My Officially Official Thoughts about the NBA Part 2

I hate the Sixers

By Khalid Salaam

1. I hate the Sixers. I don’t mean hate like I hate the smell of cooked pork or hate women who wear open toe shoes during cold weather. No, I hate the Sixers like I hate faux preachers who sell their congregation dreams about riches and salvation in the after life while they bleed them dry here on earth. The Sixers are in town tonight to play the Knicks and ordinarily I’d have plans to go to MSG and root, root, root for my team. But I’m not going, it’s a silent protest. I refuse to acknowledge the bs they are putting us fans through. I really struggle to understand what the plan is and I’m tired of trying to figure it out. Its not because AI is gone, I was a Sixers fan long before I even heard of him and I will again someday rep with pride. I still rep of course, if someone asks me who my team is then yeah I say the Sixers. But I don’t wait for their highlights on ESPN before I turn the channel nor do I read the standings everyday to make sure we’re not mathematically eliminated yet. I just accept that this is a lost season. I haven’t been this disillusioned since the Clarence Weatherspoon days, since the team rocked those corny ass early 90’S jerseys.

I was annoyed but not shocked when Billy King brought back Larry Brown. But I was surely confused about it. So basically BK brought LB back to be his boss? Brown’s title is VP; King’s title is GM—so yeah he’s his boss. Who does that? Even though LB was the de-facto decision maker why give him official authority and in the process undermine your authority? I’m just waiting for LB to fire King. Unless, maybe that’s what he wants, that way he can escape the situation he created. Either way I become less concerned every second. At least C-Webb and his continent sized contract are gone although the buyout is a little crazy.

2. No offense but all the Raptors fans on this website who post constantly about how their team is on the rise need to relax. No one in America cares. Winning the Atlantic is like winning the war in Iraq. Even if you win, you still lose.

3. So if Steve Nash wins the MVP again and Suns coach Mike D’Antoni doesn’t win again then the whole thing is a set up. I refuse to acknowledge anything otherwise. I like Nash a lot but c’mon.

4. My favorite play of the year so far is Gilbert’s game winning 3 pointer last week. I agree that Arenas does take his share of bad shots but he’s a talented dude and the Eastern Conference really needs him. I’ve stopped hating on the East so much lately. Because the future looks great (Dwight, Bron, Wade, Bosh, etc) and lets just sit back and enjoy what we can. Sure the West will probably produce the winner but there are no guarantees. I’m thinking that the Heat, Cavs or Pistons will make a trade that will change everything.

5. Speaking of winners I’m thinking the Mavs are looking quite title worthy right now. Which brings me to another point. Everyone says the West has better talent and that’s why the teams are so dominant. True, but lets not discount the fact that the have great head coaches as well. Depending on whether you think coaching is overrated maybe you won’t agree with this statement but this is the row call. Avery Johnson, Phil Jax, D’Antoni, Sloan, Pop, Van Gundy. The best coach in the East is on sick leave right now. That has to count for something.

Ryan Jones says:
Khalid, do you hate the Sixers like you hate white people? I mean, more, less or about the same? Help me understand, man…

Jan.10 at 2:42 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
I love White People. Actually i used to be White. I marvel at the amazing thing that modern medicine is.

Jan.10 at 2:51 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
Comparing the war in Iraq to the Atlantic. Bold.

Jan.10 at 3:01 pm

Ryan Jones says:
I feel you, Kha. I used to be white too, before I moved back to PA. Now I’m actually translucent.

Jan.10 at 3:06 pm

J says:
i’m from t. and got slightly caught up in all the hype about the raptors. i found myself thinking they could win last night, then when jersey went up 15-0 early reality set in and i remembered who the raptors really are

Jan.10 at 3:14 pm

M.K. Petrik says:
1) Who is your mid-season MVP candidate? My opinion may be bias since I am Canadian but who is more deserving of the season MVP than Steve Nash? 2). Toronto fans will take anything they can get and if the Raptors are likely to come out the Sh*tlantic Division ain’t nothing wrong with repping our team. I mean we’re talking about the playoffs man, we’re talking about the playoffs! 3) The Sixers are terrible.

Jan.10 at 3:27 pm

Max Airington says:
Khalid you and Ryan should make a bad buddy cop movie. One more couldnt hurt….

Jan.10 at 3:28 pm

Kimg says:
You true man, the sixers have no hope!

