Detroit is cruising and Bowen is kicking

so dirty

By Sam Rubenstein

Utah and Golden State didn’t play last night but there was still a playoff game. Detroit took care of the Bulls once again, this time on the road, and the series is over, other than the inevitable fourth win. Chicago has to have set some kind of record for dominance drop-off from round to round. They swept the champs with ease, and now they will be probably get swept after putting up minimal resistance. The Bulls big splash roster-wise was to steal Big Ben from the Pistons. The Pistons “counter” move was to sign Chris Webber off the trash heap. In the make or break game that could have maybe produced a semi-competitive series, Webber didn’t score a point, and the Pistons still won. Big Ben gets some credit for helping the Bulls get to the second round, and I’m sure down the road they can point back to this year as a learning experience for all of their young players.

Now all that’s left to root for is a Cleveland sweep of the Nets, so we’ll have two teams on 8-0 runs heading into the Conference Finals. For all the talk this season about Dallas and Phoenix and their inevitable showdown of the unbeatable, how funny would it be if that were to happen in the East instead? Oh, speaking of Dallas, as Russ pointed out late last night, reports are leaking that Dirk is the MVP. Not much of a surprise, though he unseats the two-time defending MVP. Congrats to Dirk, despite the thousands of jokes there are to make about him. We’ll have much more on Dirk later today.

A big story coming out now is that Amare is calling Bruce Bowen a dirty player. Yeah? Is that so? Here is the visual proof of the latest Bowen attempt at “defense.” You can’t even call it that, cause it’s a guy who was beat on a play just trying to injure someone. Even if Bowen failed in his mission to remove the Suns answer to Tim Duncan, he’s put the thought in Amare’s head that any time he goes up in the air, it might not be safe to land.

Any other player in the league would get the benefit of doubt. But, when you are constantly referred to as the dirtiest player in the game by everyone from Vince Carter to Ray Allen to even Steve Francis, it’s hard to look at that as an accident. Stay away from Amare’s Achilles! Come on Bruce, it’s one thing to body someone up and be physical, but kicking someone coming off surgery should be a suspension at least. I would say it’s worse than Kobe punching Manu with his follow through. Hopefully Kurt Thomas will step in and take care of the Bowen Collector. Amare can’t even do anything about it himself, cause of his importance to the team vs. Bowen’s importance to the Spurs. If Bowen doesn’t stop it, the only way for the Suns to respond is for Kurt to knock Tony Parker or Ginobili out of the series. Nobody wants anymore star players getting hurt. We’ve had way too much of that this season. Clean it up! Clean it up.

The Utah and Golden State series resumes tonight. Thank you!

Bowen`s a jackass, one hellacious defender, but still a jackass. And that ain`t defense, that`s violence. Still, though, gotta hand it to him, takes guts to try and hurt a monster like Amare, you don`t see me trying to kick full grown tigers in the shins.

Boyd says:
Wonder if Kurt could pull the old Karl Malone and swing one of his granite elbows into Bowen’s eye socket on a defensive board? Just a thought…

white hot eboy says:
There is not one player on the Spurs who would be considered and “enforcer”. Just keep knocking Bowen on his ass with hard picks and give up a couple of fouls to set the tone.

i would love to see crazy eye balls kurt thomas knock the crap out of the bowen collector. a raja bell vs bruce bowen fight could also be interesting.

Does Stern have the power/balls to suspend someone AFTER a game? Just thinking, that if he does he should follow what happens in football/soccer where a panel can decide upon an action after an incident in a game.

All that Bowen-stuff brings up one question here:
How come Bowen didn´t get suspended yet, with him pulling those stunts multiple times ?

Bruce Bowen may play dirty, but Lebron loves genocide!

The only thing Bowen should be collecting after that is a league suspension, which he certainly will get if the L ain’t crooked. So he won’t.

Nadav Mor says:
better headline
“Pistons Cruisin, Bowen Bruisin”?

May.11 at 10:23 am

Sam Rubenstein says:
That would have been better. Oh well.
BTW, Bowen also kicked Steve Nash when he was on the floor. It was one of those “I’m stepping over you BAM! Kick to the ribs moments.” If you’re going to be dirty, do it like Oakley. Bowen is dirty in a cowardly way, waiting for guys to jump or fall when it’s easier to hurt them.

