Man it would suck having to do those photos shoots (The players I mean). I used to hear of players turning up to photo shoots all pissed off about having to do them and think: typical whining pro athlete, complaing about everything. But seeing these videos.. man.. it just looks real uninteresting for them. Especially considering all the shit they could be doing. How long do they take? Im guessing several hours, right?

Most SLAM shoots can get done in less than an hour; ideally, interviews are done at a different time, but in the case of big-name players with lots of commitments, a shoot is the sometimes the only time we have with them so we try to get the interview and shoot done at the same time. Not sure if Ryan did his official interview at this shoot or not.
And yes, it may not be the most fun for the players, but it’s a way for them to connect with the fans who will see the photos, give back to SLAM for all the coverage we gave them when they weren’t big stars yet, and a way for them to sell themselves and the products they push. Hard to feel bad for players who willingly accept endorsement deals that take up way more time than magazine photo shoots.

Oh, and for the record: Yes, I did the interview at the photo shoot — whole process combined took 90 minutes, maybe a little less. As I wrote in the mag, Melo seemed kind of grumpy early on, which is fair ’cause apparently he hadn’t slept much, but he was in a great mood for the interview and was pretty cool for the photo shoot, too. The VAST majority of guys we shoot for SLAM are cool and cooperative, mostly because they want to be in the magazine — especially, obviously, if it’s a cover. Melo’s one of those guys who bugs us every time he sees us, like, “When’s my next cover,” and considering how overdue he was for this one, you can imagine how much grief he was giving us. But he was great, as are most of the guys we deal with. And Ekam, you’ll be glad to know that includes my close, dear, personal friend LeBron James.