Jan.10 at 3:31 pm

True says:
Well, I’ve never been white. I like all people(except liars) And I too hate the Sixers

Jan.10 at 3:32 pm

a.d.i.r.a.b says:
Great post! I couldnt agree wih you more. This black editor is a genius! Genius i tell you

Jan.10 at 3:35 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Steve Nash, an MVP candidate? That’s f*cking crazy. And Max, legally we can’t give you details yet, but let’s just say Lethal Weapon 7: Ballin’ Outta Control! is thisclose to a green light. Mel directing, maybe a cameo from Danny. Yes, we’re psyched.

Jan.10 at 3:41 pm

Max Airington says:
If Nash wins MVP again, wouldnt he and Bird be the only threepeat MVPs of the modern era? Conspiracy?

Jan.10 at 3:41 pm

H to the izzo says:
One could play the stereotypical black guy rockin’ the big fro and pick, the other could be a farmer with overalls,a straw hat and a piece of straw in his mouth who only stops talking to spit tobacco into the nearest bucket…..of course you will have to decide between the two of you who plays which part

Jan.10 at 3:51 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
My MVP candidates are Bron, Kobe,Nash and Dirk. I’m not hating on Nash at all but we’ve been having the same convo for 3 years now. Nash + D’Antoni= MVP. Look at what his plays/coaching did for Tim Thomas last year! To me that was the ultimate proof that D’Antoni is on tp of his game because we’ve barely heard a peep from TT all season. You can’t reward Nash w/o his coach. Yes T.O fans we know you guys are starving but there is a little too much talking on here about how close you guys are to contending. You guys are far!!!

Jan.10 at 4:00 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
Btw, 2 more things. I saw “Children of Men” over the weekend. Interesting movie. Very compelling. The story is a little jerky and they director expects you to figure out the back story on your own but def a hot flick. If you’re into thinking man’s sci fi then i highly recommend it. and of course i couldn’t let a week go by w/o mentioning my Eagles aka america’s team. to all giant and cowboy fans out there i sincerely say that u guys make me so happy when you put on the field dysfunctional team like you did this year. and bears fans be glad we’re not playing you because you might go scoreless. you are the worst #1 seed ever.

Jan.10 at 4:00 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Typecasting is a b*tch.

Jan.10 at 4:01 pm

H to the izzo says:
Fine so Ryan, you can be the farmer

Jan.10 at 4:01 pm

J says:
most of know its a while off. i dont understand why people care about the playoffs so much. its better to get a good draft pick than lose in the first round.
also bosh got shut down by collins. nights like that make me wonder about his all star status

Jan.10 at 5:04 pm

Nick says:
Quote “nights like that make me wonder about his all star status” Are u serious? He had a bad night, every all star has a few bad nights. Now TJ had a bad game!! Last week raptor fans were all over TJ’s dick cause he won them a few close games without Bosh. It’s an 82 game season and Bosh has easily been one of the top big men in the league. it takes more than one bad game for me to stop cheering for Bosh. Il Mago and Bosh will be killing people for the next few years, i suggest you all pay attention.

Jan.10 at 5:07 pm

Ryan Jones says:
WORD.

Jan.10 at 5:20 pm

J says:
i like bosh, not gonna lie but do you think he would make the all star team in the west with all those other forwards? true kid is crazy but did you see how much trouble he had just getting position on the block. he’s nice but sometimes i wonder if he really is an all star yet

Jan.10 at 5:31 pm

NIck says:
It’s not his fault that there are few all stars at his position in the east. Even if he was in the west he’d have a good chance, not great but good.KG, Dirk and TD are all hall of famers. The Nets were playing awesome D and i give them credit for the win. I’m sure Bosh will be dominant tonight and for the rest of the regular season. Now if the raps could get some decent wing players, they’d really be on the rise.

Jan.10 at 5:36 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
Wait IS dirk a hall of famer? If he retired right now does he get in?

Jan.10 at 5:38 pm

NIck says:
NO question!!! Come on now

Jan.10 at 5:39 pm

NIck says:
All he’s done already and last years playoffs. i’d have to include him

Jan.10 at 5:40 pm

NIck says:
Do you think KG is a hall of famer? i do, i just want to know where you stand on this matter

Jan.10 at 5:46 pm

M.K. Petrik says:
As of right now neither KG or Dirk are in the Hall of Fame if both retired.

Jan.10 at 5:55 pm

C-note says:
I’ve never heard of someone question KG’s HOF status. Everyone says he’s a lock, because he deserves it.

