Carmelo Anthony. Still not All-Star Material.
31 ppg just isn’t what it used to be
Look at me working at night. So, the All-Star reserves were announced, and congrats are due for first time All-Stars Dwight Howard, Caron Butler, and Carlos Boozer. The Western Conference is especially loaded this year and Tony Parker is having a good enough season, but… Carmelo Anthony is yet to be selected for an NBA All-Star Game. The league’s leading scorer at 31.3, Carmelo is the only player in the NBA above the 30 ppg. Whether you have lost all respect for him after the punch and run or you have some other reason not to like him, you have to admit that Carmelo should be an All-Star. Other than Parker, it’s hard to decide who you would take off that list. Maybe either Amare or Marion, though they both deserve it. Tough luck for Melo.
With Yao and Boozer injured, he’ll most likely get on there the backdoor way. Of all people, David Stern gets to make the call. The same man that hit him with the fifteen gamer. I hope Josh Howard gets the other replacment spot.

No Bulls and no Michael Redd—but two Nets, repping an under-.500 team. Yeah, and who needs the League’s leading scorer? Let’s invite his teammate instead, who’s been in the Western Conference for approximately 13 minutes. The NBA sucks.

As A Nuggets Fan I Feel Completely Disrespected By The West Coaches. You’re Telling Me That Allen Iverson Being Allen Iverson Is More Important Than Anything Melo Has Done For Our Franchise The Past Four Years. Iverson Is Our First All-Star Since McDyess, Not Melo? You’re Snubbing Melo For A Third Time? A Third F*cking Time. Three Times You’ve Not Chosen The Same Deserving Player. But Iverson Is Iverson, Bow Down To Him. Tony Parker More Deserving Than Melo? Three Suns Before Melo? People Will Drop This ‘Cause Melo’s Going Anyways, But It’s Still A Huge Insult To Any Nugget Fan.

Josh Howard is good, but he’s not all star material yet. And if you didn’t see Melo not making it, you haven’t been watchin the NBA. The new NBA motto is “Image is everything” and brawl-instigating sucker punchers will not be rewarded, even if they are averaging 31 ppg. And I doubt Stern will make him an injury replacement, but if he does, Melo should tell Sternbot to kiss his ass! But that wouldn’t really help I suppose.

BULLSHIT. Melo needs to be there. Someone needs to step up and say, “I’ll give up my spot for him.” Iverson, perhaps? Of course, it won’t happen. But it should. AI is AI, but it would go a long way to that “chemistry” thing, even if Melo doesn’t accept.

I hope that Melo gets an invite from Stern then tells him to shove it…the man should make the game from all he’s done this season, not charity because someone’s injured. The man was a legit MVP candidate before the suspension and who knows, if that hadn’t happened chances are AI wouldn’t have gone to Denver and Melo could have won it! I HATE YOU NATE ROBINSON!

Casey says:
Maybe I’m the only one, but where the fuh is Joe Johnson on the all star squad? He’s averaging 25 4 and 4 while shooting 48 percent from the field! Also, how the hell is Steve Nash not starting?! You’d think after two MVPs he wouldn’t have to worry about name recognition. 99% of what all star voting is all about.

Mehmet says:
Someone should give up his spot for him? That’s BS. Look, Melo’s suspension is the main reason that the Nuggets are struggling right now. They’re barely holding on the 7th spot, they lost 4 straight. He f—-d up the first half of the season for his team, I don’t care if he scores 50 ppg. I don’t care if a guy doesn’t get rewarded for that. There are already many All-Star worthy guys in the West.

