79-76 does it get any better?

No seriously, does it? Cause this is bad.

By Sam Rubenstein

Well, okay then… as far as the game recap goes, have fun with this one Jake. I’ll be at the bottom of the pool with A.J. Soprano if you need me. Lots of walking the ball up the floor. These guys can milk a shot clock with the best of them.

There was some drama as always. Perhaps yet another controversy. Did Varaejo get fouled by Sheed or did he flop? Did LeBron make the right choice and was he fouled? What was up with that Pavlovic play? Did Larry Hughes get such a good deal on plane tickets for his summer vacation that he needs this to be a sweep? Do the Pistons have even the slightest concern in the back of their minds that they could lose this series? Do they even care about the first half of games? I’m sure it will all be discussed by Jacob.

As far as the ending of game one went, don’t waste any more of your time. Should LeBron have passed? Dunked? Laid it in? Who cares, he was lucky to even be playing.

Stu Jackson, thy name is discretion. A $5,000 fine for LeBron James. In the time it takes to say “LeBron you have been fined $5,000” he has already made another $10,000.

You know what… the final score of game 2 was 79-76. This isn’t supposed to still be happening. The most amazing development of these playoffs so far in my opinion, has been the lack of calls received by Mr. LeBron James against the Pistons. It’s even more shocking than the Golden State upset. Isn’t the NBA supposed to be doing every little thing possible to get its biggest marquee name on the big stage? Sending a superstar to the free throw line not only helps his team win the game, but it pads his stats, and most importantly gives him lots of TV face time so the world can get to know him as a celebrity. The NBA is really going out of its way to prove that the megastar is not God. It’s weird. Up is down, hot is cold.

T.G.I.Fri-day!!!! This long weekend is much needed. The weather is approaching the 90s and that can make you a little bit crazy. Over the weekend, one game in each series will be played. That is all. Double sweep? Change of venue, change of luck?

Russ Bengtson says:
Maybe the League is PROTECTING LeBron (and his Miracle-Gro fingernails—when does he score the inevitable Lee Press-On endorsement?) by not calling fouls against him ’cause they know he’s not too good from the line.

May.25 at 7:30 am

RedRum says:
your comment about LBJ not gettingn calls is my problem with officiating in the NBA… last year wade was critisised for getting too many calls. this year there are complaints that Lebron does not get too many calls… I thought the refs job was to be impartial and call what they see. Your suggestion that he should be getting more calls just out of respect (and I do not think that should happen with any other superstar) is essentialy rigging the game.

May.25 at 7:40 am

Sesa says:
I really think LeBron should really pushed the envelope of playing physical, maybe creating and offensive foul or two. Letting the Pistons and the Ref knew that He’s in the ball-game. What’s up with Larry Hughes anyway? He looks lazy, tired, maybe intimidated.

May.25 at 7:43 am

Sesa says:
I mean not swinging the elbow after the follow through but just driving hard to the rim, creating contact with the Pistons so that they get annoyed.

May.25 at 7:50 am

Russ Bengtson says:
This has nothing to do with anything, except it’s 100x better than Pistons/Cavs. “Your facial expressions when you dunk are VERY limited”: http://gekkovideo.com/nike2.html

May.25 at 7:53 am

Garrett says:
Yeah, I liked coach Mike Brown’s quote before the game when he said that if all of his players foul out because of 6 offensive fouls, then oh well. It’s better to be aggressive than passive. He drove his shoulder right into Rip Hamilton on a fast break play when it looked like Rip was set and who got the foul? Rip. LeBron needs to keep doing that. Although that being said, I’m a huge Pistons fan and am hoping for the sweep. Eat it, LeBron! :D

May.25 at 7:56 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Losing multiple playoff series to the Pistons is all part of becoming The Global Icon. Haven’t any of you watched “Come Fly With Me”? Sheesh.

May.25 at 7:58 am

Sesa says:
@Garrett.
I’m not a big fan of both teams but it’s quite clear that the Pistons are superior. Wouldn’t be interesting to see the game if the Cavs put up a fight? From the perspective of a casual fans both Western and Eastern Conference Finals are boring.

May.25 at 8:04 am

Sesa says:
I dunno about being a global icon. But IMO the current NBA’s global icon is Yao Ming and Kobe Bryant. That LeBron is going down on Diddy’s path even though he hangs out with Jay-Z.

May.25 at 8:10 am

Russ Bengtson says:
HE’S 22 YEARS OLD. I realize this fact may have been mentioned once or 674,962 times on this site in the past few days, but jeez.

