Lakers Vs. Suns: First Round Preview

No Tim Thomas!

by Marcel Mutoni

Lakers vs. Suns

D’Antoni vs. Jackson

Raja vs. Kobe

Nash vs. Kobe

Barkley vs. Kobe

That was the script last year. There hasn’t been a script revision this time around. Last season, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Phoenix Suns played in one of the most memorable first round Playoff series in NBA history. Coming off a controversial second consecutive MVP award, Steve Nash went up against someone who many felt should have been the one with the regular season hardware (Kobe Bryant), and all hell broke loose. Phil Jackson introduced the rest of the Bryantaires to the world, and shockingly enough, it worked. Using stifling team defense, and a balanced offensive attack, the Lakers shocked the basketball world by taking a 3-1 series lead against the heavily favored Suns.

Game 4 was a classic. It had everything one could hope for in a sporting event, and then some: Intrigue, drama, a hero, a goat, and…love (more on this in a minute). Coming into the nationally televised contest, the Lakers held a surprising 2-1 series lead but no one seriously thought they could pull off the upset. Late in the overtime period, Phoenix had a one point lead and it looked like they were well on their way to tying the series. But then, Nash got tied up by Walton and Odom, forcing a jump ball.

I was watching the game in my bedroom with a lady friend who had never sat through an entire basketball game before, but she was just as captivated as I was. Walton won the tip, and Bryant gathered the rock. He drove down the middle of the court, went slightly right with two dribbles after he crossed the three point line, and let a jumper fly over Raja Bell and Boris Diaw. Pandemonium. Staples went absolutely berserk, and I ran circles around my apartment screaming like a lunatic. When I returned to the room, in my elation, I planted a loooong kiss on my lady friend’s lips (much to her surprise). Today, she is my girlfriend.

While game 4 represented nothing but joy and vindication for us Laker fans, game 6 brought us crashing back down to earth. You remember Kobe’s 50, Nash’s brilliance, and of course Tim F*cking Thomas’ three that forced overtime. I went to a bar here in Ottawa to catch the game, and afterwards in a drunken blogging haze, I declared it the worst loss that I had ever experienced as a sports fan. I didn’t even bother watching game 7. Tim Thomas basically ended the series with that shot. Hope you’re enjoying the offseason, Tim. Jerk!

So here we are again. Lakers vs. Suns. First round. Phoenix just came off one of the best seasons in team history, everyone’s healthy, and they’re serious title contenders. The Lakers regressed from last season, they’ve been banged up all year, the offense in once again “Give the ball to Kobe and get the hell out of the way”, and there’s no reason to believe the series will be as entertaining as last year. HOWEVER, there’s a reason we watch and they play the games: You never know.

Logic, reason, intelligence, my two eyes, and 99.9% of the world say the Suns in 5 games or less.

My heart says Lakers in 7.

Shelbie says:
Suns should of had that game who cares there taking the championship home anyways………..(phoenix fan)

Apr.20 at 3:51 pm

Shelbie says:
i can’t stand Lakers, but phoenix is another story they worked there butts off all season long and they came a long way and with out NASH,AMARE,and MARION there wouldnt be a team they probly couldn’t of got this far and become what they are today…(phoenix fan)

Apr.20 at 3:52 pm

Shelbie says:
PHOENIX YOU ROCK…(phoenix fan)

Apr.20 at 3:57 pm

Tom says:
Feel the same way, my heart is rooting for the lakers but anyone who’s watched LA play this year can see they’ve taken a few steps backwards, and now phoenix is expecting a battle, and they have Amare. But like any true laker fan I will ignore all this and root for LA, hoping that smush stops being scurred to shoot, kwame gets a new set of hands and can stay out of foul trouble, and Bynum shows amare what it really means to be a beast.

Apr.20 at 4:27 pm

SwingMan says:
You guys are something else. Laker homers, the whole lot of you. Not a lot that’s more disgusting a site as a circle of delusional Laker nut huggers doing more ball slapping than a nervous hooker….. My Suns get Amare back (not to mention Kurt Thomas) and you counter with —– Kwame Brown? Wow, some savior there. LMAO!!!!! Mutoni, prepare for tee time in a couple weeks - if that. Suns in 5 - MAX.

