not like that…(translator’s note: OH YES IT IS! FIRE HIS @$$) he has done nothing wrong to warrant a forced resignation… On Yi’s possibility of returning to the CBA (Chinese B-Ball Association) if the Bucks don’t trade Yi:
“it is hard to answer that question… obviously, it would benefit the Guangdong Tigers if he comes back…however, how would it benefit Yi? it is his dream to play in the NBA and an opportunity for him to grow and further develop his skills….this would in turn benefit the Chinese National team in the future as well… there is no reason for Yi to return to the CBA….
It is Yi’s decision to make (translator’s note: BULLSH*T!). there is no conclusion yet, everything is in negotiations right now and only time will tell what Yi’s final decision is.” this is just according to my understanding of the article… translation is not guaranteed to be of professional standard nor 100% accurate…

Joel O's says:
This is becoming overly political. It’s all moot, fellas, because: 1) We haven’t heard anything proper from Yi. 2) Apparently, from the Chinese POV, his Chinese team isn’t trying to deny him from playing in Milwaukee. 3) With the recent friction between US and China, how much of this is real and how much of this a propaganda/media war between China and the US? 4) After being told “Iraq has WMD’s” I wouldn’t put it beyond anyone to make up “Yi’s Chinese team is preventing him from playing with the Bucks”. THEREFORE, and I speak as an Asian person who grew up between both worlds, we can either get patriotic, vitriolic, political and hot-headed… or we can just take a step back and look at the situation for what it is: a vague, misunderstood situation which is obviously being used as a political lightning rod to incite feelings of xenophobia. In other words, take it easy, fellas.
Jul.18 at 2:59 am
Joel O's says:
To further emphasize my point, think of this: we haven’t heard anything, really, from Yi. Nor do we really know what transpired between the Bucks and him when they met. Nothing from either, um, horses’ mouths. And a lot from everyone else. Vague situation. Vast overreactions. So please guys, let’s try and keep this civil.

How is it about “growth & development” and not about Milwaukee not having a large enough Chinese population or commercial interest when like John says, the Chinese government basically wants to get him in a city where he will bring the most money possible to China? It would’ve been fine if Yi had enough leverage based on proven on-court skills for his “handlers” to demand something like this but the way I see it, other teams would only have interest in Yi for his off-court profitability. How sad, indeed. To Yi’s “handlers”, when in Rome do as the Romans do. Quit whining and trying to make your own rules. It’s not always about Yi-u.

i think Yao was too important for the L (and to the Chinese gov., Stern, etc) to risk his landing on the Memphis Grizzlies or something of that nature. When I saw that Houston had won the lottery that year i just knew it reeked of stern’s ping-pong ball shenanigans. Houstons not LA or NYC, but as far as asians go, it has as much as any other place in the US.
Being asian myself, i still don’t see how people like Joel-O could insinuate that this is some sort of geopolitical chess match between two superpowers. I think its quite the opposite. Stern obviously didnt feel Yi was important enough (or not as critical as Yao was) to fix the lottery so that he fell into the hands of the Warriors or whatever. I think the chinese “handlers” (note here that the pro team Yi played for is also completely under the control of the govt) are throwing a hissyfit that their next prized superstar who will glorify the great chinese image across the world is stuck in a city best know for beer, cheese and Brett Favre. Remember that even today Yao’s former team and just about every other higher-up in the Chinese basketball world is getting some sort of cut from Yao’s salary. I’m willing to bet you tons of $$ that Yi himself has no problem at all playing in milwaukee. Hell, he probably would jump at the first chance he gets at making a vastly better life for his family. But this is the same government that takes kids and basically forces them in elementary school to be taken from their parents and sent to “academies” where they practice sports fiendishly, and are tested to see how they will potentially develop, etc etc. If this all sounds a little bit Ivan Drago to you, it is. Yi’s parents were both National Team Handball players, so their “genetic stock” so to say was on the radar of the gov’t the moment it was conceived. Yi’s entire life has been planned out by the gov’t, what gives us cozy and free Americans the right to judge Yi for being a “crybaby who won’t follow the rules?”
Jul.18 at 3:59 pm
dj says:
disclaimer: i dont think Stern rigs the lottery actually, all that patrick ewing conspiracy stuff is BS. But i think a player like Yao had too much at stake for Stern to put his fate in the hands of chance.
Jul.18 at 4:26 pm
Joel O's says:
Ya know, dj, I agree with you. I’m not saying it necessarily IS a “goeopolitical chess match”, but that it “might” be. Because, like you said, I too think that Yi “himself has no problem at all playing in milwaukee”. That’s my point exactly: all this brouhaha - and nothing coming from Yi nor the Bucks on this issue. Think back to the pre-draft period, of stories of Yi seemingly fitting in nicely with the American culture, all by himself. I remember a quote where he said he liked the parties and the nightlife. That kid seems so far away now - because we haven’t heard jack from him, only mysterious tidbits from his “handlers” and the press from either side. My point tallies with yours, dj: don’t hate Yi yet, because the odds are, he’s not the one throwing a diva fit, since someone else - be it his “handlers”, the press, hell, “geopolitical chess players” are the ones saying everything here.

@Joel O’s: very nice of you to, basically, label me a xenophobe for voicing an - albeit pretty irritated - opinion on this issue. I’m from Finland so I really don’t have an axe to grind with regard to US-China geopolitics, or anything of the sort. Moreover, I consider myself rather sensitive to latent racism, and would have voiced the exact same points were the offending party of African-American, native Croatian or Indian-Swedish origin. Thus I resent what you were suggesting about me. Also, perhaps there is some political wrangling going on behind the scenes, but I still don’t see the point. Would it really matter that much to the Chinese Government (or their minions) where Yi plays? Maybe, but I’m not wholly convinced. I also like your logic on justifying why Yi is not a diva: he’s adapted to the US lifestyle well, and likes the parties and nightlife. Right, because those things are directly antithetical to diva behaviour… I’m saying this ultimately cursory contact with a certain kind of US culture could be exactly what triggers this kind of behaviour. But maybe I am wrong, and the kid is innocent of all of this. We’ll have to wait and see.