Jan.10 at 5:56 pm

Lang Whitaker says:
Dirk is definitely in, because if Drazen Petrovic makes it with his contributions to international basketball as a factor, Dirk qualifies under the same provision. He’d probably make it as strictly an NBA player anyway, but he’d a lock as an international. Grant Hill is also a lock, since they count college and all that stuff. If this was strictly an NBA Hall of Fame, we could argue more on both of them. As for KG, since all he’s done is play NBA really, it’s more debatable, although I think they’ll put him in just for the way he’s changed the power forward position.

Jan.10 at 6:00 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
Dirk is definitely a Hall of Famer. Barring injury he’ll become one of the top 5 power forwards ever. I just had a conversation with our intern Konate about this 5 minutes ago. He said McHale and Worthy were better than him. Konate is 19 years old.

Jan.10 at 6:01 pm

ALX8725 says:
you forgot to mention Don Nelson for your top coaches list in the West!

Jan.10 at 6:08 pm

Lang Whitaker says:
Worthy was better at dunking one-handed than Dirk. Dirk is better at everything else possible in basketball than Worthy.

Jan.10 at 6:17 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
dirk couldn’t defend as well as worthy…..top 5 sam? wow. i’m saying no. …and i didn’t forget nellie. i meant to leave him off

Jan.10 at 6:20 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
grant hill is lucky he has his duke career to fall back on. otherwise he’s borderline

Jan.10 at 6:35 pm

Nick says:
Quote”Lang Whitaker says:
Worthy was better at dunking one-handed than Dirk. Dirk is better at everything else possible in basketball than Worthy.” Exactly! But as a defender i’d say Worthy

Jan.10 at 6:36 pm

Nick says:
How do you guys feel about Payton?

Jan.10 at 6:37 pm

Nick says:
For HOF

Jan.10 at 6:38 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
gp- hof no doubt

Jan.10 at 6:46 pm

Chief says:
Grant was amazing for Detroit and don’t you ever forget it…ever Khalid! Still is, the man is a true role model for everyone out there.

Jan.10 at 10:12 pm

Drolfe says:
If Nash wins the MVP this year im just going to… y’know… do something crazy. When people think back at the last couple of seasons they’ll think of Wade dominating the playoffs, Kobe’s 81, Dirks rise to the top.. and look at the MVP list and see Steve Nash x 2. It aint right.

Jan.10 at 10:16 pm

Drolfe says:
And as far as the Hall goes.. think about how many players right right are ‘future Hall of Famers’. There’s a bunch of them. GP is definatley there. We were talking about this on the message board a while back: Does anyone think Ben Wallace will make it?

Jan.10 at 10:53 pm

Max Airington says:
If Ben Wallace gets in the Hall before Rodman, Ill burn the whole damn thing down….

Jan.10 at 10:57 pm

Drolfe says:
My thoughts exactly.

Jan.11 at 1:47 am

Maclean says:
Not worrying about Bosh’s Allstar status in the west….so would he make it on the All-NBA-Haircut team??? I’d give him a vote And Rodman is in the NBA hair HOF along w/ Scot Pollard! Too badd about Kaman though.

Jan.11 at 2:25 am

Russ Bengtson says:
I don’t think Dirk is a lock Hall of Famer quite yet. KG, no doubt. And no way Dirk has had the international impact that DP did. Not to mention Drazen DIED. That makes a difference. If Dirk just up and walked away from the game right now, from injury or disinterest, I wouldn’t expect to see him in Springfield. Unless he got a guest shot on The Simpsons. Active locks right now? Assuming their careers ended today? GP, Kidd, KG, Kobe, Shaq, AI, Duncan. Probably Yao and Bron anyway, and maybe Deke and Alonzo. Everyone else is still outside looking in as far as I’m concerned. Grant? I don’t know.

Jan.11 at 2:26 am

Russ Bengtson says:
And for the record, I too wondered about Billy bringing in LB. If Mo is the coach and LB is the GM, um, what does BK, you know, do?

Jan.11 at 2:51 am

Gord says:
Nash is great…but he’s not an all-time great. I just don’t see how you can give him 3 MVP’s and put him in the same ranks as the other guys who’ve done it…as well as he’s playing, I just don’t think it’s fair he can be mentioned in the same breath as all-time greats. And saying “oh if Bosh was in the West he wouldn’t necessarily make it” is dumb…he’s not, so who cares.

Jan.11 at 3:35 am

Boing Dynasty says:
Khalid, since you clearly dont pay to much attention to the Raptors maybe you shouldn’t give ignorant pedictions on how far they are or arn’t from contending.
Sorry, that your sixer fan.

