Links: How The Kobe Circus Could End

You’ve gotta be Kidd-ing…

by Lang Whitaker

He zigged again. Hours after he said he wanted to be traded on Stephen A. Smith’s radio show, Kobe went on Dan Patrick’s radio show, said he’d spoken to Phil Jackson and…actually, he doesn’t want to be traded. Sayeth Kobe:

“I don’t want to go anywhere, this is my team. I love it here. I called Phil, man, he and I talked, it was an emotional conversation, but he just said, ‘You know what, Kobe? Let us try to figure this thing out.’ Phil is a guy I lean on a lot.”

So the trade talk is off.

At least for Kobe.

(By the way, from now on I’m calling Kobe “The Maestro” for the way he’s magically conducted the media over the last few days. He’d tell one guy one thing, then a few hours later, after that reporter probably felt he had a great scoop, he’d tell another guy a completely opposite thing. It was masterful. Kobe now becomes The Maestro.)

Anyway, what could Phil Jackson have told The Maestro to keep him around?

How about this? The Lakers are going to get Jason Kidd.

At least, that’s what I’m hearing from someone in the know.

Kidd goes to L.A., and Bynum goes to Jersey. Soon. The Bynum Brigade might need to establish an East Rutherford chapter.

(And while we’re at it, I hear Vince is going to be heading to Orlando.)

Could this all be wrong? Of course. Maybe I’m getting played like the rest of the media was. But I don’t think it’s wrong. If I’m right I’ll remind you about it often. If I’m wrong, I’ll delete this post.

So Kobe gets Kidd, Orlando gets Vince, and the Nets get Andrew Bynum and a reduced payroll while they prep for their move to Brooklyn.

Just throwing this rumor out there. Discuss…

“If I’m wrong, I’ll delete this post.” HILARIOUS! I know you wouldn’t teally do that Lang, because that would be a George Bush move. And George Bush doesn’t care about black people!

quoted from the naterob story : 1) “When I’m playing basketball, it’s like I got a little devil on one shoulder and a little angel on one shoulder, and the Devil’s like, ‘Go ahead and bounce it and throw it off the glass!’ And the angel’s like, ‘Now Nate, you know if you do this…’ That’s how it is sometimes. Like Kobe said, It’s like Babe Ruth: You swing big. You might miss, but if you hit it it’s going to be a home run. So you can’t hold back, man. Anything can happen.”

kidd is great, and he definitly showed that age was not a factor in this years playoffs but this can only be one of many moves for the lakers to make, if they bring in kidd they still need to bring in another big man unless they think mihm will be healthy and productive

If Kidd comes to LA, throw the triangle out the window, does kidd, kobe, and odom make a contender in a stacked west?? I don’t think so, it still doesn’t fix their lack of a tough minded big, this is just a move to calm the fire, but ultimately get Kobe and LA nowhere.

hey lang…are we talking about sign and trade for vince or just going and signing as a FA?…also don’t the lakers need to send back some large contracts in addition to bynum to match j.kidd’s salary?

Lang, is this a record for most Links posts by you in one day? And who would you say is the second-most popular subject to generate comments after Kobe? Is anyone else even 25% of the provoker that KB is?

Lang Whitaker says:
Ben, I’m warming up for the Finals. Wasn’t planning on writing anything tonight but then I heard about this and figured I should get something posted.
And JJ, I haven’t checked it out but I think Orlando and Jersey can both offer Vince the same amount under the cap. And if that’s correct it would basically be up to Vince whether he wanted to do a sign-and-trade or not. Also, yeah, contracts for Kidd and Bynum are way off. I’d guess L.A. would include Radmanovic and other guys to even it up.

May.30 at 10:39 pm

i just wanna kno what happened to my hawks

May.30 at 10:56 pm

Phila says:
Lang, thats the whackest thing I’ve ever heard.

May.30 at 10:57 pm

Dan says:
This is absolutely ridiculous! I am so sick of hearing about all of this Kobe garbage. I mean sure, it is moderately entertaining, but reading what everyone has posted on here makes me laugh. If you look carefully, you can actually see hearts being broken through written words. I just can’t believe how excited some people get over Kobe-talk. Let us just pretend that these rumours are true, due to Kobe’s no-trade claus, he would have to approve any move that is made. Now, do you REALLY think he would even consider the Hawks or the Magic? F*ck no! ! ! You people are ridiculous. . .

