Starbury Expansion
Steph joins forces with Big Ben…
We did a lot of coverage last sumer about the launch of Stephon Marbury’s low-priced Starbury shoe line. Partly because of the surprising runaway success of the line, partly because Steph is my main man.
Well, it don’t stop. Earlier this week, Steph announced that Ben Wallace was joining the family. They’ll both wear Starbury’s the rest of the season, and next season Ben Wallace will have his own signature shoe. (And in a neat bit of coincidence, since the whole focus of the Starbury line is saving money, since both guys wear the number 3 they can share clothes until Big Ben’s stuff drops.)
I love what Big Ben said at the press conference announcing the deal:
“Kids don’t really understand what it takes to go out and buy a pair of $300 pair of shoes. We don’t understand the pressure we put on our parents when we’re growing up. This is one of the things where I think the parents will appreciate it a lot more than the kids right now because it eliminates so much stress from the parents. All parents want to see their kids have nice things.”
The line has also expanded to the point that there’s now over 200 products in the line, all under $15.
And I still don’t have a pair of the shoes. I’ve been by the Steve and Barry’s store in Midtown Manhattan a few times looking for kicks, but they never had my size (13) in stock because they’d always sell out so quickly. I’ve been told shoes and gear were coming my way a few times since last summer, but for whatever reason I just never have gotten my hands on any.
We talked a lot about the look of the shoe when they dropped, but now, nine months later, those of you who have copped some of the Starbury’s, how did they work out for you?

$300 for shoes? Where does Big Ben shop? Also, Big Ben wearing shoes with Steph’s name on them just seems weird. It’s likeādamn, I wanted to come up with a good hip-hop analogy, but my brain fell out.

Is it anything like Nas wearing a Roc chain? I saw some Starbury’s that look like AF1’s and I was actually impressed with them. Im a swoosh whore, but Ill probably buy a pair just to show support. It is only $15.

No, not like that. Dammit. It’s like some rock-solid workmanlike rapper signing to a label run by some me-first flashy showboat. Like Common joining Dipset or something.

Also, the best Starburys BY FAR are the New Balance knockoffs. For $10? Don’t sleep.

marbury outgunned lebron last night. starbury won over nike james. i saw the 2 talking during a break in action i.e. a knicks player was taking a foul shot.
i can just imagine their conversation going this way: stephon: hey dude.my shoes are selling like hotcakes.everybody lauded me for starbury shoes’ $15 price tag.in fact, abc’s primetime featured me in its show. lebron : oh yeah. sorry steph.i missed the show.i was to busy admiring my 30,00 sq.ft. house financed by my nike deal.architecture digest wants to cover it! steph : touche.

I just picked up a pair of white/blue’s from Steve and Barry’s in Orlando. Shoes look tight, are pretty comfortable and well worth $15 DOLLARS! Plus they don’t look horrible or cheap like Shaq’s Dunkman’s that they sell at Payless and Wal-Mart. I got the shoes, some shorts and a hat for $35.00. That’s the price of a Jordan T-Shirt nowadays. Good lookin’ out Steph, for the people that need it.

Mike says:
Does anybody know if the Starbury shoes are available anywhere in Canada? I only read about them being sold at Steve and Barry’s. We gotta get at Steph to push them into Foot Lockers or some other chain so I can get my hands on a pair. For $15, they’re worth a try.

the starbury’s i copped, after a long a** wait, are solid shoes. Now I’m a shoe collector, and to paraphrase the immortal Chappelle, I only ball in the finest kicks. I must say, the Starbury are a good shoe for the price being paid. I’ve balled in them and the support is there but the heel. But it’s nothing a little insole couldn’t cure. big up to Ben for speaking the truth and standing for something other than a contract.

6. Jo Jo English (old school Bulls)

Just to chime in. The inexspensive sneaker concept is great. Take this from someone who has become addicited to buying sneakers because he couldn’t afford them as a youth. What Steph has done should be applauded.
Now as far as performanace. I have played a tremendous amount in my pair of white on white Starbury 1’s. The ankle and foot support is great for me. The only knock I had was the cushioning. But like it was said above I added an insole and voila, I got a pair of quality ballin’ shoes for 15 bucks and a lil gas…The rest of the line is cool as well…$7 T-SHirts…$10 hoop shorts, that are baggy and comfy….you cant beat it…heck you can get a whole sweat suit for 20 bucks…its about economics and affordability…
Mar.29 at 3:09 pm
Ben Couch says:
I’ve used the Starbury One to ball and work out in. They definitely need an insole - the sole is dumb thin - and you have to break them in a little before they get comfortable, but it’s been smooth sailing since. I’m with Russ about the NB knockoffs being the dopest ones, though I haven’t copped b/c I couldn’t find them anywhere. The Twos look pretty dope though - I’m definitely making the effort to snag a pair this weekend when I’m home in NYC …

Good for Big Benny…Lang, I feel you…I been searchin for a 13 in the low-top Force mock-ups since forever!! They’re more rare than vintage MJ’s. Laugh if yall want, but try and find a pair and you’ll see.

