Sure Isiah, Bringing in Ron Artest Sounds Like an Excellent Idea. What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Who’s next, Dennis Rodman, Roy Tarpley and Chris Andersen?

By Russ Bengtson

Is this seriously being discussed?

I suppose it is, because otherwise Marc “The Animal” Berman wouldn’t be writing about it. With any sort of “good guys first” dictum thrown out the window following the Zach Randolph trade, Isiah Thomas seems hell-bent on turning the Knicks into the inmate team from The Longest Yard. The latest rumor, as laid out in the story above, has Zeke possibly dealing third-year forward David Lee, the human double-double (and one of the few guys on the Knicks who actually knows how to play basketball the right way—no Larry Brown) for former All-Star Ron Artest, who has somehow managed to wear out his welcome with the MALOOFS, for God’s sake.

As with Randolph, you can’t question Artest’s talents on the floor. He’s a stellar perimeter defender, a better-than-average scorer. But as with Randolph, you absolutely should question Artest’s actions off of it. His list of transgressions is as long as it is distinguished. They’ve been exhaustively cataloged here (and some can probably be referenced by the links on the right). I love Ron-Ron as much as the next guy (provided the next guy isn’t from Detroit) but my God, don’t bring him here.

Like Randolph (and Stephon Marbury, and Eddy Curry, and pretty much everyone else on the Knicks), Artest could be a valuable piece on a team with solid veteran leadership, someone like a Tim Duncan or a Chauncey Billups, All-Stars who are not willing to tolerate anything that would distract from the ultimate goal of winning a championship. It’s why guys like Stephen Jackson and Rasheed Wallace have had their biggest successes in San Antonio and Detroit respectively.

But the Knicks don’t have anyone like that, the classy veteran All-Star who absolutely demands respect. (Malik Rose is the closest thing they have to one, which is downright terrifying.) Instead, it seems that Isiah prefers to fill that role himself—which is all well and good, but he hasn’t played an NBA game in over a decade—and fill the entire roster with cast-offs and damaged goods. In the meantime, the team desperately needs a powerful on-court personality to lead them—one in a uniform, not a suit.

If the Knicks do acquire Artest, it will absolutely represent an increase in on-court talent. A starting five of Curry, Randolph, Artest, Marbury and Jamal Crawford should be enough to get the Knicks into the playoffs in the anemic East. But it doesn’t put them any closer to actually winning a championship, and it puts another key ingredient into an ego timebomb of a roster that is destined for an ugly end. Can’t wait for the season to start.

(By the way, whatever happened to going after KG or Kobe? Heck, try and get Yi Jianlian.)

To there’s only one place I’d love to see Artest and that’s Miami. He cant be contained, but maybe with Wade, Shaq, Riley and possibly Zo, Miami has people that Ron would respect. Also, if the Knicks want to throw away David Lee, we’d love ot have him in Dallas. That guy is too good to be wasted by Isiah

1st…maybe …..Damn, Ron-Ron on my hometown team huh! well he is obviosuly one of the league’s best defenders but he is also insane I mean the plan woks in theory and on paper but I don’t know if the Knicks could pull this one off…..then again I see what zeke is trying to do he’s trying to make New York tough, but does tough eguall crazy? I remeber he said something like he wants the Garden to be a scary place for teams and if we do get Ron Ron next to randolph am 100% sure the Garden would become a scary place for anyone to visit…………………………………….but all in all if I were Zeke I’d do it, if it doesn’t get the knicks a ring at least it”ll get ratings I love New York The garden Edition coming soon

What can one even say anymore? I mean, really. This is like Michael Bay (or someone of equal ineptitude) trying to make a film about a drug czar in Mexico City, with real drug dealers as extras, then proceeding to cast Robert Downey Jr. and Richard Pryor and Gary Busey and John Belushi and Dennis Hopper, thinking his masterpiece is in the bag. you guys are so dumb. Sheed Wallace was a problem and then he blew up in Detroit. Stephen Jackson was a problem and he was a big part of the greatest upset in playoff history. Artest is a beast and would fit the Knicks perfectly. Remeber Charles Oakley and Anthonny Mason both had off court problems but they were great for the Knicks.

A lot of people are saying the Rottweiler trade works on paper. What paper are they looking at? The arrest warrant? Isiah must have way more juice at the Garden than Layden ever did. Dolan made Layden trade away Spree and Camby because of supposed “character issues”. Isiah seems intent on resurrecting the Bad Boys, but he also seems to forget that while those guys were rough and tough (and a little dirty), they were also professionals who weren’t criminally insane. Rodman was a bit loony in Detroit, but he wasn’t a total nutcase like Artest. All that being said, if the Knicks can’t be good, at least they can be funny. Pull the trigger on this trade, but keep David Lee in the clip. If we can get Artest at the cost of Jerome James or Jared Jeffries and a future draft pick, I say go for it. If Ron Ron goes berserk, he has a cheap contract and he’s not locked up long term. Worst case scenario, we rent him for a season, he goes schizo and we cut him off the books. But please don’t trade David Lee.

Someone mentioned it earlier, and I think it’s a good idea - bringing in Derek Fisher would be a smart move for the Knicks. For Fisher, it should provide access to some of the best medical care for his daughter (if I’m not mistaken, that is where her surgery was performed), and for the Knicks, Fisher would be that respected veteran prescence. His won three chips in the soap opera that was the Shaq-Kobe Lakers, so being in NY shouldn’t be scuh a big deal to him, adn if you saw the love the GState players showed him in the series with Utah, he has enormous respect form his peers; plus he can still play tough D and chip in offensively when needed. This would be a lot better and a hell of a lot cheaper than brining in Artest, especially if it mean giving up David Lee. I agreed with the Z-Bo trade, but this Artest deal makes no sense.

Then, they’ll come back stronger in ‘09 just to get some p*ssy. It would be virtually impossible for them not to make the Playoffs cause they’d want dat p*ssy/Playoffs sooooo bad.
