Links: We Are All Witnesses

LeBron.

by Lang Whitaker

Wow.

Just a quick note here before we get our full game notes posted, but…

Wow.

If you missed it, not only are you kicking yourself right now, but LeBron just turned in one of the the best Playoff performances I’ve ever seen. Just amazing stuff. In Cleveland’s 109-107 double overtime win tonight, LeBron was unstoppable. He finished with 48 points in 51 minutes, but even more impressive was the way he single-handedly beat the Pistons; nobody in a Detroit uniform could come close to even slowing him down. The dunks, the fading jumpers, anything he shot seemed to go in.

With the game on the line, from the 6:00 mark of the fourth quarter, LeBron scored 29 of Cleveland’s last 30 points. And he scored all of their last 25 points.

Bron deserved to win that game, but the Pistons kept it close and kept taking the lead, But Bron fought back each time. Then he won it with a 1-on-5 layup.

Why wasn’t Detroit triple-teaming LeBron each time across? No idea. Maybe Sam Mitchell was coaching.

Anyway, more tomorrow. And if you saw it, feel free to leave your thoughts here. Where does LeBron’s performance rank among the all-time great Playoff performances?

(And will someone please tell Reggie Miller to stop talking so much? Good grief, he won’t let Barkley get a word out. I’m turning off “Inside the NBA” because of him.)

Damm was following along on the score updates and box score at work as afternoon here in Aus, way to go Bron. He seems to be judged as harshly as anyone, alongside kobe, but people seem to forget he is really really good!

those piston fans will be having nightmares about this night for years

Also meant to note that Bron’s performance was the most Jordan-esque performance I’ve seen since…MJ.

what’s impressive to me is lebron’s ability to not only overcome the pistons, but his own inept coach. he is that dude.

Jun.1 at 12:15 am

Lang Whitaker says:
Yeah. And I’m watching replays now on Inside (muted) and the Pistons REALLY didn’t double him at all. It was even worse than I remembered it being. Nice work, Flip.

Jun.1 at 12:15 am

Sparker says:
NO ONE ELSE SCORED ON HIS TEAM FOR TWO OVERTIMES PLUS. i think pavlovic was the only one who had the impertinence to chuck up a shot

Jun.1 at 12:16 am

Sam Rubenstein says:
as amazing as LeBron was, the rest of the Cavs were that worthless. On offense at least if you want to be nice.
Could the most overrated person ever actually be underrated? huh? what?

Jun.1 at 12:16 am

K dot B dot from T dot says:
That was pretty ridiculous. I cant say I’ve seen every great playoff performance, but I know this one will be hyped up like crazy and rightfully so. What makes it so special is moments like when Webber got a 3 point play to foul out Illguakas (sp!). Then Lebron comes up court up in the air going left and hitting 3, ironically enough shooting over Webber….cold!!

wallace(crybaby) and the rest of the piss-tons need 2 stop crying at the refs cause puffy threw his whole body with and elbow leading at sideshow bob’s jaw and the ref called a shot clock violation. WTF is going on they need to SHUT UP

Jun.1 at 12:17 am

Mike C. says:
I don’t have much to say about the game itself, besides “wow”. I second the motion about Reggie Miller. Dude, shut up. Nobody tunes watched the TNT halftime show to listen to Reggie run his mouth. We watch so we can see Charles and Jet go back and forth and EJ attempt to moderate. Memo to TNT: 4 is a crowd.

Reggie is killing me. He’s not this dumb, is he? Does he really think the Pistons were guarding LeBron well?

Jun.1 at 12:19 am

HOLY EFF. 12 points at half. 48 in the end.

Jun.1 at 12:21 am

Snow actually did a great job guarding Tayshaun. That was shocking. Of course, Tayshaun did really play poorly all night.

Jun.1 at 12:22 am

Sam Rubenstein says:
p.s. Vincent has game notes responsibilities. Good luck with that. Anything less than a pulitzer is a dissappointment. No pressure though.
Good night.

Jun.1 at 12:22 am

Lang Whitaker says:
Also, my favorite Sheed moment of the night was after that turnaround that Varejao probably fouled him on, and Sheed ran back down the court and screamed at the ref: “Do you really think I’d shoot an airball?”

sk: I didn’t see the play. I’m just saying I’m sick of all the flopping that goes on nowadays, and Varejao is one of the biggest floppers. Somewhere Charles Oakley is throwing up in a carwash.

Not to sound too much like an LBJ promoter, but I personally feel as though that performance ranks up there with the likes of MJ’s Utah food poisoning fiasco and Magic’s fill-in for Kareem at Centre. Realistically, nobody does what Bron-Bron does. Next to the Hater of the Year, Ryan Jones, I haven’t heard a single thing from anyone hating on that absolute clinic put on by the King. Sure, some Detroit fans will find a way to weasel out of the negative light by blaming the referee’s, but any TRUE basketball fans know the truth: We Are Witnessess.

