Links: Kobe Says “Trade Me”
Let’s find him in the A?
First he zigged, then he zagged, now he’s zigging again. And I’m not talking about Dr. Jerry Buss.
Kobe came out today and told Stephen A. Smith that he wants to be traded…
“I would like to be traded, yeah. Tough as it is to come to that conclusion there’s no other alternative, you know?”
This is in direct conflict with what 24 wrote yesterday, when he said…
“I have NOT asked to be traded, I don’t want to be traded and I have given no ultimatums or demands of being traded.
I love it here in LA, my family loves it here.
I’ve been a Laker fan my whole life. A REAL Laker fan! I’m talkin Silk Wilks days, and know the history of the Lakers going back to George Mikan era. I WANT to retire a Laker and contend for titles.”
Or not. (And say this for Kobe: He’s great at stealing the spotlight from the rest of the NBA when his team’s out of it.)
OK, so now it’s out there. Mutoni wonders if this is the end of the Kobe era in LA.
Let’s assume it is. So who gets him?
And is there any chance my Hawks can get him from the Lake Show? Maybe Josh Smith, the 3 and the 11 pick?

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m assuming his no-trade clause means he gets to approve his eventual destination (if there is one). And Atlanta would NOT be it. First of all, he’d be even further from the playoffs than he is in L.A. (considering what they’d have to give up to get him). And Billy Knight makes Mitch Kupchak look like a cross between R.C. Buford and Theo Epstein.

s dot: I think you’re right to an extent—at least as related to the timing—but on the other hand I think Kobe really IS frustrated. He should have just signed with the Clippers or the Bulls in the first place. It REALLY sucks for the Clippers, because there’s no WAY they can trade for Kobe ever. Bad enough to send him to a team that plays in the same conference, let alone one who plays in the same BUILDING. Hey, let’s say for argument’s sake he does get traded this offseason. Does No. 8 still go up in the rafters?

Well, his little tah tah is of latin ancestry and the weather is warm, and then there’s that big guy who helped him to three championships, and then there’s that other clever (some would say snake-in-the-grass) fellow who brokered the most complicated trade in herstory… Hmmm? The Kobster in Black and Red, running alongside a guy who gets up eight (out of nine) times…

The more I think about it the more hilarious it becomes. Here’s this guy who wanted to be THE MAN in L.A.–did he really believe that the team would sign another superstar when he obviously couldn’t get along with the other one they had??

Russ Bengtson says:
Can’t imagine the Heat getting Kobe without giving up Wade. I think the only plausible destinations are Chicago, New York (just because it’s a huge market and they do have a bunch of young assets), and MAYBE Atlanta. With Philly as something of a dark horse.

Cheryl says:
Ray Allen nailed it on the head a few years ago, huh? Well, a lot of folks had been complaining about the Durant/Oden sweepstakes making the West even stronger. Now, maybe a trade to the East for Kobe (How about Philly, Khalid?) will even things out a bit. Maybe he should go to Orlando or Charlotte and make the Southeast interesting?
May.30 at 2:05 pm
white hot eboy says:
Cheryl, I love you but are you high right now?How do we get it done with 7 nobody’s as trade bait? I think we better be resigned to the fact that 24 is going to be in Bulls black & red or maybe Charlotte, playing for his idol. Both have alot of young, good players to deal. And he has to come to the East. The Lakers can’t be dumb enought to let him stay out West, can they?

OK, buzz is fading… I think Khalid is right, they will fire Kupchak and do what’s necessary to bring in Kidd or KG to appease Kobe. There really is no scenario that I can imagine that doesn’t have Kobe in the purple and gold. Kobe sells tickets. Once Buss sobers up (and takes his hands out the cookie jar, if you know what I mean… 23 year old?) he’s going to make a call, grovel at the feet of the true “King” of the NBA, ask for forgiveness, and then open his wallet to whatever all-star is tired of their old team: Billups, KG, Kidd, Carter, Pierce, or any combination thereof. This is going to turn out to be an interesting off season. Wow.

What about the Jazz?Would they give up Deron and Mehmet and Millsap for the chance to put Kobe alongside Boozer?Probably not, but they’re really not gonna win titles with the team they have right now if they have to play teams with decent shooting guards. They could probably find a have decent point to stick with Kobe and Boozer and Kirilenko, and wouldn’t that be pretty formidable?Maybe they’d have to trade Kirilenko, I think he’s making more money than he’s worth…I’m rambling but it seems like they have a shot cause they have a bunch of guys who aren’t making max money but are still really good. What’s Boozer’s contract worth, like 60 mill right? And Deron’s still on his rookie contract.Mehmet’s making a little less than Boozer I think.AK’s the only one making close to max money.I think they could swing it.