May.11 at 10:42 am

DubsGonDoIt says:
Bowen is a coward!!! I hope he catches one for that 6itch move. They should start Pat Burke next game and right as they’re tipping the game off, Burke could just run right threw Bowen and take him out. I think half of the players in the L would be willing to contribute towards paying off Burke’s fine lol.

May.11 at 10:54 am

K22C says:
Stop hating on Bowen… He plays tuff D. Note- Defensive Player of the Year awards. Those are real. Unfortunately for Kobe and LeBron the MVP isn’t. But back to Bowen, he plays to win, and i respect that.

May.11 at 11:04 am

K22C says:
Also… I just had a random thought. I am a Heat Fan.
-Memphis gets first pick, most likely. I would love for the Heat to do something smart and trade Shaq for 1st pick and pick up Oden. But the Heat prefer old farts.

May.11 at 11:12 am

illydiva says:
I have to agree with Stat on both Manu & Bowen (and Amare’s no biatch like Sugar Ray & Wince), but you can’t risk Kurt during this series. Like Dubs said, it’s gotta be Burke or Jalen Rose (imagine that!). Bowen does play good D, but all that other stuff is dangerous and borders on criminal.

May.11 at 11:13 am

Simon says:
K22C: playing to win? more like playing to injure people. i respect his defensive ability but he’s a jackass for all the little b*tch moves he pulls. i’d love to see him get knocked the f*ck out! linkstigator Pat step up!

May.11 at 11:22 am

StephenJacksonLovesOakland says:
Bowen is a bitch. I hope someone regulates on his ass. Although it’d be some comedy relief seeing Pat Burke go after him, I can’t think of any enforcers on the Suns to step up to the task.

that was on purpose - Bowen is a cunt. If I may be so blunt.

Bryant Reeves says:
If Amare did get hurt on that play could the police charge Bowen with assault? I hate Bowen, always have. Screw the Defensive player of the year award - Bowen’s patented defensive move is to stick his feet under a jump shooter’s legs - see Bryant, Kobe; Carter, Vince; Allen, Ray… I wish I could say that I’m shocked the NBA hasn’t suspended him.

May.11 at 11:46 am

Brian says:
It amazes me how in this so called new NBA that doesn’t allow any hand checking that Bowen can patty cake people on the chest at the top of the key non-stop. Maybe he kicked him because he is so stressed out at the grueling schedule they are making them play?

May.11 at 12:19 pm

Sesa says:
K22C: I guess you’re in spurs bandwagon even though you claimed to be a Heat’s fan.
Bowen used to play good defense, then reality kicks in that he’s not as young and as agile as he used to. So he resorted to those tactics so they can subconciously afraid to attack when guarded by Bowen.
It’s true that a man gotta feed his families but that doesn’t justify his actions to hurt other players on the court.
I really wondered why Gregg Popovich allows this bullshit to happen.

May.11 at 12:19 pm

ALX8725 says:
hahaha I always thought about this: what if one of those jumpshooters (Kobe, VC, Ray Allen) instead of trying to go for the jumpshot, they should just jump as if they were attempting a shot… and as soon as Bowen sticks his feet under them, they should do a full-out two-footed STOMP on Bowen’s toes coming down from their shooting motion. In their defense, they could just say it was Bowen’s fault that he stuck his feet under theirs… and it would break Bowen’s toes and hopefully teach him a lesson for playing dirty!

May.11 at 1:19 pm

K22C says:
man you guys are all hating, people make mistakes… bowen wasnt thinking… i hate the spurs i am just sayin, never before has his “dirty playing” been brought up before this year…. look at other players around the league. Bowen didnt go in the stands and hit a fan. Bowen could have done that to anyone and it wouldnt bother them…. STAT is just a pus*y

May.11 at 1:24 pm

H to the izzo says:
Bruce Bowen must be retarded in that case because he has a history of not thinking

May.11 at 1:26 pm

Bryant Reeves says:
K22C “never before has his dirty playing been brought up before this year?” - yes it has. I remember being at a game in toronto when vince was still on the raps and bowen stuck a foot under his jump shot.

h-wag says:
Has Bowen ever won a DPOY ?
I´m not so sure about that…

May.11 at 1:28 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
What’s funny is that off the court Bruce Bowen is one of the nicest guys you’d ever want to meet. Although there was this time when I went to interview him and came down on his foot and was out for four to six weeks. P.S. Why would anyone have to TRY and hurt Steve Francis? Doesn’t he do that well enough on his own?