May.25 at 8:15 am

Sesa says:
Sorry Russ, I just got carried over. I think that’s why he’s still needs some tutelage from veteran players. Mike Brown needed to add a few to this roster.

May.25 at 8:16 am

Ryan Jones says:
LeBron is the new KG. Both teams played hard. Peace.

May.25 at 8:21 am

Garrett says:
Oh, and I made this comment on another blog and thought I was so clever that I should re-post it here: Anderson Varejao reminds me of the fat, unco-ordinated guy at the Y. You don’t want him on your team because he doesn’t actually have any skills, but you DEFINITELY don’t want to play against him because he’s so clumsy that you’ll end up getting hurt because of him.

May.25 at 8:21 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Well, by the time Larry Bird was LeBron’s age…um, he wasn’t in the NBA yet.

May.25 at 8:25 am

Sesa says:
@Russ Bengston.
I know it’s not fair for LeBron because he is young and all but Danny Ferry had assembled this team to win NOW.
So maybe it’s not just the public and media. The Cavs organization expects him to win right now.

May.25 at 8:35 am

Ryan Jones says:
Also — and I swear to goodness this will be my last post of the day — I’d like to harken back to an exchange from a few days ago…
mutoni says:
…call me crazy, but when you’re not double-teamed and are within 2 feet of the rim, you don’t kick it out to a wide open teammate. and do you really think he wouldn’t have gotten the call against the pistons on that play? the nba would like nothing more than for this series to go as long as possible, and a cavs win in game 1 would have made david stern orgasm in his seat…
Ryan Jones says:
mutoni, you’re crazy. I think he knew Tayshaun had a decent chance of blocking his shot, and no, given the precedent set throughout the game, I don’t think he had the confidence he would’ve gotten the call there. I sure as hell didn’t.
Good night and God bless.

May.25 at 8:56 am

white hot eboy says:
It should be noted that while the Pistons have beaten the Cavs both games by small margins and it doesn’t seem like Lebron can figure out what late-game tatic’s to employee, does anyone really think that the Pistons will win more than 2 games against the Spurs. The Spurs are easily handling a much better Jazz team than the Cavs are and NO ONE on the Pistons will be able to match up with TD.

May.25 at 8:56 am

whooo! says:
so lebron’s series is putting up scores in the 70s, and the SPURS are putting up scores in the 100s of their respective series… and russ, d-wade and tim duncan won finals mvp’s at 22 didn’t they? they had much better supporting casts, that’s a fact, but you can do better than the age factor…

May.25 at 8:59 am

Russ Bengtson says:
I’d venture to say that the Pistons are better player-wise from 2-15 right down the line. Not to mention at head coach (was it too much to ask for the Cavs to maybe save a single time out for the end of ONE of these games?). But hey, forget all the overanalysis, I can sum the whole thing up in five words: Detroit is the better team. (And LeBron will have his turn. Why the hell is everyone so damn impatient? Last I checked, Wade and TD had Shaq and David Robinson respectively, both former MVPs. LeBron has…Zydrunas Ilgauskas?)

May.25 at 9:00 am

whooo! says:
age excuse rather…

May.25 at 9:02 am

Russ Bengtson says:
And I wasn’t using his age as an excuse, it’s just a basic fact. HE’S YOUNG. And his team has progressed further into the playoffs every year. Isn’t that the way it’s supposed to work?

I am extremely tired, I went to the midnight showing of Pirates 3 last night and now am sitting in school after getting home at 3 a.m. It was good, I didn’t really like the multiple Jack Sparrow’s that were in random parts of the movie. Good sad ending though. Makes for a good Pirates 4.

May.25 at 9:22 am

Vitor says:
Russ, If the Pistons have an advantage at head coach then you’re implying thar Mike Brown is really lousy, cause last I checked Flip Saunders wasn’t shining any of his rings or pouring champagne on KG
@ Nadav Mor: Did Sam ditch his Spoiler Alert stuff? The Sopranos season hasn’t even begun here in Brazil and now i already now that Chris and AJ will die. Nice.

May.25 at 9:22 am

Ken H says:
Are we complaining about superstars NOT getting calls? Ummm, wasn’t this league a lot better when they weren’t protecting their posterboys? Lebrons not getting calls because he’s not playing to take over and change games (though he DID get fouled last night in the final seconds). I liked the NBA before walking down the street resulted in a foul on Dwyane Wade.

May.25 at 9:23 am

Sesa says:
@Ryan Jones.
I think Mutoni considers LeBron as the next Kobe.

May.25 at 9:23 am

Ryan Jones says:
AJ didn’t die, Vitor. He killed his mom. No worries.

