All Starz

The Wayans brothers, for TWOOOOOOOOOOOO.

It’s not often (at least not often enough) that basketball flicks get play on the premiere movie channels. The Basketball Diaries gets some love sometimes, as does Love & Basketball, but those are more just movies that happen to have the word “basketball” in the title. Where are the epics? Where’s White Men Can’t Jump? Where’s Hoosiers? Where’s Hoop Dreams? Where’s Blue Chips, for God’s sake?

Then tonight, scrolling through titles, I saw it. They started after 3 a.m., mind you, but they were on the schedule nonetheless. Two basketball movies AT THE SAME TIME, on Starz Kids & Family and Starz in Black. Two EPICS of the genre: The Sixth Man and Celtic Pride, respectively. Featuring various and sundry Wayans brothers. Yeeeeeeeah. Thanks, Starz.

(On a side note, the NBA actually signed off on Celtic Pride, I guess—seeing that they used real teams and uniforms. I’d love to hear David Stern explain that one sometime.)
I REALLY need to get LeaguePass.

By the way, it’s worth watching “Blue Chips” just to see Bob Cousy shoot free throws. And for the incomparable Matt Nover, of course.

I don’t know, Big Country. Space Jam would give WMCJ a run for it’s money.

Woody and Always Bet on Black vs. Jordan and some cartoons? You’ve got to be kidding me. Space Jam’s only saving grace was the Bill Murray cameo.

Max Airington says:
You mean Above the 8ft Rim?

Dec.6 at 3:37 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Yeah, Above The Rim was sketchy. At least I didn’t mention Eddie. (It’s only a matter of time before Whoopi actually DOES get the Knick job, right?) Then there was Sunset Park. Rhea Perlman AND ONYX’s Fredro Starr (and a pre-famous Terrence Howard)? SAY WORD.

The funny thing about Sunset Park which came out around 1996 is that one of the characters in the movie plays the exact same character (a high school basketball player) almost ten years later in Coach Carter. I cannot remember the guy’s name but he is a shorter guy with a bald head in both movies and plays shooting guard if I remember correctly.

He got game is the best ball movie forever, watching Ray shoot, pretending Denzel can shoot(yuck), not to mention Rosario Dawson’s titty’s. CLASSIC

Patrick says:
the soundtrack and epic mood of He Got Game (except those weird prostitute scenes with Milla), flipping clips of solitary hoops junkies practicing amidst picturesque scenery and punctuated by rayray’s clockwork jumpshot, capture the true beauty of this game often overshadowed by showmanship. that pickup run 5on5 is not so much a run as a a filmmaker’s exercise in aesthetics.
thanks, spike.

is anyone else old enough to remember “fast break” with bernard king and gabe kaplan? that gets my vote. (as opposed to, say, the fish that saved pittsburgh with the doctor).

This isnt a movie but needs mentioning; ‘Hang Time’, Anthony Anderson, Reggie Theus and a chick who can ball…. What more can you ask for?

Nadav Mor says:
In Space Jam, in the last play of the game between the monsters and the toons, Jordan makes a lay up, by stretching his arm all the way from back court. He gets 2 points for it. However, it should be a three, cause his feet are behind the line.