May.11 at 1:37 pm

ALX8725 says:
yeah, well the list of people injured by Bowen is quite the resume for DPOY. The last time he won it, I didn’t think he deserved it because everyone on the Spurs just channels people into Timrobot… then I came down on his foot and rolled my ankle. Serves me right for questioning Bowen’s defensive ability.

May.11 at 1:41 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Bowen has never won DPOY. In fact, Marcus Camby’s win this year marked the first win by a guy not named Ron Artest, Ben Wallace, Alonzo Mourning or Dikembe Mutombo in the past decade. (GP, The Admiral, Rodman and Hakeem take care of the rest of the ’90s.)

May.11 at 1:43 pm

K22C says:
@BryantReeves- Vince also has cramps.

May.11 at 1:50 pm

K22C says:
@Russ- you can’t just go say he is a dirty player. he has proven himself as a defensive master. just look at the video games

May.11 at 1:53 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Where did I once say he was a dirty player? This whole board is really starting to confuse me. *quits internet*

May.11 at 1:57 pm

H to the izzo says:
Do you really use video games as a source of a players ability?

May.11 at 2:06 pm

J-Bird says:
@K22C- Id like to hear you call Amare a pu*sy to his face. And Bowen is dirty as hell!

May.11 at 2:06 pm

ALX8725 says:
Russ, you’re right, I couldve sworn he has won a DPOY before… I mean if you were to just think back, wouldn’t it be a logical assumption that Bowen has won a DPOY before? My bad… I could’ve sworn he has won it before though… guess I was wrong.

May.11 at 2:13 pm

k.o. says:
Wow. couldn’t believe my eyes. For the most part I thought he was just a really tenacious defender who got under the opposing teams skin, and ankles, at times. but damn, that’s a gutless play right there.

May.11 at 2:26 pm

Boyd says:
Its a shame the Suns hardest players, i.e Kurt, Raja, Amare (in that order) are so pivotal to this series, so Pat gets my vote. He’s big, he’s bald, he’s Irish, he’s probably played Rugby (if your that bug in the British Isles you don’t get put in the paint at the age of 12 you get put in a scrum) and there’s no better sport than Rugby for pulling feindish, nay life-threatening shit at close range, then looking up with a ‘what, me?’ look at the ref. So Pat definitely gets my vote, 2 minutes into the second, he goes fo a rebound that isn’t there, then ‘aciddently’ goes under Bowens back and turns him neck first onto the hard wood. CRACK. I can see Bowen trying to d-up in game 4 with a white styrofoam neck collar.

May.11 at 2:42 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
Pat Burke does have that stereotypical goon look and Raja is a little bit on the pretty boy side, but Raja might have to be the one to even things out. Kurt Thomas might not be subtle enough.
Pop ordered the code red.

I think you mean soccer when your talking about the “What me” thing.Rugby is the scum sport played by gentlemen, soccer is a gentlemen sport played by scum—rugby is better

May.11 at 3:03 pm

Mike C. says:
Kurt Thomas is too important to the Suns for him to catch a suspension. Eric Piatkoswki is expendable. Let the Polish Rifle get his goon on.

May.11 at 3:03 pm

Reggie Evans says:
STU: Pop, did you order the code red? —
POP: You want answers? —
STU: I think I’m entitled to them. —
POP: YOU WANT ANSWERS? —

May.11 at 3:05 pm

Mike C. says:
By “Kurt Thomas is too important”, I mean that Kurt Thomas is a big body that can play quality D on Duncan, and has 6 really hard fouls to hand out. I also love seeing KT’s crazy google eyes close up when he’s shooting free throws.

May.11 at 3:07 pm

Mike C. says:
When the series goes back to Phoenix, maybe a Suns fan sitting courtside can kick Bowen in the back of the leg when he’s shooting a corner 3.

