So now what? Oh yeah, Kobetime.
The more things change…
The Finals and playoffs are over, and as we look forward to the draft… oh no wait. KOBE has something to say…
Sigh… remember all that team and system stuff we’ve been forcefed (and forcefeeding) through the Spurs run to the championship? Well, this is not that. He should stay on the Lakers, because at this point KOBE is a plaything for our collective amusement. Do you want to see happy KOBE smiling and winning rings? Or do you want to see dark KOBE, frustrated and taking on the world one triple team at a time, lashing out at everything internally while keeping his repressed public image as guarded as he can? We already know that when Kobe plays on a good team, he can win multiple championships. Anyone can win it all playing for a good team. That’s what Tim Duncan just did. LeBron took a bad team to The Finals, where they fell flat on their face. Maybe KOBE can take that last step and prove he is the best ever (he thrives on such thoughts. I guess) by winning it all in spite of his team roster and management. Perhaps Phil should retire once more so that KOBE can be free from the past. Or he could just go along for the ride with Chicago or Phoenix. One thing is for sure, people like to talk and speculate about him.
By the way, the T-Wolves recently traded Mike James for Juwan Howard. I’m not saying Mike James is the greatest player, and on that team he’s below Randy Foye in the long-term future, but um, someone is going to have to explain this one. Back when Juwan Howard was the second best player on the Bullets, people would always compare his post moves to Kevin McHale. It’s possible that McHale took those words to heart and has decided the only way for the T-Wolves to win is for him to resurrect himself as a basketball player. You could say that it’s a good move to lose one of their 15 PGs in exchange for a big man, but whose fault is that they have all of those PGs? Kevin McHale. He is not a good general manager.
As for the summer, we’ve got the draft coming up. Lots of non-NBA stories coming in from a bunch of different people. My 10 day exodus to a secluded island (LOST?!?) where if I even see a computer or a cell phone I will punch who ever is using it right in the face. Lots of putting the interns to work on putting stories from the magazine on the site. We’ll come up with ideas. It’s hot out. I was at a street fair yesterday and the sun was trying to kill me.
Looking back on The Finals, I am glad they are over and it was a sweep. If you want to get all sportswritery, I could say that I predicted it. But hey, if you used that information as a basis to earn supplemental revenue, then I congratulate you, and it is you who are the real winner.
Two highlights from our trip to Cleveland: The Chris Sheridan Explosion and our Friday conversation with Stephen A. Smith.
Lang, an unnamed espn writer whose name I won’t mention just because I like to keep that element of mystery (like LOST???), and I, were sitting at a table in some horrible breakfast restaurant at the airport. Stephen A. approached the espn writer and they started talking. It was 7 A.M., so we didn’t get the full on energy we’ve all come to expect from the man, but he still went on a toned down tirade about incompetent GMs and stuff. It must be hard to turn the switch off. The highlight of the monologue was when he said “If Cleveland won last night and we had to go to game 5…” he looked longingly out the window to the distant horizon. He paused… dramatically. He finished his thought with a despondent tone “…I don’t know what I’d do.” GET THAT MAN OFF GENERAL HOSPITAL AND PUT HIM ON THE SHAKESPEREAN STAGE!!! I AM SCREAMING LIKE HE NORMALLY DOES AS AN HOMAGE!
Back to Sheridan. The only way to describe it is to say it was like the scene in Goodfellas where Joe Pesci shoots the busboy (played by Michael Imperioli!) in the foot, but more demeaning and hilarious. It was so good that I told my girlfriend about it, and she was appalled. That’s when you know something is funny.
Other than that, the media part of The Finals was a lot of meeting people whom I read but have never talked to in person. It was like being on a 3-day blind internet date, only without the NBC Dateline creepy sexual predator part.
Alright… so, KOBE! He’s crazy, right? Remember back when he won his third ring and people were speculating that he could be the new Bill Russell and all of this stuff? Well maybe winning too much too soon can drive you even further towards insanity. Very impressive. We are all waiting for the next development in this saga. Kobe and KG to some random third team in a 9-way trade, which will fill the roster with anyone that will play for the league minimum?

