SLAM vs. New York Times
Great (and grey) minds think alike…
You know, I’d written a really long thing to run here, explaining my thoughts on this issue, but maybe it’s better if I just let this speak for itself.
SLAM issue 103, which has been on newstands in New York City for two weeks and been online since October 23rd, asked two questions about the forthcoming NBA season…
1) Can Ben Wallace lead the Bulls to a title?
2) Will Amare Stoudemire recover from his injury and return to form for the Suns?

1) Can Ben Wallace help lead the Bulls to a title?
2) Will Amare Stoudemire recover from injury and return to form for the Phoenix Suns?

C’mon, Lang. Slam’s goal is to be a leader and on the cutting edge of NBA analysis. When others affirm that by copying your analysis, why do you get all upset about it? It’s like being really fashionable and others copying your look, or coming out with a new sound and have others copy that.

good point by steve, though i see it like Starbury dropping a super super hot kicks, then a month later nike comes up with a pair of kicks that’s basically the same.
btw, nice snap shot of the paper, Lang. i love this stuff (this is coming from a guy who films NBA 2k6 highlights with his camera).

i don’t think lang is upset. and besides, everyone is asking those questions.

I’m more upset that we called Amare “No. 1 Stunna” and now look what’s going on with the original No. 1 Stunna: http://www.allhiphop.com/hiphopnews/?ID=6331

Plagarism much? Should they cut a check to the authors of the Slam articles now or at the 15th of the month?

Mimickry is the greatest compliment to an artist. So in that sense: cheers Slam team. Won’t be the last time you’ll get copied by the mainstream, matter of fact…. better sweep your offices and meeting rooms for bugs and microcameras hmm?

How about you post that “really long thing” Lang? I’m really interested in what you (really) had to say.

In fairness, we’re gonna start running Maureen Dowd editorials in the Hype section, so I guess this will all even out.

I’m with Mutoni–Slam’s ahead of the curve, but those are probably the two biggest questions in the East and West, respectively.

Alex says:
Well those are real issues in teh NBA guys. Those are probably the two biggest issues in the league. Everyone sees the need to focus on both conferences and the main questions are can Miami be dethroned by Big Ben adn the Bulls and how will Stoudemire help the Suns? If the New York Times started incorporating cheesy rap lyrics and urban slang into its articles then we’d have a problem.

I’m not mad about it. I just thought it was interesting.

This has nothing to do with the subject at hand but I saw that Toney Blare had his final show last week at EVR. Are there going to be any more slam radio shows?

Damn! First it’s ESPN, now it’s the NY Times. Oh well, you know what they say - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Plagarism, on the other hand…..

I dont get it…Do you guys have a monopoly on NBA topics?
It doesnt take an NBA guru, which the NY Times probably isn’t, to know about Amare’s and Ben’s stories…

Ryan Jones says:
I think the point here, which about 74 percent of posters have overreacted to, is that it’s just noteworthy that we did these two guys and these exact angles as the split covers for our preseason issue, and then the times opened their season preview with pretty much the exact same thing. We know Liz Robbins, who wrote both stories, and I’m pretty sure she’s NOT a Slam reader. It’s just note-worthy, is all. You f*ckin people…

Great. Way to end the arguing, Ryan.

Lang I love your magazine and the site, but you gotta get over this. Most of us know that you guys are the best source with great writers and blah blah blah. We don’t need you to tell us. And we don’t care if people copy your stuff. Just keep doing what you do.

I want to read Lang’s really long thoughts on this issue. Any chance of dropping them in the comments?

Its true that those are two of the big questions, but the way the Times presented theirs does look like they took it from slam. Weather they did or not thats just how it looks.
