Trading Day 2007

The deadline… Beep… beep… beep… beep (like 24)

By Sam Rubenstein

Here we are. The trade deadline. Names like Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, Pau Gasol, Corey Maggette, Mike Bibby, just to name some of the bigger ones, are being thrown around. Nothing solid yet, but that’s when the blockbusters happen. It’s 1 P.M. as I post this, and Anthony Johnson was just traded back to the Hawks again, for a second rounder.

We’ll see where the day takes us. Is the Kidd era over in Jersey? Is Joumannagate responsible? By the way according to this report, she scratched someone in a fit of jealousy. Is Vince moving on? Are the Grizzlies going to get what value they can for Pau? Will LeBron be teamed with Bibby, who will take the biggest shots whether LeBron wants him to or not?

Stay tuned. I’ll come back here to update and possibly swap out the Anthony Johnson picture for a bigger star if one of them moves. No disrespect, Anthony.

Also, feel free to play along in the comments if you’ve got some hot rumors/predictions. I think the Kidd to Lakers deal is going to happen, but Bynum won’t be a part of it.

UPDATE #1: Reading various things, it seems like people are very adamant that Mike Bibby will be moved. Either to Cleveland or Jersey, though I’m sure there are many more places.

Also it looks like Juan Dixon and Fred Jones are being traded, but I don’t know if its for each other or where, and those two aren’t exactly the blockbuster deals we’re looking for. We’ll see what happens. Are the Heat now players in the trade market? Would they have to give up someone they don’t want to, like Haslem? Vince to the Heat? Stay tuned.
Already ate lunch. I feel like I’m at NORAD during a missle strike, not to compare sports to war or anything.

UPDATE #2: Not really much of an update. Dixon and Jones were traded for each other. Fred Jones goes back to the Oregon area (that area being a state) and Blazers Blog is giddy. The 3 P.M. eastern deadline is coming up, and in the past the trades come flooding in after the deadline passes.

UPDATE #3: Uh…. yeah, that was great. The Anthony Johnson image shall stay on the main page. FRED JONES! JUAN DIXON!

Tommy Patron says:
I found it completely hilarious that Dwayne Wade was crying on the bench and removed from the court in a WHEELCHAIR with a SHOULDER injury. I bet he was the kid that made his mom put a band-aid over every bump he ever got.

Feb.22 at 2:24 pm

Tommy Patron says:
Does anyone think the Heat’ll panic and make a fast move to change the roster?

Feb.22 at 2:26 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Anthony Johnson just got an extra month’s vacation.

Feb.22 at 2:26 pm

Myung says:
You should put the photo of AJ that hawks.com has of him right now. I like how they chose to show him (now in his third tour of duty with the Hawks) in the MookieBlaylock-era jersey. Are they trying to show people we just acquired a really old guy? I DO think this move will make a difference. Believe it or not, a PG (and a VETERAN, to boot) is just what this young squad needs. Too little too late (considering how bad our record is)? Possibly. But…I kind of like the move. I DO think we gave up too much (I wrote my thoughts on 2007 2nd Round Picks in Sam’s earlier post), but it was a decent move. With Wade getting hurt last night, we just might have enough daylight to grab that 8th seed (wishful thinking as always).

Feb.22 at 2:27 pm

Myung says:
That’s cold, Russ. That’s cold. =)

Feb.22 at 2:35 pm

Reggie Evans says:
I read that the Suns offered Kurt Thomas, Raja Bell, and a first round pick (from Atlanta) for Kidd. That sounds better than what the Lakers are offering.

Feb.22 at 2:38 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
I just saw that Kidd rumor too. Trade deadline day is preposterous.

Feb.22 at 2:40 pm

pete chilcutt says:
thomas and bell and 1 pick for jason kidd? could you imagine kidd and nash in the same backcourt? best. fastbreak. ever. too bad giving up a 3 point shooter with toughness in bell would hurt the suns more than triple double kidd and his overrated defense would

albie1kenobi says:
surprised that dallas let him go. i think they’d like to have him around during playoff. but then again, it’s not like they aren’t one of the deepest team in the league already.
and my prediction for the next hour and half is: nothing will happen.

» Trading Spaces: NBA Edition - SLAM ONLINE says:
[…] So, as always, check the Holy Rubenstein for updates first. I’ll be commenting there and leaving some in-depth analysis/pop culture references with each trade. And I’ll try to get on the horn to Mark Cuban (one source is better than none) to see what’s up with AJ. […]

Feb.22 at 2:44 pm

Myung says:
If that rumor is true, Reggie Evans…that could be the best 3-headed PG attack in league history (Kidd, Nash, Barbosa). But I have a feeling that Kidd WON’T be back in Phoenix. I have a feeling he’ll be a Net once 3 PM passes.

Feb.22 at 2:45 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
The Suns tried that 2 PG thing in the past with Kidd/KJ and Kidd/Penny and at times KJ/Elliot Perry. Nash was there with Kidd too, but he was too young. I don’t think they ever won a playoff series with those teams.