I’m a Pistons fan, and I gotta say, I’m emotionally drained after that game. Not disappointed or sad or even stunned, just completely drained. I honestly believe that the Cleveland LeBron James’ should’ve won this series by now, and while I think that my team can win, I just don’t think they will.
LeBron James… Damn…

Jun.1 at 12:56 am

sk says:
tmac’s back acts up when it counts

Jun.1 at 12:57 am

Dan says:
Oh Lang, you are quite the facillitator. . . But I think the real question that arises here is, why COULDN’T the Cavs run with the Spurs? When you think about it logically, if they take this series he world is theirs, so to speak. The confidence-boost the would all go through would be incredible. I think that is exactly what they need. And if they don’t take it all, can’t it be the same for them as it is for Utah? The experience alone will alledgedly make them far superior than before. And finally, wouldn’t it be a brilliant kick-in-the-teeth to Carlos Boozer for leaving?

Jun.1 at 12:58 am

Ryan Jones says:
T-Mac also hasn’t been out of the first round in 9 or 10 years, so I think that comparison is already moot.

ForzaMilan says:
When you think of how good Boozer is now…and that Jason Kapono used to be a Cav, didn’t he? Anyway, I believe that the Cavaliers will have to risk Losing Lebron in order to take him all the way to the top. What I mean is, trading important parts like Hughes, Pavlovic and Drew for potential greats that could turn out to be busts. Take huge risks. Pippen came from a Division 3 school right? Steve Nash could collapse at any moment, where did Tony Parker come from, didn’t Cassell win it starting as a rook? Wouldn’t you trade in your Harem of “9″ girls to marry a “10″? They need another “great”, not another “solid”. And Sasha might not be it.

Jun.1 at 1:12 am

Dan says:
@Forza: I think I see where you are going with this, although the future isn’t quite a concern for the Cavaliers franchise right now. Currently, the focus is on taking LeBron, and his cast of role players, to the top. Save that post until sometime after the champions are crowned.

Jun.1 at 1:12 am

JJ says:
much respect to lebron and not to take anything away from him but a lot of this is on flip…there is no way anyone should be allowed to score that many points in a row…even if it meant all five guys on the floor guarding him just to make someone, anyone else make a shot…game tying and winning layups and dunks? wow are you serious…as a pistons fan i hope they will be firing their third coach in a row after a two year stint

Jun.1 at 1:13 am

Chris O'Leary says:
With what Bron did tonight, does anyone really think that San Antonio, or anyone for that matter, could stop him? Players turn it up in the Finals. I don’t care if the Spurs bounce Cleveland in 4 straight, but LeBron’s gonna be on another planet if the Cavs get there.

Jun.1 at 1:15 am

MALONE_FT_CLOCK says:
THIS IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SPURS AND PISTONS. THE PISTONS GET LAZY AND TAKE NAPS ON THE BENCH. THE SPURS CLOSE YOU OUT WITH THE FIRST CHANCE THEY GET AND THEY JUMP ON YOU IMMEDIATELY, THEN PROCEED TO RIP OUT YOUR HEART AND SHOOT IT IN OFF THE BANK

Jun.1 at 1:18 am

Redhouse says:
i think chris webber is the bad luck piece, he’s never going to win a title

Jun.1 at 1:19 am

I told ya’ll Flip is a bad coach. He can’t make adjustments. The Lebron’s stand no chance against the Spurs. Mike Brown is barely winning the coaching battle against Flip Saunders. Can you imagine what Pop is going to do to his a**? It will be a great learning experience for the Cavs though.

Chukaz says:
Nobody has hated on Bron yet, so I will (just a lil’ bit). He got lucky ’cause the pistons suck on D. They played zone on that possesion when LBJ won the game. They whole point of playing zone is to keep the offence of the lane, so how did he get a that shot.

Jun.1 at 1:31 am

Chukaz says:
Bron was good, well real good in this game. He wouldn’t play like that against San Antonio. San Antonio is coached by a great coach, while the pistons are coached by Flip. No comparison there. Plus what great coach would ever be called Flip, are you kidding me.

Jun.1 at 1:36 am

ForzaMilan says:
@Dan: The future might be now. I worry that if they get past Detroit and manage to give the Spurs a difficult challenge, or even win, that the Cavaliers will attempt to go through the next season hoping that this current lineup will only get better. I love the Cavs, each of their players, but non of them sans Bron is overly smart or overly tough. The closest thing they have to a potential wingman for Bron with those attributes is Pavlovic. Sasha?! Sasha Pavlovic??!! But it takes balls to chuck up those shots when you have zero reputation, Bron is hot, with the game on the line.

didnt flip say something like they made up rules for Lebron, jus like they had it back then for MJ[jordan rules], i was jus wonderin` when is he planning to put them to test? anywho, excellent performance by lebron, but did homeboy get every call there is in the book & few others tht the refs jus made up for him, or what?? jus sayin`, GREAT PERFORMANCE.

