LeBron and Stephon Hate on Each Other’s Shoes

Best beef this season.

by Marcel Mutoni

I’ve been posting about LeBron James a lot of late. I swear that I’m not doing it on purpose; the guy just can’t seem to keep his name out of the news. He appeared on some sure-to-be crap mixtape with Young Buck, the League told him to keep his kid off the Cavs bench, he bought a gi-normous house, he’s going to be hosting the ESPYs, his first lawnmower ad dropped, and it just don’t stop.

Last night, he basically called Stephon Marbury’s shoes “low-standard” before the Cavs went up against the Knicks at the Gah’den.

Before the game, James took a little shot at Marbury’s $14.98 kicks, saying he couldn’t imagine endorsing a sneaker that cheap. “No, I don’t think so,” James said.

“Me being with Nike, we hold our standards high.”

When Stephon was told about LBJ’s crack, you knew he wasn’t going to just lay down and take it:

“I’d rather own than be owned.”

ZING!

Though I think Steph got the upper hand in this mini verbal war, LeBron is still the winner at the end of the day. I mean, King has something like a $90 million deal with the Swoosh, which I’m certain Stephon’s shoe deal comes nowhere near. Still, it was a pretty good comeback.

And remember, LeBron, Steph has Big Ben on his shoe squad now, so watch what you say.

All I know is, when Lebron came down the lane against the knicks, we damn near broke his back twice. Isiah, you animal!
Also, that new rookie we signed, must’ve gone 1 for 9 from the freethrow line. step up, rook!

Max Airington says:
LeBron really is like Mike.

Kadavour says:
u kinda see flashes of the “bad boys” defense when the knicks play at home. they really don’t take kindly to opponents showing off in the Garden.

Silky Slim says:
ā€œI’d rather own than be owned.ā€ is one of the greatest comeback lines of all time. How can LeBronze respond to that? Hey can’t! Yes, LeBronze has a $90 million dollar Nike endorsement deal, along with other endorsement deals. Marcel, if one guy has $200 million and the other guy has $100 million, what difference does that make? One guy just has bragging rights and an additional $100 million in the bank, but at the end of the day, both can live the type of lifestyles they want and both can afford to buy whatever they want. Steph is keeping more money in parents’ pockets and Nike is taking more money out of parents’ pockets. Steph is all about the kids and low income families, man! I’m riding with Steph on this issue.

mutoni says:
i’m definitely with steph here, don’t get me wrong. but you can’t convince me that having an additional $100 in the bank account is insignificant. if i had that kind of money, i wouldn’t even talk to people anymore.

Mar.29 at 2:10 pm

mutoni says:
*$100 mil

Mar.29 at 2:12 pm

Silky Slim says:
I think LeBronze and others equate reasonably priced or cheap sneakers as being low quality, which is a misguided way of thinking.

Mar.29 at 2:14 pm

Max Airington says:
Dont they all cost about the same to make?

Mar.29 at 2:27 pm

Silky Slim says:
If I had that kind of money, I would suddently start talking with an accent….like Tina Turner!

Sam Rubenstein says:
They’ll have to save LeBron’s appearance on Stars on Stars until sweeps week.
Steph wins the battle of ethics/principle. LeBron lends money to Warren Buffet.

Mar.29 at 2:43 pm

Vitor says:
Lebron should just buy the company that manufactures the Starbury shoes then. Pretty simple. It probably will cost a lot less than his new house.

Mar.29 at 2:47 pm

Silky Slim says:
Max, I think they cost about the same to make.

Lebron’s house is in Cleveland. My 1 bedroom apartment in Santa Barbara costs more.

Mar.29 at 3:11 pm

westcoast213 says:
Stephs shoes are garbage just like his game and the new york knicks……….

Mar.29 at 3:13 pm

Ben Couch says:
They cost about the same, it’s just that to keep it at $15, Steve and Barry has to limit the “extras” like straps, air bubbles and such.

Mar.29 at 3:18 pm

Boing Dynasty says:
I once bought a University of Miami “leather” jacket from Steve&Barry’s for 7 dollars. I then sold it on Ebay for 50.00, cause iam awsome.

Mar.29 at 3:36 pm

Sparker says:
i just started liking marbury one whole helluva lot more than i used to. and of course they cost the same to make. we’re all laughing about what nike pays lebron. but nike shoe buyers? you’re paying lebron.

