The D.A.Y. of Tyronn Lue on Super Bowl Sunday

Lue has been clutch this year. The Nets do not like facing clutch players.

By Sam Rubenstein

I started writing this a half hour before my friends come over to watch the Super Bowl and I end up getting too drunk and full of pizzas, chips, various frozen high sodium snacks from my freezer, and even a vegetable or two. Great weekend. I spent literally 12 straight hours on Saturday cleaning and it kept going on Sunday. When I wasn’t cleaning I was shopping for party supplies. My only break was the game itself.
ATLANTA 101 NEW JERSEY 99 OT
I was on one of my shopping missions for the big game when the fourth quarter was coming to a close. The Hawks were allowing Josh Smith to take their big shots, which were threes. Joe Johnson only had 34 at this point in the game and that allowed the Nets to come back and force OT. Joe finished with 37 and 8, but he’s not an All-Star. Meanwhile Nets All-Star Vince Carter had 27, 8, and 7 and hit another huge three just like he did in Utah, but this one still left 2.9 seconds for Lue. Tyronn Lue crossed up Antoine Wright and nailed the game winner from 23 feet. The Hawks celebrated like they won the Super Bowl. Since Tyronn has returned from his latest injury, Atlanta has won 5 of 7. The 8 game losing streak earlier this year just so happened to start with the first game he missed with injury. This is what you would call a trend.

TORONTO 122 LA CLIPPERS 110
Sam Mitchell won coach of the month in the Eastern Conference in January and now his young team is getting better and putting distance between themsleves and the rest of the Atlantic. I thought our army of Toronto readers were calling for his head all season. No? Chris Bosh led the balanced attack with 27 and 7 and Jose Calderon continued his great PG play of late with 12 assists. Elton Brand had 21 and 10 in the loss and Cat Mobley scored 24, hitting 5 of 8 threes. The Raptors offense was clicking to such a degree that nothing the Clippers did would matter. Toronto scored 66 points and shot 70% in the first half. Atlantic Division, somebody is ready to claim you.
DETROIT 90 CLEVELAND 78
The Chris Webber experiment has been working out nicely for the Pistons so far. Sure, the defense of Ben Wallace was their identity in the past, but they don’t even need that kind of presence against the Cavs, a team with no identity of their own. Chauncey led the Pistons with 18 and 10. LeBron, well I’m getting tired of taking about LeBron the half-speed basketball player. Here’s the big LeBron moment of the day: He painted the hummer that his mother bought him and loaded it with all of the newest toys. He claims that he does not have an endorsment deal with Hummer, but in his own words “I sold a lot of trucks for them. They should give me one for free.” The rich get richer. If the first round match-up is Cleveland-Toronto, how great would it be if Toronto won?

i wonder if lebron will be able to turn it on in the playoffs. and even if he is, that doesn’t mean the rest of his teammates can.

and manning is 6′5, 230? thats basically Corey Maggette. vindication with rings, and a superbowl without tom brady. good weekend.

Oh yeah, congrats to Peyton and the Colts. I guess Edgerrin James was the choker that couldn’t win the big game all along. The Colts traded Marshall Faulk to make room for him and the Rams won right away. Now the Colts dump the Edge and they win.
The best news from the game is that now there will be more pressure than ever on Arod.

Maybe Mitchell just didn’t have the right pieces before like everyone says. Any way you look at it he’s making it hard for Colangelo not to resign him at the end of the season which was almost a sure thing when it began.

The Suns are the Colts. Great offense and just enough defense this year to win the big game. Sorry just wanted to get that out there.

Who should go first in the draft Oden or Durant?

Feb.5 at 1:08 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
Durant is really making a strong case.

scott says:
If my team has the number one pick they damn well better pick Durant.

Bimbo Coles says:
the raptors are too deep for anyone in the east right now. and although they’ll lack some serious playoff experience they can push any team to the limit.

Mike says:
How the nets continue to lose like this is beyond me. Somebody should find out if there has ever been a team to lose this many games on a final shot in one season.

Feb.5 at 1:25 pm

scott says:
Random thought number two. Dirk Nowitzki is better then Kevin Garnett. True or false?