Apr.20 at 4:33 pm

Dennard C says:
SwingMan, I gotta agree with on the prediction -Suns in 5.

Apr.20 at 4:33 pm

Max Airington says:
I bet you said something like that last year too.

Apr.20 at 4:35 pm

Emry DowningHall says:
Lake show in seven? Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit (Clay Davis) Bold. I like it. That series was one for the ages though… heres to a sequel.

Apr.20 at 4:38 pm

Gerry Jacobs (AZ Boy) says:
This is our year. My boys are healthy and the Lakers are going to have a problem. Good Luck.

Apr.20 at 4:43 pm

SwingMan says:
Max, last year was unpredictable as hell. How can it not be with a Suns team so depleted in the froncourt that it had to start Boris Diaw at center? Oh yeah, one other factor the Lakers counted on last year won’t be anywhere near a court this year: Joey Crawford, master of game 4’s farce - this time, when Nash gets hacked repeatedly, there’ll actually be a foul called instead of a frigging jump ball….. BOY, you effers got lucky last year - ain’t happening this year - Sorry.

Apr.20 at 4:59 pm

Hersey says:
Go Suns! It’s funny to hear the other side of that Tim Thomas shot. I remember going to work the next day (my old job is a big Suns sponsor) and everyone had on Suns jerseys (KJ throwback personally) and was talking about the game. The Rental was a savior last year but he got what he deserved with the Clips.

Apr.20 at 4:59 pm

AB_40 says:
agree suns in 5

Apr.20 at 5:03 pm

Max Airington says:
This year is unpredictable as hell. I respect Phoenix, seriously. but how scared am I supposed to be of a team that lives and dies by the three and refuses to play D?

Apr.20 at 5:09 pm

jbn74sb says:
Mutoni - I’ve got f-cking goosebumps reading this sh-t! That game 4 was unbelievable - my throat is still sore from screaming at the end of regulation and then again at the end of overtime. Unbelievablly, I did not get an eviction notice after the game. And, like you said, hope you’re enjoying the offseason, Tim Thomas! You piece of sh-t!

Apr.20 at 5:15 pm

Darksaber says:
Ummm, all offense aside, all negative D tendencies aside, Phoenix can roll out the following as it’s starters: Nashty (yes, 2 time MVP and eyes in the back of his head), Matrix (nuff said), Raja the enforcer (aim for Mambiatch’s throat Raj!), zat frenchie Diaw and the NBA’s equivalent to the hydrogen bomb: STAT. Kobe can AVERAGE 70 for all i care, the lakers are not beating Phoenix. too balanced, too much chemistry, too unpredictable, too fast, much too high FG-percentage, and lots of players with a chip on their respective shoulders. Dubya shall be accepted at Yale and gradute magma cum laude before L.A. beats these suns.

Apr.20 at 5:15 pm

SwingMan says:
Broken record, Max. Exactly how many Suns games have you seen this year again? No Amare last year = no low post offense. No Kurt Thomas last year = no low post defense - hell, if you think last year’s Suns team was built by design, you’re insane. Both are back and healthy this year and you still think the Lakers have a fighting chance? With Kwame Brown as your calling card to paint defense? LMAO!!! Shoot, pass me that stuff, will ya????? And all that’s not even taking Barbosa - whom the Lakers STILL have no answer for - and his continued emergence to the tune of 18/4/4 off the bench into account….. Why am I trying to use logic with a Laker fan again?

Apr.20 at 5:17 pm

R7 says:
4 games over phoenix is tuff men, but if the team game can win 2 for kobe, he will deliver the other 2.
prediction:
Game 7, kobe scores 101 points, rips his clothes of and walks into the horizon never to be heard from again…
on a serieus note, lakers in 7…kobe either 50 ppg or he goes for 25, 7 and 7

Apr.20 at 5:26 pm

SwingMan says:
Yeah R7. Just keep thinking happy thoughts and your wish will come true - LMAO!!!!! You guys haven’t beat a frigging +.500 team since before the All-Star break - now all the suuden you’re gonna take down the Suns, who’ve beaten you 3 straight and counting? Man PLEASE!!!!!