May.30 at 11:00 pm

David says:
Since the Suns, Mavs, Bulls, and Warriors are all out now, are these not the most boring playoffs in memory? The Spurs are too good for the Jazz. Unless Lebron can get the Cavs past the Pistons, will anyone care?

May.30 at 11:04 pm

Dean says:
that sounds good for the lakers and orlando. i guess jersey will have a lot of money for free agents.

May.30 at 11:06 pm

Justin H. says:
DAN : APPERENTLY HE’S CONSIDERIN PLUTO….AND IF U LISTENED U WOULD KNO HE DONT CARE WHO HE PLAYS FOR (HE SAID IT)…. AND IF U NOTICED… IF U ADD KOBE TO A TEAM (THATS 30+ POINTS A NIGHT) SO IT REALLY DONT MATTER WHICH TEAM HE GOES TO BC HE’S GOING TO MAKE THEM A BETTER TEAM REGARDLESS OF HOW BAD THE TEAM IS…AND DONT HATE ON ORLANDO, THEY MADE IT TO THE PLAYOFFS “DA”……OH NOT TO MENTION “HAWKS” HAVE 2 FIRST ROUND “TOP 15″ PICKS….SO HE’D TAKE THEM INTO CONSIDERATION

May.30 at 11:08 pm

Justin H. says:
F***in Spurs

May.30 at 11:35 pm

Dan says:
I’m sorry Justin, but as far as I am concerned, I can’t listen to anything Kobe says. You are seriously going to tell me to listen, when he has changed his mind publicly about 4 times in less then 48 hours about where he wants to play? Come on! ! ! But I think the best part about your response is the fact that you are speaking as if he is going to be traded. If you listened to your beloved Kobe as much as you are preaching, then you would have listened to him deny the fact that he wants to be traded.

May.31 at 12:09 am

Lang Whitaker says:
Stephen A. just described the situation in L.A. as “discombobulated.” Great word.

May.31 at 12:21 am

Justin H. says:
Dan: I Heard Him Say That…..And If U Listened Just A LiL Longer U’d Realize That Kobe Wants Doesnt Want To Be Traded…But He Will Only Stay If The Lakers Get Jerry West Or Make A Move That He Likes (A Move That Will Put The Lakers In Championship Contention)… Knoin That The Laker Organization Has Already Lied To Him .. I Trust That They Wont Make The Big Move And Kobe Will Ask For The Trade…. Oh And Hell Yes… IM WATCHIN ESPN SPORTSCENTER AT 12 O Clock… They Even Asked Kobe “Specifically” If He Wanted To Move To Atlanta….His Reply Was A Chuckle And Then He Said, ” All I Wanna Do Is Play Basketball.”

May.31 at 12:32 am

Reggie Evans says:
Doesn’t this show how Kobe ISN’T cold and calculating? Through all the interviews, he doesn’t come off as manipulative, just as someone trying to figuring it out, who’s unsure of how he feels, changing his mind, softening his stance. Human, basically.

May.31 at 12:37 am

Dan says:
You, my friend, are being far too analytic for a situation such as this. You want there to be some level of truth involved, so you are digging until you find it. Well, to tell you the truth, I was slightly worried after I read your post, so I did a little review of what has transpired over the last few days. Indeed, Kobe has now openly said that he no longer wants a trade. Do you hear that Justin? It’s over. You can stop dreaming now. And as for your comment about the Magic making the playoffs, so did 15 other teams. What’s your point? Clearly making the playoffs is not as big of an accolade as you are making it out to be. Case in point, the Dallas Mavericks.