Julian says:
damn. kobe IS the lakers. in my mind he’s inextricably connected to purple and gold. can we really trust mamba right now though? yesterday he seemed to have so much conviction in the message he posted saying that he was a staunch Laker and that he didn’t want to be traded. what’s going on with the relationship between him and phil jax right now? are there things going on we dont know about? i mean i know kobe has reason enough as it is to want to be traded, but one cant help but wonder.
kobe to the bulls? ok russ, let’s seriously consider this. i’m a bulls fan too, but unlike you, kobe’s my favorite player. first of all, let’s think of the import that kobe being in MJ’s chicago black & red would have. is it poetic justice? or is it blasphemy? we know kobe has modeled himself after Mike, and we know he’s the closest thing there’s been to Mike since He bowed out for good. would kobe be carrying on MJ’s legacy in bringing the bulls back to glory? are us chicago fans ok with this?
and then the trade itself. gordon and nocioni and a draft pick for 24? ouch. we love those guys. but its kobe. if we had hinrich and kobe in the backcourt with deng on the wing and wallace and tyrus thomas in the frontcourt and duhon and sefolosha coming off the bench, that’d be kind of sick. i cant believe it isn’t far-fetched to talk about kobe being on the bulls right now…so if we got him, would that alleviate to a certain extent our lack of an experienced offensive big man?

DA KID says:
I agree with Khalid, there’s no way u trade the best player in da L! No way, but, if they have to da only places that might have enough pieces is New York & Chi-town, for obvious reason, and of course if they are stupid enough to trade em to da west, Dallas is a possiblity, Phoenix (D’antoni-kobe got mad love for him and that’d be sick as hell) or maybe Portland or Seattle, but the reality of the situation, there’s no way they’ll get equal value for KB24 so there’s no way he’s going anywhere unless he pulls a Lance Briggs, let me know what ya think holla back.

Ryan Jones says:
I’m listening to this L.A. radio interview (thanks for the link, Ben), so what the hell — here’s some game notes (Warning: I may be a hater):
*Others have done it in recent days, and now Kobe’s doing it himself—comparing himself to KG. Specifically, he’s saying he doesn’t want to “end up like” Kevin Garnett, stuck on a team he’s been loyal to for years with no chance of contending for a title on the horizon. Ok, great, fair enough — but PLEASE don’t forget that you’ve already won three titles and KG has none, and PLEASE don’t forget that you spent the first 8 years of your career playing with the most dominant big man of his era, while KG’s best teammate has been a past-his-prime Sam Cassell. I respect you wanting to win again, man, but please don’t forget your situation.
*Is Kobe gonna cry? Because I think Kobe’s gonna cry.
*The one radio host feels compelled to point out that he was the captain of his college football team. I’m not sure why this matters, but I know I don’t give a sh*t, and I’m guessing Kobe doesn’t, either.
*Here’s a quote: “Early in my career, I never focused on or worried about public perception.” I don’t know how we’re defining “early,” but remind me to transcribe the in-depth, 1-on-1 interview I did with Kobe back in ‘02, when he talked about almost NOTHING BUT how people perceive him, and how much he thinks about it.
*”You don’t escape Barney. Those songs he sings are too damn catchy.” True indeed, man. True indeed.
*A reminder that Kobe has two young daughters, and that they’re already trying to imitate Beyonce and Shakira. Karma, dude.
*Kobe is so smart. SO smart. And that’s a big part of why all this is going on. Manipulative people are rarely stupid.
*Radio guy: “There’s an article on Yahoo! today that (Jerry) West is livid. Have you had a chance to talk to him? Is he livid at you?”
Kobe: “No. I don’t really know, but I’m sure he’s not livid with me.” Naturally, I go to Yahoo! to check the link to Adrian Wojnarowski’s column. The headline: “West Livid With Kobe.” Yeah…
*SHAQ! Kobe is mad indignant talking about this, and somewhat understandably. In a way, he’s on-point — it’s not Kobe’s fault that Shaq left. It’s Jerry Buss’ fault, and it’s Mitch Kupchak’s fault, and it’s Shaq’s fault, AND it’s Kobe’s fault. Group effort. I was still technically a Laker fan at the time, and I remember not being mad that Shaq had to go. It sure seemed like one of them had to, and Kobe being the younger of the two and the one who seemed like he might still be improving, it seemed like the right move. Regardless, Shaq wouldn’t have left, or HAD to have left, unless Kobe was there and they didn’t get along. Everybody’s guilty. Plenty to go around.
*Kobe on the Lakers’ front office: “That place… it’s a mess.” I don’t doubt it. But didn’t you probably know that when you re-upped?
*Kobe on the Lakers’ front office, Part II: “Don’t throw me under the bus.” Did he mean “Don’t throw me under the Buss”? And if so, was he referring to Jeannie? That would at least explain the tension with Phil…
*Here’s the thing: If Kobe really re-signed with the Lakers based on being told that they were going to try and rebuild the team and contend again immediately, he’s got every right to be angry that they haven’t delivered as promised. And obviously, I have nothing but respect for dude wanting to win so badly and not just cruising the rest of his career. But when you contradict your own spoken/written words in consecutive days, don’t your sort of make it hard for people to believe the rest of your story? Yes. Yes you do. All I know is, I’m REALLY glad my SLAM stint has minimized my team-specific fandom, because instead of being heartbroken like I would’ve been 10 years ago, I’m just really intrigued at watching how this all breaks down. It’s fascinating. F*cked up, but fascinating.
*”This is the truth. The truth is coming out now. This is the truth.”—Kobe Bryant, May 30, 2007