I think Kobe should be traded as any athelete wh puts himself above his team or is (as with this particular instance) asking to be traded but I would trade him to Philly or even Milwaulkee I would have loved to send him to Denver where the public adore him. On a serious note I just hope he doesn’t miss out on rings simply because of impatience or bad ‘advice’ from an advisor which may be the case now. LA may not be the best team to be in but they ain’t they ain’t teh worst. Now if we could all unite and will Kevin Garnett to demand a trade…

But surrounded by a good team, which the Lakers WERE temporarily for that series with the Suns 2 seasons ago, Happy Kobe the best I’ve seen Kobe play since Shaq left. Kobe Should get the Slammy for the league’s biggest B*tch. You never heard Mitch Richmond complain about leading a crappy team. When Sharif Abdur- Raheem was in his prime, he never complained. I wish Jerry West never rescued him from the Charlotte Hornets, He basically would have been in the same boat as T-MAC (all the talent in the world but NO RINGS!!!!!!!!)
I find it funny that this new generation, whom everyone dubbed as the “lack of respect generation” has a far greater understanding of the team concept than that IDIOT Bryant. ‘Bron took an even less talented team than the Lakers to the finals (granted in the Eastern Conference) and even when his team was screwing up he still passed to them in the finals. IN CONCLUSION, Kobe is a glory hog who merely wants to be in the forefront of everyones mind. AND now that ‘Bron took a VERY, VERY UNTALENTED Team to the finals. I think we can add jealousy to that description!!!!!!

Stop hatin on Kobe! So the guy wants a freakin trade, the Lakers should give it to him. I want him to be traded because the Lakers have no talent to help him besides Odom and he averages 7 points, 10 assists, and 12 rebounds a game. Why Odom doesn’t try to score is very puzzling. I know he didn’t average those numbers but those were how a lot of his stat lines were throughout the season. KOBE TO SUNS! PLAY WIT IT.

One thing I don’t understand is that for business decisions, teams hire people who are not trained for business, i.e. people who did not graduate from college, or people who had a phony major while they were in college. Jerry West is amazing at it, though. Anyways, I like Kobe to Atlanta. The Hawks have plenty of young, cheap guys that can play, and they would be willing to dump in search of someone who would put fans in the seats. For this same reason, I also like Kobe going to Memphis (Hakim Warrick, Mike Miller, Chucky Atkins, Pau Gasol are all tradeable), as well as the fact that despite his retiring, the Grizz are a Jerry West joint. The reality is, no matter where he goes, Kobe is spoiled enough to demand too much money to allow for any other help, which would need to come in the form of a solid big man (which are few, and expensive). I will say that Kobe is a great player, but he has too high of an opinion of himself. He needs to be cut down to size if he wants another ring. And repeat after me… KOBE CAN’T DO IT BY HIMSELF!
Jun.18 at 12:43 pm
Rasheedionics says:
I understand where Kobe coming from. Once you taste the triumph of victory, you can’t stomach the agony of defeat… year, after year, after year… Dudes like Mitch Richmond and Rahim never won, so they don’t know what they’re missing. Kobe realized that he’s just being used as a circus attraction. He single-handidly puts people in those seats. People do not come to the game or tune in to see the Lakers. They come to see “what will Kobe do”. Nobody realistically expects Lakers to win the championship. They just want to see Kobe either go off and score 100 points or self-implode and do something crazy. Either way, it’s a great entertainment. And I think Kobe is tired of being a side-show… So I kind of feel for him there.

I think, if U sign a long-term contract, you have to fulfill it. If you want to have more control, you have to sign a shorter contract. But there is too much money involved and also the teams often want a foundation to build on.
But Kobe can do no right, whatever he does. And people that say, he can’t get his team out of the first round and another guy brings his weak team to the finals.
Kobe had the Suns on the verge of a first-round exit last year and that Suns Team played way better than the Wizards, the Nets and the Pistons this year.

Personally, I love KG for not demanding a trade. I love KG regardless, but he understands that part of the tradeoff for a zillion-dollar contract is that you have to man the f**k up. (And he has more of a case than Kobe when it comes to demanding a trade anyway. Imagine how much better the Wolves would be if they hadn’t lost all those first-round picks?)

Me too!
I would like to see KG on a good team, but I really respect him for staying put and man up.
But I can understand Kobe too and the most of us don’t know what has been talked behind the curtain to Kobe.
If the Lakers organisation made false promises, he signed his contract under wrong circumstances.
And he is not the first one disappointed with the direction his teams goes.
He should not demand a trade, but because he does, he is not the devil himself.
It’s just an endless discussion without a result.

Jun.18 at 6:01 pm
jbn74sb says:
I don’t think any of the various reposts were mistakes or accidents. One of the administrators of kobe’s site stated that Kobe directed him to keep reposting it every day, but that was a week or so ago. I believe the mistake happened due to the AP’s shoddy reporting the post as new content, and then the national media following suit. In any event, IF the Lakers are involved in a major trade, it will presumably happen before or right around the draft. We need slam’s resident kobe fan and expert Ryan Jones to really break this whole thing down for us. And I mean with more than some sort of sarcastic “Bipolar. I told you so.” type post.