I was able to check the whole line at Steve and Barry’s at Manhattan Mall. The New Balance knockoffs are really nice. Black and gray. Those are $9.99. Crazy! They are just as comfy as NBs. Stylish beater kicks to protect my AF1s on rainy days. The hoops hi-tops felt a little odd in the toebox for me. But fit is very individual. I like And1s for balling. I love this momentum for Steph’s mission. Hope it makes the big companies react.

I agree Simmons is entertaining, but I kinda lost taste for him a little bit when he kept a running March Madness diary with some of his friends, and some team consisting of mostly black players was trouncing an all-white team (can’t recall which they were) and he and his friends were saying stuff like “whatever, they’ll be working for us in 10 years” (since they were rooting for the white team). Extremely uncool. I’d actually like to see a good old beef between Slam and him now. Someone needs to knock him down a peg or two anyways.

Chris Paul is with Jordan Brand, so it’s HIGHLY unlikely that he’d join Team Starbury. Ditto for Dwyane Wade, seeing that Converse is basically his company. And ditto for Allen “Reebok” Iverson. The other active 3’s are Slava Medvedenko (Hawks), Shammond Williams (Lakers), Al Harrington (Warriors), Gerald Wallace (Bobcats), Sasha Pavlovic (Cavs), Troy Murphy (Pacers), Shareef Abdur-Rahim (Kings), Bob Sura (Rockets), Daniel Ewing (Clippers), Chucky Atkins (Grizzlies), Lynn Greer (Sonics), Boris Diaw (Suns) and Caron Butler (Wizards). Marbury is a joke, and Big Ben should’ve stayed away from this. I couldn’t allow anybody to buy some $15 shoes. I couldn’t do it. I was wearing ProWings and such when I was young, and now that I’m grown, I’ll never even pick up a pair of some $15 shoes. And basketball shoes are just like any other industry: the best sells at a higher price. $80 and up for me. And if you think about it, Steph just did this for P.R. He’s a joke.

Educate yourself a little more on sneaker manufacturing, Rich. And judge shoes on their real quality and value, not the price tag.
By your “$80 theory”, Reeboks suddenly become comfortable and durable?
Don’t think so.
Also, I’d rather buy $15 Starbury’s than the pieces of sh-t Nike puts out for their ‘value’ $80-100 line. I don’t think I have to state the well known fact that it takes less than $10 per pair to manufacture the most expensive bball shoe, including Jordans and the whole Nike line.
No way are 1000% price markups really justified, they just sell for $100-150 cuz there’s hype and demand. Starbury chose to endorse a brand with products that are actually good, without the ridiculous price markup.
Try to appreciate it instead of acting like you’re cool and sh-t. (P.S. I also wore skippies as a kid, btw)
Mar.30 at 2:33 pm
Shiz says:
Gus: I feel where you’re coming from but that still doesn’t necessarily equate low price with low quality. Back in 90 somthing (cant remember the year) when Webber came out with his Air Max jumpoff’s and everyone was talking cuz it was the first “Nike” shoe to hit “Jordan” price range. Anyway, my homeboy Chris bought em and the air bubble popped the 1st time he used em during a casual open gym run…8th grade open gym mind you…so there goes high price = high value…But the best part is, since you bought the Stars for twenty or less, you can still afford some NB’s or whatever. I don’t know your bank like that but if it’d happened with some shiny new $150 Nike runners, you’d be decidedly more pissed, Im sure.
Mar.30 at 2:44 pm
Escott Ingles says:
This is probably too late for anyone to catch, but I’ll throw it out there anyways. I copped a pair of the casual steph’s and that first design he dropped. As far as looks and casual comfort, they are well worth the money. But when it comes to ballin, they wear out like a mug. I’m extremelly rough on shoes to begin with, but the soles are already bout’ worn thin from maybe three months of solid play (i.e: finding time to hit the courts 2 - 3 times a week for a few hours each time). I’ve also never had a serious ankle sprain - though countless minors - and my foot was sprained to the point of minor deformity for life while wearing the stephs, but that’s probably just bad luck. I’m rambling. Anyways, they look nice enough, and even if they do wear out every 6 months to a year for you it’s still hell of a lot cheaper than most shoes. No Answers, but then again what is.