Jan.11 at 4:46 am

Poona says:
What does it take for T-Mac to make HOF? I know he’s been constantly injured lately, but sat he and Yao win a title, does he get in automatically?

Jan.11 at 7:23 am

Drolfe says:
Yeah if you win a championship you automatically make the Hall of Fame. Why do you think players want to win them so bad?

Jan.11 at 9:17 am

Ryan Jones says:
So if Dirk is that much better all-around than Worthy, and Worthy was that much better all-around than Nique… I guess, yeah, Dirk has to be in. Great point, Lang.

Jan.11 at 11:41 am

H to the izzo says:
What about Hakeem??

Jan.11 at 12:07 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
grant hill never got pass the 1st rd.

Jan.11 at 12:50 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
hakeem is top 10 all time.

Jan.11 at 1:47 pm

FLUXLAND says:
What’s with the hate for the Raps? Noone in America cares? WTF? Is it cuz we got rid of VC the traitor?!!! (speaking of war). Would you pay more attention if he were here? Or is it cuz the Sixers are complete garbage and have no hope for the next 10 years? Good luck being their fan, champ! I’ll take the Raps over the Sixers anyday. Stop hating playboy. I’m not even sure what point you were trying to make in that paragraph but is stinks of HAAAATTING!!!

Jan.11 at 3:56 pm

Omar says:
So yeah, Dirk a hall of famer now? I think not. Hakeem the dream is a no brainer. Grant Hill - hell to the naw! Injuries did him in dirty like the south. Lethal Weapon: Ballin’ Outta Control will be a straight to DVD classic! And on a side note, did AJ Green ever lose his virginity? That poor kid couldn’t get no buns because he was rockin the Gumby wig piece in ‘99. That was the original 40-Year Old Virgin.

Jan.11 at 3:59 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
I’m not hating the Raps at all. I just wanna see some reality from the fans that all. You guys act like they’re 20 game over .500 or something. relax.

Jan.11 at 9:04 pm

FLUXLAND says:
Ok..if you are not hating, you must be spitting on the Atlantic to make yourself feel better about the Sixers. Cuz if we take a look at rosters in the division we see that NY, Boston and NJ are stacked with players that, on paper, should be shall we say competitive!? We are now left with Philly and TO. Philly looks like an NBDL team and TO has a roster of two stars, a bunch of Europeans and some potential future NBDL stars. After all this, TO is on top of the Atlantic, beaten every team in the division, almost played the most road games in the L but hey, no one cares and we need to relax (after VC gave to us Oz style before leaving). No, you are not hating at all. I hope Andre Miller is a glimmer of hope for you cuz otherwise you need a new team.
——-
Also, “Winning the Atlantic is like winning the war in Iraq. Even if you win, you still lose.”
WOW!!!

Jan.12 at 9:28 am

Ryan Jones says:
Omar: That would be AC Green, and he had a jheri curl. C’mon, playa.

Jan.12 at 2:21 pm

Omar says:
Oh yeeeeeea! Thanks for the correction, Ryan. But i mean, c’mon. Is a jheir curl that much more of a punani magnet than the Gumby wig.

Jan.16 at 12:59 pm

Dirk_Fan!!! says:
Besides his NBA accomplishments, Dirk did so much for his german national team in international competition than no one else in the last 15 years. He was so clutch and won a lot of games all by himself. That should nearly alone be enough to get to the Hall

Jan.18 at 1:29 pm

James says:
At least the Sixers have a chance of grabbing Durant or Oden. Future Bobcats of the league.

Jan.18 at 5:11 pm

J-Bird says:
Nash brings out the best in his teammates each and every night, if thats not the MVP i dont wanna know who is.

Jan.18 at 5:27 pm

MM says:
The big question mark regarding Nash is whether another point could run Pheonix’s offence…e.g. could Kidd? If no…then Nash should be MVP…if Kidd could do it then you have to wonder if it Nash or D’Antoni???

Jan.18 at 5:44 pm

J-Bird says:
The answer is no, Nash has the gift of seeing plays before they develop and creating shot opportunities for guys who cant create their own. Kidd is an excellent assist man, but Nash is the only one who can run an offense as insane as the Suns.

Jan.18 at 6:18 pm

MM says:
Hmmm, if you put Kidd on the Suns, by how much would you expect their points production to drop. And would Kidd make that up in in defence?

