Player of the D.A.Y.
Don’t listen to Dark Side of the Moon while reading this.
Yesterday I read this post on freedarko, which was very re-assuring. The intensity and excitement of the NBA season has fallen off a cliff, which makes me feel better because I know I’m not the only one that feels this way. Then it goes on to hype up the Eastern Conference playoffs, saying that the East is the new West because of the inevitability of Dallas-Phoenix and promotes some interesting future events ahead of us. I happen not to agree with all of that, but the point is that there is a general malaise right now. I like the phrase “ghost town.”
The most meaningful games of the night were Jersey at Washington and the L.A. Clippers at New Orleans. I could give the award to David West, but Chris Paul was nearly as crucial to the win.
While the Nets were playing the severely depleted Washington Wizards, I did kind of gloss over how big of a win this game was for Jersey, and I played into the sympathy people are feeling for the D.C. area right now. The Washington Nationals are expected to lose 120 games this year. The Redskins are almost becoming the Knicks of the NFL with their annoying owner, payroll, and pricey style over substance roster. The Nets are back to living up to expectations, and could be headed for a Vince vs. the fans that hate him with a passion series. Richard Jefferson, the most optimistic player in the league, was not kidding about the Nets fighting through the bad times and keeping their heads up. He scored 35 of 13 of 19 shooting in a huge win over the team the Nets are trying to catch in the playoff hunt. Or, as the New York Post used for a headline: “Nets: We’re Off to Seize the Wizards.” A corny, and yet hysterically funny headline.
Richard Jefferson is therefore Player of the D.A.Y.

Whatevs. TJ. FOrd is gonna kill Jason. He’s faster adn has way more options now. He can drive and dish to Bosh or to any one of the Shooters on the team. It’s their time to shine.

Chief: TJ Ford is going to do what he does every game. Dribble wildly into traffic, bounce the ball off his knees a few times and turn it over. Unless they run on every possession. TJ Ford might be the worst half court PG in the NBA. Bench his ass and go with Calderon until he drops dead from exhaustion. Then put Slokar at the point. Or Sow. Or a Babcock. Anyone but Ford.

VC against the Raptors would provide some juice to the first round with Gilbert missing.

well maybe TJ ford will create problems for Kidd on the offensive end (even though Kidd has been an underated defensive guard his whole career), but he sure as hell ain’t gonna be able to do anything with Ason at the other end of the court. and if raptors put a bigger guard on Jkidd, then who’s guarding the most hated man in Toronto or chicken voice?
on the other hand, nets will be completely overmatched by Toronto’s frontline, so it’s gonna be a great series. on paper that is. you never know about those crazy Titanic teams.

The Raptors made me a lot of money this year because everyone under estimated the Raptors. I’m not a particularly big Raptors fan (heck I live in Vegas) but there is no way that they’d lose to the Nets!

wow lotta hate for one of the greatest points of all time. Fact is Kidd would smoke lil’ T.J. and I’m not talking about his son. Being the only reasonable jersey fan, I’d like to see vince get the treatment he earns from the rap fans though. Still I think toronto at this point is the stronger team.

Vince going back to Toronto for a playoff series might be enough to keep him interested and motivated every night, which could make that matchup a classic.

I wouldn’t call making the first team all-defensive four times “underrated”, more like the opposite. Well, it might have been deserved except for that 2005-06 season. But you can definitely find worse defensive PGs in the league, namely Steve whatshisname… oh yeah, Nash!

i mentioned Kidd being underrated on defense simply because he’s known for his offense. i mean when you ask someone what stands out about Kidd, they’d probably say passing and/or getting trip-dubs. people will comment about his inconsistent jumpers before they say anything about his defense. simply a perception/relative thing.

Tuomas says:
Btw albie, that means it’s fair to also say that Nash is actually an overrated (consider THAT) defensive player because people don’t talk enough about his defensive shortcomings while riding on his bandwagon. I’m not saying Nash isn’t a great player, but that is an obvious weakness in his game that needs to be considered. Maybe also the fact that he (as a supposedly perfect point guard) has battled Dwight Howard all season long for ownership of the turnover king -title, but I’m not sweating the Phoenix style of play too much.