Feb.5 at 1:54 pm

Chris says:
The Raps are playing well and when their shots are falling they are a tough team to beat, saying they’re too deep for anyone in the east is a little bit of a stretch. They haven’t beat the Bulls in a couple of years, and the heat and the cavs have superstars with the ability to take it to the next level, and detroit has size and experience, but other than that I think the raps can hang with just about everybody else.

albie1kenobi says:
well, the titanic division is for raps to lose (who would had said that before the season?), nets are finding new and inspiring ways to lose, and the rest decides to play like NBDL teams. they need to have those team demotions to minor league like European football leagues, and not reward them with high draft picks. but as we all know this will never happen.
now that raps are actually doing okay, can we start a new chant to fire mike brown? actually just hire a better coach and keep him as an assistant. he’s not terrible, just not adequate to elevate bron’s and cavs’ games.
and scott, i still maintain that KG is better than Dirk, though if the game is on the line and the team needs a bucket, i’d rather have dirk.

“Since Tyronn has returned from his latest injury, Atlanta has won 5 of 7. The 8 game losing streak earlier this year just so happened to start with the first game he missed with injury. This is what you would call a trend.” I’d expect Lang to write something like that, but coming from you, Sam, it’s even more meaningful. Good words, man. Lue’s one of those players whose impact you’ll never understand unless you watch the Hawks play on a nightly basis (and how many people do that?). The thing that Lue brings, more than clutch shooting…is leadership. Remember, the average age of the Hawks is 23.5 years old. When I go to Hawks games and look at the their program, I’m shocked (and depressed) that I’m older than every member of their team than Tyronn Lue and Lorenzen Wright. He’s a veteran on a very (VERY) young team, and that’s where his worth is multiplied. Not many people would recognize Tyronn Lue’s importance to ANY basketball team, but the fact that you did…thanks, Sam. I appreciate it. BTW, I’m fully behind an improbable playoff run now. I’m pretty certain we’ll be giving our “Top 3 protected” pick to Phoenix in June so now I’m just hoping it’s closer to pick 15 than 4 or 5.

Raps are 4 games out of first in the Leastern Conf. TJ Ford is saying they are shooting for first. I believe him.

Dblizzy! says:
Not that it matters now, But Lue travelled on that little crossover move to free himself for the shot. Look closely, he lifts both feet before dribbling. I would say in terms of all around basketball skills, KG is better than Dirk. But Dirk is definitely a better offensively. I would have to take Durant. Offensiively Durant is ready right now. I think gambling your pick hoping that Oden becomes Bill Russell is dumb. I’m not that impressed with him and he looks like LeBron aged ten years.

Feb.5 at 4:15 pm

albie1kenobi says:
with the league going quicker than ever before, i think durant’s versatility and mobility is more valuable. but if you are in the east, picking oden may just guarantee your east dominance for a decade.
and hey, good to see you commenting Myung. it’s good to see veteran presence.

not that i want to be a wet blanket, but have u seen the raps schedule for the next month?????
Feb 7 vs ORL, 9 vs LAL, 10 @DET, 13 @CHI, 14 vs NJN, 21 vs CLE, 23 vs IND, 24@ CHA, 26 @SAS and 28 @HOU. it’s hard to predict how well they’ll ultimately do this year, but we’ll sure have a better idea by march 1st

Feb.5 at 6:11 pm

Ty says:
The Raptors are the feel good story of the season so far and they are playing damn good ball. I hate to play devil’s advocate here but Miami and New Jersey are gonna get into playoffs with a late season push while the Raptors still remain one or two years away. They need to stop all of this winning and go get Durant or something.

Feb.5 at 7:58 pm

JB21 says:
Ty, the Raptors will make the playoffs. And I think they’ve alreayd won too many games to get Durant. ANd to follow up on this “i still maintain that KG is better than Dirk, though if the game is on the line and the team needs a bucket, i’d rather have dirk. ” EVERY night in the NBA the game is on the line and you need a big bucket. That is why KG’s team isn’t that good and Dirks’ is.

Russ Bengtson says:
I can’t believe I’m going to type this, but the Cavs need to hire Larry Brown.

Feb.5 at 11:31 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
Mike, add one more to that Nets number. They lose nothing but heartbreakers.
Russ, I kind of agree. They need a big name that can get them motivated. Mike Brown is a nice X’s and O’s guy (or career assistant) but play calling and strategy might be too advanced for them right now.