Feb.22 at 2:51 pm

Myung says:
Hey, Sam (and any other New York residents), I’m going to NYC for a few days (for the first time in ages), starting Saturday. Any recommendations for me in terms of the best pizza in town? Hot dogs? I’m going to hit up some famous Korean restaurants in the area and my girlfriend’s making me take her to Serendipity, but I want to get some good pizza and hot dogs too. Sorry this comment wasn’t “trade-related.” I just figure you and other New Yorkers would have some good advice.

Feb.22 at 2:54 pm

Ben Collins says:
Nash was a much, MUCH different player then Sam. He had no midrange game and he was far too young to play the game as it came to him. I really like the idea of a Nash/Kidd/Diaw/Marion/Amare lineup . Well, who doesn’t? But I think they’re better than the Mavs with a lineup like that. Yes, I said that out loud. Oh, and I do that if I’m the Nets, too. That pick is just too high and it’s leaps and bounds better than that Laker deal. What if it’s Barbosa instead of Bell? Do you do it then?

Feb.22 at 2:57 pm

jbn74sb says:
My 2 cents: Kidd is not going to LA - the Lakers just don’t have the pieces, and Kidd is not a good fit for that team and that offense.

Feb.22 at 2:58 pm

Reggie Evans says:
I thought that Sarver, the owner of the Suns, was the reason that Kidd went away in the first place, because of the spousal abuse incident in Phoenix. Or was that Colangelo? I can’t remember, but I read it in “7 seconds or Less” by McCallum.

Feb.22 at 2:59 pm

Tyler says:
It’s like this nothing big is gonna happen. I hope and prey J. Kidd comes to the Lakers, it’s not going down. At best it’ll be minor deals.

u guys forgot the fred jones (tornoto) for juan dixon (portland) deal.

The Hawks are ready to DOMINATE now. AJ 4 Life.

Russ Bengtson says:
Pizza, go to Joe’s on Bleecker and 6th Ave. Or Ray’s (the only one of the 6,000 of them that matters) on Prince between Mott and Elizabeth. Or Rosario’s on Orchard and Stanton. For dogs, just go to a Papaya King.

Feb.22 at 3:04 pm

Aaron says:
There is no way in hell that Kidd to Phoenix trade happens. That is some BS someone in Jersey made up to make things interesting.

Feb.22 at 3:04 pm

Insider says:
best hour of the year, folks, Kidd, Vince, not moving, Gasol is 50/50 right now, two deals on the table but West still not sold. This is where the Logo will be praised or crucified when the details get out later this week.

Feb.22 at 3:05 pm

Fred Jones is gone to Portland For Juan Dixon

Feb.22 at 3:06 pm

Boing Dynasty says:
How about charlie bell for andre blatche.

Feb.22 at 3:06 pm

albie1kenobi says:
when was the last time that two best PGs in the league play on the same team? if ever? kidd may just average a trip-doub if he goes to the suns. suns will be frightening.

Feb.22 at 3:07 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
So yeah, Fred Jones for Juan Dixon. Pizza=Grimaldi’s. But that’s in Brooklyn and the line gets kind of crazy. It’s right under the brooklyn bridge though.

Feb.22 at 3:07 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I always liked Anthony Johnson, by the way. Thought the Nets were stupid for ever getting rid of him. Beetlejuice with hops (ever notice he always has a decent dunk in almost every game he plays?).

Feb.22 at 3:07 pm

jbn74sb says:
It is actually supposedly the Suns who approached Jersey with the aforementioned deal, primarily to keep Kidd away from the Lakers. Seeing as how Nash can’t guard Quinton Ross, how in the hell would he guard Kidd if he were on the Lakers? That said, I don’t want the Lakers to pick up Kidd. He’s still a great player, but he’s old and is owed a lot of money. It would be a desperate move to win now, when the Lakers really need to be focused on next year and the 2-3 years after that in which Kobe will still (hopefully) be in his prime.

Feb.22 at 3:09 pm

Myung says:
I’ll write all those down, Russ. Thanks. I’m also taking in a Nets-Knicks game on Sunday night (my friend’s company hooked us up with the tickets). That should be an experience. I’ve been to one Celtics game in Boston, but every other NBA game I’ve ever seen has been in Atlanta.

Feb.22 at 3:09 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And if I’m the Nets I get rid of both Kidd and Carter. Although with Wade out the East gets more wide open and even the Nets (provided Jefferson comes back) have a shot. I ain’t gonna lie—if I was a GM I’d probably be inclined to do nothing on deadline day just like everybody else.

Feb.22 at 3:13 pm

John says:
Lakers are on a 6 game losing streak and fans in LA aren’t necessarily patient so Kidd moving to the city of angels seems very possible.