May.11 at 3:10 pm

Chris says:
pat burke should lay bowen out

May.11 at 3:12 pm

Simmy Sosa says:
It looked to me like Bowen was trying to disrupt the jump not the landing. He was trying to prevent the basket, not injure Amare. I know he has a reputation, but that was a desperate attempt to stop an easy bucket, not injure another player.

May.11 at 3:14 pm

Simmy Sosa says:
And where’s the video of Tony Parker getting undercut and clothes-lined???

May.11 at 3:16 pm

Hersey says:
If Patty Burke makes a surpise appearance in the second quarter just to slap Bowen, I think Stu Jackson might get froggy. Suns need to stay focused, it’s only going to get rougher if they beat the Spurs. With Utah, Detroit and Cleveland looking like winners, the road to a title will be physical. Beating the Spurs will take their best effort so they have to overcome the “dirty” stuff.

May.11 at 3:39 pm

Shiz says:
I think there’s a difference between tugging someone’s shorts a bit when they jump and trying to do injury to someone else. And all that “its just tuff D” shit is (to quote Dustin Hoffman) bullcrap in a chef salad. He’s a dirty guy..His injured more dudes in the past 3 years than Deke’s elbows have ever..now THAT’S an accomplishment!

May.11 at 3:40 pm

k.o. says:
Hersey, I agree, but u also have to send a message that a play like that is not acceptable by any means, against Amare or any other player. i’m not saying they should lay out Bowen, but a few solid elbows would get the idea across…

May.11 at 3:44 pm

mark says:
is this the WNBA or the NBA ? Man the heck up. Amare calling people out ? just like he supposedly got fouled on that dumb shot he took in game 1 with 8 ticks on the clock ? This dude is calling for a foul the way they mug Tim Duncan ? He has Raja Bell one of the dirtiest players in his own right on his team and he wants to call out Bowen and Manu ? Did Many punch someone in the face or clothesline the Black Mamba that I didn’t know about ? Yeah he flops - but not as bad as Devin Harris among others. One thing that Bowen does that is dirty is step under jump shooters - I do hate that.

May.11 at 3:52 pm

Chris says:
Does anybody remember the flying karate kick (straight from Mortal Kombat) to Wally Szerbiaasgaskliak’s domepiece a few years back? Also, who caught Ginobili’s holding Amare’s leg when he was on the floor so Amare couldn’t cut to the basket?

May.11 at 3:57 pm

Chris says:
Also, I think there is a general consensus that basketball has come so far from what it was in the 80s, and should probably go back to that (and refs should stop calling bull$#1t offensive fouls for flopping every 3 seconds Shaq’s on the floor at that)

May.11 at 4:31 pm

Boyd says:
H to the IZZO, what the f*ck’s soccer? I’ve heard of a game called football, where players get fouled, (or not, if Amare was a footballer he would have rolled over 50 times and held his whole leg as if he had been hit by a car) and the foul-er usually tells the ref to ‘f*ck off you c*nt’ if he gets carded. But fouls in football are pretty much always obvious, in Rugby, it’s a much finer line cos so much is allowed. If you’ve ever been in a scrum you will know that well placed stamping or ear biting goes on all the time - but you can’t see it. You will also notice Rugby players very rarely tell the ref to ‘f*ck off’; they always protest their innocence in a very polite manner, cos they don’t wanna get sin binned. As i said, fouls in football are obvious, in Rugby they are subtle - and they hurt, which is why I think Irish Pat is the man for the job.

May.11 at 4:32 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
Amare calling people out was a little bit suspect, and the San Antonio fans will let him know about it. Hopefully this problem can be solved. You just don’t want to see a guy taking cheap shots, including the sliding under the jump shooter move, which is bush league. I want Amare to jump as high as he can without a second thought about someone taking a cheap shot at him when he’s unprotected. We’ll see. I’m sure Bruce won’t change at all. Kobe’s “follow through” suspension whether justified or not, did set a precedent.

