Let’s Get It Started.

Just some thoughts before the game starts.

By Russ Bengtson

Only a half-hour pregame show tonight—smart, since guys were probably in the casinos until right before it started anyway (how much did you lose, Chuck?). There’s still an hour until that kicks off, and I wanted to get some questions/observations out of the way first:

• Why is the All-Star Game on cable? LAME. I know that most people in the United States do have basic cable, but there are still a vast number of folks that don’t. Don’t get me wrong, I think the TNT crew is by far the best in the game, but it just doesn’t seem fair that the All-Star Game is on pay TV. Greedy bastards. I can’t wait until the 2015 All-Star Game is on Pay-Per-View.

• There’s so much concern about the two best point guards—Steve Nash and Jason Kidd (and Allen Iverson)—missing the game, and how it’ll affect the tempo and the creativity and the overall entertainment factor of the game. I don’t buy it. You can count on guys like LeBron James and Kobe Bryant to become playmakers, and at least one fuill-court dribbling exhibition from Shaq.

• MVP. Tough call. Usually the home-court guy is a favorite, but in Vegas there isn’t one (unless you count Shawn Marion). LeBron and Kobe have already won, and I don’t think Shaq’ll play enough to qualify. It’s just a hunch, but I’m thinking Dwyane Wade gets his second trophy of the weekend.

• East or West? While the West is considered by damn near everyone to be the better conference, I don’t know how much of a difference it makes in the Three-Fifths Season Classic. Especially when so much will be riding on which team is suffering less from hangovers, STDs and gambling losses. I’m going with the West, and a final combined score of 300-plus (hopefully 320-plus).

• I don’t know if there has been or not (since I’m not there) but it would be a damn shame if the weekend concluded without any sort of tribute to the 1990 NCAA Champion UNLV team that destroyed Duke, 103-73 (the largest margin of victory in a title game ever, and the only time a champion scored 100-plus). It would be a damn shame if the only love they got came courtesy of an (admittedly ill) UNDRCRWN shirt. Shark attack!

MVP - Melo, he’ll be out to prove a point to all the coaches that didn’t select him as a reserve.

This day has been very long. Been waiting for the game. I hope it’s not as dissappointing as last night was. Maybe if they play some defence it will be good. Oh, and Chris Bosh is playing, so that’s a positive atleast.

Apropos of nothing much, Gilbert has some fantastic stuff in his All-Star blog. His blog entries have usually been rather underwhelming, but now he brings the goods, including snippets such as these: “There’s a lot of women here. I’m going to try to throw that fishing pole out there and see what I can get. As long as I don’t get a tire…or a boot.” —— (On Shaq not paying a gambling debt)”I’m kind of sad he won’t pay up. I’m taking him to People’s Court.” ——- “We also had a break dance contest and Shaq did Shaq. He was good. He’s going to be in the next Stomp movie, Stomp the Yard Part 2 starring Shaquille O’Neal.” ——- (His “scouting report” on Damon Jones) “Great conversation shooter. I heard he’s going to wear a hot pink jacket. I mean, that’s a nice color to come in second, third, fourth or fifth in.” Very nice.

Are you allowed to ‘first’ your own article? That undercrwn shirt is $40? nutty.

Figured I’d get the inevitable out of the way. And Gilbert is awesome. He’s making all alleged NBA journalists obsolete.

Did you guys see that footage of Shaq “breaking”? I saw him break-off against D Howard. It was pretty funny. Most of Shaq’s moves involved shaking his gigantic rear end. Made me think there should be an annual Break Battle. I’m sure someone would be willing to sponsor it…

Russ, I didn’t bring that undercrn shirt because I was afraid everyone out here would be wearing it. Instead, I’ve only seen it once and I wish I had worn it. Instead I’m going with the True Run TMC shirt.
Speaking of ill t-shirts, my favorite of the weekend is one I saw a woman wearing at Jam Session with all the Sesame Street characters and the line “Representin’ the Streets.” That shit really made me chuckle.

I really hate that the all-star game is on cable and that it’s not in the afternoon.
I really enjoyed the lazy Sunday afternoons watching NBA games.
Used to be, before ABC got the contract, as soon as the Superbowl was done, Sunday afternoons = NBA games at least one, quite often 2.. now it’s a crap shoot and the All-Star game is on Sunday night!
complete garbage.
give the NBA back to NBC or CBS PLEASE!