Feb.22 at 3:14 pm

Bryant Reeves says:
If Wade is out for the season every East team should be busting down J.West’s door to get Gasol. Add Gasol to most teams in the East and they’d be a legitimate threat to win the East (if Wade keeps crying).

Feb.22 at 3:21 pm

Jeffp71 says:
Keep us posted. This is why I visit SLAM online. Looking like Detroit, barring injury is a near lock for the East Finals. with Wade out who will they likely play? Chicago?

couple things to get off my mind
1- d.wade will be back before the playoffs
2- j kidd will make a any team he goes to a playoff contender
3- if vince gets traded he’s gonna have a new highlight reel.

Feb.22 at 3:36 pm

Myung says:
From my experience, some tubes of mystery meat taste better than other tubes of mystery meat. Plus, there’s the whole aura that comes along with it. Maybe I’ve just seen too many movies, but I’d really like to eat a good New York tube of mystery meat.

Myung, “I’d really like to eat a good New York tube of mystery meat.” Maybe dont ever say that out loud…

Feb.22 at 3:48 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
Since nothing’s happening right now, hot dogs are as good a topic as any. I guess they’re pretty much the same unless they add spices and it depends how much stuff you want to load up with. I only eat hot dogs at baseball games, and that’s mostly for the sense of nostalgia/national pastime and all of that.
Yahoo says Bibby isn’t going to Cleveland.

Feb.22 at 3:53 pm

Ben Collins says:
I’m not a big hot dog guy. I ALWAYS avoid them at pregame meals and go for whatever mystery meal is there. Any cooked food you can sell for 25 cents is never a safe bet. Rather have Peter Pan Peanut Butter.

Feb.22 at 4:00 pm

Reggie Evans says:
sigh. no blockbuster trades.

Feb.22 at 4:00 pm

Bryant Reeves says:
If Thorn doesn’t resign Vince, doesn’t he HAVE to trade Kidd? How could a team with just Kidd and RJ ever compete, even in the Leastern conference.

Feb.22 at 4:05 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
i don’t want to know what’s in those stadium dogs. I can imagine though.
SI.com says Mike James could be heading back to Houston for Bobby Sura (who is retiring) and a pick, maybe 1st round. If so, nice work McHale. Nnnnnoooooooootttttttttttttttttt

Feb.22 at 4:06 pm

The Nets should secretly trade Jason Collins for Jarron Collins just to see if anyone notices.

Scoop has wierd interview with Tim Hardaway on the Follower’s website. Scoop wanted to be objective, while trying to give Timmy an out, and the whole thing just felt strange to read. But, go see for yourselves.

Feb.22 at 5:04 pm

Dizzle says:
Today was a HUGE letdown. But to honest, I wasn’t surprised. The Kidd trade couldn’t of happened. If Thorn took what the Lakers gave him without Bynum or Odom, he would of been fired. The Kidd/Phoenix rumor is exactly what it is, a rumor. Jerry West is too smart to trade Gasol for nothing less than two of Gordon/Deng/Hinrich. Unless he totally wanted to screw over the Grizzlies (if he decides to call it quits soon). And why does everybody think Vince is going to opt out after this year? He might, but if he opts out then what team will give him what he wants? $16+ mill a year for 3+ years? He might as well stick with the Nets because they are the team most likely to pay him the most. Some teams might be crazy enough to give him the cash (Bobcats, Orlando, etc.) But who would pay someone close to LBJ/Melo/Wade money for being only half as good and already at the peak of his career. Also, following Russ’ last comment. What about Horace/Harvey Grant? You ever think that Horace got tired of ball, and just gave the reins to Harvey so he could play a bit and finish out Horace’s contract?

Feb.22 at 5:07 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
the Tim hardaway interview is kind of like seeing old anna nicole interviews. Hard to read and you want to look away but you can’t.

What’s worse, Wade crying due to an injury or the raping fag in LA crying 4 years ago when his team didn’t make it back to the Finals for the 4th straight year?

8 something.

Feb.22 at 5:33 pm

slamonline says:
Losers like white hot eboy don’t deserve to post up in this place. You guys need to check what’s being posted. Crying isn’t a bad think you dumbass, if your shoulder was severely dislocated (like Wade’s), you’d probably be bawling your ass out. Not only that, but Wade is in better condition and physical shape then you are, so I wouldn’t be acting hardcore on a message board if I were you. As for “raping fag”, go suck on something you loser.

Feb.22 at 5:33 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that Dwyane Wade has a higher pain threshold than 99 percent of the people on this messageboard or whatever you want to call it.

Feb.22 at 5:36 pm

slamonline says:
Make it 100% Russ.

Feb.22 at 5:44 pm

Dizzle says:
I agree with Russ. Think about all the times Wade falls down. Some of them have to hurt pretty bad. And I’m sure he’s taking a hit or two from Shaq. Keep in mind. If Shaq wanted to kill us with his bare hands, I’m sure he could.