May.11 at 5:17 pm

nfg3 says:
I just finished reviewing the videos on Bowen. The one on Anthony Parker was pretty coincidental. Bowen was just atanding there and Parker landed on his foot. As for the Allen, Carter, Crawford and Francis jumpshots (what I found of Kobe was him destorying Bowen and the Spurs) what I say was Bowen jumping up to block the shot and several times turning almost a 180 to look at the shot and landing in a broad stance, usually with his left placed outward. Now we have a couple of eays to look at this - 1) Bowen is a crafty defensive player who, getting on in years, is using dirty tactics to defend players. He must be really good at it since he usually has his back to the player when he lands or 2) his momentum is carrying him into where the shooter usually lands. If the former then label him dirty but if the latter then it is coincidental. Regardless of what anyone thinks I believe the league needs to address this issue. Even if Bowen’s acts are coincidental but does lead to injury of a player then maybe a new rule or rules need to be considered. Such as considering the space where a shooter usually lands to be off limits to defensive players. Either being punished with a regular foul, a T or a flagrant 1.
If you believe that Bowen is dirty then how did you come to that conclusion? Psychic? Because players have been injured due to Bowen? Other player’s opinions? If you believe the injury scenario it can be argued that it was accidental and not intentional. I think it can be argued either way depending upon your personal opion of Bowen. Other player’s opinions - Allen is one of the biggest crybabies in the league who is regularly shutdown by Bowen. Methinks he does protest to much. I don’t have much thought on either Francis or Crawford.
I observed that Ray Allen was committing an offensive foul (he was called for this) by jumping into Bowen with his elbow extending into Bowen’s face. I probably would have kicked Allen, too.
As for the Amare situation it does look like he was intendig to kick/step on Amare. That is disturbing. There is no place in sports for that type of behavior. People get injured often enough by simply playing the game. Maybe as stated before the league needs to review these incidents after the game and then issue whatever fines or suspensions warranted.
Game 3 in San Antonio is going to be interesting. We’ll see if there is payback on the Suns part as well as how the refs actually officiate the game. How tight are they going to call it? If Bowen does anything that looks funny will he be Ted? Stay tuned because this soap opera ain’t over yet.

May.11 at 5:24 pm

illydiva says:
@Chris, I vividly remember Manu grabbing Amare’s legs a la Jeff Van Gundy lo those many years ago. Manu & Bowen (who I actually respect for most of what they do) are indeed on some other ish with their defense. And when you add that Manu is also in the running for MVF (Most Valuable Flopper), it’s disgusting. And Bowens’ shenanigans are what keep him from winning DPOY.

I have no respect for someone who does something like that. It is simply messed up to do in a pick up game, let alone the NBA playoffs. Dantoni should put in Pat Burke to punch Bowen in the face and slit his achilles.

May.11 at 7:22 pm

If Bowen can do this and get away with it, then Raja should do the same thing to Duncan and we’ll see what happens.

K22C….first, a player can be a good defender and be dirty as well. Bowen is dirty and this has been general knowledge for some time. Not sure where you have been. Spurs haters….join with me, slap Bruce Bowen! Slap Bruce Bowen!…………………………..by the way, Bowen responded with that “do I look innocent enough?” face and Ginobli immediately talked about how beat up he gets. I wonder if he was thinking of all of his flops?

May.11 at 11:25 pm

the de la menthe says:
illydiva: despite those shenanigans, he’s is still a consistent all defense first teamer. Despite the number of people being gutsy (or emasculating themselves, depending on your point of view) and calling him out, how many people has he actually injured? Is he in Juwan Howard/Karl Malone Territory yet? I just wanna say Bowen plays dirty with the most finesse of anyone ive ever seen.

The thing is, normally I wouldn’t defend Bowen in anyway. But was that really on purpose? The video does kinda suggest that, but how impossible is it to actually kick someone heel mid jump? I think it might be just coincidence.

May.12 at 6:30 pm

Temple Stark says:
The comments here wishing serious violence on Bowen are disgusting. A few elbows maybe, but calling for other players to be hitmen for the other players running their mouth is nasty in all the stereotypical ways of a mindless sports fan.

May.13 at 12:05 am

illydiva says:
@the de la menthe, who was it Bowen kicked in the back while he was down (Ray Allen?) In any event, why does someone need to get injured before the league stops turning the blind eye? Basketball is already a physical sport and even though most players still suit up, the majority end up soaking in a tub of ice after most games. I doubt any of them do it because it feels good. Bruce’s tactics are uncalledfor and it shouldn’t take a serious injury to call it what it is.

May.13 at 2:53 am