May.31 at 12:39 am

MALONE_FT_CLOCK says:
VINCENT LAMAR IN ORLANDO WOULD BE A GREAT FIT. BUT WHOS THE COACH??? IS JAMEER NELSON STILL THE PG?? IS GRANT HILL STAYING?? VINCE AND YOUNG DWIGHT WOULD COMPETE FOR MOST POSTERS MADE IN A GAME.-

May.31 at 12:43 am

Dan says:
By the way, I enjoy the convenience factor you are taking advantage of. For your own convenience of making this trade seem realistic, you refer to Kobe’s first radio interview. You also leave out the fact that he said in that very same interview that not even Jerry West could make him want to stay. Then, when it is convenient for you to shift to a latter interview, you do just that. You just referred to the interview in which Kobe stated he doesn’t want a trade, and indeed, he wants to see Jerry West return to the organization. Face it Justin, you are running in circles. You are taking bits and pieces of both, and molding them into one in order to support your own case. I have listened to both. Give it up.

May.31 at 12:43 am

Nico says:
You gotta admit, even though some of this has been kind of annoying- Kobe’s doing what stars like Iverson, Garnett, & Vince should have done. They just sit there wasting their careers (Vince just stops playing all together), while Kobe makes some “suggestions” and then full on says get me out of here. Can you blame the guy for wanting to win?

May.31 at 12:50 am

Zee says:
If this is true, all they need is for Odom to stay healthy and pick up one or two solid rebounder’s, and they may just make the second round…if only kristic was able to come over to LA….maybe the Lakers can ask for nochbar as well. Ugh that’d be nasty. Or maybe Mikki Moore is a option. All in all, kidd is a beast alone but one has to wonder how many years he has left and how will the lakers do when he’s off the floor and Farmar is running the show? ugh.

May.31 at 1:26 am

Chukaz says:
I kinda hope that this is true becuase JKidd and KB24 would be a sick combo. At the same time, I think at (if this is true) they rushed into the trade to make Kobe happy. I think they should have kept Bynum and tell Kobe to chill for a while ’til lamar is healthy then send Odom and the fat kid to Minny for KG. Then again, they could be able to get JKidd and Kobe together, tell kobe to chill ’til Odom is healthy give Luke Walton as much money as you can then send Odom and Luke to Minny for KG

May.31 at 1:42 am

Chukaz says:
I hope the Vince thing is true especially if it isn’t a sign and trade because it would be awesome to have VC and Dwight Howard would make a sick combo and the magic would keep all its other pieces

Dwight Howard won’t get his ball in the post once VC is in Orlando.

Kobe played the media? YOu give him too much credit, Lang. He is a petulant child in a man’s body - nothing more.

May.31 at 6:52 am

seppo says:
Unlike a Gary Payton Kidd is unselfish and intelligent enough to flourish in the triangle. However the Lakers still need a dynamic scorer at forward. If they could somehow manage to get either Gerald Wallace or Artest in addition to Kidd, they´d be a top team. to add some size to their roster, they could sign Paul Shirley for cheap.

May.31 at 7:27 am

asylu says:
problem is though, they’re still going to need a low post presence. 2 guards are not going to bring LA a championship. Isn’t that what NJ thougt when they got Kidd and VC together? Maybe trade for someone like Bogut who isn’t really flouroshing in Milwaukee and put him in a structured offence under Jackson.

May.31 at 7:52 am

eddie says:
The Nets will never trade Kidd. Life without him will be too ugly for the loyal 10,000 nets fands that come consistently.

May.31 at 7:59 am

Seppo:I hope by cheap you mean about $5 a week

May.31 at 8:11 am

Josh says:
What sucks, to get Kidd without Odom, we have to trade Kidd for Bynum-Kwame-Vlad-Cook. That takes half our bench away. Also, that means Mihm would have to be healthy and be the starter. If Odom is included, they will have to send us a PF back. This one could work… Kidd-Collins-Krstic for Odom-Bynum-Vlad-Kwame I like that one a lot more… Kidd-Farmar-Sasha
Kobe-Evans-Sasha
Walton-Desmond Mason (MLE)-Sasha
Krstic-Cook-Turiaf
Mihm-Collins-Aaron Gray (1st R.P.)

For some reason I can’t see Lamar Odom in Indy…

May.31 at 10:40 am

seppo says:
The last two off-seasons came and went without major moves and Kobe remained silent. All true Lakers fans should be thankful that Kobe puts pressure on the management. Jermaine O´Neal is no upgrade to Odom. Both are injury-prone and washed up. O´Neal has even less offensive skills than Odom. The Lakers should do everything to acquire Garnett.