Jan.18 at 6:36 pm

Co Co says:
My argument against Nash winning the MVP is and has always been that Dallas hasn’t missed a beat without him. They actually got better. Do the Celtics get better if Bird leaves or the Bulls if Jordan leaves?? Ummm, No!

Jan.18 at 6:54 pm

J-Bird says:
Kidd is less of a scorer than Nash, and with the style of defense the Suns play I dont think Kidds defense even makes much of an impact. Bottom line- Nash is the perfect point guard, and the MVP.

Jan.18 at 6:58 pm

MM says:
Surely the ‘perfect’ point guard would also defend and collect boards???

Jan.18 at 8:24 pm

J-Bird says:
First of all its not the point guards job to collect boards, and once again, the Suns system isnt reliant on Nash’s defense, besides hes actually a pretty good team defender.

Jan.18 at 8:28 pm

J-Bird says:
and didnt the Nets try to play like the Suns for a few games a while back, that didnt work out very well.

Jan.18 at 10:05 pm

MM says:
yeah well I guess we will have to agree to disagree…Kidd for MVP (hahaha)

Jan.19 at 4:48 pm

Booyakasha says:
Khalid, as a DIEHARD celtics fan, i feel your pain guy. Every time i watch them lose and/or lose their current top scorer (That list now includes Pierce AND Wally, their only two legitimate offensive players, and T.A. went out for the season after having a breakout couple of weeks.) Al Jefferson is our centerpiece on the floor right now. I feel like slitting my wrists

Jan.21 at 4:51 am

Harlem World says:
Anyone who thinks JKidd in Phoenix with the current Suns and D’Antoni would not have the same type of success (maybe more with the D, added size, boards etc) is crazy.
D’Antoni is the real.

Jan.21 at 5:00 am

Harlem World says:
Generally speaking, a league MVP silences critics as far as HOF status goes. Supplement that with some rings where you were one of the top 2 players (Kobe, Pip), and you’re good.
Outside of that criteria, you’re going to have to have put up some ridiculous numbers for a number of years to get in. I give KG over Dirk TODAY, on the merit of the MVP. Dirk gets it this year? He’ll be in. He’d probably get in on the European blah blah blah stuff anyway - but I’m more interested in what you did in the L. Another question: Is Nash BETTER than Stock? Another one still: Does Billups get into the HOF? Before you dismiss, what is the difference to what he’s achieved and Joe Dumars?

Jan.21 at 5:48 am

NAS says:
regarding current players yall forgot about NASH, dude won two MVPs in a row and is on track for free, doesnt matter he was a bum prior to that for the most part, you cant win 2 MVPs and NOT get in, even though i honestly hate the dude and if he was playing in the 80s and 90s back when people actually D’d up he’d be nuthin

Jan.21 at 8:25 pm

Dj says:
toronto fans are still bitter over Vince Carter leaving their town. You know its a tortured fan base when their second best player ever was damon stoudemire. out west Toronto would have Memphis’ record, or worse.

Jan.23 at 4:33 pm

See Bee Fore says:
Hey Dj, you ever heard of Tracy Mcgrady? I’d say he’s a bit better than Damon.

Jan.28 at 6:07 pm

Danny W. UK says:
Harlem World: Is Nash better than Stock?
Now that’s a question, immediately as soon as I read it, I almost shouted NO.
But now I’ve thought about it, is he?
Put Nash in the Finals against the Bulls back then, different result? GP in the HOF? How come? He’s great and I’d pay to see him play, but is he really that good? And just in case you’re not thinking that I’m some English freak who know’s nothing about Hoops, I don’t see why KG is a lock at HOF.
KG with Starbury = Not a lot
KG with Cassell and Spree = Not a lot (again)
If you asked T’wolves fans if they’d take a straight swap KG for Dirk I’d think they’d take it. And finally,
T-Mac is a great individual talent but can he contribute as a team player? I can’t be bothered to look up his team stats but has he ever played a season on a team that’s finished over .500?

Jan.28 at 6:25 pm

joe says:
I know how everyone talks about how VC is outta his prime but anyone think theres still hope? - i say if NJ starts rebuilding * cough* sending J.Collins away since hes such a great FT shooter (or maybe just helping him get his degnity & confidence back), get a great wingman & a consistant shooting guard they can turn things around I LOVE THE NETS 2 DEATH!!!!!

Jan.28 at 11:50 pm

Agent Zero 4 M.V.P. says:
T-Mac wasn’t that good in toronto but here are 2 people who were Donyell Marshall and Jalen Rose.