Jun.1 at 1:43 am

Homie says:
even more shocking than Cleveland’s complete lack of an offense was Flip refusing to double LBJ. I think it happened once in the last 15 game minutes. Talk about a matchup of coaching titans…but LeBron? Wow. The behind the back crossover pullup on Billups? The two hammers down the stretch of regulation? That’s a next level game for him right there. But they’re still losing to the Spurs, in 5 max.

Jun.1 at 1:47 am

disgruntled suns fan here, three cheers for video games james classic performance. the cavs might have a chance against those dirty spurs. the pistons at least have teyshawn to try and stay in front of him. u think bowen and company stand a chance??? discuss…

Jun.1 at 1:58 am

Dennard says:
@nastruthomas, you can go ahead and throw the regular season out of the window at this point of the season. Believe that.

Jun.1 at 2:11 am

Drolfe says:
Also @nastruthomas, your getting waaaaay ahead of yourself guy. The Cavs were up 3-2 to the Pistons last year, nothing is guaranteed right now. Especially these gritty Pistons who always seem to have at least one series each postseason where they battle back from behind. I hope I’m wrong, LeBron leading his team into the NBA Finals at 22 is flat out crazy and I’m rooting for them.

Jun.1 at 2:13 am

Chukaz says:
Yeah, the Spurs are more of a playoff team than a regular season team. They just focus on getting a good enough record to have home court advantege for a while. They will destroy cleveland if the Cavs get past the pistons (some thing I hope will happen). Come on David Stern do what you do and get the Cavs into the Finals.

Jun.1 at 2:16 am

Chukaz says:
Hey Slam, can we get an update on Kobe. One of you said that Kidd was going to L.A for the fat kid. Is that true or was it just some random thought you wanted to get out there?
Is vince going to florida. Damn it give me something.

Jun.1 at 2:18 am

Dennard says:
Yeah Cleveland damn sure isn’t out of the woods with Mike Brown’s coaching. Good grief, the only reason his coaching isn’t being scrutinized more is that Flip Saunders has been 10 times worse. Flip have you ever heard of a double team? I know they attempted to on some occasions, but on the last defensive possession, what the hell was the defense doing? You have to make him attempt a jumper in that situation. Or triple team him, it wasn’t like Eric Snow would have hit a jumper to win the game. Man, what the hell game was Flip watching?

Jun.1 at 2:18 am

So sorry. I don’t appreciate the cavs, but jesus you are a monster Mr. James. Rooting for ya all the way from now on. And please posterize duncan in the finals again, it’s a sight for sore eyes. What was pretty shocking was that he was able to get so many dunks in the 4th… and when he couldn’t, he was hitting those crazy jumpers. I was watching the overtimes with my usually-stoic Dad and was like “Lebron is playing like an animal. A predator.” Unbelievable.

Jun.1 at 2:35 am

Darksaber says:
Dirk is so going to get a heckling from me when he comes to camp in a month. Damnit, this is what an MVP does. Do what it takes to win, my jaw was on the floor most of the 4th quarter and during 2 overtimes. Last time i had that was with Wade last playoffs (also against detroit) and MJ years ago. Holy christ… This guy’s 22. Ohmygahhh

So, I am on vacation, down in Cabo San Lucas. It is 90 degrees all day, plenty of surf, just relaxing as could be. The condo I’ve got down here gets espn and espn2, but they are geared towards Latin America. For instance, Ginobli! is referred to strictly as Manu and Spurs highlights are pretty much Manu and Oberto. It’s pretty classic. Unfortunately, I do not get TNT. Went online to check the score, and realized that the game had just gone to overtime. Ran downstairs and caught the overtime periods. All I can is wow. And thank you to Lebron for giving us what we want. Pretty incredible that he has basically coasted all year, and has his team on the brink of the Finals. And it’s not like his teammates are very good either. Absolutely incredible…

“Coach Westhead decided to put point guard Magic Johnson at pivot instead, and on the Sixers’ home court, he dominated with 42 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and three steals, lifting the Lakers to a Championship. The NBA acknowledged Johnson’s clutch performance as one of the finest individual games ever, although he’s only 21 years old” You know… If you didn’t watch it, Lebron tonight was along the same lines as that. He didn’t win a championship (yet), just took a commanding lead and home court advantage in the Eastern conference finals. By the way thats who he’s more reminiscent of, Magic not Jordan. The Best part was he didn’t just get hot from outside, he had the whole arsenal at his disposal and limitless energy. Did You c Those 2 Dunks!? The only problem is I don’t like his self-proclaimed nickname, “The King”, is it too soon to call him “Mr. 4th Quarter”?

