The DAY : New Blood

Training camp. The first chance to watch players with their new teams. Rookies, free agents, traded vets, Robert Swift’s tats. Lots of action.

By Sam Rubenstein

I suppose the most important part of training camp games or pre-season (Why does the NBA call it training camp, the NFL call it pre-season, and MLB call it spring training? Huh? Huh?) is to take a look at players with their new teams and rookies. So, here’s a quick look at how some of the more notable new blood performed last night. If I missed anyone, don’t hesitate to let me know in the comments.

In the Toronto-Boston game, Rajon Rondo scored 29 on 8 of 13 shooting. This coming the night after he scored 14 on Adam Morrison. Bassy scored 16 and hit 3 of 5 threes. He likes the sticky ball. Andrea Bargnani scored 13 points but was 0 for 5 from three point range. TJ Ford had 6 points, 4 steals, and EIGHT turnovers.

In the Nets-Pacers game, Marcus Williams had 7 assists in 30 minutes for the Nets and shot 2 of 10 from the field including 0 for 5 from three. Wow, he really is learning from Ason! I keed I keed. Al Harrington put up 21 shots for his new/old team, resulting in 21 points. Welcome back. Stephen Jackson isn’t new to the Pacers, but he did have the line “DNP - various contusions.” An automobile will do that to you. Okay, Stephen took 5 shots but none in the game. How do you not make that joke?

In the Atlanta-Memphis game Shelden Wiliams put up a 12 and 9 in 24 minutes and Kyle Lowry hit 1 of 7 field goals, but 10 of 14 free throws. Not much going on from the new guys other than that.

Charlie Villanueva had 14 points, 6 boards, and 4 assists for the Bucks against the T-Wolves. Mike James had 9 points and 4 assists in 23 minutes. Randy Foye checked in with 4 points in 17 minutes.

Big Ben had 7 points and 9 boards in 20 minutes, and Tyrus Thomas added 6 points and 3 boards against the Wizard. As for Washington, Donnell Taylor led the team in minutes and almost everything else. Training camp.

The Sonics. Hmmm… Well, the new tats and bushy top on Robert Swift came through with a line of 4 and 3. Substance over style, that’s what he’s about. Brandon Roy had 8 points for Portland on 3 of 10. LaMarcus Aldridge didn’t play. I should mention that Zach Randolph put up 20 and 7 in 35 minutes. Showcasing him for a trade perhaps?

I guess thy should stick Andrea (haaaa, that name cracks me up everytime) into the low blocks, give him some protein shakes and stop the Nowitzki-Italiana experiment. Well, guess coach Mitchell is using training camp / preseason to test stuff.

Just the kind of comentary i would expect from someone who apparently really thinks “Perk” is anything more than a servicable bench jockey.

Oh yeah and Sam you left out the Spanish rook for the Raps, i think he put up 18, with a bunch of it in OT.

Boing, good point. Jorge Garbajosa is going to be VERY good in Toronto if he can take the grind of a long NBA Season. You know i’ve seen him play in person a few times, and apart from the shaggy hair/beard combo, dude can shoot. And he’s one of the few i have seen totaly make Dirk twice about doing any damn thing he wants on the court. Good hard worker on defense, even a bit dirty. a disciple of the Vlade Divac school of theatrics and flopping. Interesting player

Speaking of Barganini, I was wondering why nobody was bashing the Raptors for picking him number one like other teams that drafted unproven Euros in previous drafts.

You know, I can’t believe I’m even suggesting it, but has Jack already out-crazied Ron-Ron in Indy?

Oct.13 at 1:21 pm

MD Shuai says:
Maybe he has; but give Ron-Ron some time in Sacremento, and he’ll make them wish they had never signed him; and probably just to ensure his title as the craziest mo-fo in the league. “Jack shot five shots in the air did he? I’ll give em warning shots; I’m gonna warn him in the face.”

Oct.13 at 1:35 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
It’s not about who is crazier. It’s about enjoying them both. In hindsight, having them on the same team, we should have been expecting something like The Malice to happen.

i like the new comers most of the superstars are cry babies and the nba needs to get more physical and make the players stop cring so much that is probably why they lose overseas they think they are going to get everycall because of who he is and stop calling so many techs they also need the warrior on the dream team mr. ron artest