I sure do like that Starbury quote on being owned. James continues to look like not only did he skip college but highschool as well. I, personally, will not touch Phil Knight’s product unless I buy it second hand. I just hope that Stephon’s next step is to create his own American factories to make the shoe. In order to keep them cheap the wages would have to be low but perhaps the workers could own the factory and shares in the overall product line.

I tried on a pair of the starbury II’s yesterday. They are built at the level of a $40-75 nike shoe in my opinion. Not extremely durable or cushioned (no zoom air or dmx equivalent). But they are a decent shoe for only $15. I did cop the low top chilling shoes that look like air force ones.

I’ve been playing ball my whole life. I grew up in Pro Wings, but once I hit 7th grade it was all about the bling. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Adidas and some Adidas Patrick Ewings were my first loves, followed closely by the Andre Aggassi blue/orange tennis kicks. Totally awesome! Anyway, I’m older now, and I DO ball in teh Melo 5.5’s. However, I bought the Starbury 1’s last year, the white with dark blue, and they are GREAT for stylin’ and profilin’! They look great with jeans, but I’ve never played in them. Very comfortable, but if I wanted to play in them, I’d have to get an insole I think. Big Ben signing with Starbury is awesome! If the NBA could get a group of guys who’s anti-$$$, the league image will skyrocket, as will the popularity of those signed players.
Dermarr Johnson should sign! Recognize! I wear a 15 in the Melo’s, but a 14 in everything else. I bought a 13 in the Starbury’s cuase anything higher than an 11 is NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to find…but the 13’s worked decently. I have seen a few pair of 14 and 15’s floating around out here in Colorado, but they’re rare. Nobody but me an a friend own them out here…you never see them. However, everytime I go to teh mall with them on, I always get asked what kind of shoes tehy are. They look real nice.

Why should the players be anti-money? Why shouldn’t the players get all that they can? The NBA isn’t anti-money,the Ncaa isn’t anti-money. But the players should be? It seems to me that the fans should be anti-money by stop worrying about what’s in someone else’s wallet. Walk it like you talk it. 1hushD, it sounds like you might have skipped some schooling yourself. Stephon Marbury is lying when he talks about “owning himself” Marbury was hooked to this deal by a man named Jordan Bazant who convinced Marbury to lend his name to a sports apparel retailer.
Apr.2 at 3:16 pm
bakers' dozen (12-13) says:
By anti-money I don’t mean that they shouldn’t get paid. It would just be nice to see some people who DON’T hold out for the most cash they can. Example: Yakhouba Diawara of the nuggets was a breath of fresh air when he turned down nearly 25% more money to sign with Dallas and instead signed with teh Nuggets since they gave him his shot. It’s just good to see that money isn’t the main factor in some people’s lives. That being said, I jsut went out at lunch and purchased the Starbury Crossover LE in Mercury Gray, Iron Gray, White, and Water. Very nice indeed! They didn’t have a lot of other kinds, htough. Very limited in the SB 2 makeup, and had one other color in the crossovers…the blue and yellow (yellow was too strong on my huge foot), and teh women’s shoes looked very nice! Might pick some up for the wife.

Steve and Barry’s was packed yesterday morning. I had no idea I would be copping 11 pairs. I truly believe that the patent crossove LE is going to change the sneaker industry. The 1st crossover was rather plain however, The Crossover LE already puts many special edition Air Force 1’s,Bape Stas and Pro keds to shame. I was not prepared for this. By the way 11 pairs for $165.00? You tell me who won?!

Yo Eric, all that’s true. Why shouldn’t Lebron get $90 million. That’s dumb for ‘Starbury’ to say something about someone getting PAID for wearing shoes. Who wouldn’t want that kind of money for having a shoe designed just for YOU. Come on Steph, you weren’t saying that when you had AND1’s and Nikes on your feet. Such a hypocrite.

bakers' dozen (12-13) says:
By that same rationale why does LeBron feel the need to talk smack about Steph’s shoe (which is probably inferior to LeBrons’ in all honesty) when Steph’s trying to give back to the community? That’s not needed. It’s like a varsity player making fun of a JV player, not called for at all.

For $15 these shoes looks tight! IMO these guys are makin’ history, being a pioneer if I may say. I still can’t find a pair in my country though.

bakers’ dozen I got the crossovers as well and they are cool to wear around. I hate to admit it but the girls Starbury’s actually look more stylish for girls than the guys shoes look for guys. Buy a pair for your wife. Also I understand Lebron James’ comment. He is just trying to say Nike makes high quality shoes. What is he supposed to say, I mean Nike is paying him millions.

bakers' dozen (12-13) says:
Well yeah, and in all honesty, LeBron’s shoes are probably more High Tech, if you follow me. Probably a lot more put into them than you’d think. I wish that the Starbury Tornado (or whatever it’s called) was available in men’s! Those are some nice looking, and light running shoes for women! I got th Crossover LE in baby blue and gray, and they’re really nice. I got them yesterday, and when I went to the store last night I caught 2 guys scoping them out. To me they look liek a mixture of Kix and AF1’s. I was going to get the dark blue and yellow, but my big foot (14/15) looked stupid with the long yellow portion right on top. Plus, these will match all my Nuggets’ gear! If anybody sees any of the greens in a 13, let me know. The 13 actually fits better in the Crossover style, but the 14’s are nice in the SB 2 style. I want the green Crossovers, the light blue Surf Style (or whatever it’s called), and some SB 2’s. These are some nice kicks for only $15! Can’t wait to see the Big Bens!

