The Suns win by playing defense?

And we say goodbye to a living legend

By Sam Rubenstein

One thing I thought I understood about the NBA is that the team that dictates tempo has the advantage. Whoever determines what style of ball will be played, should win the game. Mike D’Antoni pulled an Avery, and shifted his starting lineup so Krazy Eyed Kurt Thomas could offset some of what Tim Duncan does in the low post. The results were that he made life a little harder for Timmy while hitting 6 of 7 shots himself. Phoenix played a low scoring game (for them) and came away with a blowout win. VERY rare. A 19 point first quarter for the Suns is sort of like a mortal team scoring 4 points in a quarter, and the Spurs led after one. Phoenix slowed down and played a “playoff” type of style, specifically the Spurs style, and they won. That is interesting.

The theme of Phoenix being the fun and gun team that plays no D has been beaten to death. When they talk about how “We’ve got to get stops” to win the championship, people for the most part roll their eyes and see that as all talk. Well, the Suns backed it up and avoided falling into a disastrous 0-2 hole heading to San Antonio. Now the series is tied and they’re off until Saturday. Cub will have much more on all of this.

In the East, LeBron and the Cavs took care of their home court. Now the Nets have to respond. Remember, Houston started out 2-0 in their first round series, and the Jazz got back in it by simply winning their home games. Jake will have more on this game later today.

Time to make you all cry.

It is a very bittersweet day for slamonline. Omar the Gangsta Critic, our star writer and movie reviewer, has moved on to blog for a site that will actually pay him. Congrats Omar! We will miss you and will definitely direct people to the new site whenever that address is known. His final review for us will be up either today or tomorrow. He will be missed, and I’m getting emotional just thinking about it now. I… I can’t go on…

Aw man! For the Sista’s on this blog, we will miss Omar. He never thought we’d like his sexist, quasi-pornographic posts (he and I had a chat about it once), but that’s what made him so lovable! You know how it goes–good girls love tha thugs! Anyway, good luck Omar. I’ll be looking for you in cyberspace.

It’s a tough time for all of us dee.
Excellent question Keith. I’ve been wondering the same thing. Perhaps the league is stalling to hide from the embarrassment of the MVP not playing in the playoffs. That’s what I would do if I were them.

O, say it ain’t so! The two best line’s EVER in the same movie review, as per Omar: 1. Rose McGowan can get it with a wooden leg, machine gun leg, however and wherever. 2. I still can’t stand Rosario Dawson (Sorry, Kha). Looks like a dude with that wig piece. O, we’ll be looking for you!

Ryan Jones says:
The Cavs are playing so well right now, I think they might actually take a game off the Pistons.

May.9 at 9:28 am

W. Mack says:
I was thinking the same thing last night Ryan. Presumably, both teams will be unbeaten in the playoffs when they meet each other. Watching LeBron in the post game presser last night, this guy is feeling himself right now. “I mean, they shot 52% from the field, and we only shot 44%, and we still won by 10. (smirk) Hmph. We just play good defense, man.” Yeah. It’ll be interesting to see, though.

Keith says:
Sam, have you guys ever thought about having an office MVP? Clearly Omar has done a Dirk and left too early to be considered now…

May.9 at 9:31 am

James says:
Im starting to think that there will be no MVP award this year, just to avoid any Dirk-related embarrassment

May.9 at 9:35 am

K22C says:
@keith-That is also my name.
@ryan- I think the cavs have a shot at taking pistons to game seven. LeBron wants it man.
@sam&keith- for some reason i think the MVP is still in the playoffs.

So O gotta go, huh? Dayum! Congrats to getting a paying gig but you will be missed…especially when The Wire returns. I’ll be checking the new blog. The NBA is indeed the devil for putting Spurs/Suns on so late. Suns need to file harrassment charges on Ginobili & Bowen for all that groping. I felt violated watching some of it. If STAT can get off for 48 instead of 2Q, my blood pressure might go down a tad. Sam, you wrong for the Krazy Eyed Kurt tag because dude put in work last night.

deestarbuckz says:
Sternbot has to figure out how to get the public to actually believe that the vote is not rigged after the announcement is made that Dirk is NOT the M.V.P.
I am feeling real good about my Cavs right now. There are still those moments when the ball just stops on offense and everyone is watching ‘Bron ‘Bron, but wouldn’t you do the same? Defense and rebounding! What a concept! Shouts to Sasha for finding himself!

Ryan Jones says:
Mack, personally, I’m NOT presuming the Cavs will sweep the Nets — their record in Jersey the past few years is abysmal, which I only know because I’ve seen just about all of LeBron’s disappointing trips to the swamp in person since he came into the League. My guesses, since you didn’t ask:
Cavs over Nets in 5 (or 6… or 7)
Pistons over Bulls in 5…
Pistons over Cavs in 5 or 6.
But do me a favor and only hold me to that if I end up being right.

W. Mack says:
Ryan,
I’ll try not to hold you to it. But I just don’t see Chicago taking a game off of Detroit. These guys are on another level right now. Their only shortcoming is their coach, which, in retrospect, could be the cause of them losing a game were it to happen. Cleveland and Jersey - You’re right. The games have been too close, and although Vince, at times, makes me ashamed to say that I’m a Carolina fan, I don’t think Jason Kidd will allow his team to be swept; not against this team at least. But I think it’s safe to say that we all agree that Cleveland advances barring an injury to LeBron

Lebron is playing like a beast right now. It puzzles me how these teams with Marquee players who don’t play defense, ie: Lebron, T-mac, Iverson in 2001, manage to play such great defense. The lakers need to get some veteran guys who play D.

Chicago will win the next two at home, but probably lose games 5 and 6 just the way they did last year against the Heat. I like the Bulls, but they seem to be a year away from going to the finals.
