The Links: Eh…

Checking in from a long weekend…

by Lang Whitaker

So I walk back into the office this afternoon straight off an 8-hour flight, after a long weekend away over in Europe, and immediately Sam starts asking me if I saw the new season of “24″ the last two nights. I did not, I told him, adding that he better not say a word about them to me. And neither should you guys. Anyone mentions 24 in the comments, I’m sending Sam over to your house to talk your ear off about the new episodes. I’ll watch them tonight and catch up on whatever I’ve missed. Otherwise, keep it to yourself.

Spend the weekend in Paris with Wifey and my parents and in-laws. Wifey and I gave the trip to our parents for Christmas, and we spent five days over there, seeing the sights, strolling around. And I went to the PSG/Valenciennes match and saw PSG lose badly enough to get their coach fired the next day. The SLAM curse travels overseas!

And what did I miss here? Besides “24″? Well, only the biggest news in months: Stephon Marbury’s TV show has a home! What do we know about the show?
WHO: Stephon Marbury, Kobe Bryant, Mark Cuban, Isiah Thomas, and more guests to come.
WHAT: “Stars On Stars,” Steph’s talk show where he chats with other celebrities about life, sports and how much cheaper his shoes are than theirs.
WHEN: This is my favorite part of the story. According the NY Post’s “exclusive” story…

“…it’s possible the shows will begin in March, on Fridays at 4:30 p.m.”

First, no mention that Fox owns the New York Post. Second, love that they have an idea of when the show might possibly air, and that idea includes a precise date and time. Now I just have to figure out to get a guest slot on there with me and my dog (and my dawg).

In other TV news, Linkstigator Dean sent along a note that the new season of “Pro’s vs. Joe’s” will feature, among other former NBA stars, Rik Smits. I knew my man Kevin Willis was going to be on there, but Rik Smits adds an entirely new depth of character to the program. I wanted to like last season’s show, but it was all glitzy and shiny and unwatchable.

Tomorrow I’ll go in and do a full-blown Links and catch up on any little things we may have missed. The only major thing that comes to mind is Chris Webber making it official with the Pistons, which makes no sense to me. That and Gilbert and the Wizards turning into AI and the 2003 Sixers. But we’ll figure that out later.

One thought to leave you with: “Winning a championship would complete the whole me.” — Starbury.

JAMS says:
success!

Russ Bengtson says:
There’s no way I’m watching “Stars On Stars,” “Pros Vs. Joes,” OR “24.” Also, finding out Tim Hardaway would be on Pros Vs. Joes was a SERIOUS downer.

Ryan Jones says:
I hear 24 is the bomb.

Ryan Jones says:
And if there’s not an all-Steph special issue soon, you guys have failed at life.

Jan.16 at 5:29 pm

Lang Whitaker says:
Every issue of SLAM is an all-Steph special issue.

Sam Rubenstein says:
I think Roy Jones Jr. is on Pros vs. Joes. That is going to be great. He’s going to kill someone.
The new 24 is bananas.

Triniboy27 says:
Randy Couture is on the new Pros vs Joes. Someone’s going to die for sure.

Jan.16 at 5:51 pm

Matthew says:
Michael Irvin is on there too. I’d die if I watched the show.

rgeezy says:
After Gilbert’s performance it shows one thing about the Jazz…sure there having a great year but if they match up with the Lakers in the first round…i smell an upset. I don’t see any other team in the league get torched by a shooting guard/small forward. Gilbert-51
TMAC-44
Ray Allen-54
Kobe-52
Michael Redd-57 that could be trouble in the playoffs…

Jan.16 at 6:12 pm

jdubbs says:
Well, Gil has torched the West like a forest fire. 55 against the Suns, 60 against the Lakers. And that’s just in the past 2 weeks.

Jan.16 at 6:26 pm

jj says:
Hibachi should be no measuring parameter. He’s been driving teams crazy the whole year. The jazz are gonna be just fine, second round for sure.

Omar says:
I’m not much of a Keifer fan (even tho he did rock the shit on The Lost Boys) but i decided to watch 24 Sunday night and i must admit, that show is the bomb for real. The first 4 hours was off the chain.

Russ Bengtson says:
I don’t watch shows with commercials. Except for CSI reruns.

Jan.16 at 7:14 pm

Tariq says:
First off, I can’t stand 24. The Wire is where it’s at.
Secondly, Lang or Sam…is the SLAM Hall of Fame that was on the old website still around somewhere? I wrote the Olajuwon piece, and it perplexes and vexes me to think that my wise, clever, insightful words might be lost in cyberspace forever.

Jan.16 at 7:16 pm

Tariq says:
(you gotta keep the devil…waaaaaaaay down in the hole)

Jan.16 at 7:36 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I’d be WAY more likely to watch “24″ if Jack Bauer was played by Kobe Bryant.