May.25 at 9:25 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Vitor: Mike Brown ended two very close games with exactly ZERO timeouts left for final possessions. Two playoff games. On the road. In a row. I’m not implying he’s really lousy—I’m screaming it from the proverbial rooftops.

May.25 at 9:26 am

Billy Blanks says:
@Ryan I was just thinking about that same exchange ryan. i wonder what mutoni is thinking now. And the NBA is the ultra-contradictory monster. First, they suspend Stoudemire and Diaw and not Duncan because there seemed to be no altercation. Now, the same thing kobe was suspended TWICE for, all Lebron gets is a measly $5,000 fine. The NBA really wants the least exciting players seen the most

Vitor, Aj’s not dead (for real) just his sense of ever becoming a man is dead.

May.25 at 9:36 am

whooo! says:
russ, you’re right, it is young, that’s just the truth. i guess it’s just that bringing up comparisons w/ larry legend, i figured i’d bring up a counter-example. i don’t think age is what’s keeping him down, nor experience, but a matter of detroit just being the superior team.

May.25 at 9:39 am

Ryan Jones says:
That was one of my mid-level Sopranos exception, Billy. As is this.
And to answer your question, mutoni is thinking the same thing he’s always thinking: “Ryan is always right. Ryan is awesome.”

May.25 at 9:53 am

white hot eboy says:
Guys, think about it, if Detroit is so superior to the Cavs, how is it that both games have come down to the last few seconds and, Lebron, with ball in hand in both instances, has not come through with a successful game-winning play. His flaw is he has no killer-instinct at this point of his career, not his age, not Detroit being superior, etc. A week ago it was the same thing with the Bulls. They need to grow-up (literally and figuratively), growing pains, not enough experience. Last I checked, there were about 6 or 7 teams in this years playoffs that have those same issues (Jazz, Cavs, Raptors, Wizards, GSW, Bulls & the Lakers)and not one of those teams have ONE guy the entire country is making excuses for. Lebron is a great player and a huge talent but until he can win big games he is just another wannabe. Like Michael was early on too. And these Detroit teams are about half as intimidating as the original Bad Boys. Sorry Bron Bron. Use that big-ass frame of yours and start knocking cats on their ass. (And not with Kobeesque mid-flight arm flaps either)

May.25 at 9:54 am

K22C, saw Pirates last night too. Was my least favorite of the three. The monkey and Keith Richards were the best parts of the movie to me.

i caught it. i’m in asia for the summer, and they actually released pirates on wednesday. maybe too many twists in the plot that get kinda confusing, but it was a really fun movie.

May.25 at 9:58 am

Russ Bengtson says:
So wait—basing a movie trilogy on an amusement park ride isn’t a good idea?

May.25 at 9:58 am

Billy Blanks says:
Good point eboy. When you’re up late in the fourth quarter on the road and have a chance to win it in both instances, that’s just a matter of a lack of experience, not skill. However, I do think these Pistons are vastly superior to the Cavs, they are just playing way down below their potential. I mean Tayshaun Prince won’t go 1-19 the rest of the series.

May.25 at 10:02 am

K22C says:
yea, it had a lot of twists….. Jack is ballin’ though, when the crabs took his ship to sea. I think it was better than the first one but not as good at the second… I liked all of the idea of the 9 peices of 8 and the pirate warlards, it would have been better ifthey would have kind of cut out the multiple jack sparrows, like when he is in davies locker.

May.25 at 10:06 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Can you guys maybe not ruin the entire movie for the people who haven’t seen it yet? (Which I’m guessing is almost everyone.) I’m already not bothering to watch The Sopranos. E-mail, please. Or at least a “Pirates” specific board.

May.25 at 10:08 am

white hot eboy says:
Billy Blanks, I’m in agreement about Detroit playing below par, but isn’t their their MO. But you can probably agree that if Lebron was in attack mode (like last years 2nd round series)and got 30 to 40 instead of 10 & 19, the Cavs might actually be up 2-0. Look, I hate the Pistons (except for C-Webb) but I respect the fact they have a consitently good team in today’s NBA. But similar to Kobe’s situation in LA, Lebron is THE catylyst on his team. The Cavs are not a great team like the Spurs, Pistons, Suns so that should be all the more motivation for Lebron to do ALL HE CAN to win these games now. It won’t get any easier as each year passes. Just ask Kobe how that playoff thing is working for him now.

May.25 at 10:08 am

K22C says:
well i had to wait to see the lost finale on vcr but it got ruined for me, but i guess if you make a board i can talk about it there.