Probably, due to the similiarites in ages at this point in their carreers. As someone who was 16 years old watching MJ dismantle the legendary Celts one afternoon on CBS and spending an ordinary Thursday night watching an extraordinary performance by another young cat on the “it’s my time” tip, let’s just say life as a fan is good, real good, this morning.

Wow…what a preformance. As a guy who has been pulling for the Pistons all season long this game was frustrating. I mean the door was open, but you cannot deny true greatness. How much do you guys wanna bet now that every year come May/June we are gonna debate who is the best player every year. It’s kinda disheartening knowing Detroit was the doormat for the both of these guys ascension to greatness. I dont know if Detroit needs to surrond themselves with a superstar to takeover games. Granted Billups is great on his own, but what I found hauntingly similar to last year is when a big time player breaks there defense on the other end the struggle to find offense and they have a coach who preaches offense (see last year’s 64 win reg season and the accquirement of C-Webb this year). I’m stunned they struggle to get shots down and good GOD do they need someone who can penetrate the paint and have a slasher! Lebron played incredible but you cannot deny greatness. At somepoint it blosooms whether it’s Wade, Jordan or Lebron. Not to spoil the party on anything but is a Cleveland-San Antonio series really any better than a Pistons-Spurs series? I mean Cavs as a team play slow defense too and what happens if the Spurs can consistently shut down Lebron while countering with Manu and Mr. Gabrielle Solis with Duncan in the paint? I mean San Antonio is a hell of a lot of more disciplined than Detroit (latley anyway) and will America stick around to watch the Lebron show if it unravels against a vet Spurs team, the game scores could get ugly and what happens when the causal fans and non-basketball fans who have heard of Lebron watch the ship sink against a “boringly” methodical Spurs team? Guess it wont matter….. Props to Lebron, god speed the Pistons. Spurs in 5

Mark says:
Bring on the Spurs ? Be careful what you wish for. One of two things will happen in that series - both of them with the same result. The Spurs can let Bron get his and single cover him and win the series in a sweep with Lebron averaging 50 or they can take the ball out of Lebron’s hands running double teams at him and win in a sweep. Either way it doesn’t matter. No way can the Cavs beat the Spurs in a series. The Pistons are losing because they are playing terrible. Sheed is out of sync - Prince is a ghost and when I was watching that game last night - I thought I was watching the Mavs - Heat again - only instead of watching D Wade beat 5 guys I watched Lebron do it. How can you not run two guys at him and get the ball out of his hands ? You really prefer to let him get an iso at the top of the key ? really ? Flip is a head coach and a guy like Michael Cooper or Kareem can’t get a job ? DJ couldn’t get a head coaching job in the L before his passing but Flip can ?

I can’t believe that Reggie Miller totally and repeatedly talked right over and through both Kenny AND Sir Charles. What a d*ck. He should not be on the air in any capacity. I’d much rather see Cleveland go to the finals. I’m not saying the Cavs could damage the Spurs, but I’m at least curious to see what would happen. The only thing I would be curious about in a Det-SA final is if Billups could play bad enough for him NOT to opt out of his contract.

It got to the point where I was wondering if Reggie watched the game on LSD and was seeing imaginary Pistons players around Lebron that weren’t there. He just would not let his stupid “point” go. It sucks because Chuck, Kenny, and Ernie are so good but I damn near turned it off because of how annoying Reggie was. It cracked me up when after the Flip interview, Reggie was arguing that Flip proved his “point” that he tried to take the ball out of Lebron’s hands and Kenny flatly said “No they didn’t Reg, I watched the game.” Even he seemed pissed at that point. Also is it just me or does Reggie sound gay occasionally? He sometimes talks in such a whiny, drawn-out voice. Um, not that there’s anything wrong with that. I loved him as a player but damn, please get him off the air.

LeBron is LeBron,MJ is MJ,Bird is Bird,Magic is Magic.LBJ is a combination of Magic and MJ.He’s always thinking pass, but he’s so quick and strong that he can take it to the hole and score if he can’t set his teammates up properly. When Magic and MJ was his age they couldn’t shoot as well and didn’t have his combination of scoring and passing ability.Bird had his combination of scoring and passing(he was in college till 23)but he never had his speed or athletic ability to breakdown offenses in halfcourt making it look like a one man fastbreak. So lets just compare them at the same age and in that case LeBron is head and shoulders abve them all.The only one to compare LBJ to is the Big O who almost averaged a triple double at 22 y/o in his first year in the league:30.5 pts,10.1 rebounds, and 9.7 assists. He used to just HORSE dudes at 6′5″ 220lbs,which was (and still is)big for a PG back then.So stop with those comparisons cause we’re seeing a one of a kind.Mark my words he WILL average a triple double over a season before he’s done.Long live the KING!!!