I will never be convinced that Kobe and Shaq’s personal issues didn’t contribute to that, Max. I’m sure you’re right, but I’m equally sure that’s only part of the story. Like I said, there’s plenty to go around.
May.30 at 3:11 pm
Max Airington says:
I agree Ryan. Kobe was quoted in Phil’s book as saying that Shaq would be a BIG factor in his leaving and I’m sure he let mangment know that too. And Phi is the biggest snake of them all, so it really was just a volatile situation of powerful people using each other for their own personal gains. Like, um, Hollywood.

Max Airington says:
And personally, I’d like to see Khalid in something from Britney’s house of rat tail extensions…
May.30 at 3:13 pm
Cheryl says:
Man, I just listened to the interview and Kobe sounds like he wants to cry. Why do I feel like this is a manipulation? His salary makes it such that Chcago would have to gut its team in order to get him there. Are they really willing to give up Gordon and Deng plus pieces? The Knicks have enough contracts to match up, but they’re bad contracts. Maybe Steph, Curry, Lee, and picks? Maybe that works? Who are the other $20M players that could be traded straight up? KG, Shaq, and who else makes that kinda dollars? But if you don’t trade him, you’ve got a disgruntled player on your hands next year. This is getting more and more intriguing.
May.30 at 3:19 pm
Jason says:
I have no sympathy at all for the guy. But if you traded KG for Kobe (won’t happen, I know, just making a point), KG would still have one of the best supporting casts of his career and that’s really sad. Now there’s someone who I feel sorry for. When half an Odom, Parker, Vujacic, Kwame and Walton are better than your current situation, that’s really not saying much in your favor.

check out the espn trade machine. for my bulls, we could conceivably trade the two bens to get kobe. we absolutely cannot give up hinrich or deng. and i’d love to keep thomas too. i think the two bens and our #9 (or ten?) draft pick would suffice. but phoenix has the pieces too, and there’s talk of a huge boston/laker trade. seattle and portland could pull it off as well, along with dallas. no matter where he goes, its going to be weird but exciting to see kobe in a different jersey to start off next season.

Steve O says:
Players with contracts who stick with Kobe’s (some may require alittle help) go as follows: KG, Jermaine O’Neal, McGrady, Pierce and to lesser extent (less years) Steph, Jesus, JKidd, and AI. Obviously not all of those players are on teams where a trade is possible or even being considered but by the numbers they are the closest.
May.30 at 3:48 pm
pete says:
“Maybe Steph, Curry, Lee, and picks?” as a knicks fan i hope not…i dont mind marbury but id rather throw frye in. and theres no way we can give up curry….hes pretty much the untouchable guy on the roster after all the picks we got swindled for in trading for him. why would they even want curry with bynum? they would need another sg which id be glad to part with.

Allenp says:
Yo Ryan. That Yahoo story never actually quotes Jerry West. If quoted a whole bunch of unnamed confidants but no West. In fact, the writer allows quite a few people to take shots at Kobe without using their names. I’ve never understood that about sports journalism. The only reporters who use more unnamed sources than sportwriters are political writers and both groups seem to be constantly advancing the agendas of their cronies in the business. Somebody must notice this.
May.30 at 4:04 pm
Julian says:
wallace’s contract takes up lots of space…i’d love for him and kobe to be together but we’d have to trade like 5 guys otherwise.
May.30 at 4:08 pm
Ryan Jones says:
Fair point, Allenp, and that absolutely should raise red flags —but in fairness, to your question, sports writers and political writers use unnamed sources for the same reason: a lot of people who have interesting things to say and secrets to tell can’t afford having other people know they’re the ones talking. That much should be obvious.
Anyway… I happen to know this reporter — we used to work together — and whatever his rep, he hasn’t had a lot of success in the business in a relatively short time by making sh*t up. You don’t have to trust me, but you’ll have to trust me when I say I bet his source is good.
But here’s a better question — or actually, two: If you’re Jerry West, how would you feel about Kobe attaching his future to you when he apparently hasn’t even spoken to you about it? And in general, based on what we do know about Kobe, does the overriding point of the column not make a lot of sense?