Jan.16 at 7:37 pm

Elyse says:
If the Lakers end up playing the Jazz in the first round, it is entirely possible that the Lakers have homecourt advantage by having a better record, even if their seeding is one lower… but would we really consider that an upset if that is the case?

Jan.16 at 7:54 pm

Kene says:
24….action-packed adrenaline rush
The Wire…deep, introspective and gritty look at urban reality.
I’ve seen every episode of both, and you really can’t wrong either way. Squash the beef Tariq….hmm, hold up,…Tariq…I think I’m beginning to understand why you can’t stand 24. Jack hasn’t been very nice to folks with names that sound like yours, has he now? Bad Jack,..bad, bad Jack.

Jan.16 at 8:35 pm

Dave Q says:
Its hard to watch any TV after becoming addicted to the Wire. Too bad its gonna take like three years for another season to come out. Word to McNulty!

Jan.16 at 9:37 pm

David says:
Omar?! Where you been? And Lang, how’s ‘Striker’ doing? Is there much of a hip-hop soccer demographic anywhere?

Jan.16 at 10:14 pm

Ferg says:
What’s all the 24 talk, i thought this was a hoops insider site. it used to be, can we have that back or are we just waiting for the Suns vs Mavs WCF?

Jan.16 at 10:45 pm

Chief says:
hip-hop soccer demographic? what a joke…i think soccer is a joke though so…take that!

Jan.17 at 12:06 am

Steve says:
Here’s what happens in 24. Keifer makes the “I’m old, but they’re still paying me to do the same old shit” face. The first season was AMAZING, second was okay, since then, it’s been a parody of itself, or so it seems to me. Maybe it’s like losing your virginity to a pornstar. Nothing can ever live up to the first time…

Jan.17 at 1:32 am

jack Bauer says:
Kobe could never play me….. I save the world …..Kobe cant save the lakers

Jan.17 at 3:24 am

Froggiestyle says:
I gave up on 24, the sub plot with the daughter constantly going to rave parties with international terrorists or hitchhiking with….. you guessed it international terrorists / drug dealers, yada yada yada - just got too old for me. Sorry but that dumb beach shouldda been dead and buried a long time ago. Bring back the wire, and my boy Dexter. Ps. Chief - I know you think you’re funny, but hip hop is wayyy world wide and football - the real, the one - is wayyyy bigger that that kid.

Jan.17 at 12:30 pm

Ryu says:
Damn Lang, leave home your ‘SLAM curse’ next time, please.

Jan.17 at 12:40 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Chief, your ignorance astounds.

Jan.17 at 12:58 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
Steve, seasons 1 and 2 were incredible television. 3 sucked. 4 was okay, but not great. 5 was very good. Season 6 is off to a good start.
David you’re about to get your wish. About Omar that is.

Jan.17 at 12:59 pm

Tariq says:
LOL@ Kene…Well, yeah, that’s part of it I guess. But I saw the entire 1st season of 24 on DVD, and there were some extremely lazy plot devices. I mean, Jack’s wife had temporary amnesia at one point? Seriously? What is this… The Bold and the Beautiful? Might as well have Jack’s evil twin show up.

Jan.17 at 12:59 pm

Chris O'Leary says:
29th!
The first four ep’s of 24 were nuts. I don’t know how I’m gonna get by just watching once a week for the next five months. They need to release that show mini-series style, two ep’s a night till it’s dunzo.

Jan.17 at 12:59 pm

Tariq says:
By the way, to be fair…the acting is pretty good. Especially Keifer and Dennis Haysbert (I think that’s his name…former president I think?)

Jan.17 at 1:00 pm

Chris O'Leary says:
They ran out of good material about 18 episodes in to season one of 24. By the end of it, I didn’t trust the dvd’s i was watching the show on. The Nina Myers heel turn came from nowhere.

Jan.17 at 1:05 pm

Tariq says:
You ain’t lie, Chris.

Jan.17 at 1:07 pm

Tariq says:
Hey, Sam just posted something seven minutes ago. How about it Sam, Can I get an answer? About the Hall of Fame I mean, not 24.)

Jan.17 at 1:12 pm

Tariq says:
I have a 5000-word essay due on Friday, by the way, and typing these comments is my way of avoiding doing any work, so forgive me if my prolific posting is annoying. Anyone want to talk about anything? Anything at all? Marbles? Celebrity Jeopardy? Swiss cheese?

Jan.17 at 1:25 pm

Tariq says:
Oooh. Too many gerunds in that last post.

Jan.17 at 4:39 pm

Dutch Rich says:
Quite frankly I never liked Screamin A. Smith. I’m not sure though if cancelling his show is good news or bad news. We will now be subjected to more of his theatrics during halftime shows on ESPN. And when is MSG gonna fire Clyde Frazier so I can un-mute my tv when watching these Knickerbockers. My barber said they can’t cause he’s the winningest cat in the whole entire Garden. R
