Celtic Pride
Apparently Sebastian Telfair hasn’t made it all the way through the fire yet.
Nothing’s officially official yet, but it appears that Sebastian Telfair’s latest run-in with The Man will make him an ex-Celtic.
“The facts and circumstances of his case have not been determined, but he does not have a Celtics locker and we do not anticipate that he will,” [team managing partner Wyc] Grousbeck said in an e-mail. He did not say how the team would handle the remaining season on Telfair’s contract.
It’s obvious that the Celtics won’t have any trouble paying Telfair even if he isn’t with the team. After all, I think they’re STILL paying Vin Baker. But one does have to wonder if this would have been a waivable offense (caught speeding with a suspended license and a loaded handgun under the passenger seat) had Telfair played more like the lottery pick he once was and less like a late-season call-up from the D-League. Just ask Zach Randolph (although Z-Bo was smart enough not to be driving—and to have a concealed-carry permit, yikes). It probably didn’t help that this latest incident took place so recently after the tragedy at Virginia Tech.
Bassy’ll most likely still be in the NBA next year. After all, he’s only 21 years old, and despite his underwhelming stats, he’s still shown flashes of what made Portland select him with the 13th overall pick of the 2004 NBA draft. (He definitely outplayed cousin Stephon Marbury in a preseason game at MSG before having to leave in the second half, for, um, OK nevermind.)
The best part of this latest story, though? Apparently it’s his girlfriend’s gun AGAIN.
[Telfair’s attorney, Ed] Hayes said the gun was registered to Telfair’s girlfriend, whom he said was Telfair’s common law wife, and that Telfair was borrowing the SUV she normally uses.
You’ll recall it was apparently his girl’s gun that he was caught with while boarding the Blazers team plane a little over a year ago. Maybe Bassy needs to hire TSA agents to work at his house and garage. Or hire a bodyguard for his girl.
Turn it around, Sebastian. Before it’s too late.

i’m sick of this kid’s haters…no he has not played to his pick or shoe deal but why are the critics so harsh on this kid…anyone who saw through the fire can not help but root for him and want to see him blow up in the league…why are teams so willing to let him go…bad work ethic?…do they not see potential…i hope this motivates him because after seeing him live in high school several times i became a fan of his game…good luck to him and i hope he can live up…someday…to the hype slam and others created around him…lebron and his cover still my favorite

ppl are hatin cuz they expected a lot from him. some was other ppl’s fault for hyping him, and some of it was his own fault b/c he’s good enough to warrant it. look at lebron n kobe, b/c ppl know what they’re capable of, there’s the criticism that they could even be better. but well, considering the trouble he’s gotten in w/out actually having done shit in the league yet… that’s a problem. i’m sure the ppl that saw dajuan wagner score 100 in high school, live, thought he woulda been something too…

Russ ain’t a hater. What he wrote is real talk, Bassy needs to take advantage of the 2nd and now about to be 3rd chance he is given to maximize on his opportunity to play ball in the NBA. I know Doc didn’t give him a lot of run, but he can still carve a niche in the league, but he has got to stop getting caught up out there in the streets. But he is still young and hopefully he will learn from his mistakes and still have a decent career.

It’s worth noting that Chad Ford wrote a column (for Insider) stating all the reasons why waiving Telfair outright could be a bad business decision for the Celtics. But sometimes it can’t just be about business. Innocent until proven guilty, yes. In a court of law. But if nothing else this is a case of bad decision making. REPEATED bad decision making. Which isn’t what you look for from a point guard.

If he didn’t know the gun was in the car (which may or may not be true), he would effectively be being fired for speeding. Sounds a little harsh to me. He definitely needs to tell his missus to leave the firearms at home. Or she should tell him to stop blaming her for his f*ck ups. One or the other.

All I got from watching “Through the Fire” was that he was a highly-recruited and very-talented prep player. If there was anyone to root for, it was his brother, who was working hard in Europe and making sure Bassy didn’t get soft.

Hey Russ, take this: You’re such a hater, it’s like you’ve been drinking a high-calorie thirst-quenching beverage that actually MAKES you hate — It’s called “HATER”-ade. Get it? Haterade! I’m mad clever, yo!

Telfair knows his job is better than anyone. If the team said not to do anything stupid, as an employee that’s what he needed to do.
In regards to his skills, his play fit that “3rd string point guard on the 2nd worst team in the league” shoe perfectly.
