60!
Lang Whitaker wonders, What more can I say?
Just finished watching the second half of Lakers/Grizzlies, and saw Kobe go for an insane 60.
Kobe was pretty much brilliant tonight, especially down the stretch when it was still a close game. For a while the Grizzlies — who, let’s be honest, will never be mistaken for a defensive juggernaut — were doubling Kobe with their point guard, basically giving Shammond Williams wide open threes. And at one point Kobe drove to the rim and threw a perfect behind-the-back pass to Kwame Brown, who treated the ball like a birthday cake and let it slip through his hands out of bounds.
Where Kobe was awesome was in the way he got his, especially in the second half. He didn’t seem to be forcing anything, instead dishing it when he was doubled and driving when he was covered one-on-one.
Oh, and the Lakers won. This makes them 3-0 in their last three games, in which Kobe has scored a combined 175 points.
The sports journalism world love trying to quantify and rate things, to decide who is the best of all time, which team would win in a seven game series, etcetera. And we could argue Kobe’s place among the all-time greats forever.
I don’t know what else to say about Kobe without being called a hater, so maybe, just this once, let’s all just shake our heads and agree that Kobe is really damn good.

I don’t understand why people hate that Kobe is aware of the records he makes and breaks and thinks about his place among the all-time greats. Isn’t that what it’s all about, wanting to be the best and killing yourself every night just to achieve those basketball milestones. Especailly watching as a fan, to know that he wants that record and wants the accolades. It seems like most times fans care more about accomplishments than the teams or players do and that makes it less fun to watch because why should we be so invested if they aren’t. It is a hell of a lot more worthwhile and entertaining seeing Kobe trying to conquer the league then watching some player who doesn’t care about the history of the game or its legacy.

Dillan says:
Kobe’s game looks much smoother and more efficient post Shaq. And he looks more determined. What i like, is that he puts the kind of fear in players everytime he touches the ball. The same kind of fear when the ball goes to Shaq, MJ, Bird, Magic, Wilt or any hall of famer for that matter. No matter what, a score will come. The current crop don’t bring the same kind of fear. I am not a Kobe fan.

So sick of the haters, no matter what Kobe does, they will say something negative. But I think it bothers us as Kobe fans more than it bothers him. When it heats up for him, he just goes out and does something crazy, that makes everyone (haters included) just say “Damn, he did it again” Also sick of this “Kobe is not worthy of MVP talk stuff” Nash and Dirk, Nash and Dirk, that is all I hear, makes me want to throw up. I will give you Dirk, i think he is having an unbelievable year, and his team is great, but I think Nash overrated. Give me Marion, and Staudamire, and thier role players, and I am good for at least 6 assists a game, and I haven’t balled since HS.
Team wise the Lakers may not be as good as thier teams, but niether one of those teams had to run with two of thier 5 starters for a majority of the year.

The thing that jumps out at me is that Kobe had to score 60 for the Lakers to beat the Grizzlies by 2. Kobe scoring dumptrucks of points is nice and all, but how bad is the rest of the Laker roster? If Kobe goes for 60 against the Griz, then the Lakers should have won by at least 20.

How did Memphis keep it to a 2 point game with Kobe scoring 60?…………. Keith, Ali was controversial for ethical and moral stances he took and his flamboyance. Kobe is controversial for his arrogance, rape charges and being a Laker………………………………………………. Memphis, Portland, and Minnesota….BM took it to them without getting suspended for elbowing someone in the face. That is worth a congratulations! When we talk of a watered down league, does that refer directly to defense?

This is playoff time…Kobe and Phil dont have time to keep teaching and re-teaching the triangle cuz Stone-hands-I-love-cake Kwame STILL hasn’t figured out how to catch. Let alone how to screen away and cut.
If it was Nash, and he’d gone for 60 and the Suns had only won by a bucket ya’ll would be saying “that’s why he’s the mvp” Dirk? same thing. Amare? It would have been “Oh son is a beast, blah blah” why cant muthafuckas just appreciate the gift that this man has. If it was A.I. it’d be “oh son got mad heart and a bum squad”. Make excuses for your all-star of choice, but give credit where its due. The man is unstoppable, bottom line.