Also, it seems as if this year’s model has a lot more cushioning than last year’s. I ahvn’et tried the new Cyclones, but last year’s were awful. I liked the look, but they were just crappy on the inside. If the new Cyclones have better cusioning, I”ll buy 2 pair easy. I’m a Starbury supporter all the way! I even bought our basketball team matching jerseys for our season! $10 a pop, that’s a full team’s jerseys for $100! They can buy their own shorts, though. The new threads are dope! I’d love to get that ash colored sweat suit.

rob stewart says:
I totally support the Starbury’s but I can’t say the cushioning is better than zoom air
Apr.4 at 11:21 am
bakers' dozen (12-13) says:
I can agree with that. But the Max 360 and 180 is way better than all of the above for cushioning. Of course, I’m a post player, so I like the cushioning. I’ve been playing a lot of 2 and 3 this season (yes I’m 32 years old, but I can still move) and as such have started to like the lighter shoes like the Melo 5.5, my kick of choice. The SB’s are getting better, though, and I hope they continue to stay at $15 and get better in quality. The difference between last year and this year with the SB 1 and 2 is amazing!

I got the Star 1’s in support of Steph. Play ball in them all the time and they’re excellent and totally worth more per value than any Nike’s I’ve ever owned. The new line just came out and are completely gone in Manhattan Mall, but I managed to snag a pair of the 2’s and the Cyclones and I love them both. The quality and look have improved tremendously. The Starbury line is becoming extremely popular and I think is going to be a major player in the shoe industry to come. My only fear is that the evil love of money and greed doesnt seep into anyones minds and make this into a profit driven effort. Stay true steph and keep serving the people. We appreciate it.

For a guy like me who played NYC basketball against Steph (I went to Brooklyn Tech) what he has done is amazing. I bought the Bape looking 2’s (grey and one w/ yellow on top of toe) and they are comfy as hell. A guy on my job bought some custom made Nikes for $110 and mine look better than his. His idea will keep families looking nice for years. I am trying to get every AF1 looking sneaker possible and for the price of one pair of AF1s I’ll have 5 pairs of crossovers. 1st the internet and now Starbury’s ? Kids born in the 21st Century definitely have it better. Steph from one Brooklyn man (East NY) from a big family (oldest of 6) to you BIG UP BROOKLYN!!

i also cant wait to see the Big Ben versions.. just wonder how they’d design the shoes that would much Big Ben’s bangin’ low post game. It totally needs stability for pivoting and superb cushioning to support the weight of big guys runnin’ and reboundin’ and dunkin’. i think the Starbury’s that Ben is wearin now is kinda like too light and doesnt match his figure. coz the Starbury’s are originally designed for diminutive but sleek guards who feeds in a run and gun type of game.. Starbury should make the Big Ben’s literally big, in design and overall engineering, to match not only the game of big playaz but also their built. anyhow, the Two’s are still cool and better, coming out after all those feedbacks and suggestions on the feel of the One’s. Way to go Starbury! keep em comin’

Personally, I’m proud of steph and Big Ben. You can talk about dwyane Wade being a hero like the flash, but then what? $100 for a pair of (sexy) sneakers? No sir. If you want a hero, take a look at No.3 on the kniks and the bulls: two guys trying to make life better for others by saving us some cash money.

Shiz: What is the point of buying shoes and buying insoles also? If they ain’t comfortable, don’t buy ‘em. If I try them on and don’t like the feel, I don’t cop. I don’t know, maybe you have bad feet. I’m serious, I’m not trying to crack or anything, but I don’t know anyone who buys kicks and insoles also. And what I meant by the every 2-3 days thing was that a pair of $15 shoes probably aren’t built for everyday wear. I’m very hard on my sneakers, so I would rather spend my $100-plus on some Nikes and feel like I got my money’s worth once I’ve worn them to the club for a few months, then wore them to play ball after that, and then wore them to work after that. When you look at it like that, you’ve had the same shoes for close to a year, and there isn’t anything you haven’t done in them. That’s getting your money’s worth, and I don’t think that would be possible in the Starburys.
