Player of the D.A.Y.

One game mattered.

By Sam Rubenstein

Since I wasn’t feeling well last night, I was not able to watch the big TNT showdown of LeBron and the default Eastern Conference power house Cavs in the weakest conference ever verus the Dallas Mavericks, a team that is putting together a run of historical dominance. Ever since the 0-4 start, the Mavs have lost 5 games. In order for them to not win the championship, they have to lose seven four times in a much shorter period. (my bad.)
I love the way the Suns play, and now that Amare is approaching being Amare, Phoenix does have a chance at knocking Dallas off. Not a great one though. The Mavs are one of the best teams we have ever seen, and it’s time to start treating them like it. LeBron had a monster 39 point game, but according to some of your comments on the D.A.Y., he missed some more free throws at crunch time. He had a nasty dunk, but not in a win.

Meanwhile, Dirk Nowitzki just keeps putting up winning numbers without monopolizing the ball. His 24, 11, and 7 were great, and still left room for Jason Terry’s 20 and Josh Howard’s 17 on 15 shots each.

Player of the D.A.Y. is Dirk. The MVP race is between him and Steve Nash. The Suns rarely lose when Nash is playing, but the Mavs never lose period.

Dirk just took over in the 4th. I didn’t even notice he had so many assists till he started scoring. Also, Terry just does not miss from 3. and Howard is an absolute beast. How was there any hesitation on this guy going into the ASG? Dallas to win everything, although I would rather see the Suns

You know, being a Heat fan, I’ve been trying to hate Dallas (I like I used to hate the Knicks, by the way), but I just can’t. If you love “the game of basketball”, and y’all know I do, you gotta like the way Dallas plays. And Sam nails it when he says that Dirk gets his unselfishly. Now, don’t get it twisted, if the rematch of the century is on come June, I will bring the hateration! :-) But, if not, it will be fun to watch Dallas destroy whatever team not-named-Heat.

Mavs are playing great and I enjoy it but lets not forget that they lost four straight last year when they were also playing great basketball.

yeah, elvis, and here’s hoping their slump comes at the same time this year and against the same opponent!

Dirk better win MVP. MJ never won 3 in a row. Nash never should.

Reggie Evans says:
The MVP award should just be called the Best Teammates award.

Tom Jackson says:
Without Dirk, Dallas wins 45 games and makes it to the second round of the Western playoffs. Without Nash, Phoenix doesn’t even make the playoffs. Quit hating on Nash, he’s the best in the league, deal with it.

Troy says:
i.e. punish Dirk for having a better overall team than Nash?
or punish Dirk for being healthier than Nash so no one ever gets to apply the ‘how would team x do without y’ to the Mavs. You would think that durability and health would make a player more valuable not less.

mdshuai says:
ooh, zing. I must agree with Troy on this one. Good call.

The Suns should be able to make the playoffs without Nash. They have the roster for it. They would be better than the Clippers (8th) and the Twolves (9th).

Lebron needs to call Gilbert.

Reggie Evans says:
Who care how the team does without them. How good is the player and are they doing better than anyone else would do given their situation/team?

Mar.2 at 8:40 pm

whooo! says:
ppl make so many excuses for the suns losing w/out nash, saying he’s so good, they can’t even function when he doesn’t play. you have a f’n monster in amare, and the matrix who will do everything on the court. blame the coach or the players palying more than make excuses. dirk was mvp last year, he better get that shit for being it this year too!

Dirk is no where near as worthy of the MVP as Steve is. Don’t yall watch basketball???

Mar.2 at 9:43 pm

Reggie Evans says:
How good is the player and is said player doing better than anyone else in the L would do given said player’s situation and team?

Mar.2 at 10:01 pm

FLUXLAND says:
Brooke, put down the glass pipe or take off them sunglasses while you watch games. Dirk will win the MVP and he’s TWICE as worthy as Steve. Sorry, but I think carrying your team while scoring is more valuable then carrying your team while dishing the ball.

I’m still going to go with Dirk gets tired in the playoffs and the mavs get bounced in the second round. Dirk played right through to the finals and then played in the worlds. Too much high calibre basketball equals a tired dirk

Tariq says:
The MVP should be replaced by the BPTGEWC: Best Player on a Team Good Enough to Warrant Consideration. But any way you slice it, it’s still Dirk.

Mar.3 at 9:00 am

Tom Jackson says:
Tariq, it’s hard to call a guy “most valuable” to his team if they don’t even make the playoffs.

I’m with you Boyd. Got NO love for that huge blotch on the map called Texas. How terrible would it be to see Cuban celebrating after winning it all? terrible, terrible…

Chief says:
Nash is the MVP, you guys heard of Lenovo Stats? Yeah teh Suns are consistently in the top three for all the parts. Go check it on Nba.com. Oh and Nash has improved his stats. Last year Detroit had the record and Nash was the MVP. Ballin. Dirk deserved the player of the D.A.Y. but let’s not forget how everything changes in the playoffs. Oh and Nashty for life!