Brian says:
Eboy, aside from not being able stop penetration, guard the paint, contest 3’s or prevent backdoor passes, Utah is no doubt better than the Cavs. I can’t figure out why the West is so highly regarded.

May.25 at 10:48 am

white hot eboy says:
Brian, is that sarcasm or criticism towards the Jazz? Or the West as a whole?

May.25 at 10:52 am

Brian says:
It is all 3 actually.

May.25 at 10:53 am

Allenp says:
Yo, the score doesn’t really tell the true story of this game. This was a very, very entertaining game to me. There were clutch shots, nice dunks, it had a pretty good flow overall. I’m tired of people complaing that half court games are boring. Learn how to do more than watch the ball.

May.25 at 10:56 am

Allenp says:
to the guy saying the Pistons have now shot against the Spurs, the Pistons gave the Spurs fits the last time they played in the Finals. Sheed does a great job against Duncan, and Billups abuses Parker on offense. the biggest problem was finding shots for Rip against Bowen, and I don’t think that will be as big of a problem this year.

May.25 at 10:59 am

Brian says:
Dirk could have hit the same shot as Sheed’s last one if you let him catch it and gave him 15 more seconds.

May.25 at 11:04 am

white hot eboy says:
AllenP, the Pistons gave fits to the Spurs because their team (and defense) was anchored by Big Ben and that’s what made their team champions the year before. The Pistons were no factor in last years playoffs and have benefited this year from a really, really, really watered down Eastern Conference. (think injuries to Heat & Wizards and really favorable matchups against the Magic and Bulls) If Webber doesn’t come through big (like this series and last where he has sucked balls) the Pistons are through. Remember how easy the Spurs shut down the Suns? (who have the most fluid offense in the game)The Spurs can play at a faster pace and the slow down game so they really will not have an issue with Detroit’s grind it out style this year. Pop is pretty good making adjustments from game to game so we’ll see.

May.25 at 11:15 am

Nothin_personal says:
I don’t think you people can handle the refs playing straight. You want your main guys go 1 on 5 when the defence is adjusted on them without having to worry about the other four dudes on the court, “the man” is not allowed to pass. If the refs do not “help”, there is no cheap emotion for the media to sell. That’s why when team USA plays international ball, specific pampered “Superstars” can’t deliver (well, that, and the illegal defence factor)!

May.25 at 11:23 am

white hot eboy says:
Nothin-personal, the original Dream Team had no problems with international competition because everyone of those guys were KILLERS (except Christian Laettner). And if they could put that same team on the floor today, they would wipe the floor with the international POWERS of today. (Illegal defense or not)

May.25 at 11:27 am

white hot eboy says:
And nothin_perosonal, with your spelling of “defence”, what county are you writing from? (or was that an all-American typeo)This could be the start of a interesting talkback, USA ballers against the world. Uh-oh.

and mike brown should be fired, why do you have a top five center sitting the bench for most of and almost the entirety of the second half??? and drew gooden? no team consisting of varejao d.jones and marshall on the court at the same time is deserving of representing the east in the finals, i’m ashamed.

May.25 at 11:42 am

Allenp says:
White eboy, the Pistons lost to the Heat in six last year after a tough series with the Cavs. Ben was unhappy and played like it and that team was adjusting to Flip Saunders. I think the loss of Ben hurt, but Sheed did the best job defending Duncan as he has done throughout his career including his time in Portland. Rip had expanded his game to include off the dribble moves, and Prince is a much bigger factor in the offense, typically. The addition of Webber hurts them slightly defensively, but they do have four legitimate bigs to throw at Duncan, and I think Webber’s offense will help the team’s flow. If the Pistons play with the appropriate fire they are very, very good.

May.25 at 11:43 am

Sam Rubenstein says:
Mike Brown made some curious moves. Picking up the technical at the end took their odds of winning down from slim to near impossible.
Nobody noticed that I called Jake by his given name, Jacob. He is our secret boss. His game notes/recap has more details on the game. And Lang has a big piece going up today that has nothing to do with any of this.

May.25 at 12:05 pm

Steve O says:
Big Z a top 5 center? Maybe in the East but not overall, at least not this year. I understand why Brown was so furious, Sheed might have just gotten away with a push off and then his #1 guy gets hammered in the lane and doesn’t get the call, can’t blame Brown for flipping his lid.

May.25 at 12:07 pm

white hot eboy says:
Allenp, the Pistons are very good but that blase’ attitude will catch up to them against an excellent team (the Spurs)if they don’t raise thei games. My boys, the Heat, had that same bullsh*t attitude and we all know where they are right now.