Apr.20 at 5:36 pm

O.R Paperstacks says:
Wow just watching that video gives me goose bumps…. still got the game the game on my dvr…. Lakers must win game 1 or 2

Apr.20 at 5:47 pm

Dennard C says:
Last year I was one of the few that thought the Lakers would beat the Suns, but this year the Lakers supporting cast just doesn’t have it and the Suns have STAT back, that makes it even more difficult. I don’t think we will see anybody get bodyslammed this year though.

Apr.20 at 5:59 pm

Andres David says:
Lakers in 6, with Dirk missing 2 buzzer beaters.

Apr.20 at 6:03 pm

Max Airington says:
So Im insane, high and havent seen any Suns basketball this year? Well Ive seen plenty of Suns basketball this year, but those other two are debatable. Your infallable logic aside, if your interior presence is that much stronnger than ours why did you get outrebounded in every game this year against LA? All of the games played this year were close and the Suns won with the three and their trips to the line. The Suns arent gonna stay hot for the entire series and theyre not gonna get any boards or play any D. Im still not scared. And chill with all that crazy talk. You can be confident in your team without sounding like an ass.

Apr.20 at 6:28 pm

J-Bird says:
Suns in 4

Apr.20 at 6:38 pm

Gerald says:
Lakers in 6!! IF the Suns win they will never get past the second round(Spurs) Suns will never win it all!

Apr.20 at 6:49 pm

namik says:
The only way we can win this series is if Kobe learns to adjust within games. kobe’s problem this season has been that he either clicks full on into team-first mode or just goes wild scoring. The Suns weakness is thier incosistency. Whenever the Suns go cold, Kobe has to kick it up a notch and drop like 20 in 5 mins. Then when the Suns come back with one of thier 15-0 runs, theyre still down. We can keep up with the Suns, we just need to overtake them. And as much as kwame is supposed to be our “secret” weapon, Kobe has to make some on court desicions instead of waiting for Phil to give him the greenlight or whatever. And more than Amare or Nash, I’m worried about Leo Barbosa. That fool is cold.

Apr.20 at 6:58 pm

namik says:
Also, Barbosa looks exactly like bird-ass Xerxes from 300. Can we get a seperated at birth already?

Apr.20 at 7:06 pm

S_diggy says:
You Suns clowns better beware- Kobe is on a mission this time. No more MR. Nice Guy. He’s going to show the world who the MVP is. This guy is coming for your throats! Lakes in 6. Tinker bell better behave or the Rott is gonna git him. PS- Amare should shut his trap. Can’t wait to see Mike D cry when it’s over.

Apr.20 at 7:17 pm

vinny2 says:
you heard me and the jim jones rap about kobe posted in one of those posts like two months ago rite? i dont suppoert teams i support players, and i cant call this one out.kobes is one of my favorite players same with S.N., but living in canada dictates me from ever watching or liking the lakers, and everyone in canada hates the lakers,or are more fond of the suns and dont really care, or totally hates the lakers and completely roots for suns, never the other way around,or hates both teams and the entire game of basketball and watches curling for a living and goes hiking. Anyway what im trying to say is its a hard call cuz i like both teams, ya. and i thought everyone who currently works for slam has to live in new york. NVM, nvm your just online only right mutoni? plus yu live in ottawa?

Apr.20 at 7:28 pm

SwingMan says:
Ok, Max. I’ll give you the boards issue. Lakers got us 3 out of 4 on the glass this year….. But, you’re the one who thinks the Lakers have a chance in the series and you think I sound like an ass????? Refuse to play defense? Just because we give up 103 points? Ever hear the word “pace”, Max? Think there’s a reason we score 110 per? What’s your beloved Lakers’ excuse for giving up 103 per as well, Max? And you’re accusing PHOENIX of playing no D? Again, broken record….. Brown ain’t gonna do jack to stop anyone, just like he fizzled down the stretch last year - when he was 100%. What’s he gonna do at his present 50%, fall on someone? LMAO!!!!! I admire your confidence in the face of utter futility, though.

Apr.20 at 7:52 pm

Michael says:
Man i really want the Lakers to win and my heart tells me they have enough pride in themselves that they won’t go out like bitches but in reality i can’t see it. They just play horrible defense, they’re offense is good. They are top 5 in scoring in the NBA, apparently people don’t realize that.

Apr.20 at 7:53 pm

Zippy says:
It takes 5 great players to win and The Lakers only have one great player and 2 possibles that are both banged up. Good luck on the tan this summer.