Take a look at Melo’s assist and rebound numbers last night, in addition to his pedestrian 28 points. In a loss. And then take a look at Kobe’s rebounds and assists, in addition to scoring 25% of the points scored in the entire game. Make you wonder how often that happens - one player dropping 25% or more of the total points scored in a game.

Yeah…maybe he scored 60 because they needed it. Now thats a radical idea! But no he should let them loose and play the “right way”. Does it matter that they would probably be on a 10 game losing streak and not make the playoffs? No! Who cares about all THAT? I mean who the hell wants to see Kobe shoot when we can get Smush acting out his superstar fantasies? kobe deprives us of watching Kwame fumble arond the ball and show us how hard a layup is even if you are 7 feet tall. Now thats entertainment! 58 points in 3 nights? Hell Nash could do that for a season if he stopped passing. LeBron will average that for his CAREER!!!
Mar.23 at 12:04 pm
jbn74sb says:
Irvbx - The Mavs made the finals last year, which presumably qualifies them as a good team. Perhaps you forgot that not only did Kobe drop 62 on them, but that he did it in 3 quarters, during which time the entire Mavs team had a grand total of 61.

I wish Kobe could still jump as high as he used to. He’s a deadly scorer, but I have to admit, there was an oop from Lamar in the game that would have been a top ten dunk for Kobe, but he could only lay it in.
Mar.23 at 12:15 pm
Matt says:
He did average 37 attempted FG’s in those three games. It’s still a remarkable achievement, but there are at least a dozen players in the L that could score that many points if they shot the ball 37 times in a game. I’m more impressed with Lebron’s 24-17-9 line to be honest.

Shiz, I respect your Kobe love. But the random AI hate is uncalled for. The Nash and Dirk comments were on point, but people used to hate on AI the same way they hate on Kobe when AI was exploding for the Sixers. Not only that, but Kobe was getting mad love back then. Remember, the real hate didn’t begin until he was accused or raping a white woman and driving shaq off.
Mar.23 at 12:32 pm
Shiz says:
allenp: Its not A.I. hate. Its bein real. I cant count how many times I argued with some friends from Philly about how Bubby-chuck was, well…a chuck.. and their answer was always “look who he’s got! Aaron McKie! Eric Snow! Ty Hill!” and all Im sayin is Luke Walton aint that much better than Aaron, likewise with E-Snow/Smush and Ty Hill/Kwame. And Kobe was NOT gettin mad love back then. He was still considered a chuck and even more arrogant because he wouldn’t defer to Shaq when he started crying about “how many jumpshots” the Lakers were taking (all veiled shots at Kobe, I might add). I like A.I. and have no problem with him or his game. In fact I’m a fan. So fall back. And as far as the Colorado thing and the Shaq thing, eh…neither can be proved. So I call that a push..But don’t twist my post around, I love me some Bubba-Chuck, but he does get a pass cuz he’s “from the streets” and “keeps it real” and that cant be denied.

Kobe Bryant is the Good Will Hunting of the LA Lakers. He has to do it by himself because he’s sick of watching the others fumble around and fuck it all up.

Kobe played selfless, teaching, patient ball early in the season, and the team was rolling along pretty well with a fairly cushy first half schedule. Now there’s a bunch of road games, other guys are dinged up, Kwame is on the team…Kobe is taking charge to make sure his team stays solidly in the playoff hunt. Can’t fault him. Kobe just can’t win for winning.

Unlikely, but possible. All he has to do is hit his career average of 24.4 points per game over 70 games for the next 12 seasons to retire a few months shy of his 41st birthday with 39,000-plus in 2019.”

If making his teammates better involves passing the ball to Kwame, then I’d prefer him to make his teammates worse! Everyone applauds Nash for being good at what he does, which is passing. Well, Kobe is the best at what he does, which is scoring. At the end of the day its the team most points that win a game. Why the hell do people want to turn the greatest scorer into a passer? Especially when he has to pass to Kwame!! Namik you’re right, Kwame does show us how hard a layup is every night!

HEY! HEY! I am a kobe hater but I do respect him because he is the most fun player to watch in the league. PLEASE just give him some RESPECT. Many players do not have Kobe’s level or MJ’s level. Who wants to see a player to have the best record breaker? Who likes to watch the greatest player on the planet? so this is our opportunity to watch KOBE today. We never have a chance to watch the greatest players like magic, mj, bird, wilt, and baylor. So Kobe is our chance. Its a blessing for us to have kobe in our time. In fact, He is the GREATEST, most AMAZING player I have ever seen.