Russ, I see your point about age but at the same time he’s had years to adjust to the L and he has the body of a fit 33 year old.
He tried to initiate that contact too much and to call it (either way) would’ve been retarded in my eyes.

Lebron needs a low post game.

May.25 at 12:18 pm

Reggie, that would require off-season work and we all know that BronBron is all about making endorsement dollars in the offseason.

May.25 at 12:19 pm

Vitor says:
Yeah Russ i know Mike Brown isn’t very good, but, unless your coach is Terry Stotts, it’s pretty hard to be in a huge coaching disadvantage when you’re playing against Flip. That just goes to show that the NBA really needs new good Head coaches (billy donovan?). I just can’t trust anyone outside Riley, Phil Jackson, Popovich, Sloan, d’Antoni and Avery Johnson.
Oh, and I was kind os disappointed to hear that AJ didn’t die. I’ve always hated that little piece of shit!

It’s weird watching these games. When I’m not looking at the score, I think, “damn, the Pistons are clearly out-playing the Cavs” Then I look at the score and they’re only up by 1 or they’re down by 1. I don’t think there was enough contact to call a foul on that play. Lebron should have taken his time on the shot instead of spinning and shooting in one motion, he’s big enough to shoot right over Hamilton. And Hughes had enough time to try and get in the lane instead of that bullsh*t fadeaway. Mike Brown’s head is HUGE! I see Larry Brown in LeBron’s future.

May.25 at 1:13 pm

jay says:
what is my take?? well to be honest.. i like more uptempo play so count me the camp of this is a boring series…that being said..you can say what you want..it is the playoffs and bron is on the road..unless he is mj..which he is not yet..he is not getting that call. 2nd is move was not so aggressive to even warrant the ref to even blow the whistle in the first place. bron had some nice throw-downs but i kind of question how he can not out-muscle rip..he has what 45 lbs on him?? not hatin..just stating the facts. d-town is a good team but cavs should have stolen at least one game in my opinion!

May.25 at 1:35 pm

Dennard says:
Mike Brown should get more blame than he is getting. What the hell was his strategy in the 2nd half? Well, we have a 12 point lead at the half by pushing the ball and getting easy baskets, now let’s get Z involved to start the 2nd half. What the hell logic is that? I know dude is a young coach, but man he made some questionable decisions. It looks like he is overcoaching this team, I know they aren’t the most talented team in the league, but he needs to ease up. A team generally takes their coach’s personality and they looked really tight in the 2nd half, and that is how he coached the 2nd half.

May.25 at 1:53 pm

Dennard says:
And Lebron did get fouled at the end. If that had been Dwyane Wade the refs would have called it.

I really couldn’t care less. Watching this series makes me regret rooting against the Suns. Horrible, just horrible. And no, Lebron wasn’t fouled.

The officiaing has been better than average.Mike Brown needs coaching lessons.LeBron needto have that f*** y’all attitude and stop giving his scrub ass teammates so much respect. When you get a combined 11 pts from your main Cavellettes(D-Good,Big-Zzzzzz,and Larry Phew)it’s officially time to go postal!!! This making the right pass and play to the WRONG people is just not working.Yo Bron, win or lose you get the credit,so go for yours.Give Kobe a call in Aruba and I’ll bet you he tells you the same thing.I like the way the Cavs didn’t publicly blame the refs(yeah fellas good business move invest that money don’t give it away). How many of us could’ve made that shot Larry P-YEW missed? Granted it was a “pressure” shot, but they’re “pros”.What made it worse was ‘Raggedy Andy’s’ tap came closer to going in than Phughes’ point blank shot.”He has worse aim than a NYC cop” D-Town in 5. Spurs next.

Sam - Had a thought digging around the site while bored at work. It would be pretty cool to have an “About Us” page or pages with photos, blurbs, and bio type stuff on each of the writers/ contributors. Perhaps a “dog days of summer” type job when the Finals end…

@White hot eboy Well, people were too much in awe in Barcelona to even play any D. I will give you that Duncan was getting some weird fouks called on him in Athens 2004, but almost every other time, it was straight international officiating you were getting. Plus, with the possible exception of Spain, there are no international powers. They are the only team that’s a perennial contender for a medal since forever, AND they seem to have a guaranteed bright future (see Rubio, Rickey).
P.S.I am writing from Greece, but I come from Cyprus (kind of like USA-Virgin Islands ;) ), so give me a break. I haven’t practiced my spelling since 2000, so a spelling mistake here or there isn’t that a big deal.