May.31 at 10:56 am

Mark T says:
The deal that the Nets and Lakers discussed in Feb can’t be done anymore. The expiring contracts that filled up most of the salary differential between Kidd and Bynum (about 70MM) have expired. Check the tradechecker on realgm.com. Unless a third team gets involved to take Odom or Brown, for value to the Nets, I don’t think the Lakers can get Kidd.
Conversely, the Nets can get Bryant for VC, Marcus Williams, ‘Toine and a couple draft picks if VC will agree to move to LA, or a third team that wants him gets involved.

kidd would be a nice addition, but he won’t help win them a championship… keep Bynum trade Odom and walton, for Artest and a draft pick. Artest is crazy, but Phil is a genius Bynum, Cook, Ron Ron, Kobe … all they need is a scottie pippen, and a white guy that can drop 3’s

May.31 at 2:59 pm

Justin H. says:
One Thing That Is Worth Mention…. Kidd Wont Help Lakers….The Lakers Need A Big Guy…A Big Guy Who Can Dominate Down Low And Play Defense… Tim Duncan Would Never Want A Trade, STAT Would Never Leave The Talent They Have At Phoenix, Shaq Is Old And I Shouldnt Have Brought His Name Into This, KG Has Too Much Money On His Contract And Is Too Valuable For The Lakers To Go After, Yao…No, So That Only Leaves 2 Options For The Lakers… JERMAINE O’NEAL, AND (NOBODY THOUGHT OF THIS) THEY CAN TRADE FOR A FIRST ROUND PICK AND GET GREG ODEN.

Kobe, for God’s sake wake up dude. You had your three rings and glory days with Shaq. Then, without any support from you, LA lets go of Shaq, creates a whole new team, and you can’t get past first round of playoffs. Just exactly how does Lakers front office create a new championship team around Kobe at this stage of the game????? So they are going to trade one of their promising young big men for Kidd???!!!! Like that’s going to get them into the finals??? Gimmie a break!!!!!!

Bynum along with Odom more than likely will have to go to Indiana for J. O’Neal. Thus, Kidd would only come in a package of Laker players surrounding Kwame Brown.

Re: Kobe being selfish. Yeah. Right. It would be much better for Kobe just to
sit quietly while his management acquires crappy players
to surround him. That’s much better. Just ask Kevin
Garnett. It’s much more noble to quitely play on a team
that sucks than to light a fire under management to
do a better job.

Kobe’s a ill burgerduck! And i hate the Spurs. They corny as hell. I hope the east takes it this year. No matter if it’s Detroit rock city or the Jame’s gang. I think this is very good for the Lakers. We need someone at the point position that can handle the rock. The only problem is that we still have not solved our inside presence. My question is this: “Could the Jermaine O’niel thing still happen with the Pacers?”

May.31 at 6:03 pm

Dan says:
I don’t know if you guys are staying up-to-date, but the latest is that the Lakers are attempting to bring Jermaine O’neal into L.A. in order to convince Kobe to stay. . .

Well Dan There Actually Is Something I Agree With U On Afterall

May.31 at 7:49 pm

Justin?!?!?! You agree with me that the Lakers organization is attempting to bring in Jermaine O’neal?

May.31 at 8:58 pm

Dan says:
Alright Detroit fans, let’s hear it. I am waiting patiently for the senseless b!tching on your behalf regarding the ejection of Antonio McDyees. In all honesty, that most certainly qualified for an ejection, although I am certain that you will all place it upon the “unfair” calls made against you beloved Bad-Boys.

May.31 at 9:35 pm

Stuie says:
What i said in an earlier colum post was right. Call be crazy but i’ve been on lately. I completely told you he just wanted a beter back up. Hes tired of having a sh*ty team. And Kidd is the right fit for an all out scorer. Watch out the Lakers are good agian. Im just kind of disapointed because it would of been nice to Kobe in the east. It would of broken up the confrence difference a bit.