Josh Howard deserves sh*t all. There must be some award for most overrated player ever by you guys at SLAM. I guess he’d be runner up to Bassy Telfair, but still, there’s only one Howard deserving of the allstart gam. West extras: ‘Melo and Elton Brand, don’t hate on him either. Joe Johnson is more deserving of an All-Star spot than Carter, O’Neal and Butler, but i can let that slide for the moment

I think the NBA has taken over the “No Fun League” from the NFL, considering someone(merriman) who was suspended for cheating/steroids can still be named to the probowl and almost get defensive POY where as someone(melo) doesn’t get rewarded for his play by the coaches…I don’t really have a problem with him being left off considering he has 0 double doubles and gets a lot of his points from leaking out and the time he missed…

When Melo punched someone, ran off like a bitch and got a 15 game suspension he gave the coaches an excuse not to pick him. He cost his team a fifth of their season with out its best player. I think no suspension, he makes it no doubt, but in a loaded western conference his actions made it easy for the coaches to justify not picking him. Its not liek he was injured. This is purely his own fault. The all star game sucks anyway. Billups AND rip? bullshite

Aside from the Obvious Carmelo Carnage… Eastwise there have obviously been some omissions as well. Whats the current injury situations on the east… Rip Hamilton over Joe Johnson?
Neither Ben Gordon, nor Luol Deng? Luol has been having a silly season.

But to be honest if you have coaches like Isiah Thomas just choosing players because they are from their old team, rather than on merit we shouldn’t really be suprised…

Boyd says:
Why in f*cks-name is Tony parker on the all-star team?! 19 and 5, SO WHAT?! Melo is a bit of a dick, i’ll concede that, but he probably deserves to be on the squad more than Iverson, let alone Tony haw-he-haw Parker. As far as Josh Howard goes, he just aint good enough, sorry. I know his team has a great record and all, but in ‘96, the Bulls had a record of 42-5 at the break, and only sent MJ and Pippen; Rodman Kukoc et al didn’t deserve a look in just because they were the next best players on the team with the best record. By the sane logic, how in the HELL did Detroit get 4 in there last year? Who cares, just play Nash, Iverson, Kobe, Marion and Stoudemire as a much improved version of the near unstoppable Suns, forget the stiffs on the bench, give J-Kidd a running squad on the other side and that 161-157 OT game becomes a 181-175 all-star game. Happy days.

Melo gets in as an injury replacement no doubt… Well the Eddy Curry for All Star campaign didnt really seem to work… As for Parker the only reason he got in was so Eva Longoria would be waving from the stands… Whats up with people criticising AI making the team and yet Shaq gets a free pass? It was sad seeing him get stuffed by the rim on that dunk attempt tonight…

I wonder where the limit is here, the threshhold. 31.2 points and 5.7 boards a game isn’t good enough, apparently. What if it was 35 and 10? 40 and 10? Would that make him worthy? What more does he have to do? A triple double with 50 points, 20 boards, 20 assists? If that doesn’t cut it add 10 blocks a game to that. Where’s the threshold Stern? I would accept this if the coaches and commish called a press conference and stated that achievement isn’t a criteria for choosing players for the ASG. Then the world would make sense to me.

parker could be left off for melo. he’s playing nice, and their team’s 3rd in the league, but still, it’s possible. but 3 suns and only 1 mav? your numbers are so inflated when you play in phx that 1 of em could easily be left off to make room for melo. luckily, melo will still get in, but not the way he shoulda.

btw, they said on tnt, ZERO double-doubles? melo’s 6′8, well built, great ups, and he can’t get a double double? very odd, but he still shoulda been all-star. and i hold against him not the punch itself but the fact that he ran like a bitch afterwards. you’re not gonna vote someone like that in to start.