Mar.29 at 3:36 pm

Shiz says:
all that money and still only shootin 60% from the line…shooting coach anyone? Rick Barry anyone?
AND Nike’s break down just as quick. Its either the toe mold or the side mold or the grip wears out…higher standard?

Mar.29 at 3:38 pm

mutoni says:
this kind of stuff just makes me glad i never got caught up in the shoe craze. never even owned a pair of jordans, although i did ‘borrow’ them from a friend for a couple of years.

Mar.29 at 3:40 pm

Shiz says:
I guess “higher standard” stands for little foreign kids toiling away in sweatshops these days…All hail the King of Sweatshops And Bad Free Throw Mechanics

Mar.29 at 3:42 pm

Mike says:
Steph is for the children. Just like the Wu-Tang Clan.

Mar.29 at 3:43 pm

Mike says:
I’m with Marbury on this one. I just want to get my hands on a pair of the sneakers so I can see if they are the same standard. Marbury’s shoes can be sold for so much less because he’s not making multimillion dollar commercials to market them. Steph’s shoes are like a mixtape. They’re selling strictly by word of mouth and props.

Mar.29 at 3:44 pm

Mike says:
Do the kids still say “props” nowadays?

Mar.29 at 3:52 pm

Punisher says:
Bron’s turned snob with all his $. How can you knock a shoe that starbury made so it could be affordable for poorer families. starbury owned his a$$ on that comeback he better keep his mouth shut and start trying to win a ring

Mar.29 at 3:59 pm

Benjamin says:
Both Steph and James shoes are made by little kids in China or India (only NB makes some of their shoes in US) but at least Steph uses that to help kids in the states.

DP says:
Whoa, Steph came back strong. I would buy Steph’s shoes instead of Lebron’s simply because as soon as I raise up enough money to buy Lebron shoes, they are freakin sold out at Foot Locker. But they always tell me his new shoes have just came out. Too bad I am always 100 dollars short. play wit it.

Mar.29 at 10:21 pm

Stallion says:
Nike’s may cost more but I wouldn’t be surprised if they have tons more designers and researchers (who would kind of like to be paid)for their shoe technology. The shoes still probably don’t need to be $150 though….

Mar.29 at 11:20 pm

JR says:
steph owned lebron. but all lebron would have to do to get back at him is get him to come to his house and lure him into the closet. we’ed never see steph again.

Mar.29 at 11:42 pm

Andrew says:
I saw those Starburys when I was in the states last year… no midsole to speak of, no midfoot shank for support, stability marginal (putting a hi-top on a sneaker does not make it more supportive, wish I had a link to the australian physiotherapist’s report on ankle injuries relative to wearing hi- or lo-top sneakers in basketball - pretty much one to one both ways - the only way to support an ankle is to tape it up, not to add a velcro strap ala AF1s and everything that follows). I have to go with Bron here, because his shoes are actually really bloody good (I have 2x the IIIs and love them)… cheap sneakers inevitably means more injuries… the starburys in no way have as much impact protection (hello full length Zoom Air inserts in the midsole) as even the most basic Nikes. Price aside, the Nikes are better shoes, although this doesn’t mean that they justify the price point… customers willing to pay the money justify the price point (I work in a professional fitting service store in Melbourne, we sell most Nikes at $10 or$20 more than the RRP, and still sell out).

Shuttlesworth, J says:
either way, they both don’t have a ring. I think that’s what matters. and honestly, I don’t see either one of them winning a ‘chip in $15 shoes or $200 shoes! PLEASE!

bigmike407 says:
That comment by Steph was so gangsta and oh so Brooklyn!!!! It’s like when ODB (God bless the dead!!!) got on stage at the Grammys and said ‘Puffy may win tonight but Wu-Tang is for the children’. Steph is for the children. And it’s not personal because I don’t buy either of these dudes’ shoes.

Mar.30 at 11:20 am

Rich says:
What is he talking about rather be an owner than owned? That’s garbage. Each person that has a job is owned. Don’t try it Steph, you a joke. Just like him saying he’s the best point guard in the league, dissing JKidd. Is he serious? Him leaving Minnesota for more cash, and still hasn’t won a playoff series. He’s too selfish, but this is a good P.R. move cause no one likes him in the league. Ask Q Rich.