I think what’s lost in all this is how much all basketball fans, not just the fanboys that watch ESPN, care more about where Kobe goes than how the conference finals are shaping up. I mean, the meadia coverage only adds to the fire, but there really is a collective yawn from the community about this years playoffs, aside from the warriors. And that’s WITH LeBron still playing. Yes, the face of the league, supposedly, is still in the meadia spot light and we care more about Kobe. hmmmm… He sure is a drama queen, but we sure can’t get enough of em. Is it fair to say that his destination is more interesting than the upcoming Finals? I’m afraid so…

This is the only reasonable trade i’ve seen. It involves the Lakers, Wolves, and Nuggets. The players are Kobe, Odom, Radmanovic, Bynum, Kenyon Martin, Iverson, J.R. Smith, and Garnett. The Lakers would have a starting lineup of Iverson, J.R. Smith, Luke Walton, Garnett, and Mihm/Brown. The Nuggets would start Steve Blake, Kobe, Carmelo, Nene, and Camby. The wolves could start Foye, Ricky Davis or Marko Jaric, Odom, Kenyon Martin, and Bynum. Throw in some player for salary reasons or a draft pick and this deal could happen.

Memphis needs Kobe, had the worst record, and didn’t get the #1 draft pick, they need someone, Kobe would fit in pretty well there, but Memphis would have to trade #4 draft slot, Mike Miller, and mybe Gasol, but I doubt he’ll go there, ‘cuz Memphis has nothing…

imagine this starting lineup:
nash, kobe, raja (after some group consultation), amare, and kurt thomas. surely the suns could trade the matrix, diaw and barbosa. that way shawn would actually have something decent to complain about, we could see if he really is that good and why wouldn’t you want kobe scoring 40 a game. with nashty it would be too easy……..

obviously this withdrawl suddenly means he didnt like where the trade wuz heading i think he pulled out in hope that another team cud cum out with funds i think he needs to be in a position where only him and 1 otha player is good so that he can get lots and lots of glory cuz his ego is like… gasoline its the only thing that keeps him in lengendary status

SMOKE u must be on double doses of PCP if u think that “only in a video game fantasy league” trade u suggested has any chance. U call that REASONABLE…
Let me guess, next thing u’ll post is the Blazers should take YOU with the #1 pick instead of Oden or Durant.
REASONABLE… u gotta be f*%king kidding P.S. Hey Laker fans getting Jason Kidd only gets u into the 2nd round to get beat again by the Suns, or by Spurs, Mavs (if they wake up intime 4 next years playoffs), or the Nuggets (who with a full season of AI & Melo together will win their division & contend). Kobe should pray 4 Jermaine O’Neal cause Garnett is out of reach.

I say trade him to the sonics, for next years 1st round pick. That way we will see Durant and kobe play together. Then my favorite west team will finally come back into power since the payton/kemp era.

I think that Kobe needs to recognize that yeah hes good probably the best in the nba right now but any team that would be able to either afford him and would be interested would not b able to contend for a title no where in the near future look at his options stay in LA and work with a good young team or get traded to a worse young team like the knicks atl boston or somewhere of that type and ya’ll know as well as I do none of those 3 teams can contest

Zach, you’re nuts. If LA trades Kobe to Phoenix, they have to face him 4 time every year and he will MURDER them every time. No GM will trade a contributing player to a team in their conference or division, especially a star like Kobe. Forget about it. The Chicago deal is more likely, I think. They’ll have to find a big man somehow if they come off Ben Wallace though. Bynum is good, but Big Ben is a potential Hall of Famer. If they could get Kobe for Deng & Gordon, that would be sweet. Everybody wins. But a guy I play ball with who is originally from LA brought up a good point: Fans there pay $2000 for some seats. In order to satisfy these fans, they will need a superstar. Gordon and Deng are straight, but far from superstars. Fans won’t pay that type of bread to see an average team. Does anyone remember how their attendance looked when the Lakers had Sedale Threatt, Elden Campbell, and Vlade Divac? Granted, they were a playoff team, but they did not satisfy the fans, as shown by the empty seats. LA needs a superstar and Kobe needs help, on the court and off. This guy is crazy. I guess losing does that to you.

Come to chicago. imagine it hinrich, deng, nocioni, wallace and KOBE. Dream team.It would be like the Jordan era with the likes of Rodman and Pippen. Maybe Kobe could lead the Bulls to another title. Trade Gordon and Thomas plus a 1st round draft pick, and maybe the Bulls might start playing a little better this season.