Melo will make the All Star team. Unless someone in the East suffers a serious injury, Joe Johnson won’t. Sigh. Eastern Coaches, don’t give me that “the record matters” BS. If that were the case, Chris Bosh wouldn’t have made the team last season. Be consistent. Idiots.
Feb.2 at 1:37 pm
Chris says:
30+ ppg speaks for itself, but did any other all star reserve miss more games than melo? I think part the definition of being an all-star is playing in most of your teams games (unless you’re shaq this year, or yao ming, or grant hill a couple of years ago, but fans voted those guys in) Also JJ is definately an all-star talent, but I think the coaches reward winning, which explains why Billups and Rip are all-stars this year, and damn near the whole pistons team were all-stars last year.
Feb.2 at 1:54 pm
Myung says:
Good points, Chris…but like I wrote above, Chris Bosh was on the All Star team last year. I’ve been watching All Star games since the late 80’s…and there have been plenty of guys who’ve made it on stats alone (though I agree that for the most part, they DO tend to lean towards guys from teams with winning records). I mean, it’s nothing to get worked up over since there are snubs every year. I just get a little bit more upset about reserves than starters because you can’t really blame the fans for voting for Shaq or Yao or T-Mac… but you’d think the coaches would be a little more discerning (and consistent). Oh well. Life goes on…
Feb.2 at 2:03 pm
next says:
myung, i think we can play the fans somewhat. they have the ability to vote in all-stars who might not deserve it, thus taking away one spot on the roster. also, i’m assuming coaches vote based a lot on what they’ve experienced in playing against teams. the west might not think highly on many east all-star level talents, and you only play em maybe once so far. you’re gonna base your vote on the rep of a guy from before, which still seems unfair.
Feb.2 at 2:06 pm
B.E.P. says:
k melo got snubbed. Picking rip and chauncey over JJ or Redd doesn’t make much sense either. Shaq even being on the all-star roster is ridiculous, let alone starting?…I’m not even going to comment on that anyway. O yah, fuck vince.

He’s like a tiny, classy copy of Iverson and Kidd put together. But you got to get Melo in there…i dont know how, but you got to. Maybe dump Marion. Or if kevin garnett wasnt gonna play SF he could have a chance. life is unfair…

Myung says:
next, like albie said (btw, what’s up albie…i definitely need to get back on this site more than i’ve been doing lately…a quick shout out to all the “regulars” who i used to talk hoops with a few months ago), it’s the conference coaches. the east votes for the east; the west votes for the west. i know i’m biased because i’m a hawks fan, but joe got straight robbed. but whatever. the hawks haven’t earned the right to gripe since they’ve sucked for so long. i’ll vent today, but it’s not worth getting upset over. snubs happen all the time.

I’m not saying Joe Johnson deserves to be on the all star squad over V.C. Vince’s numbers are nice (although I can’t really stomach the dude) but JJ deserves a spot on there somewhere. Also, once again, how is Steve Nash not starting?!
Feb.2 at 4:35 pm
albie1kenobi says:
i haven’t been around much either, Myung. work’s been effing hectic. i didn’t even have time to go online.
anyway, just puzzled on the whole selection. it didn’t seem to have any sort of guideline or consistency (i suppose the coaches are following the league office’s example). i have JJ in my fantasy lineup so i’ve been rooting for him too (not that being picked as all-star would give me any points), but i thought he’s been doing a pretty good job leading the hawks. how did butler make it over JJ though? or what about JO? pistons sending two guys is ridiculous too.
the all-star game itself should be fun because we have two quick-pace offensive coaches, but the players leave a lot of questions on the floor.
Feb.2 at 4:42 pm
Casey says:
It would be hard for me to say take Caron Butler off the squad because I do think that he deserves it, he’s averaging 21 8 and 4 per, while shooting 48% from the field and 88% percent from the free throw line, but yeah, Joe Johnson deserves a spot. Unfortunately, he plays for the Atlanta Hawks and I don’t care how good you are, if you play for the Hawks your team is below .500, and your name isn’t Kobe, T-Mac, V.C., Wade, or Lebron, you’re just not gonna make it. Oh yeah, and how is Steve Nash not starting:)

How the hell did no one mention Ray Allen? Y’all must be stupid. Someone said Baron Davis over Tony Parker? F both of them. Ray deserves to go along with Melo, who should have been there to begin with. This is worse the Arenas’ “snub” last year. Tony Parker is not an All-Star. And by the way, Shaq being in the game pisses me off. He’s only played 7 times this year.
Feb.2 at 7:50 pm
albie1kenobi says:
people need to chill out with the starting lineup. they ARE in fact popularity contest. nash and dirk, both mvp candidates, should be starting, while shaq should be sitting on the sideline in his 3 piece suits (or maybe with a dunk.net beanie, y’all remember that?). fans want to see certain players in the game and playing well is not a criteria for that. remember magic made the all-star game AND won the MVP that year in orlando even though he was retired already? exact same thing.
and last i check, seattle is 2nd to last in the west. ray allen wouldn’t have made the cast even if sonic is an east team. neither would baron.