Apr.20 at 7:53 pm

Ken says:
I’m still disappointed the Lakers didn’t sign Pippen for the playoffs.

Apr.20 at 7:58 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Mutoni - I’m a huge Lakers and Kobe fan. But how come no one remembers that AFTER the Thomas shot, the Lakers had a chance to win in regulation, and Kobe AIRBALLED a shot over Shawn Marion? I was in shock! He could have driven in at least, or hit rim. That sucks. I’m getting mad thinking about it.

Apr.20 at 7:59 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Here’s the strategy this year: Make Nash score, Make Barbosa pass.

Apr.20 at 8:00 pm

namik says:
Because Reggie you cant expect Kobe to hit every shot he takes over people. You prolly remember that jab step pull back 3 he heit over 2 people, Marion included right? Thats the difference between Kobe and MJ for the past 3 years or even Kobe from the Shaq times and now. He is expected to hit like 3-5 clutch shots everytime because one is usually not enough. I mean that game should have been over after the performance Kobe out on. But his teammates mess up and he gets all the blame for it. Lack of talent is one thing but they can atleast play hard.

Apr.20 at 8:08 pm

Max Airington says:
Im just saying you sound like an ass with all the nut hugging talk and unnecessary insults. But whatever. Do you. I know I sound like a broken record, but that song is popular for a reason. Its the B side of your favorite track, “pace”. I never professed the Lakers to be some defensive juggernaut, but the fact of the matter is that both teams will be taking alot of open shots and Phoenix has never been known for their rebounding. I respect their overall FG%’s, but they go thru cold streaks that last minutes at a time and dont play any defense to compensate. You slow the pace on Phoenix and they lose alot of their rhythm. All of these things have been the knock on them for years and they have yet to prove anyone wrong. I dont hear you bragging about their record against Western Conference playoff teams, cause it’s around .500 for those very reasons. I watched too many teams beat them through attacking Nash and controlling the boards and as bad as Smush Parker is, he can still blow by Nash. That penetration breaks down your D, and may even get Marion or STAT in foul trouble. Its not such an unlikely scnario. Phoenix still isnt the favorite in the conference and they probably face the toughest road to the Finals. The first two games of this series are crucial. Phoenix wants to finish as early as possible to rest, so theyre going hard at LA. The Lakers know this, so a win would bolster their confidence if they feel they took the Suns best shot. From that point, anything can happen. Laker fans may in fact be delusional to think that they can win, but we thought that last year and so did you. We were both a rebound away from being wrong. This is not the forgone conclusion that it seems to be.

Apr.20 at 8:22 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Shouldn’t you be a tiny little bit paranoid if you’re a PHX fan? Yes, we know, you have Amare this year, but does that mean the series is “locked up”? There’s a reason they play the games. It’s because like Chris Rock said about lady having guy friends, “YA NEVER KNOW”.

Apr.20 at 8:29 pm

SwingMan says:
Fair enough, Max….. Reggie, are you kidding? Really?

Apr.20 at 8:31 pm

DP says:
KOBE. That is all the Lakers need(with a little help from Lamar). play wit it.

Apr.20 at 8:33 pm

Max Airington says:
See you Sunday.

Apr.20 at 8:40 pm

tjkwatro says:
hell yeah lakers in 7. Amare, as good as he is offensively cant play a lick of D. Hell, even Erick freakin Dampier has shat on him this season. What’s he gonna do when Kwame, Bynum and Ronny attacks him all night. You guys can quote me on this(and i know suns fans will think im crazy): Bynum is gonna shit on the suns. Kobe will do his thing. Marion cant even dream of stopping LO. And Ronny is gonna clothesline Raja Bell if he tries some shit on Kobe.

Apr.20 at 8:57 pm

Jonathan says:
Lakers in 7. Kobe is going to take a lot of shots.

Apr.20 at 9:37 pm

LovetheSlam says:
Mutoni. Why aren’t you doing the Toronto series?

Apr.20 at 9:56 pm

Hersey says:
Kobe could have a big series but if forces the issue against Raja or Marion won’t help his team beat Phoenix. Missed jumpers equals fast breaks. Say what you want about the Suns defense, their offense covers up a lot of holes. The Lakers on the other hand gave up more points per game than the Suns. Kobe can’t score 50 and guard everybody- the last couple games he didn’t guard Raja very well. I agree that we don’t know what will happen but Suns fans should expect a victory.

