The D.A.Y. of San Antonio in the never lose club

Only 2 games while the conference tourneys take over.

By Sam Rubenstein

Fri-day! Only two games? Two games that weren’t even all that? Finally a nice relaxing morning.

SAN ANTONIO 100 SACRAMENTO 93
The Spurs were struggling on the defensive end a few weeks ago, but not anymore. The Kings, who were still winning games without Ron Ron, had the lead in the fourth but Tony Parker sparked a 9-0 run to put the game on ice. Manu Ginobili scored 16 of his 31 in the fourth, and three of his five three pointers. The re-emergence of Manu has been as big a key as anything to the Spurs 11 game winning streak. Kevin Martin led the Kings with 26 and 12. Corliss Williamson added 21 off the bench. So here’s the question of the D.A.Y., are the Mavs, Suns, and Spurs a Cerberus-like 3 headed monster, NBA teams playing at a higher level? Or do 27 teams just suck? A little of column A, a little of column B, I’d say. Mostly B though.
CHICAGO 100 ORLANDO 76
The Bulls are the best at getting blown out one game and blowing someone else out the next one. Or the other way, like when they opened the season with a 40 point smackdown of the champs, then came back and gave no effort. Consistency is not their strength. It will be interesting to see how they handle a long playoff run, if such a thing is waiting for them in the future. This particular game against Orlando ws over by halftime. Grant Hill played, if that matters to you. Dwight Howard had 17 and 14, and that was basically it for Orlando. Ben Gordon led the Bulls with 25.
Obviously, it was all about college basketball and the conference tournaments last night. UCLA went down in flames, the Wake Forest-GTech game was a borderline classic. We’ll have a slamonline readers bracket up for the tourney like last year. The winner gets big PRIZES… we’ll come up with something.

I really love how Charley Rosen watches one game of Dwight Howard, against one of the best defensive centers in the L, and then tells us that he is underachieving and his overall game is filled with holes. http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/6550088
Dude kills me with his articles. Yeah Dwight has some improving to do but he’s 21 and is being dissected like he’s a veteran who can never lead his team to a championship. Pulleezze. Anyway, now that that’s out of the way, and since both NBA games were pretty much duds, Player of the D.A.Y., IMO, should go to one of three kids on the college level who straight killed it last night. Ayinde Ubaka (yeah, I had to look that up) gave UCLA the business last night and was nothing short of cash in OT. Big Baby had a monster 25 and 15 and looked dominant (no homo, although there is apparently some of that going around in Baton Rouge) in LSU’s win over Tennessee. And finally, anyone who gives Duke 30 and helps his team win the game, Brandon Costner, should get some love. My apologies for the long post and have a great day. Hallelujah Hollaback!

Funny how just a couple weeks ago Lang wrote a piece dismissing any chances the spurs could have at the title. They are probably still a step behind the Mavs and Suns, but how in hell can we say the SPurs don’t have a chance, for god’s sake? Don’t they have the best big man in the League and a more than capable supporting cast?

typical san antonio to fly under the radar for most the year, let everyone get the press. then all of a sudden, playoff time nears and ppl begin to realize they’re still one of the team’s to beat. and what other all-star has no problem being moved to the bench and still plays outta his mind instead of sulking and bitching?

Thanks for letting us know that G.Hill played, Sam. It does matter to me.

Everyone knows that the Spurs are the Bipolar champs…they don’t win every year, just every other year.

I just read the usual drabble Charlie Rosen calls a column on how Dwight Howard isn’t that great and how he’s overrated, then hops back on the fence by saying he’s young and he’s got a long way to go…hmmm…the response “duh” comes to mind…Charlie Rosen drops ring pops like they’re real jewels…thanx for wasting my 10 minutes Chuck!!
He seems to forget how awful most high school big men are when they first come out…but then again, he seems to forget that he’s not coaching anymore and that the CBA doesn’t care about him either…Thus concludes my rant on “How Charley Rosen makes my brain chafe”

Sorry Lang…..

Shiz: I totally agree with your Rosen roast. That guy is a real douche. He has basically made a living off trashing young players and sucking marmalade off Phil Jackson’s nuts.

Mmmmm, marmalade

Mike says:
Dez: read some of Rosen’s articles on foxsports. He is in LOVE with Phil Jackson. Rosen’s entire career is based on being an assistant on Jackon’s CBA staff. It’s ridiculous.

and marmalade is delicious. But not Jackson-nut marmalade. I’m just having fun saying ‘marmalade’ over and over.

on an unrelated note, does anyone think it can get any worse for the pacers? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/basketball/nba/03/08/pacers.mascot.ap/index.html

I like this part of the NBA season. The time when the marquee players start playing with increased intensity. Basically, when they start trying.

I was finished with Charley Rosen when he said LeBron would never be more than an average NBA player.