But yo, he’s the triangle offense’s designated scorer. Luke and Lamar are the facilitators. For the thick-skulled haters, that means, Luke and Lamar are supposed to pass, and Kobe, Smush and Kwame are supposed to shoot. We all know Kwame can’t catch (something about cake?) and Smush only shows up when the games are nationally televised (that kid has so much potential) so that leaves the onus on Kobe to score.
“doesn’t Kwame remind u of Ewing when he got his powers sucked away in Space Jam?” lmfao If Kobe was writing this post right now, he’d go Dipset on ur asses and begin with, Hi Haters

I’m such a proud Laker Fan. But I’m also a sad one. Lamar has awoken, and what no one notices is that he’s exceeding his averages over this stretch. But the rest of the team … Kwame can’t rebound, the bench can’t score, and the defense … oh damn the defense hurts. If the bench wakes up a bit, and the big guys can dominate the boards (both Lamar and Kwame), I think we can see the return of the Laker team that every was scared of, and maybe even some fake Kobe MVP hype (cuz really, too many people hate him to really want him to win it). The truly sad thing about the Laker play right now is how much Kobe is carrying them … it almost makes you wonder how incredibly bad they would be right now w/o Kobe, and how they got away with only two 6-game loss streaks … that’s right, I said *only*, and I’m a Laker Lover! I would be in so much pain right now if it weren’t for Kobe.

The guy is amazing and not the MVP.

Is this sort of thing keeps up is it possible he could win the MVP? I don’t see him overtaking Dirk or Nash unless both those guys go on a huge slide and lose a bunch of games. He is constantly compared to the greatest players ever and has never won the MVP. It’s strange.

portland, minnesota, new orleans, & memphis what a club! i guess 1hush D would put dallas & suns on the same club, cause bm scored 50 or more on those two teams as well.
I also thought it was funny how you say nobody that has an mvp vote won’t vote for kobe, how do you know? Luckily i know you don’t get to vote.

Yo after his performance in the last three games and the way hes been playin all year there shud be no doubt who the mvp is. The mvp is the person who makes his team win and without kobe where the hell wud the lakers be? He had to score 60 to make his team win by two. Steve nash, dirk nowitzki and all those other guys have depth to support them, kobe goes out there and makes his team win. Hate it or liove it this guy is mvp

Yo tt, I have made the point numerous times that when BM scored 50 on the Suns in the playoffs last year that Phoenix won that game. Remember, the object is to win the game not score the most points individually. But hey, answer me this so I know. When BM scored 50 on the Mavs did the Lakers win? I need to keep track of this. When was that game?

astounding observation Derreck. i believe the words, “doesn’t kwame remind you of patrick ewing in Space Jam after he got his skills sucked away” sums it up the best.

Maybe Phil should stop meowing at Kwame. Perhaps that strategy is overrated.

1hush D. I know you’ve made the point numerous times that when BM scored 50 on the Suns the Lakers lost, but I feel the need to bring it up everytime you say he can’t score on above average teams. Bbal is a team sport, he can’t help it if his supporting cast can’t produce. Don’t say he should pass more too, cause he tried that at the beginning of the year & it didn’t go well. Anyhoo Kobe scored 62 on the Mavs & the lakers won BUT my bad that was in 05′ too long ago. Still impressive though. I don’t see why there should only be a 2 man race to MVP. It doesn’t hurt to include Kobe for MVP, not like he’s gonna get it. Besides everyone’s interpretation of MVP is different. That’s like asking people which taste better Coke, Pepsi, or Dr Pepper?

1hush D says:
fair enough tt. I agree Kobe should be in the discussion. I just think he is well behind Dirk and Nash. That is how my taste test works out. I will put my personal chip on BM when he is not only scoring 50 point + games but when he cannot get his game going he just doesn’t keep jacking up misses and rather trys to plug someone else in who isn’t missing. Odom is showing us that with injury, he can still produce. By the way, you go to war with the army you have not with the one you want. It is no wonder the team stands around and watches him do his thing - why move if it is for not?