Apr.20 at 10:11 pm

Shelbie says:
for get all of ya’ll phoenix is gonna take it home…(phoenix fan) oh and if ur a lakers fan u got 2 be paranoid least thats what i think…like it says in the SLAM edition THANK YOU FOR SMOKING!!!The Phoenix Suns have burned through the league with their turbo-charged offense. Can they win a TITLE?…(YES)…The Suns determind to find out their way-by always playing with fire.

Apr.20 at 10:19 pm

Shelbie says:
and amare, marion, and bell ain’t the only good ones on the team steve nash is the top key 2 their offense he helps them win their games and if he wasn’t on the team they wouldn’t be able 2 find another point guard 4 that team like steve nash…(phoenix fan)

Apr.20 at 10:25 pm

Shelbie says:
and just becuz Lakers beat the Suns that last game dont make them the best and when Kobe dunked over Nash that should of been called a charge on him…(phoenix fan)

Apr.20 at 10:35 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m thinking it’s possible that the Lakers could have a game where they score under 100 as a team but Kobe has 60. His arm might fall off by the end of the series, no matter how many games it goes.

Apr.21 at 12:49 am

Sam Rubenstein says:
Mutoni, I feel your pain from the Tim Thomas game, but game 4 was bananas. Smush stealing the ball, Kobe hitting the shot. That was as good as it gets.

Apr.21 at 1:11 am

Chris T. says:
Max Shut ‘Em Down, Pete Rock styles with the broken record analogy. Lakers in 7 if they come to play. The two major factors are Kobe being cold (which come on, how often does that happen) or the Suns being cold from deep. If the Suns are cold, they can’t really rely on interior scoring to get them through. Marion and Stoudamire combined will barely make up for what Kobe hangs on the Suns this season. The Lakers bench had better come to play.

Apr.21 at 2:29 am

rob stewart says:
one talented player is enough to win a game or two, but the best team (this includes passing the ball KOBE) usually wins the series. Suns in 4

Apr.21 at 3:59 am

BUM says:
All right fuckin’ Laker haters, the Suns ain’t got Tim “Fuckin’ Bitch I hope you loose all your money to a hooker ‘cuase you can’t get head with out payin’ some day I’ll be laughting at your broke ass” Thomas. Nuff said.

Mack says:
Why is everyone hating on the Suns? Just cuz they`re star studded, don`t mean everyone has to gang up on Nash and co. I`m a Mavs fan, and I personally think they are gonna win the title. Lakers are two dimensional. Kobe and Lamar. Kwame Brown? Overrated, ever since draft day. Smush Parker? Good once in a while. Brian Cook, Luke Walton, Ronny Turiaf, Jordan Farmar, all in need of improvement. I`m not saying the Lakers suck, I`m saying they don`t have a good chance of winning versus Phoenix. Unless Kobe pulls an NBA-Finals-Dwyane-Wade and averages almost 40 points a game.

I hate phoenix more than anything in the world. watch Amare in the key when nash drives, hes there for 10 seconds eveyr time!!! And they wont call over the back on marion or amare but thats ALL they do EVERY time there’s a rebound they just swat at it!!! My heart says Lakers in 7, but the officiating killed me so bad this game, I just want my beloved purple and gold to win…

Apr.23 at 12:54 am

1hush D says:
I would take Amare against the Lakers over Tim Thomas against the Lakers anyday. Also, Barbosa is finishing at the rim more this year. Remember how many he missed last year? Just like last year, Kobe will lay 50 on the Suns in a game that the Lakers lose to the Suns. Mutoni, shame on you for creating another Laker fan.

SUNS IN FIVE…AND EVEN SOMEONE MENTALLY CHALLENGE WOULD KNOW THAT.

Agree with tyke. Might even be four. The lakeshow doesn’t stand a fucking chance, to be honest. Kobe has a CBA cast around him, and the Suns have the their best team since ‘93. This isn’t going to be interestig, it’s going to be routine. And the spurs and mavs lost last night, which is much more interesting. Yo Dallas, can anyone say ‘Sonics ‘94′?