TaylrMayd says:
Peep the line it better to own than be owned. Marbury doesn’t have an endorsement deal with the company, he owns part of the company. Even with the money Nike gave him, can Lebron say that… Not really….

Apr.2 at 5:35 pm

Rich says:
As much stuff as Lebron owns, you gotta be kidding me. Lebron could care less about owning Nike, he’s getting $90 million!!!! I’ll take that any day from Nike before Steve & Barry. Good job, Lebron, but I prefer Huaraches.

Apr.2 at 11:05 pm

Sesa says:
LeBron really aren’t sensitive. Some people will lose respect to LeBron because of this. I mean it’s great if you stood up to your sponsor, but must he diss others? This is a bad press for LeBron.

Lebron donates more of his money already than Marbury has in his entire career. Lebron is single handedly rebuilding the glenville projects in cleveland. Props to the king.

So the “owner” that pays Steph for playing basketball didn’t have a comment after this did he?

Lebron came out looking like a tool. Steph clearly exposed a little douche-ness in him.

steph all the way!!its not that the knicks are my favorite team, for as long as i live, but lebron has to learn to keep his mouth shut. don’t get me wrong, lebron’s lineup of shoes is friggin sick, but you can buy about 8 or 9 starbury’s with that money. maybe even add a few shirts here and there. i have 4 pairs of starbury 1’s already. i’m looking forward to buy that same amount(of shoes) for each pair of stabury’s that come out. some call me greedy, but i’m supportin my boy steph!! anywayz NEW YORK KNICKS 4 LIFE!!!!
if we hadn’t had all those damn injuries, we would hav probably been in the playoffs…

Noma says:
Lebron is a $90million slave, a house negro at that! “me and massa we hold our shoes to a higher standard”who is “we” he is supposed to have 10 years or so left in him. If he goes the way of Penny or Grant Hill nike will drop him, there is no “we”. There seems to be an association between expensive shoes and prevention of injury. ala Lebron quips that if he was wearing adidas he would have broken his ankle in game 1 (espn). Now he’s hating on a company who practically raised him and whom he betrayed. Anyway, most people don’t buy $150 shoes to play serious ball in anyway rarely fore even pick-up and real hoopers are good enought to get shoes from sponsors or play/practice in team shoes. So in the end shoe quality is a secondary issue, but as a professional athlete if Marbury can rock them so can I. As the sales go up the shoe will get even better. Lebron/Nike has been robbing us for years it started with MJ. if we buy they will sell that’s capitalism, so we can’t complain. question of the day: Which cost more shoe marketing or shoe research? I’d say the former. $100 is a lot for some air anyway. Plastic is cheap and isn’t air free?

C.Rich says:
i think LeBron still makes more than the ” Starbury ” shoe does. i mean i know way more people with Lebrons than them stupid stephon shoes. The Starburys are trash and id never roc dem kicks in my life

Jul.19 at 10:52 pm

kd says:
i support the starbury movement. Only thing Lebron cares about is that by the end of the day, he has money in the bank. Lebrons shoes only cost about 10 dollars to make. Same with starburys. but nike sells them for higher price, and dosent even pay good money to the kids in asia making the shoes.

Jul.24 at 12:06 pm

Slim says:
you guys are ignorant. LeBron is right. and to Noma yes people actually do buy $150 shoes to play serious ball in. i bought a pair of the new LeBron’s to play all my summer ball in. yeah they werent quite $150 it was around $110, but they are used for serious ball. that was one of the stuidest things ive ever seen posted anywhere.

Nov.19 at 12:32 am

noumena says:
LeBron is the worst basketball player ever. What kind of a hack thinks he’s good? Any guy who touches the ball as much as he does, as tall as he is, as heavy as he is, with parietal lobes as wide as he has, which probably means with as much peripheral vision as he has to pass the ball to the sides more efficiently with (that’s not to say he passes well–he sucks) can achieve the stats he has. Ugly shooting mechanics and terrible form. He waddles like a penguin and has size 100 feet. Plus apparently, there’s been revelation that he is avaricious. Really…

Mar.23 at 10:58 am

Wuz up says:
Well Starburys are sweet because for kids who cant afford much starburys are the way to go but for people who just wanna be gay and preeppy u can take the lebron way but they are both good shoes i own both but lebrons comfort rate on his shoes are very good they dont give blisters like starburys but it shoes both shoes are good