I think that the Lakers should make Kobe happy and get KG or J0. What’s the point of keeping Bynum? I mean, he’s got a ton of potential, but so does Darious Miles and Kwame Bronw. What if Bynum never turns that potential into talent like DMiles and Kwame? Then you lost your superstar and you got nothing to show for it. I’m not saying that they should trade the fat kid for JKidd, I’m just saying that they need to get Kobe some help. The Lakers were pretty good before Odom got hurt and Bynum hit the wall, so they should get Kobe some help. If KG comes to town and you team him with Kobe and Walton (Luke not Bill), they should have a contender. We all know what Jordan can do (Farmar, not MJ) and if they keep Kwame (who could be good if KG work with him) they would have a more than capable team. Remember that Kwame has a ton of potential (Remember that article that said “Kwame give life”).

It does not matter where kobe goes or if he stays with the lakers, he is not winning another ring…unless they can get a mega star like KG, its over… The Spurs have a 2-3 years of contending, the suns and Mavs too, this years draft might create some powerful teams coming up, and lets not forget the AI and Melo combo, Denver has more talent than the lakers. In the east, wade is getting healthy and most likely Riles will pull out a good trade… LBJ is doing his thing, Detroit and Da Bulls are contending. Where does kobe fit in all this? I seriously cannot see how he can be in a contending team the next 3-4 years.

Kobe to the Orlando Magic, why can’t anybody see it?
Jun.19 at 2:27 am

@J-Lao: Because the Magic only has one player that would be a rotation player on any team, Dwite Howard. If they don’t give up D.How, then they ain’t gettin’ Kobe. Who could they make part of the trade? Darko? Dooling? Some other nobody?
Jun.19 at 2:51 am
Chukaz says:
I think Kobe’s no-trade-clause is overrated. That clause will ultimately keep him a Laker. Since he can choose were he goes he won’t go nowhere. If he wants to go to Chi-town, then the Bulls will stop being as appealing as they are ’cause they will have to give up all their good pieces in order to get Kobe, and when Kobe sees the trade, he will deside that they ain’t contenders no more. If good teams want to get Kobe, they would have to give up their good players whick will make them a bad team. Lets use PHX as an example: Suns give Amare and Marion in exchange for Kobe. This is what the starting line up would look like: PG Steve Nash, SG Raja Bell, SF Kobe Bryant, PF Boris Diaw, C >. Bench: James Jones, >. How good would that team be? They would suck and Kobe would want out in about a week ’cause Kobe ain’t gonna stand around the perimeter while Nash tries to drible the air out of the ball and then get the ball with 5 seconds left on the clock to launch a three so that Nash will pick up an assist.

Situation #2) Bulls give: Kirk Hinrich (that’s not the way to spell it, is it?), Ben Gordon, Luol Deng, and Ben Wallace. Lakers give: Kobe and Mr. I like Snowboarding. Bulls starting lineup: PG Chris Duhon, SG Kobe Bryant, SF Andres Nocioni, PF Tyrus Thomas, C PJ Brown (if they re-sign him, if not then “insert name here”). Bench: . Would Kobe wanna go there? I don’t think so.
@Kobe Bryant - Yo, homie, just stick around fo’ a while, dawg! The team might not suck so much next year.

As far as I’m conserned, Kobe just okie doked the media. And Dr. Buss probably pretty mad ’cause he is with a hot 21 year old and can’t stop thinkin’ about Kobe.

somebody get KG in Toronto with Bosh for some of the Euro trash they have up there! or with the Grizzlies for Pau, or better yet trade him straight across for Tim Duncan so KG can get a couple ring’s and show everybody the KG is just as good if not better than Duncan, and although he’s great Duncan is still a little overated!

Wait, why didn’t I think of it before? Pau Gasol for anybody in the Lakers roster except Kobe and Odom. Thats brilliant!!!!!!!! Some on Dr. Buss make it happen so that you can continue to do hot 21 year olds w/o thinking about Kobe.

I gotta say, I really don’t think the Lakers will give Kobe up for nothing like with Shaq! It’s gotta be a block buster with some big names or a complete package of some guy’s that are likely to help rebuild quick! And after this years finals I think the league needs a good Laker team for all there fan base, cause I bet that alot of people are losing interest when a boring team like the Spurs are getting Chip’s handed to them by the refs and big wigs in the NBA offices!

I understand why Kobe wants out, but where will he go? He’s better of restructuring his deal so the Lakers can spend some cash on somebody like a Chauncey Billups. Maybe work a sign and trade, sending Billups away for a mid-level big man like Zach Randolph. If they trade Kobe, the fans leave. Does anybody remember how the stands looked when LA had Vlade ‘Fake Couture’ Divac, Sedale ‘Child Support Bid’ Threatt and Elden Campbell? It was ugly, real ugly. Trading Kobe will have them going through those days all over again.

kobe should be traded to a team who needs a veteran player with some championship experience to guide them. A team like the chigaco bulls they have a lot of young guys that can ball they just need some more experience besides Ben wallace. they have a defensive player in big ben now they need a big time scorer