May.31 at 9:56 pm

Dan says:
Stuie, you are doing what eveyone else posting on here is doing: you are turning speculation into fantasy. Nothing is even close to official as of yet, and you may be simply geting your hopes up. Perhaps you should consider disregarding your present-tense style, as there is still quite awhile before we can even consider this a reality.

Danny says:
Vecsey is talking about O’Neal (Jermaine) to LA for Odom. If this goes through along with the Bynum for Kidd trade, L.A. would be rocking with Kidd, Kobe, Walton, J.O. and Kwame/Krstic.
L.A. would have to send Vlad and Kwame with Bynum to NJ to make the salaries work. NJ would not be as good but Kwame has only one year on his deal.
Wonder what Indiana would settle for to balance the deal — draft picks?

Jun.1 at 5:22 am

SatelliteTV Addict says:
I would love to see Kidd play for L.A. I don’t mind losing Bynum either. My main concern is that Kobe, Lamar, and Kwame stay with the Lakers.

why would the lakers trade for kidd and give up bynum? makes NO sense

Jun.1 at 2:02 pm

Kobe doesn’t need to leave…but if he does he need to roll right ova here to NC and help us garbage Bobcats…Raymond Felton assisting Kobe = at least a winning season or a very very low seed in the playoffs.

Jun.1 at 4:00 pm

Stuie says:
Even if its not kidd they either need a better back up or the lakers can say so long to kobe.

Jun.1 at 9:35 pm

smoke says:
This is the only reasonable trade i’ve seen. It involves the Lakers, Wolves, and Nuggets. The players are Kobe, Odom, Radmanovic, Bynum, Kenyon Martin, Iverson, J.R. Smith, and Garnett. The Lakers would have a starting lineup of Iverson, J.R. Smith, Luke Walton, Garnett, and Mihm/Brown. The Nuggets would start Steve Blake, Kobe, Carmelo, Nene, and Camby. The wolves could start Foye, Ricky Davis or Marko Jaric, Odom, Kenyon Martin, and Bynum. Throw in some player for salary reasons or a draft pick and this deal could happen.

BO$$: Kobe was asking for a trade because he is tired of losing. If he wanted a winning(record), or a low playoff seed, he wouldnt have asked for a trade BTW, whats the latest on JO to L.A.?
(anyone answer)

Nets have a pretty decent PG in Williams at one-tenth the price of Kidd. Thats why they make the trade. Taking Kwame will save them $10 mil off next year’s salaries. Also, Williams, Jefferson, Kwame, Bynum, Vlad Rad and whatever they get for Carter (they won’t re-sign him if they let Kidd go) should see them back in the playoffs right about where they were this year.
For a team being moved/sold, the plan makes a lot of sense.

I don’t care who they get as long as they can help my man Kobe. KG would be a really good move or even JO7. I would rather have KG because he doesn’t get hear like Jermaine but who cares?

Vince is a bumb… He lost it! Got no more mojo and he need to go to Atlanta or something… That way he can appreciate what the bottom feels like… I would hate to see J-Kidd leave NJ, but he needs a ring…Maybe him and Kobe can do the Damn thing in Tinseltown…
Who knows…

SMOKE u must be on double doses of PCP if u think that “only in a video game fantasy league” trade u suggested has any chance. U call that REASONABLE…
Let me guess, next thing u’ll post is the Blazers should take YOU with the #1 pick instead of Oden or Durant.
REASONABLE… u gotta be f*%king kidding P.S. Hey Laker fans getting Jason Kidd only gets u into the 2nd round to get beat again by the Suns, or by Spurs, Mavs (if they wake up intime 4 next years playoffs), or the Nuggets (who with a full season of AI & Melo together will win their division & contend). Kobe should pray 4 Jermaine O’Neal cause Garnett is out of reach.

Nets Fan New York says:
First off, Kobe needs to stop monopolizing the press. Kidd needs a ring but he won’t go to the Lakers. It’s not the right fit. Besides, if the Nets trade Kidd, they won’t resign Carter, and the team will take a nasty hit. The wound will be too large, the team will be in shambles, and they won’t have any fans come time for their move from the swamps to Bklyn. Williams will make a decent PG but he can’t carry the team quite yet.
